Baileys,

Still have your physical on Jan 9. Make sure when you give them the new letter from your doc that you state you need the full amount that the specialist has quoted.

Hi all,

I didn't have any dramas getting my doctor to write a letter but a friend of mine saw his doctor who said he would only write a letter if it was effecting him mentally or emotionally. His doctor basically said that if being overweight was causing him to be depressed or suicidal he would write the letter. Two days later my friend went back to the doc, said he was extreamly depressed and got the letter there and then!

Rhiain,
My cousin had the same problem with her
GP that she had been seeing for years - happy
enough to give her drugs because
of her obesity and happy to give her a referral
to surgeon but would not write the letter for
APRA because they thought it was unethical - the head doctor even came in and told
her that if obesity was a life threatening illness
he would have been dead a long time ago (he is a
big man)and that no one in that surgery would ever
write the letter for her!!! He even said even if she
was sitting in front of him with bad heart disease he
would not write the letter...anyway I told her to go
to my GP as he had not a problem writing the letter
- he had never seen her before and he happily wrote
the letter! So like Col said - I would go to another
GP.. good luck with that..

Rhiain,

If your GP won't listen then go to another GP and explain that although you don't have the co morbidities yet you want this surgery to avoid them. Obesity is a life threatening illness.

If that fails there are companies that loan money for medical expenses.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I'm soooo peeeved off, my local doctor wont write me a letter stating that I have a "Life Threating Illness" as the only problem I have is my weight and that isnt enough! I'm soooo annoyed! without this I cant have the surgery done! as I can't come up with the $5000 out of pocket expences!!! I'm going to talk to my surgeon on the 20th January and see what he suggests!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Toby

Just a quick question, by your email saying you have already claimed from MBF etc I take it you have already had the surgery. If so and you paid for it without going into debt then you are unlikely to get assistance from APRA. When I looked at taking it from my NSW super (i have almost $50 grand of my own contributions) they advised to be very cautious about prepaying or having the surgery before approval as the only way they will reimberse you post surgery is if you can show that you had to take a personal loan or put it on a credit card if you paid from savings they believe that is sufficient means no matter how short it leaves you..hope this helps.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Banditboy,

I imagine it would be a statutory declaration and on it you would need to detail what your money is spent on and why you can't afford to pay for the surgery yourself. You're definitely not the first one to be rejected, there are a lot of us who have been rejected and have had to reapply.

I'd call APRA and check with them as to exactly what information they require.

Hi banditboy78.

I can't for the life of me remember what it is called but it is a declaration from you stating where all your money goes etc and it also just backs up your previous apra application, if you ring apra they should be able to tell exactley what it is called, sorry i can't be of more help they should have said this when they rejected your application.

Hope that you find a solution.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Just a few questions - I have been going through the inital processes - seeing Surgeon for first consult, tests and getting letters from Surgeon and GP for Apra... Anyway my GP letter simply states that the Surgery is not available in the Public Hospital system (rather than not readily available in the public health system) is this going to be a problem??? (my GP did not even know this could be done and then tried to tell me that putting Im at risk of dying would be ok in lieu of life threatening illness - I put my foot down and said I know for a fact that would be a problem - he fixed it - so I was so focused on that wording that kinda overlooked the other....Also I have just joined a private health fund , so would APRA be concerned that I have private health especially as it is new and could this be cause of a rejection???

Hi everyone

i had my super approved on Friday last week. It took 28 days and i phoned almost every day after the 14 days. I also phoned my own super company and found out that APRA can fax the approval letter directly to your super company and this speeds up the process. I also was lucky enough to to get a very helpful young lady who told me that i could send the withdrawal forms in advance to my super company and that would also speed up the process.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU, I KNOW ITS A TOUGH WAIT!!!

make sure your Drs letters use the exact wording thats on the application

Hi Lisa,

Do you mean in addition to the form that you fill out for Apra? I'd love to know exactly what you mean.

I explained where my money goes in my APRA application completely, and that I can't afford to pay, but they said I had sufficient means...

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi banditboy,

you can still get money from APRA you just to fill in a legal form to say where all your money goes and why you can't afford to pay for this yourself that is what i did and i got mine approved, so don't give up hope.

Hope you reapply and get it accepted.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi everyone!

Just a warning to those of us who earn a fair bit (at least on paper) - I was rejected by Apra... :-(

Purely to help those out there who are applying, I'll forgo my privacy a bit and tell you rough numbers.

(1) They only count the current weekly income on your paychecks, NOT how much you actually have earned in the past year.

(2) Although I'm in debt a fair bit, they don't count that at all.

I am a contract worker and have to pay for quite a bit of stuff (equipment etc) out of my own pocket, HOWEVER on paper I earn quite a bit over a hundred thousand a year at the moment, even though after deductions etc my annual income is less than a hundred thousand. Still, way too much for APRA it seems.

I think I'm the first bandit to be rejected, as far as I can see on this board (wish I could search the board! Stupid yahoo).

My advice is to get a *** job, spend all your money and THEN apply for APRA. ;-)

I also stayed with MBF as I thought I was getting APRA money, and of course - got only $500 back out of $6000. Great. Thanks MBF, jerks.

Hi,

I just wondered whether they make the cheques out directly to the surgeons and Gp's and anaethatist and stuff....or is it just one cheque.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I'm with Q-Super and they are one of the funds you apply directly to them (don't have to go to APRA first) they also say that approvals generally take 10 days, and for anyone who is worried about the 'Super Freezing' business going on at the moment, Q-Super arn't taking part in that. My money stress levels plummented significantly when they told me that:-) ..... now I just have to wait to see if they approve it all (although the lady behind the counter did say that in her experience, they were 'really good' about releasing funds for medical reasons)

cheers,

katrina
