Re:October 08 Banders Reply to this message
Hello. On Sunday night I got home at around 4.30pm after being at the pool with my friend and her kids. Ten minutes later her hubby called me & said there is a storm coming! It was too late looked out the window couldnt see down the street was all white. I thought I better check on the dog 1/2 hr later. She loves to run around the yard and bark her head off so went down & the room downstairs was absolutely flooded!!! I nearly died and I was home alone. Im lucky my family came over to help us clean up and we did and finally ripped all the carpet out and got everything out. We are lucky compared to alot other people losing thier homes in the Gap. Hi Groovers

Another bad storm last night up here in storm-ravaged Brisbane!

The sky just looks really weird and I reckon we will get another storm tonight. They are predicting another bad one for Saturday too..

No damage to my house at this stage, but I might just check the excess on my home insurance!!!

Hi Marg,
I hope the floods and weather treat you more kindly. I was banded 3 1/2 weeks ago 27/10 and will get my first fill on Monday week. I have lost only 3.5 kg since op but that is OK. I haven't PBed at all and I am eating small meals but normal food. Crumpets are nice. I go away this weekend to a retreat so will be eating other people's cooking so that will be interesting. I'm taking my LO opti just incase I come unstuck, but I still don't feel hungry but can feel quite full at times. I think some fill was put in at time of op. We are all different I guess. Keep up the good work October-feasters, and stick to the doctor you chose and his ways. Patience is a virtue.

Annie

This is what I understand about band sizes. Different companies make different bands - the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band mentioned is a Johnson and Johnson band. Another band many surgeons use is the Inamed and they come in different sizes. Most surgeons usually work with one particular brand of band. With the Inamed brand where there is a choice of sizes the surgeon will determine, once he's in there, which is most suitable. The bands all work the same. Some people with larger bands take longer to get good restriction but that too depends on how much the surgeon puts in and what time you have to wait between fills. And then individuals need different amounts even with the same band. Your surgeon will determine the amount of fill - he may start with a 1ml. Overfill is not a happy place to be and most surgeons tend to err on the side of caution. And going up gradually gives you a chance to get used to the chewing lots, eat slowly routine.

My doctor only sees you every 6 weeks. So i have to wait 6 weeks after surgery for my first fill, then another 6 weeks before the second etc.

It is a bit frustrating as I don't have any restricition yet, but I think he is probably right to let everything settle in between appointments. I always knew this would be a 2 year project.

The difference in fill volumes could be that some are Swedish LapBands (like mine) and some are the older Lapband?

Hi

Some bands are 10ml and some are 14ml (like mine). I haven't actually heard of a 4ml band before.

Point taken , I know I am impatient, and it didn't take two weeks to put all the weight on
Apparently I have a 4 ml band and they put 1.5 in the first fill
Does anyone else have one of these small bands, and how much should I expect to have put in it
Also does anyone know why there are 10ml and 4 ml , that seems a big difference to me
and I doubt very much it is because I have a little stomach!!! cheers Annie

Re:October 08 Banders Reply to this message
Hi Gary

Yes, patience is a virtue and I know some people are very sensitive to fills. HOWEVER, when people are in danger of putting all the weight back on again because they are so hungry don't you think a doctor's prudence is ridiculous. They make you drink a glass of water after a fill to make sure you can swallow and all that. Also a lot of people find that a fill can have reduced effect over a couple of weeks anyway.

Anyway that's my 2 cents worth. I am very happy with my fill and level of restriction and I dont like to hear about all the people really struggling not to binge on here because they have grossly inadequate restriction.

Date of band - 8/10/08
Weight lost so far 18kg
Fill level - 9ml in a 14ml band

Re:October 08 Banders Reply to this message
A little too much anger and angst around I think.. There is good reason not to fill to much too quickly. Overfilling is worse than underfilling. Also, after each fill, your band/stomach "adjust" to each other and it takes time to settle in. If you fill too much you won't be able to swallow (trust me.. this feels awful! I had it straight after surgery and after my first fill) Then you have to go back immediately and have it emptied again. The whole approach is to fill/wait/settle/test/fil l again.. This has always been the case and is in all the literature. It's only a few weeks in a lifetime decision and when it is right, whether this takes two fills or ten, it will be "right".

