Not sure if I can help or not??
I just got my approval letter from APRA and I had applied for all of my costs including anaethetist, Dr out of pocket, dietician and sent themthe quotes. I added it up and added on 21% and my letter states the amount is net of tax and charges, which when on the phone enquiring, she said they take the tax out. As for where it goes or if it is added to income, I am not sure. I have read in other blogs on here it is added to your income. For those with private health, remember when you pay over $1500 out of pocket(I think it is, don't quote me on the amount) for medical expenses you can claim back at tax time, 20% of what is over $1500.
Hope this helps.
Michelle

If you withdraw from your super, how does the compulsory tax come out? Do they automatically take it before they deposit it into your account or is it added to your taxable income on your tax return? I hope not as I would have to pay back my student loans at a much higher rate if it were considered taxable income.

Hi again
Well I have just scrolled down and read a bit more (at work so trying to scroll very quickly!!) and Ginny has given a good bit of detail about how to go about accessing super. So If I go on to the APRA website it looks like there will be some information there for me?
Thanks
Sharon

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi everyone
I have just discovered this site (payment through Super) and had no idea you could access super for surgery. Could someone please tell me what you need to do to actually apply for the super and whether it is a hard process to get the funds? It would be fantastic not to be out of pocket and be able to access the funds for this op. Does anyone at consultation advise you about this or do you just go straight to your super fund?
Looking forward to some answers.
Cheers to you all
Sharon

Thats great Erin.....

See how important it is to stand up for yourself... Life lesson number 1.

You, telling him how important it is to you broke down his "god complex" instead of thinking what he thought about lapbanding, he most prob saw it from your veiw.

Good luck with Dr Martin... THINK POSSITIVE... and don't take no for an answer

I HAVE THE LETTER!!!
My GP initially refused but I delivered my spiel about how important it was to me, and he wrote me the letter and gave me the referral!
HOORAY!!
Now I just need Dr Martin to agree....

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Susie,
awww hun let me know how you go, I'm so scared it won't work. Nothing else ever has!
If the GP says no, that will be the second GP to refuse me. I was hysterical the first time, but that GP was a jerk who said he wouldnt refer me until I had spent 12 months with a dietician he recommended.
I am not paying those fees for 12 months just to prove to him that it won't work. Nothing EVER has for me. At least my new GP understands that as he has a better understanding of PCOS.
I hope it goes well tonight...its only the first small step of the journey and I'm already stumbling..

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Erin,
I also have PCOS and was banded 3weeks ago today. I was told that it is very good surgery for us and so far I am overwhelmed with my complete lack of interest in any of the junk I used to "need" daily. I am still in the recovery stage and know my appetite will increase but I also know what it feels like to have such a reduced food obsession!
If you think this is the right thing for you, go for it and keep looking till you find a supportive GP!
Best of luck with your journey!
Cheers, Susie

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Well the next time I post, it will be with good or bad news. I have a spiel all ready to give him if he says no to me. Granted he and I didn't speciy which weight loss surgery I definitely want to opt for. It all depends on what Dr Martin thinks is best, as I have PCOS and i need to be sure that the surgery will actually work.
Does anyone know what types of surgery Ian Martin performs? Who has experience with him?
Wish me luck girls...

If he says 'no' Erin, maybe try one of those free medical centres. I don't think he will though, seeing as he's calling you back.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I was pleasantly supprised that he was actually quiet supportive of it, he just didn't approve of people willy nilly deciding to have surgery.

If you ring the surgeon you are going to use, I'm sure he will have written dozens of letters for super funds.
My Dr letter was wonderful...I took that to the GP and he was only too happy to write one after that.

If your GP wont give you a referal...see another Dr..

Cheers Tarnya

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Erin,
I understand how you feel, about 6 months ago I asked my GP about Lap Band surgery and he laughed at me and said I didn't need it... I went away devistated because 1: I thought I did (my health records prove it) 2: I didn't stand up for myself... it's my body.

I went away and half heartedly started to read up and learn everything I could about it...especially the bad stuff, and I have to say although I know all the risks there is definately more good stuff written than bad...
I rang a surgeon (after investigating him as much as I could) went to his info night, got all his literature, read that.
THEN.........
I went back to my surgeon steely faced, determined and not ready to budge and said
" I have DECIDED to have Lap Banding. I have been to the Dr seminar, I am completely informed, I want you to give me a referral please"

He looked at me stunned... asked me a few questions on it (testing me) and because I knew my stuff he was on board.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Wow Erin, are you sure your GP is not confusing gastric lap band surgery with gastric bypass surgery? Bypass carries a bit of risk, but lap band is a very low-risk procedure! I've heard of GPs not wanting to endorse when they feel that the patient wouldn't benefit from banding, or has not much weight to lose, but never because of 'risk'

If your GP won't do a letter, just go to another. I'd only been to my GP once or twice, & she happily wrote an APRA letter. I just had to tell her the right wording to put in the letter.

Good luck - you'll be fine!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hello girls, this is the first time I've posted!
Today I asked my GP to provide the letter for me, for my APRA approval...
he hesitated, and said the surgery is so risky that he didn't know if he could bring himself to endorse it! I almost cried.... he asked me to come back on Thursday and he would make his mind up then.
Does he not realise that him bringing himself to endorse it may be risky, but he is also in a position to change the rest of my life? To have me not glance at myself in passing reflection anymore and want to cry... to not become depressed for days after clothes shopping... to not be ashamed to eat in public.
Has anyone else had trouble with their GP?
I want to see Dr Martin in Brisbane... does anyone know how I might go with the letter from him? Everyone else seems to have found it so easy...
Thursday night seems an eternity away...
Erin

Well what a wonderful day!!! I phoned APRA and they told me I had been successful and the letter was in the mail. I faxed my application on the 20th April, so it a pretty quick process. I am so excited, 3 weeks today until I will be banded.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Lucy,
GO TO: www.apra.gov.au (remove any spaces that appear in this web addy) & click on 'Superannuation', then 'Early release of Superannuation benefits' in the drop-down list. You will find the info required, plus a printable application, which may be faxed or mailed with your other letters & docs. On approval by APRA (they will snailmail you), their letter is sent to your super fund to request payment.

In reply to your Q on the other thread, APRA are the body who consider applications for early release of super for ALL funds. The super fund still has the final word though. Even if APRA has approved release of funds, the super fund still has the power to knock it back, though I've never heard of it happening.

Good luck to you & your friend!
