Hope your right re waiting times. I was told 4 to 6 weeks is a quick turnaround by my clinic. But hey if you have been told different by APRA thats great. Fingers crossed. I sent mine off 14 June and am booked for surgery late July. Keep me posted on how you go with your response.

Goodness, I truly hope the wait isn't six weeks!! I was told both on the phone and in a letter from APRA that the wait time is 10 business days. I applied on 3rd June and my surgery is scheduled for 8th July, I really hope it is processed by then, or I will have trouble stumping up the cash.

Hi rayls
You need to have 2 letters from doctors stating that you have a life threatening illness. The obesity is the illness so back pain etc does not need to be added. The letter also must state that it is not raadily available in the public health system. I got my letters from the GP and the surgeon. You also have to send a quote of costs. APRA is the government body that controls our super. They must approve the release of funds before your superannuation will release any funds. Google APRA to download application form. Approval time is estimated to be about 6 weeks. I just sent my form off so hoping thats the case The rate of tax is approx 21% I think.

Hi all,
I have been reading your messages about getting super to pay for the surgery. I am to have lapband in August and I would like to know can anyone explain it to me how I apply to use my super to pay. I have private health insurance and I will still have to pay $4000 out of my pocket to have the op. I understand you have to get a letter from your GP, does the letter have to say that you have a life threating illness or can it be related to cronic back pain, depression etc. Do I only need one letter from my GP as I have read else where you need Two GPs and one Specialist letter. Who is APRA? Last question if you get access to the super how much tax do you pay for getting early?
looking forward to hearing from anyone

Mels - I also had to get funding through APRA -I have to say that I did send all that they wanted first up - my delay was cause of the Vic bushfires and so many people asking to access their super - so i was disappointed but was prepared to wait - but - good news - when you get the funding - it is almost immediate and my surgery was not as much in the end as i asked for and I got money back from Medicare and they do not want this back ot to know about it - they said - its my money and i probably need to recoup... so hang in there - once they say YES - it is almost immediate.
Cheers Patti

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Just a word of warning ladies - APRA seem to be getting tougher and tougher. I finally got word that APRA have approved my application this week. My application was firstly received by them on the 8th of September, 2008. However, on three occassions I was asked to get the wording changed and on the last occassion I had to supply them with a Stat Dec. Each time they ask for something - your application gets put back to the bottom of the pile. So make sure you get it right the first time. I faxed the APRA letter to my super fund (PSS) this week and last night I received a letter and documentation from them asking for more documentation to be completed. The saga continues, however, I am getting there - there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck with it all! Love, P1xie xo

Update

Was scheduled for surgery on 2nd April but due to the slow release of funds from my super company, at the last minute I had to re-schedule to the next day to wait for the funds to clear. What a stress it was but all worked out in the end. What I hadn't counted on was the large amount of tax they took out. Anyways 2 weeks banded and very happy now. Good luck to those still going through the process.

***Just to Update***

When sending in your approved APRA letter to your superannuation company, please be aware that Pharmacists can no longer certify identification. Only Police officers, justice of the peace & people who have worked in a post office for longer than 5 years can do it.

Just wanted to give u all a heads up, as I now have to re-send in my certified ID, which delays things another week.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
quick update: the good news is I've been approved!(yay)the bad news is that the money hasn't been released yet and the op is next Thursday (yikes. Just phoned my super company and they are going to try to expedite payment. My surgeon is cool but the anaesthetist not so much, so yeah still in a bit of limbo. I will let out a relieved sigh once the payments have been made to everyone. Wish me luck guys! Almost excited...

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Thanks Lora

What I did find out was that my husband had "unrestricted non-preserved" funds available that I was able to withdraw without having to go through APRA. Even after tax it should still be enough to cover my surgery:)

All I had to do was fill in a very simple form - no hoop jumping or explanations as to why I wanted the money.

Woooooooooohooooooo today I got a personal loan approved to cover everything .. I wasn't sure the bank would approve a loan for $18000 for a medical procedure so I'm jumping for joy. No more trying to chase a letter from a GP and all the frustration and heartache that went with that. I saw the surgeon, Dr George Hopkins this afternoon and my surgery is booked for the 11th May. Finally things are going my way... looking forward to joining the bandster club!!!!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I got my call from APRA on friday, saying that my letter from the Surgeon wasn't right, but if I forwared them the correct one/new one then they will approve it. The only problem is that they will only cover the Surgeon's out of pocket expences and my HBA out of pocket expenses they wont cover my living expences whilst i'm off work... but oh well, i can work around that!

Hi tntbcrwa,

You have to ensure that it state that it is "life threatening" & "not readily available in the public health system". It stated that on both of my letters & I managed to get funds through APRA. As far as I know u have to go through APRA as they r the governing body, but just contact your super company & confirm.

Goodluck

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Can someone please tell me exactly what wording needs to be in the letter from the Doctors?

And is it possible to go direct to your superannaution and request the money, or do you HAVE to go through APRA?

Don't give in! go to a totally different doctors! You will get the letter if you keep trying. I'm not sure on the personal loan, so long as you have a good credit rating, you should be okay.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi,

I have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with APRA.

I booked my surgery date for 3 months from the date I lodged apra application.

It was the most stressful time in my life. I got a stock standard super letter from Surgeon's receptionist and told to get my GP to copy this letter word for word. So my GP did this, and my withdrawl from super was approved but it did take about 5wks. As it turned out I got my money 2days before I was due to have my surgery.

I asked for $6500 and they took out the tax portion as well so allup out of my super about $8000 was withdrawn.

If I couldnt access my super money I would not have been able to have the operation due to my finances could not pay a loan.

I guess it all worked out for me, and i hope it works out for you.

After much soul searching overnight I think I have decided to try getting a personal loan for the surgery and giving up on trying to access my superannuation. Have people been successful lending money for lapbanding surgery???

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
All the information I have read is that any money withdrawn from your super is taxed at 21.5%, other than that I'm not sure sorry!

I put in my application on the 10th February, and I'm expecting an answer on the 26th March, which is a little over 30 BUSINESS days, becareful when waiting for a reply, we all think that 30 days is a month, how they count is is 5 days a week, so 30 days is actually 6 weeks.

My super fund (AMP) then said it takes up to 10 business days to release the funds.
