At first when I read Brett's message I was affronted, but really he makes a good point. Not half an hour ago I asked my husband if he would access his super if I couldn't get mine out for the LBS and he straight away said yes. But what if we did (god forbid) split up...he would then have financial hardship that was entirely "my fault". Maybe it's better to consider the money a kind of "loan" and I can make the commitment to my hubby to put more into my super once I am well to make up the amount I "borrowed" from our retirement fund.

Interesting. Maybe different for us because we both work, no kids, and I have only been well enough to work part time for most of the marriage - he has supported me no questions asked. I think ours is a partnership?!

Brett

What can I say but

For better, for worse,
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health.

That's your marriage contract.

I have had paid employment since I was 14 (I'm now 27)so I don't have to 'borrow' money off my Husband. Luckily our marrige is a partnership, 50/50, neither of us is worth more than the other. Maybe the question you should be asking is 'Am I married to the right person?'

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I'm committed to my wife, but even $4k taken out of my super at this stage of my life (I'm 28) could make up to $70k difference to my retirement package. If I withdrew from my super for my wife's LBS I'd be putting the money back in as soon as I could, say $1000 a year for 7 years (Yes, that's right, $4k for 30 yrs is the same thing as $6.5k for 25 yrs at 10% interest).

I don't mind that. It seems like a good life decision to me.

I'm very uncomfortable with making a choice like this, setting myself back in life for her, and leaving myself open to potentially large financial risk (remember, the number is $70k, not $4k) if our relationship isn't very strong. Put simply, I'm wondering how YOU girls would feel if your husband informed you that he'd be willing to LOAN you the money at a particular interest rate, and that he'd pay of the loan on your behalf while you're married (that's fair, in my situation I'm the one with the paid job, we share all our money anyway...) but that the remainder of the repayment would be entirely her problem if we divorced.

This is like a post-nup agreement...

We've never had any discussions about splitting up, and I don't want to. It's just that things have been hard lately (she's broken 3 of my 5 'dealbreakers': not wanting to be happy, letting an addiction ruin both our lives, losing all (ALL) sexual desire for me... and I don't want to expose her to risk of crossing #4: wilful irresponsibility with money. I'm pretty sure we're safe from #5: verbal or physical abuse, but time will tell.)

I'm a green-fields kind of guy. I'm willing to concentrate on what we're working towards, on what life we WANT to have. I can live with all sorts of nonsense as long "It Will All Be Over Soon", if you know what I mean.

So: my question again: how would you feel if your husband told you that he wasn't going to GIVE you his superannuation for life-saving surgery, he was only going to LEND it to you?

I also applied to APRA for the release of $4,280.00 from my super fund and got it approved in 7 working days. Had no issues at all got the 2 letters one from my GP and the another from the surgeon. Have contacted my super fund and they tell me it will be 3-10 days to have the money deposited into my bank account, booked in with Dr Ally at the Essendon Private for the 7th September. Cannot wait.....

Hi,
Apra approved the release of $10,000. Whoo hoo. This should just cover the cost of surgery. It took about 10 days. Surgery booked for the 27th Sept. Can't wait.

I've already whinged that I got stung at tax time this year L. Owe them around $900.

I think you can only get into probs if you have something that's means tested. In my case, it was university debts. I'm appealing and I think I have a good shot.

Will get mum to call them for sure tomorrow, and see if they have the approval from apra. If you have the "sender to keep" bit from an express post envelope can you look on the aus post website to see where it is etc? like can we check to see if its been sent yet via that?

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
They are sending a cheque because they dont do direct deposit apparently :S so we got told to send a express paid envelope with the forms and they will send the cheque back in that. We are going to ring them tomorrow or monday. And ring the surgeon monday and tell them about it and see if we can pay it after the op. But we going to do the pay $16 when deposit cheque and could be cleared the next day so hopefully it all works out good hey!!
We even put on the paperwork that i am booked in for the 25th, it is urgent (the lady on the phone told us to do that) so hope that works when i get mum to ring next i will tell her to tell them that see if it speeds it up abit

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Talusha did you explain this to them? Are they sending a cheque or doing a bank deposit? If its a deposit, call them and tell them when the surgery is.
I had the same problem and a couple of phone calls fast tracked everything for me.

I applied for $6000.I only sent in one I.D.,my passport.I have rang them, was told about Friday or Monday next week to ring to see if it's approved.
Well,I have access to my account with SA Super...i check periodically to see if my extra payments are going in(the office staff where i work can sometimes be incompetent!)
The $6000 has been taken out!!! Yipee!!!!
Still no notification from them tho'...will wait till i get a text from Bank SA to say it's been deposited!!
