Just check with your super funds how much they charge in fees and taxes. I am with Health Super and there were no fees but there is a compulsory 21.5% government tax on outgoing funds. The fund will take this out of the total that you apply for and APRA will usually only approve withdrawl of the amount you ask for. Just add the charge to your APRA application!

My surgeon charges $4200... this includes 12month free visits to him and dietician, free fills and 24/7 phone acess directly to him (that means his mobile phone). It also includes revision, replacement surgery if it slips.
There were cheaper surgeons in Newcastle but I have 4 theatre nurse friends who happen to work with all the lap band surgeons in Newcastle. I am making the right choice.
If you look at numerous threads and see the anguish that a slipped orinfected lapband causes, I'm sure you'd agree that they(outstanding surgeons) are worth their money.
I (hope) only to have to do this once.
A friend of mine was only out of pocket $1800 but it costs her every fill and every dietician visit... and she has to ring her Dr during work hrs.

Hi just giving you an update on my application to APRA I have just rang them and they said they have appproved $4,500 to be released from my super (HESTA) for payment to cover the gap my health fund wont cover, I included receipts from my initial consultation, dietician and estimates from the hospital, surgeon and aneasthetist also letters from the 2 doctors stating I have a life threatening condition, now I just have to send the forms from APRA to HESTA and they will deposit the money in my account in 10 working days, With out this thread I wouldn't have done it so thanks guys...and to anybody else thinking about applying for early release of thier super go for it you have nothing to lose, my B day is next Tuesday so hope to have the $ soon after.

Hi Bossquad,
When I submitted all of my receipts they only totalled around $3000 but I asked for almost $4000. This is because I wanted to have my $500 hospital gap and other expenses covered and I was approved. Just send it in...all they can say is no. Good Luck!

| $4200 seems like a huge gap. Any reason why? |

I applied to have $4200 released, that is the gap difference. I am covered for everything else by NIB and medicare. The only thing I didn't claim for that is (O.O.P) out of pocket is the gap for the anaethesis which is about $800, I didn't want to empty my super account completely.
I had been saving (my cunning kit hubby calls it) and have a couple of grand on the side to pay for the op, if APRA didn't come through, so I decided to pay my NIB excess and the anaethesis out of that.
I do hope to retire some day and wouldn't mind doing it in a tiny bit of style hehehe...

I think i need to go and get a more precise letter.

i have been told by a surgeon that they do not do the gap. has anyone had success? |

Hi Andrea
When speaking to anyone regarding your super on the phone drop the "compassionate grounds" and push "I require surgery for a life threatening illness that is not available under the Public Health System". I know it's one and the same but at least when you say life threatening one would think that the listeners ears would p r i c k up and pay more attention. If they say no still put in your application. I know government super money is hard to get but you really need to persevere and push for it so don't take a verbal no for a final answer make sure you get it in writing. I have had to deal with government super myself (not relating to surgery) and I was told no twice over the phone, even as far as being told it would be a waste of time me submitting an application, I did submit the application including doctors certificates and lo and behold they paid up.

I'm in agreeance with Anna, Apra approved my release last week and they were very specific about it stating "morbid obesity is life threatening and this op is not availablein the Public Health System"
My surgeon wrote a fantastic referral letter, and my GP's was simple and to the point, But I feel that the surgeons letter was the clincher. You are paying the GP $50 for a basic med cert... take the APRA form and show him what it says as a sample... get him to write it word for word if he has to.
I also got my response very quickly... 14 days from posting......Good luck

no that won't do. the form states the letter must use 1 of 3 specific terms. if the doc wants to use depression then the letter must include the words "alleviate an acute or chronic mental disturbance". it also must say that surgery is not readily available in the public health system.
APRA really likes the 'life-threatening' term. they give an example on the form of what your doc could write. that's all they have to write - not include any illnesses if they don't want to.

Ha! maybe I should resign and get my money. I could always get a new job a few months down the track... That way I get a holiday, my operation and access to my money - I would have to work for a few months anyway just to make up the money I am unable to access.
I will still lodge my app through APRA and hopefully get any other moneies laying around. At least then I know what I have in super payments.
Thanks for the info

I'm also with the PSS but my benefits are preserved ie I resigned last year. I got told the same thing but my application was approved on that basis.
Apparently, you can't get any money out of them if you are still a member unless you are on your deathbed in which case you wouldn't be a member for much longer.
I am now working in the private sector and have never claimed Centrelink payments so they will release funds if you are working elsewhere.

Hi Nic,
I am hoping it's not right. I may ring them again tomorrow and see if I can get another opinion. I usually do this however the lady seemed to know exactly what I was talking about.
You are right, I will still lodge through APRA and see what they have to say. I know I have about a grand with another fund so may be able to get that. Every bit helps.
I will let you all know how I get on tomorrow.
Cheers

Hi there,
I am in the PSS Superannuation fund. I gave them a call today to find out if they would release funds for surgery on compassionate grounds.
The reply I was given was a firm "No." I queried why and was advised that funds will not be released if you are still a contributing member to either the PSS or CSS.
Apparently if you no longer contribute money to the fund, have resigned or been on Centrelink payments for the past 26 fortnights they will then consider releasing the money.
I also queried if I went through APRA would this help, the woman advised that this would be of no benefit as legislation states that if you still contribute money to superannuation funds will not be released. I mentioned that other super funds do release money and was told "As the CSS and PSS are government organisations the legislation is as advised.
Very frustrating, seems to me if you are working and paying your taxes you are penalised for doing so. You would think with the high cost of health care in Australia the governement would be more than happy to release funds so hopefully you wont be a costly medical nightmare in retirement. Not to mention the fact that as an employee you can continue to contribute and make up the payment accessed.
I was hoping on accessing the funds to make payment a bit easier on the pocket - my out of expenses for the op after medicare and insurance will still be six thousand plus.
Take care

Hi Claire,
Actually, I have never heard of anyone being knocked back by their Super. I'm sure we would hear if there had been any problems.
I'm sorry I don't know about TWU.
Wishing you success,

Thanks for that Di. I told my husband about it last night and his eyes lit up! He was fully supportive of me re-drawing the money to pay for it but it would be great to not be paying interest on that. I will definitely give it a go.

Hi Carmel,
If you download the application form and have a read of it...it asks whether or not you have paid already. And if you have paid for some or all, how was it paid for.(if thru credit I believe that is better for you..which you have done) I had already paid half via the trusty 'ol visa and was still approved for my whole amount I asked for.
I was very hesistant at first thinking it will be a lot of mucking around. But my husband(whom has been in full support of my surgery) was a little worried how we were gonna have to pay for it all. So I surprised him with this and I got the necessary papers to go ahead...I cant say enough how worth it, it has been....it wont hurt to try, it wont cost you anything just a little time....goodluck
