Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi all,

Have read the entire thread - thanks everyone for your input! My Dr has refused to write the letter as my BMI is only 34.9. The dr I saw for the blood test analysis said he is more than happy to write a letter.

Im hoping i can chat to my surgeon and aask him to reconsider and writer the letter for me.

Is anyone willing to email me copies of successful letters? It's 3 weeks till surgery date and I know i am cutting it fine time wise so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I am covered by private insurance for the bulk of the surgery but thought I might claim the extra from my super. Does anyone know if they will just pay the difference or do you have to claim the full cost? And on the APRA site it asks for quotes. If you do just claim the difference do you claim before or after the op?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Go to a medical centre with the letter in hand that you want them to write (if you don't know, just copy your surgeon's letter word-for-word). They'll do it. Medical centres just want people back out the door.

If doctors who know you are talking about options like life coaches and medication, there might be a possibility that they don't believe the surgery will work for you.

The band alone doesn't do the job. It helps, but you still have to work with it, not against it. Don't rush into surgery without understanding why you have a weight problem, and whether that problem is one that is amenable to banding as a solution. Surgery will not solve everyone's problems.

Hey Ms 1982
I was lucky enough to get my GPs full support (he is even thinking of getting a band!) but even without it, Mercy Bariatrics (my clinic) were happy to write one or two supporting letters to APRA. They even have a special person in the office who works with people, organises paperwork, etc to get their superannuation out for surgery. Hopefully your Adelaide surgeon will be just as helpful.

Best of luck in your journey!

hi there does not surprise me that the GP wanted to give you medication as my own experience in health care i know for a fact they get healthy incentives to push new products.

good luck

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
I live in Adelaide. I have made an appointment to see the surgeon and i am attending an information session in Adelaide tomorrow night. Hopefully i will get the letter from the surgeon and will take it to my GP and hope he will do the same letter. If not I am going to try APRA without my GP's referral.

If this doesnt work i will just take out a loan i guess. I figure the costs of not buying or eating as much food will even itself out with the loan repayments so i might not be too bad off in the end.

I find it strange that my GP was oh so willing to supply me with drugs (Reducil which i was on for 2 months and actually put on weight) but considers it unethical to write me a letter for the very reason he put me on the drugs in the first place...

hi there

I would doctor hunt do you live in brisbane i can give you my docs name he is fantastic otherwise i would keep seeing docs until one of them did a letter. I know some docs are a bit gun shy of people with BMIs 25-30 not sure where you fit in . otherwise i would see the surgeon adn get him to put the pressure on the gp. My fund actually paid without the GP letter just on the surgoens letter

Ms1982,

Even with a loan, you are probably going to need a GP referal to see the surgeon.

gee 1982, just print this out and show it to your gp and then see what they say about your "attitude problem"?
www.georgefielding.com.au /pubs/you_rule.htm.
It shows VERY clearly that it has nothing to do with your attitude! And if you need a supportive gp i have one here in brisbane if you're near by OR just go until you find one where you are. They're out there.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Yep did that, went to another GP who i'd seen before. She wants me to see a life coach rather than have the surgery done as she believes its my mental attitude towards food rather than my body making me fat. I am getting very frustrated with both these doctors.

The first GP i saw told me to get a letter from the surgeon to see what they say, i still doubt that he will write me the letter though...

Im thinking i might just bypass all this trouble and take out a loan...

Hi m s 1 9 8 2,

Find another Dr and show him/her the apra form. If you like, I can forward a copy of what my GP and surgeon wrote. My GP asked me to get one from the surgeon and show her what he had written so she could copy it. Best of luck, Wendy.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
love the deal breakers....I broke all four of them.....and can now say i am happily not married anymore....if you have deal breakers....and I am sure my ex had them....maybe you need to be on your own as life is not about deal breakers...its about loving that person and supporting them in all times....its not about reprimanding them saying you are naughty you did this you did that.....
my ex had brain surgery ....this is true I supported him worked while he was not getting paid ect and in the end it came down to the deal breakers and the "rules" I had broken......I have just had the best six months of my life...on my own and away from a judgemental, controlling, rule making husband.....my answer just give her the money and say its a gift....forget about the deal breakers and just live your life.

Brent,
I would not be upset. In a perfect world we would all stay happily married, but in a perfect world noone would need lap band surgery either!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi Donna,

You need to apply to APRA for the early release of your super. You will need two letters, one from your GP and one from the specialist to state that your obesity is a cronic illness. Once you have these letters and written quotes, you send them off to apra. If they approve the early release, you forward the confirmation letter from them to your super fund. Even though APRA has approved it your super company can still say no.

It's up to you what you ask for. You can ask for the 12k. Just remember though, you have to pay tax on it. For example I asked for 14k gross and I got $10,700 net.

Goodluck, Wendy

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Do you apply to APRA or your Super fund?

Also, if your quote is $12,000 and you have insurance cover for $8,000 do they only pay the difference or do they give you the whole $12,000 upfront?

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
At first when I read Brett's message I was affronted, but really he makes a good point. Not half an hour ago I asked my husband if he would access his super if I couldn't get mine out for the LBS and he straight away said yes. But what if we did (god forbid) split up...he would then have financial hardship that was entirely "my fault". Maybe it's better to consider the money a kind of "loan" and I can make the commitment to my hubby to put more into my super once I am well to make up the amount I "borrowed" from our retirement fund.

Interesting. Maybe different for us because we both work, no kids, and I have only been well enough to work part time for most of the marriage - he has supported me no questions asked. I think ours is a partnership?!