As always.. I am preaching patience again.. frustrating?? yes... but necessary for a good outcome.

Cheers

Gary

Kaz

My doc will do a fill whenever I want, he is very flexible! In fact I had to put off my last scheduled fill because I'm at a good place at the moment.

What's with these doctors down south!!!! They are happy to take your money and give you the band, but then they like to play God and refuse to activate it properly for you so you can lose weight!!

FFS what the... @#!@#*

It really annoys me to read about how many of you have had such pathetic small fills and have no restriction at all!! It's just like you have no band at all, because your @!* doctor wont do the right thing. It's no wonder you are all hungry cos the band is USELESS to you until you get the right fill level!!

Do you know if you can have a fill earlier than two weeks
in between them,
I am finding it hard to keep motivated and I am thinking about it all the time
Whereas the first week after the op, had no desire for food and really didn't think about it
This is driving me nuts

Re:October 08 Banders Reply to this message
I know its a freaking joke! I mean whats the point in not putting a decent amount in and making it a long wait in between, i mean if its to do with how many patients he has, it takes what 5 mins at most to have a feel top it up and out you go!

I think the scales will show this time that i need more, i think its been about a kilo lost since the 6th november but with that i am working hard and doing an average of over an hour excercise a day. Working so hard for nothing :(

I have had a few really nasty ones, and i was told a gassy drink like coke.

It hurts like hell when you have it, and i only had a small sip, but it will help bring it up and out.

Hi Kaz

It's ridiculous that your doc makes you wait a month between fills. I had my two fills a week apart! Am at really good restriction and losing heaps.

Why do some of the docs give such ridiculously small fills, which do not help anyone, and then make you wait for so long to get a second fill, which might be equally unhelpful if they give you another minute amount! FFS!!!!!!!! What #@!**

I think the docs up here in Brisbane are more realistic and don't leave you hanging for months feeling hungry with no proper fill to activate your band properly.

My first fill was 3 weeks post op and 7ml and then a week later it was upped to 9ml - SWEET!

After paying so much for your surgery the least your doctor and can is activate the bloody thing for you Kaz!!! I would be so mad if I was you!!

Re:October 08 Banders Reply to this message
FFS indeed, Kaz!

Have they given you a reason? My surgeon said to come back every 2-3 weeks, if I could, as it's 3+ hours to Melbourne for me. As it's, as he put it, hit and miss until we get it right, there's no need to wait so long.

Perhaps gently up the pressure, but don't say "Oh the people on the discussion board...". that's sure to turn him against anything you say after that!

Hi Groovers

Another frightening storm here in Brisbane last night with heaps of rain, very good for our dam levels but quite violent too.

Well I am chuffed this morning because I have lost another 1.5kg when I weighed this morning. YOO HOO Sassy's getting her mojo back!

I have lost a total of 18.5kg since I began Optifast two weeks before banding. Have 9ml fill in a 14ml band.

Hope everyone is well, particularly the Brisbane banders, hope you survived the storms.

Hmm Gary, seeing as I was turned 4 the year Mr Roth published his most popular piece of fiction, I can't say I'm as in the know about it as you are! Perhaps I should change Portnoy's name to Spielvogel. (Isn't wikwpedia a great tool?)

I do not have to relinquish/renounce/trod upon my American citizenship.

I can report the fill needle was no where near the gargantuan one our dear Jane seems to have encountered. Simple lie back, "oh a bit of a bruise" says GC, "be proud of it, you put it there" says our hero TL with a chuckle, pillow behind the back, lie back and asked to raise my head off the table to tighten abdominals (I have those?!), and POKE - in it goes. 1.5ml just like that and on goes a plastic bandage.

Funny thing is, i didn't look at the site all day. When I changed to get into bed, I took off the bandage and noticed it was about an inch to the south of my port scar. I don't know what he "filled", but there a big lump of something at the port site. Wonder if he missed! :o)
