Ok i starting to worry abit now lol, we sent the forms off yesterday, both to APRA and aus super, as mum rang APRA and told them im booked in for 2 weeks time, they said to write on a peice of paper to send the approval straight to aus super, and to put on the super papers that i am booked in for the 25th of this month so need the money by then if possible.
I know it takes about 5-7 working days to clear through APRA, but aus super wont send the paperwork back yet if the approval isnt in yet will they? she also rang them and they said send it yesterday aswell express post we sent both as.
Am i worrying over nothing? |

I am not sure why you have to tell your surgeon you are intending to pay through superannuation. Mine gave me a piece of paper with costs and likely refunds from Medicare and private funds, but never asked me how I intended to find the money.
If your GP will write the letter for you for APRA to release the super, I can't see why you need to discuss it with the surgeon (or more realistically with their receptionist). |

Mum is going to call APRA tomorrow, regarding sending her forms off, if I am over 18 am i still a dependant if i living there and she supporting me? We think it is, but she said she will ring to make sure.
also, after they approve it you have to send to your super yes? can you ring your super to get the forms sent out to you so as soon as you get your approval letter (or call them to find out if its been approved or not etc and they tell you yes) you can send then to speed the process along abit? We have 2 1/2 weeks till my op, you think that is enough time? |

| Yep, I paid the 21% but the tax rate is much higher than that. The medical offset helped a lot but I'm still left owing. I checked with the tax office and all is correct. I just hope other people who have HECS/HELP (Uni) debts are aware of this before withdrawing super. You should ask your employers to take out more tax to cover it. It was still worth it for me because I got my op but boy, it was expensive! |

| Yes he only takes on one new patient a week. I was lucky as I contacted him when I got private cover and he was ready to do me 3 days after it kicked in. He also consults 100ks away from where I live which is better that the 400ks to Adelaide. Try to get on his cancellation list. |

Hi all
No luck finding a doctor in Adelaide who will accept payment through super. My hubbie rang about 6 surgeons offices today but no-one had heard of it happening - so guess he'll have to wait for his insurance to kick in in 8 months!
Anybody hear of any doctors happy to do it let me know! - In melboune perhaps.....??????????

I have just done my tax for this financial year through e-tax. I haven't yet lodged it.
Since I withdrew around 14000 from my super, this is counted as income in the ETP section. It put my taxable income up to (60 000+)which meant:
*A huge medicare levy/surchange.
*Higher HECS/HELP (ie university loan repayments)as my employer did not take these amounts out at my 'new' and high income rate.
I now owe the ATO around $2000. I will ring the ATO tomorrow to check all is correct. I just wanted to let you know of my experience. There is no question on e-tax about compassionate grounds. It's all just income. |

steelysheep,
I haven't heard of anyone trying this before but it might just be worth giving them a call.
I doubt how you'd go, after all they only release the super if you are in dire need of the medical procedure and have no other way of paying for it. But then again I've not heard of them checking to find out either.
Best of luck with it and let us know how you get on.

Hi Leanne
Yes you're right about that too but with his attitude towards getting 'paid' he probably eliminates HCC holders too. Something must have happened to him with not getting paid for him to take that approach but geez how dare he make assumptions on someone's ability to pay.

Hi Lou
I see your point but pensioners especially disability pensioners and anyone that has a Health Care Card don't have a lot of cash and if he took that approach with everyone he wouldn't be doing surgery for those people either. I'm a disability pensioner and I paid upfront but had I been admitted to Intensive Care I would have been up the creek financially. It just doesn't make sense to me.

It's sort of not surprising that the surgeon has said that because to access super you have to prove that you don't have a lot of cash and maybe he got stung with someone with a complication and they didn't have the means to pay for it. As we know most of the banding is done in private hospitals and even an overnight stay can set you back thousands of dollars.
I've accessed my husband's super just to pay for the gap and it does worry me that if something goes wrong and I need to go back to hospital then how are we going to pay for it, even with private insurance, given that the surgeons charge so much. I guess the answer is to just keep dipping into his super but a lot of people don't have a huge amount of super they can access.

Hi Sonya
I've never heard of a doctor refusing a patient using superannuation before. I don't understand how the risks of costs can go over a quote unless you are one of the rare people that has a severe complication and has to go to Intensive Care for a week or so. In that case he would have that problem with anyone regardless of super.

Hi
Anyone know of a doctor in Adelaide who is willing to do banding using Super? My hubbie has seen Dr Leong but he won't do it - says the risk of costs going over the quote/payout too big.

Awww man...
I got my approval from APRA no problems, received the letter early last week and sent it through to my super fund. Got the release approved fine too, but they screwed up and now I'm sweating it...
I requested they deposit it directly into my bank account which is normally fine. I need to pay for my surgery no later than this coming Tuesday. So I call them to ask when I might receive the money and "whoops... we've accidentally sent a cheque. This should take 5-7 working days. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
The deadpan voice I was talking to just DIDN'T seem to understand my need to fix this IMMEDIATELY. "Nothing we can do sorry. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
Grrrr I asked to speak to a supervisor, explained that I HAD to pay for my surgery etc, and NOTHING I said (or sobbed) helped.
She couldnt even guarantee me the cheque had been sent!
Everything has to go wrong at the very LAST minute!
Aaaah I can only laugh. |

I think you just need to reinterate what the dr's are going to write.
I "think" I wrote. " I am morbidly obese, with a BMI of 41.5. I have recently tested positive for insulin resistance with raising glucose levels which is a pre indicator of type 2 diabetes, my blood pressure is also on the rise. I have family history of diabetes, blood pressure, heart and kidney problems. I do not want to have these life threatening health problems and th lapband will enable me to loose weight to avoid this."
Hope that helps. My approval was issued from APRA in about 5 days
Good luck
cheers Tarnya
