Can anyone help me out... I am wondering if my out of pockets costs (the quotes) add up to $3000 and I ask for $4000 just to cover the just in case factor. Will APRA approve it? Anyone had experience of this before?

I once withdrew super on the grounds of financial hardship and to prove it other than submit my bills etc I had to show that I had been receiving full Centrelink Sickness Benefits for at least six months.

You'll find it's a lot easier to withdraw claiming a life threatening medical condition, they can't argue with a doctor's certificate.

I don't think applying on the grounds of financial hardship will help you much.

Apart from requiring a lot more documentation about your income and expenses, the amount released will only be what the super fund considers to be necessary to meet the shortfall in your immediate living expenses (not your surgery). Also, there is some funny stuff about students when it comes to financial hardship; they can argue your inability to cover your expenses is due to your choice to study rather than to work.

Apply under the medical treatment category.

Hi Jackie, yes you can get the super money to just cover the gap. Just make sure that any money you get includes the tax otherwise you come up short. I don't know the answer to the other questions but I'm sure others will.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi everyone!

Have just spent the last few hours wading through all the posts re. paying for the banding surgery using funds released from your super. There is just a few quick questions id love to clear up if anyone has the answers?:

1) Can you apply to have super released to cover the gap when you have private health insurance. ie. I have private health insurance, so will only need around $3500 (net)to cover the fees, which i wont be able to do on my own. Will they approve this? What if you dont have much super (ie. $7000 in super and want to withdraw half?)

2)Has anyone dealt with Health Super in asking to release funds? If so i would love to hear how you went? Apparently some super funds are tougher than others..does anyone know where Health Super stands with this?

3)I am a full time student, recieving youth allowance and working casually, so financially things are pretty tough, does this mean i should go down the 'financial hardship' road? or simply stick to the 'life threatening medical condition that requires treatment that is not readily available under the public health system' track?

Your help would be very much appreciated!

- Jackie =)

I know it's stupid, but that's what she told me! When i told her it was odd, that's when she said it was close to looking like a fax!
I don't know, but did what was asked.
It seems everyone you speak to in government departments has a different idea what is required.

Anyway, good luck on your application!

Blue biro versus black biro, this is getting ridiculous. I worked in the government for most of my life and on legal documents we had to use black biro because more often than not blue biro didn't come out in photo copies.

you still have to give details of your financial situation but they don't seem to do any checking. i don't know if they write to the doctor later or have some way of checking but it seems to me to be an easy way to get money out of your super when there is really no other way of getting it. it seems to be an honour system with them that they trust you will use it for the purpose you state you are using it for.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I think people are getting confused about the rules. There are a number of grounds for getting superannuation released. One is financial hardship, another is life-saving medical treatment not readily available through the public system. Lapbanders are using this 2nd reason. As I understand it, there is no requirement to also meet the financial hardship grounds. But see for yourselves:

Mel
I rang Australian Super this morning and spoke to a lovely lady who told me they do not accept faxes at all. All documentation must be original. The forms i down-loaded are fine, just the APRA form has to be the one they send you. Also, when you get a JP or whoever to sign a photocopy of your passport or license, it MUST be in blue biro.Something about black being too close to being a fax! I know, but she said if it's not done, it could be delayed.I did all they required, it's posted and when i get approved i will let you know.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi there,

Jashanco10, I was not in what I would even call reasonable hardship and I got a super release. Just a single income from my husband and certainly not in 'hardship' I never actually got my pay out till after the surgery and had paid for eveything prior to surgery mostly on credit. Your assets still need to be somewhat low and higher liabilities.

The money you earn will affect your application, But an application does not cost you anything except for time, so it is worth trying!. I was not asked to prove anything I wrote either. Not receipts for payments or request for the final $ amount or prove wages. In regards to what you have in your super I am not sure how it will affect a pay out but I only about $10K and asked for $4000 to cover any excess from my private health fund.

Good luck it is so worth it!!........Di

To talusha2283

Maybe you should call them and ask them to fax it to Australian Super.Have the fax number ready for them and explain why you need them to do it.The girls at APRA are really lovely to talk to and very helpful.

Worth a try, good luck!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
From reading these message boards,APRA approves if you can show reasonable hardship in not being able pay for the op.I would hazard a guess 2 wages still would not mean you could afford it.We all have expenses that make it very hard to be able to save!

On saying that, i would still put the form in, you just never know.If they refuse it, ask them why and put in another. I think as long as your GP and surgeon write the correct wording in their letters,i don't see why not.

My surgeon's letter was not real good, but i thought i would try.I wrote a really good story as to why i needed it, and it was accepted.

Good luck!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi All,

I am new to this site and I to am just in the process of filling out an Apra form to access super. Can anyone tell me if the amount of money you earn affects Apra decision on releasing the funds? As my ex husband and I are trying to work things out for a future again, I am now not sure if it will jepodise or help my situation if I put our wages together or if I remain as a single income. The other thing is I only have $18k in my super and need to withraw $14k does anyone know if this also can affect Apras decision. As you can see I just want it to go thru like everyone else.

Oops! should have stated a bit more clearly...the passport or driver's licence verification is to Australian Super, not APRA!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Sorry it took so long to answer, modem probs! I posted it late on a Sunday night 3rd July at local P/O...in SA P/O are not open on weekends...I then rang them on Wednesday to make sure they received it. They had on the Tuesday, the very nice lady gave me a Ref number to quote, and said to ring them on Wednesday(yesterday) to find out if it was approved. It was,and my approval arrived today...alas too late to fax off. So, all up 7 working days.

If you are asking for under $10,000,you only have to get 1 document verified.I will do my passport, get my bank manager to sign to verify it's me,and ring them to see if i can fax it to them.I'm not sure, but did see something about not faxing documents, but i think that you could not fax an actual passport without a verifying signature.(not the passport itself LOL but the faxed copy of it without the verifying signature!)

I will post here tomorrow when I have done it.
