Hi guys,

My update - I applied on 23 September and called them after 14 working days and they said they were running a long way behind. Now 25 working days later, haven't heard anything.

It's a bit scary waiting, as I paid for my op (2 weeks ago) on credit card. :-)

I hope its approved and I hope (because of the frozen fund stuff) that my super company says yes! I have funds in two places so hopefully at least one will. :-(

Hi pearl,

Go to the APRA web site, there's a form for release of funds for compassionate reasons. Read this thread and others entitled APRA, then fill the form in. You need letters from your Surgeon and Doctor...

I put my application in to APRA on the 1st August. On the 9th September I put in new doctors letters cause the first ones werent right...start the timer again...I got approval from APRA last week, then took about a week for the cheque from my super fund.
I was starting to get worried, 3 weeks to go...

At the moment from application to assessment you're looking at 22-25 working days. I have no idea about timeframe from approval to release of money from super.

Hi girls,
Just wondering how long it took from when you applied till you got your money??
I don't see my surgeon until December for the first time and I can't even apply until then :(

Ok so some really good news for me, APRA approved releasng my funds today and i have spoken with my super Hostplus and they are happy to release funds, if APRA say approved the super have no leg to stand on apart from give you your money so just to let you other people know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I wouldn't advise even ringing funds, I'd be emailing and getting it in writing. If you ring you'll probably speak to someone who doesn't know what they are talking about anyway. Always best to get things in writing specially when needing a YES/NO answer so that you have something to fall back on if they say YES and when the crunch comes they say no.

I used to work on the phones for the First Home Ownership Grant, my first day they gave me a sheet to read and one hour later I was put on the phone to answer questions. I didn't realise until a few weeks later when I had become experienced in what untruths I was telling people over the phone.

In the nineties they did a survey on the American Taxation Office, 80% of callers were given incorrect information.

If it were me I'd be killing two birds with one stone and sending in my application to APRA and at the same time emailing the fund who will probably just turn around and email you back saying you need to apply to APRA first.

Surely the government will have to make an announcement this week on what will be happening because as I said previously, people can't live on air alone. So please people try not to panic, let's see what happens this week.

Hi everyone, i just wanted to point out they while APRA may give you approval at the end day it is still up to your fund whether they will release it... and well with msot funds been frozen the answers no. My understanding from my brother who is Account/CFO is that they wont be releasing any money even with APRA approval, because they simply cant afford to. if you look under contract youlls ee term perserve funds, and wlel they legally have right to say no. Iam so sorry everyone, i would be ringing and checkign your fund before applyign to apra because no sue getting approval if your fund is only going to say no.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi everyone, Yep read the paper this morning. Geez it is going to be very interesting to see how the government is going to handle this situation! APRA had advised me that once I supplied them the 'revised' letters, I would get approval. I've already paid for my op on my credit card and was thinking I would just pay it off when my super money came through. Yikes! How am I going to explain this one to my husband? It's all very confusing isn't it? On one hand the government is telling us to keep spending our money and on the other they are telling us to pay off our debts. It's all a bit too much for this blonde! Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone. Let's try not to panic at this stage. I'm kind of thinking if medical professionals have stated in written letters you have a 'life threatening condition' how could they stop you using your own money? Am I being to optimistic???

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
APRA's website hasn't been update regarding any changes relating to Early Release of Superannuation yet so I doubt any updates will be made until next week.

www.apra.gov.au

I feel sorry for you people who have your applications already lodged but please don't panic at this stage. It's a shame this has happened on a Friday otherwise you would have been able to ring APRA.

There are people who live on their superannuation pensions paid to them on a fortnightly and monthly basis and these have been frozen. Something will have to be done quickly because people can't live on air so try and be patient and try not to stress until we hear what the government intends to do about it.

Violet

Geez violet if I were you I'd create myself a new Yahoo I.D. without the words 'hopelessliar'. When I read your post I thought you were a troll lying to stir up trouble until I read the posts after yours confirming what you said was in the newspapers etc.

I saw it on the TV news this evening but I didn't realise it was related to super funds until I read it here, on the news they were only referring to 'mortgage' related funds.

Sorry I'm not trying to offend you but it will probably take you awhile to build up credibility with an ID such as yours :)

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
By definition, Super funds are managed funds. We just shorten it to 'super'. These managed funds invest primarlily in other managed funds.Managed funds have taken a dive, and we all have seen our super decrease over the last month. managed funds including super are trying to stop customers leaving with their money. If you google your super fund it will usually have the word 'managed' somewhere in the title. The opposite of a managed super fund is a self-managed super fund.
APRA is the regulatory authority that people apply to to have their super released from their managed fund. APRA is the authority that has frozen all managed funds. 6 days ago Rudd announced that he was deliberating freezing all Federal and State governments super funds (used by government employees)for a period of 6 months and use the money to invest in australian infrastructure to stimulate the economy. the unions are going crazy. its not looking good. perhaps the best advice would be to contact your own super fund quickly, and hope that they interpret 'lifethreatening' loosely. the domino effect is going to affect us all, right down to the ability to withdraw our super for lapbanding.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Huh? It's not the super funds it's the managed funds isn't it?? You can't withdraw your money out of super until you reach preservation age. You can move it around funds but you can't withdraw it. There's been a rush of people withdrawing from managed funds because they don't have the government guarantee and that's what they've frozen. If you have enough in your super and you qualify to withdraw it under hardship or medical then you should still be able to withdraw the money.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
it was on the front page of the newspapers today.
bank deposits up to a million are guaranteed.

super funds have had a huge loss over the past 2 weeks and consequently members have removed billions of super dollars and placed them into banks because of the bank deposit guarantee. guess the government really didnt think it thru.

now most, if not all funds have frozen their funds. i would call your super direct and ask, but by monday i'd say they'll all have closed up shop.

Hi Violet, Can I ask where you got this information from? How would I find out if this affects my fund? I thought all money in Australia was guaranteed??? I can't imagine that the funds would be allowed to do this. I'm confused. Thanks in advance P1x

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Miss Belinda, huge congratulations once again. It must be such a relief for you. I am sure I have asked you this in the past so I apologise if I am repeating myself - once you sent your revised letters, did you go to the bottom of the pile? Did it take another full 5 weeks? I faxed my revised letters yesterday. Have a great time in the US and a great weekend. Love, P1xie xo

I received my super money yesterday and the letter from APRA didn't even say my reason for applying for the release of benefits - it just said that it was approved and the amount authorised.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most of the big super funds have now frozen their funds for an indefinate period.

perpetual and AXA (which operate 16 funds between them)have stopped all fund removal except for 'imminent' life threatening conditions, like cancer.

this is not good news for those depending on super withdrawal to pay for their surgery.
