Hi All!
I am being banded on 3 July and have private health cover. After reading the 'threads' I am now aware that I can claim the out of pocket expenses through my Super? Thanks because I would not have known otherwise.
I received the letter from my surgeon today to send to the super fund but my question is......do I call them first or do I write a covering letter requesting how much I need?
I am with Australian Eligible Rollover Fund (is anybody else?) If so, how did you go? How long does it take?
I am new to all this and not quite sure if this has been answered beforehand on another thread, so if it has, I do apologise!
Thanks heaps |

Hi Talusha,
I am pretty sure you can use your Mums super cos you are a dependant. I believe this to be true cos there have been ladies on here that have had theres paid for by their husbands super so I would think the same would apply.
The other thing is I would suggest to put in a quote for as much as you think you will need. I only sent in receipts/quotes for around $$3500 but I asked for $4800 to cover other costs like, dietician costs, initial consultation. When you read the form it actually only says to send in 1 of the quotes not all, and I didnt have to prove the other amount I wanted. i wish I had asked for more cos as I look with fills etc there is still more costs to cover. I pulled from my own super and was approved exactly what I wanted.
Good luck, I was a bit daunted at the process at first and kept putting it off, and finally just filled it out. I actually didnt get the cheque in the mail for my super fund till about 3 wks after surgery. At that point i had already paid for it all, mostly on the credit card, but the forms do also specify if some or all have been paid for and by what means.....as in cash or credit. It is so worth it!!!!

Does the super release have to be your own? Will the allow my mum to release her super to pay for my operation? i am still living at home, and am her dependant, we have got the paperwork from the APRA (think thats it) just need to get the letters from the surgeon and my GP, i see the surgeon on the 18th of june and will get it then.
My doctor should give me the letter, as it was his idea to get the surgery in the first place, so im guessing im safe in that area.
Also, the reception quoted me about 3 grand out of pocket, i am with hba, and apparently they are good at this operation covering it? I also have top cover, so dont have to pay for hospital stays, is that normally included in the estimate she gives? i know the anistetic person is included in that she said. |

For those curious, the APRA letter arrived in 7 business days (was approved after 5) and says:
I refer to your application blah blah etc.
While it is necessary for APRA to approve a release of your benefit if this is appropriate under the Regulations, the final decision on whether a release is permitted rests with the trustee of your fund.
Having fully considered your application, I am satisfied that the release is required to pay for your medical treatment and you do not have the financial capacity to meet that expense.
Therefore, I, a delegate of APRA, determine under subregulation etc. etc. that you have satisfied a condition of relese on specified grounds. Further, I determind than an amount of no more than XXXXX (gross, more than I asked for) may be released from your[name of company]Super to enable you to meet that expense.
To request payment of your benefit from your fund, you should send the original or a certified copy of this letter to your fund.
Sincerely etc. |

I've actually never heard of the credit check.
I thought at the most they might want to make sure you don't have thousands sitting in an account somewhere.
I couldn't imagine why they would do a credit check.
Sorry i couldn't help anymore.
Maybe someone else may have heard about this. |

bossquad5.
Do you currently work for the ATO ?????
If so i hope you're not planning on trying to get any funds out of your super. Unless your a preserved member which means you do not work there and contribute they will not release ANY funds to you.
Would you believe i got my approval letter from APRA but Comsuper (PSS) will not give me any of the money.
Since then i have had to cancel all of my appointments.
I actually had my surgery date of 16th of June.
Not any more.
I now have to wait until at least January when my private health fund kicks in.
IF it's any consolation or you can wait that long, with the new budget it looks like the Government super funds will start releasing funds as of 01/07/2008. Still a long way off. |

Hi this is my last update, I received my super cheque today for $4,500 which is what I asked for. It took 10 days from when I posted the application to HESTA.
If it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't have done it or even know that you could do it.

Hi Hopefulbaner...
I too am with PSS and they are B@ast@rds.. They wouldn't release my super either cos they "apparently" can't calculate how much super has been contributed by you and how much has been contributed by your employer...
After a fit of tears and heart ache, the girl that i work with asked me if i had rolled my super over from any other private enterprise companies i have worked for. I wasn't sure so i phoned BT super and i found that i had just over $12k there... I felt like there was a party in my head and everyone was invited!!! I was soooooo relieved, i can't even tell you how much!!! So anyways, don't stress, where there is a will, there is a way!!!
I truly believe that there is a higher power out there helping us get what we need in this life...
Good luck!! xx Anna xx |

Just in case anyone else has to claim through the TWU Superfund be aware that it takes them at least 3 weeks to issue you a cheque after receiving the ok from APRA.
Keep in mind also a cheque takes at least 3 days to clear. :) |

That's terrible and pretty unfair since most other super funds will do it. I hope your surgery isn't delayed and that you find a way.
Getting nervous about my application now. Will ring Apra tomorrow as it has been 5 days. |

This seems to be a hurdle for some people in here, myself included.
I haven't heard back from APRA but i rang the PSS myself and they have also confirmed that as long as you ARE employed and a contributing member there is no way they will release ANY FUNDS whatsoever.
You can imagine how mad and upset i was on Thursday as i've been to all of my appointments and even have June 16th booked as my surgery date.
I now have to either cancel everything or see if they can defer it for 2 weeks while i see if the bank will give me the $12,500.
Sounds like the military super are the same from reading previous replies.
Just another curse for working for Johnny. |

Hi bossquad5
Even though they have said no over the phone, I would still do the application and submit it. I have heard of some funds saying no over the phone and when the application has gone in it has been approved. It's worth a try anyway.
Best of luck

I wasn't going to go the full-fee option but decided that I couldn't spend another year being this heavy, so I changed my mind.
I only have 18 000 in my super account and I'm asking for 15 000. I'm 31 so I guess I'll have plenty of years to build it back up. I'll make my own contributions from now on too. I'll let you know in a few days whether it was approved. I'm not too panicked as a relative has offered to pay for the lot. However, I'd rather pay on my own.
I got the surgeon's letter first, then went to a free medical centre near my work(where I got my referral from) and showed it to a GP. He got his receptionist to type out the exact same letter and he signed it. I express posted it three days' ago. It only took 10 minutes and no questions were asked.
My regular (but expensive) local GP doesn't even know about it yet. I have a feeling she wouldn't approve. Won't she get a surprise!? |

Bossquad. I currently pay into Guild Super and that is the fund that I got my money to have the surgery. I only have about 30k in there and was worried that there wasn't enough, because I wanted $5k that maybe they wouldn't let me have it.
But they okayed it and I have now had my surgery and its paid for
