Hi All
I didnt find this site until I was post-op and had no idea that I could get money from my super so I redrew against the mortgage and went ahead. Does anyone know if I can still try for the money from my super or is it too late. It would be great not to be paying interest on the money.

The people at APRA must be wondering why they are being swamped with requests to release funds for the surgery lol!! I am sure they would hardly have heard about lapbanding before this forum was around.
If it wasn't for the info I have read here, there is NO WAY I would have thought of paying for my surgery through my super.
Reading this forum has given me the opportunity to change my life forever - HOW FANTASTIC IS THAT!!???
Good luck to everyone who is going down this path,

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to let you know that I got my letter back from APRA today and they have approved my application for release of funds.
I am so impressed, I sent/faxed the form away on the 1st April and rang them to verify it was received, they told me because of Easter it would take a while. Well the application was processed on the 4th and approved and sent back on the 11th and I received it today..... How fantastic is that .
I rang the Guild Super and they said about 2 weeks to release the funds, so it looks like I'll have the money by the time I have the op on 9th May.
Just thought I'd let you all know in case there are any hopefuls out there. It was very easy and very quick.
23 days until banding day .....Whoo hoo
Cheers Tarnya |

| I am not sure exactly how the $1500.00 is made up. it was just mentioned in the letter from my Dr. I will call them on Tuesday for more info I think, although, since I wrote that last message I have had an endoscope done by my surgeon and he thinks my old band has not slipped and twisted as much s my barium swallow suggested so I may be able to hold off for 12 months and get private cover to pay for the surgery. Fingers crossed. |

Married w Kilos - Have you checked thoroughly what the $1500 you will get back from Medicare represents because you won't be getting anything back for physios, dietitians etc as they are not covered by Medicare (maybe you meant you'd get it back from your private health fund?).

hey all,
I was able to get my total of $15,000 approved from APRA and that is what I asked for. $9000 for my surgeon, $5300 for the hospital and approx $1000 for anethesists.
Note I am going into a private hospital with no private cover at all.
I was worried that I wouldnt get it all as im only 29, but all went well and I was approved last week. Maybe it depends on how much super you have all together, I still have about 30K left I think.

This is what happened to me......
I only got from my super the amount minus the Medicare rebate. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who paid my doctor before my surgery on their credit card and I have had to wait for the doctor's receipt so I could go to Medicare and get the gap to repay her.
I know what you mean, I was in the same pickle of being caught without the full amount.

Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone managed to get 100% of their expenses approved by APRA. APRA has approved the release of our funds but we are short by $1500.00. This is the amount my dr estimated will be re-imbursed by Medicare. However, as I said to APRA, you have to pay it first. I asked them where they thought I was supposed to get that from. Surely there is a system whereby you get 100% of the costs but are required to pay back your rebate into the super fund you took it from? I am going through the Circle of Care which covers the cost of dieticians, physio etc, so the rebate from Medicare will not be given in one lump sum - it will come back in dribs and drabs as I utilise each service. It will take me almost 12 months to re-coup the $1500.00 Medicare rebate. Not Happy Jan! |

Hi, thanks to all the useful info on this thread I have now downloaded the forms from the APRA site, got a letter from my GP, got a letter and estimate of costs from my surgeon. The aneathetists cost weren't included so I now have to get those and also another estimate from the private hospital for the 2 nights I will be staying there, alot of running around but worth it if I am succesfull. This is to cover the gap that my health fund wont't cover.
Anyway will keep you posted as to how I go.

Hi Andrea
You know, I was thinking of asking the forum this very same question. I just knew that I would have problems with Comsuper too! I guess working in the public service for over 20 years told me they would not want to cough up ...
I'm a preserved member with the PSS (I took a redundancy last year)and I phoned Comsuper earlier this week. The fellow I spoke to had no idea what I was asking for and referred me to the form that you complete when you want early release of funds due to permanent incapacity ie terminal illness. I haven't phoned them back yet but I found the following on the PSS website:
"Compassionate release
You can apply to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to approve the release of all or part of your preserved benefit at any age on certain other specified grounds including:
payment of substantial medical expenses
making renovations to your home required due to severe disability
making payments on a loan to prevent the loss of your home.
You can direct any enquiries regarding compassionate release of preserved benefits to the APRA Contact Centre on 1300 131 060. The application form is available on the APRA website at www.apra.gov.au, or can be requested by telephoning APRA as above.
The amount payable is the lesser of the amount approved by APRA or your preserved benefit. Note that if your claim to release part of your preserved benefit on hardship grounds is approved, you will not be able to convert any of your remaining preserved benefit to pension."
It should be the same for CSS members, however, I don't know if you still work for the government. It may be different if you do ie maybe they won't release the funds in that case?
Anyway, as Jan suggested, I'm going to fight this one to the death! It annoys me no end how rules apply for some and not others. Super is Super and all funds should apply APRA's determination the same way.
Good luck

... the reason why I say don't take no for an answer is this....
My ex husband had a knee reconstruction in 1986. We were in the highest cover at the time with Medibank Private. They had never paid out for a knee reco and refused to fund his. He would not take no for an answer. Eventually they changed their policy and ended up covering the lot. Evidently it was the first knee reconstruction ever covered by Medibank. I always think of this case and believe there is always a first time.

Hi Andrea,
Apra can only recommend that your super release the funds for your surgery. I have just successfully paid for my surgery through IOOF.
Call your super fund and ask to speak to a supervisor. Go straight to the top. Obesity is a life threatening condition and the procedure is not readily available on the public health system so you have a pretty good case. Good Luck, just don't take no for an answer. Hassle the living daylights out of them, even if it means they have to change their policies.

Hi there,
I have been reading this thread and would like to know if anyone has gained access to their funds through APRA when your super is with the CSS or PSS? I have been told that the CSS and PSS funds won't release any money for surgery.
Thanks

Hi Anna,
You are not a nuisance! When I first thought I'd really like to be banded it was just a dream because I do not have health insurance and certainly couldn't afford to pay for the operation. It wasn't until I found out about accessing my Super that the dream became a reality. I found out about this ONLY through this forum so I am eternally grateful to everyone who posted on this thread. I am now more than happy to help ANYONE in any way I can. Good luck with it and ask, ask, ask away!!
