Just had a huge upset, finally heard back from Apra and they will not except my surgeons letter as it does not say "life threatening illness".
It said this would reduce my life expectancy and the operation could save my life. I called the surgeons rooms to see if could get a new letter and he will not write those words for legal reasons. I'm devastated. Thankgod my parents have offered to pay but I really didn't want to go down that path. My only alternative would be to go to a new surgeon but would mean losing my surgery date and I am not prepared to do that. So frustrating! Would be helpful to know the surgeon is not prepared to write this from the beginning, particularly when you make it clear that you will be applying to APRA to have it done from your first appointment.

I rang apra otday and my application has been approved. At first the letter from my surgeon contained too much info and not the words "life threatening illness" i got the surgeon to write life threatening illness and it was approved. My GPS letter didnt state what the life threatening illness was and that was approved staright away. APRA is very specific about how it needs to be worded. The other option is to say you sufefr chronic pain, if your doctor is reluctant to say life trheatening.

APRA are saying 16 working days but i have twice requested an esclation (first time they looked at my app and said surgeons letter wasnt right) and second time they assessed it within 24 hrs and it was approved. So if you have good reason you can ask for an escalation - i asked for one becaese my surgery is in 8 days!!

hi to all

i have had my application in for a bout 3 weeks, first apra told me 14 working days, then 16 working days then 18 working days. today is the 18th working day and so i rang but still no news. I was told tho that they will definately have a decision or answer to my application by the close of business tuesday. it had better be yes at this late stage or i have no idea what im going to do. i was told they are being tougher and scrutenising the applications as so many people are applying for eary release of funds. he told me last week they had 16,000 applications on record currently.

good luck to every one

Just to let you know, Apra is very behind in applications at the moment and taking approx 1 month to approve applications. Dissapointing.

When you use super to pay for the op, does that mean you are using it to pay for everthing, like hospital, surgeon, lapband etc etc? or do they only give you a certain amount of money?

Hi Mini
I went through APRA and got the money

Both my surgon and GP wrote that i was morbidly obese and was wanting to have lapband as a means of controlling my obesity and reducing the risk of the life threatening illness that i have.

I have no other problems but be obese

No where did it state what the life thretening illness was and they never asked my surgon said that being morbidly obese is life threatening

You also have to state that is not readily available in the public system

I took the APRA application with me and said this is what it needs to say

Good luck hope that helped any thing more let me know

Cheers

Here's a question for all who have been successfull in the APRA stakes...

Does your letter from surgeon/GP have to specify what exactly your life threatening condition is?. Will the just accept that you have one?, do they accept morbid obesity as a life threatening illness?

I want to get this right this time as I am running out of time to get the whole thing done and I am trying to avoid going to the doctor a third time just to get a letter!!!

Thanks!!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I had APRA send a copy of my rejection letter, and their criteria to my surgeon's office, and they said they would look at changing the letter.

I followed up this week, as I hadn't heard what was happening. The surgeon's office said, sorry but we aren't changing our letter due to legal reasons.

I am so frustrated over it. They weren't even going to ring and tell me that they weren't responding.

So I have decided that I'll have to look for a new surgeon this week, which I'm not happy about. I'm probably going to have to go to another hospital further away - it's all very inconvenient!!

missbelinda, I have just received a letter from APRA saying that my letters arent quite right either. I havent gone back to my surgeon and doctor yet. I am quite annoyed as both did say "life threatning", but werent specific enough...

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
There is notyhing you can do other than go to another surgeon and doctor.

I have had the exact same problem but luckily my surgeon was ok with re wording the letter. I had to go to another doctor though.

Try ringing the surgeons office and stating that you have to go elsewhere unless they can write a letter in accordance with APRA's requirements. I would tell them the apra website address and ask them to please read the requirements or ring apra themselves to discuss their letter.

Good luck I still haven't heard back as I only faxed the second gp's letter away yesterday.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi there,

It seems like I am the only one having trouble with getting the letters worded correctly.

I sent in my application in July with one from my surgeon, and one from my GP. I got rejected based on my surgeon's letter because it doesn't say the exact phrase "life threatening illness".

My surgeon's office are saying that they use the same letter for everyone, and no-one else has had problems, and they will not use this phrase, as legally it's not correct.

I then asked my endo for a letter, and she said the same thing.

This is very baffling to me. My BMI is 42, therefore I suffer from obesity. I also have diabetes and PCOS.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? Because APRA said they are being very strict in processing the applications, and even if they have accepted the same letter from my surgeon for others, they are not going to accept it now.

Hi Aterese

I am having my surgery on sept 17. My bmi is 34. I had no problems with my local doctor or with the surgeon. Both were supportive and kind.

I have private insurance and have applied to APRA to get the gap payment out of my super, It will be around $4000.

Both my local doctor and surgeon wrote the letters I need.

You will find a supportive doctor, Im sure..

good luck

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
i used my defacto super and it was fine. as long as you have done tax return together ie legally defacto youll be fine. we had only been legally defacto 2 yrs. He has to apply and do the early release forms but you have get the 2 letters from doctor and surgeon.your partner eneds than write letetr saying that he like hsi super released early for you, because you dont ahve finanacial avaibility or super and add it to application. i did this and was approved by the 6th day.

If a partner is applying through their spouse's super fund...do they need to be married or is long term defacto recognised ?

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Has anyone been severe but not morbid obese (bmi 38). I am considering lapband but afraid the surgeon will say no, or more so the GP won't provide a good letter.

I have complications medically most of my life and getting worse, plus long term depression. Now I'm suffering chronic fatigue and really do not want to wait until I "fit" the criteria perfectly.

I want this, but want to apply through my super since I do have a few amounts aside in separate funds.

What did people do who were not technically "life threatening", but could lead to it. Only advantage is I have a family history I can quote.

How did you convince your doctors to put the right wording to support a super withdrawal application ?

I didn't apply to my super fund until AFTER my surgery (as I didn't realise I could). My surgeon and GP were both happy to provide letters. I applied, and received my cheque that covered ALL costs 10 days later. No problems at all.
