My husband super withdrawl got approved today by APRA, so excited, just waiting now for his super company to approve it. If all goes ahead my op will be 11 February 2008.

Good news - went back to my original GP armed with the letter to APRA from the Surgeons Office and was pleased to see they'd also sent him one explaining my reasons for the band etc and he has finally written a letter of referral for me.

Fingers crossed after all that they actually accept it!!

Thanks for your warning. I actually had a wonderful chap from QSuper phone me last night and he advised me very clearly of my options and this included mentioning that I should ensure I request the NET amount I need as the total amount would be taxed.

I actually turn 55 on 30 December and would have access to my accumulated benefits on that date tax free but my surgery is on 19 December in Brisbane. I am thinking of talking to my Credit Union who have been wonderful and getting a short term loan to pay the out of pocket expenses and then pay them back when I can access the QSuper without going through the Compassionate request trip.

But if thats not possible I'll wear the loss of all that tax because it will be worth it to have the surgery. I am soooo committed to having it done before Christmas as I believe it would have been too easy to have used Christmas as a 'last pig out' or something but figure that if I really want to do this, and it is a lifetime commitment, that I should be ready to do it at the most difficult time.

May be this is some weird psychology to ensure myself that this is the right thing but I don't think so. Anyway, I am counting the sleeps until 19 December and a future that brings a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Beware, I did not take into account that I would be taxed on the money withdrawn from my fund ended up having to withdraw more than 17 grand hope it will be money well spent, good luck, Michelle

I would appreciate a copy of your letter by email - even brief details of what supported the request would help as I mentioned, I will be talking to my GP in Brisbane by phone as I can't get home before my appointments in Brisbane in December. I am classified as morbidly obese and have no way of payint out of pocket expenses without accessing my Super. Email bandeze@yahoo.com.au

Just get a letter from a GP at one of those 24 hour medical centres. Ask for your surgeon's letter and get the GP to copy that. They will be more willing to do it if they have a letter to copy. It's not worth posting my letter as I'm morbidly obese and you are not so it won't be appropriate.
