That is a great suggestion Tyrlair, I think you are allowed to change it once a year, without too much hassle. Isn't it amazing that (I am assumming Comsuper ansd PPs are for government workers)that the government based supers are the hardest to deal with. Theoretically It's our money that we are supposed to LIVE on later in life but they don't want us to do all in our power to get to old age... go figure...

See if you can roll-over your super to another fund. In many jobs, you are allowed to change your super fund.

Yes, I think it is grossly unfair. I think if APRA approve the release then every super fund should release the money. Why go through APRA if the fund isn't going to honour their decision? After all, it is your money.

thanks Anna, even if it takes a few years its worth it for the others who may not be able to afford it. You would think with obesity one of the major factors increase in health system needs and increase in sick leave they would consider changing the rules. Worth a shot..

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
re the PSS or Comsuper in general. You definitely will not get anything out of them if you are still a contributing member or are on LWOP. I got mine because I am a preserved member. When I called them they told me that as well - that I must be a preserved member. That is backed up on their form (the one you send in with your APRA letter)as follows:

"Even if APRA has approved release, the PSS can only release funds if you are a preserved member. If you are a current contributor to the PSS, or are on leave without pay, we are unable to release any money to you."

The form is called "PSS Early Acess to Preserved Superannuation Benefit - Benefit Application Form & Information Leaflet" which you can find on their website.

Experience tells me you're not going to beat a government department into submission lol but it might be worthwhile approaching your local member, however, I know Comsuper is not the only fund that will not release money for this purpose to current contributors. Sadly, it's not going to happen for you - even if they agreed tomorrow to change the rules it would take years to come into effect. You know how government departments work!

Cheers
Anna

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I'm with the PSS and am currently waiting on approval from APRA. I had a look at their web site and i could have sworn it said you could. I've just pasted a few lines from one of their forms below which says they should do it.
It does say something about you must be a preserved member.

APRA Releases.
If you do not qualify for early access to your
superannuation benefi ts on severe fi nancial hardship
grounds, you may consider asking the Australian
Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to approve
the release of benefi ts on other specifi ed grounds.
Some examples of the types of expenses you may be
able to claim include:

Medical expenses

Hope this helped in some way.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
congratulations Lauren & DI

I'm glad it's all coming together, the time now will Zoom by. I have my op tomorrow, and knowing its all paid is reassuring, And thats thanks to this thread, I would never have contemplated it if I hadn't been visiting here. Now I have the money that I had saved as a back up for my time off work (permanent casual that doesn't get paid for time off).

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
has anyone done more research about being a existing pss member (current contributor) and whether or not you can access it. I called pss and they said no. I can pay for my op in july but I feel sorry for all those people who might have to rely on their pss super to pay. I'm going to make this an issue and go to my local member. Perhaps I should get a petition going whatcha think people??

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Everyone,

If anyone is claiming from the TWU Super Fund, expect to wait 3 weeks from the time they receive your application to the day you get a cheque in the mail.(which will take another 3-5 days to clear) 4 weeks total time.

Pretty bad turn around time compared to others.
Has anyone else experience the same problem.

Claire :)

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Lauren,
I agree with anna, I sent my applic to Apra over the Easter period and my was approved in 4-5 days, but the paperwork didn't arrive for another week after that. I would call them, they are extremely helpful. It's prob been authorized and sent out, so ring and just confirm, it will ease your mind at least.

Cheers Tarnya

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Yes, Michelle, give APRA a call. 13 days is a long time for them to have the application as they are very fast. I called them too and they told me 5 working days was what they aim at and when I called on the 6th day I had my answer! They are really nice people and don't mind you calling. Good luck with it - I know how stressful the waiting period is.

Cheers

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Lauren,
Sorry if I got the "net" part wrong, I always get confused, net and gross!!! I would phone APRA and see how your application was going as that was how I found out mine was approved. It wasn't for another 5 days until I got my approval letter. Then atleast you wont have to worry as you will know what stage it is at.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Thanks for that info. Just what I wanted to know. They will calculate the tax and pay it to the ATO. Phew! I thought I'd be up for a huge bill.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I was recently approved through my super fund and asked for a nett amount and I got exactly what I requested. As far as I am aware (pretty sure on this), all super funds have to take the tax out (Australian Taxation Office requirement) so all you have to do is ask APRA for the nett amount that you want and their letter will say the approved amount is nett of tax. If you don't ask for a nett amount, tax will still be taken out and you will end up with less than your costs so you need to be sure to say you want a nett amount. You don't have to calculate the taxt yourself. The super fund pays the tax direct to the ATO.

Hi All

I asked for $4200 and thats exactly what was deposited into my bank, I was told that the paperwork that they sent me in the mail have to be given to my accountant at tax time and I will prob pay tax on the amount then.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Lauren,
I put down I wanted $7000 and they are relesing for me $5880, which covers my out of pocket, my dietician and the anaethetist. So I would say $12000 plus 21% is $14520. If you have any other queeries the people at APRA are really helpful and should be able to tell you the correct amount, but I am guessing I have done this correctly.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Michell

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi everyone another update on the early release of super process, I received my approval letter from APRA then I rang HESTA my super fund, to ask them to send they form they need to release my super.. I received that yesterday, they also wanted 3 types of certified id so I went down to the post office, got photocopies of everything and a jp to certify the id and sent it off registered post to HESTA. So far I have been out of pocket $250 excess which I paid to the private hospital last Tuesday when I was banded, the surgeon and anaethetist said they will bill me at the end of the month so hopefully the $ will be here by then. Hope this is a help to anyone about to go through the process.
cheers Ginny
