Hi All

Well just an update on my super release. APRA have approved the release of my super and they required another letter from my GP to state LIFE THREATENING so they told me it would be another 10 days from when they received it to be processed again. But my luck may have changed because I rang them a few days later after I Fax Dr letter and they had processed and approved the release...What a relief so I asked them to fax a straight to Super fund to save time then I had already gathered info and filled in super fund requirements provided them with my banking details to save time waiting to process cheques etc.So all being well I should have money in my a/c mid nex week.
My original application to APRA was received by them 30th October, and should have money by 2-3rd Dec, Fingers crossed. So that is only about 5 weeks all up. Pretty good really considering I had to get the other letter from my GP ( who wouldn't put LIFE THREATENING on a letter for me even though they sayif you dont lose weight it will kill you.. go figure) so after a very long stressful day I eded going back to a GP who had seen me several times a year or so ago and he was happy to write the words on a letter for me) I could have kissed him.....

I have just received my money from my super fund today. Exactly 1 week before surgery. The whole process took 7 weeks. I had to get additional information from my private health fund for APRA and at one stage I didn't think it was going to happen. I sent my approval letter via registered mail to my super fund and the money was deposited a week after they received the letter (Wed to Wed).

I had a few issues with providing the additional information to APRA and had no luck when I phoned APRA to ask for help..the girl that answered the phone was obviously having a bad day!!! I ended up phoning back and getting a different person and they gave me some good advice. I noted their name, the time and date of the call on the fax header when I sent the information off. Not sure if this helped or not.

Hope this helps someone!

Well As I suspected, APRA rang a little while ago and said my GP letter wasn't worded correctly so at the moment it is another 9 days before they process once I get the new letter into them. THe result of all this is I have to put back my op date for 2 weeks, which may not be such a bad thing as it will take me into my holidays without having to come back to work a bit sore and sorry.
So I was really expecting after all the stories I have read on here. That's the prob with not being rich I guess.

Hi
Yes that's what concerns me I feel they won't accept my GP letter as he felt it wasn't really life threatening and I said to him "well it WILL kill me if I don't lose weight won't it?" he agreed but still only put "could lead to life threatening"

He said that should be enough anyway as he has done a couple of other letters for that reason and they haven't told him they were unsuccessful because of his wording.... I just have this feeling everything else is going too smooth and quick (not my usual obstacle way) so this is bound to be the stumbling block. That's why I am not getting excited as yet...

Thanks Pat

Hi Pat,
My money just came through two days ago. I applied to APRA on September 8, and they sent me a letter asking for more information about two weeks later. It took me a few days to get the information - EXACT out of pocket costs for me, and an ammended letter from my GP that stated EXACTLY 'life threatening condition', she had originally worded her letter as 'at risk of a life threatening condition' and they wouldn't accept that.

Anyway, it took a further 2-3 weeks after that to get my letter of approval from them, and then another couple of days to get a copy of my bank account statement (to confirm BSB & account number), get a certified copy of my drivers licence, and a photocopy of the letter from APRA (you need to post the original).

I posted all of that plus the completed form from my super fund (that I downloaded from the internet), and posted that on October 31st, which was a Saturday. I used registered mail, more because they had the original of the APRA letter than anything.

The entire process took nine weeks.

Hopefully yours will be quicker, but I somehow doubt it.

Word of warning though. I know of someone who borrowed money to get their surgery done because the process was taking so long, and APRA then declined their application saying that they had been able to access the money elsewhere.

Good luck, but expect to have to postpone your surgery I'm afraid.

Hi all,
I am currently awaiting approval from APRA to granting release of my super for my banding which is booked for 1st Dec. I rang them through the week and was told that their estimated 10 day processing time meant they didn't pickup application for review until that time or longer depending on backlog. Currently running at 11 days. So why do they call it PROCESSING TIME I ask?
Anyway if they need something else from me and I go to bottom of list again then I will have to put my surgery date back a bit cause there won't be enough time to get money for op otherwise.

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
hi missbelinda, I just read the post you wrote over 12 months ago and was keen to find out how you went with accessing your super. I am about to apply but am very worried I wont be approved as my weight issues may not be deemed life threatening. I have osteoarthritus in both knees and have diabetes very prevalent in my family. Would love to hear how it all went for you,
cheers, Georgia

hi ness12u,
just wondering how you got on with your super fund? I am about to apply so am keen to find out exactly what is required. I have a bmi of 35 and I have osteoarthritus in both knees. I hope this enough to get the letters to say "life threatening" but not too sure. Hope all is going as planned for you, Georgia

Has anyone been rejected by APRA and been successful in reapplying? I am still to find out why they rejected my application as I supplied all the letters, bank statements, loan statements etc. I'm a week away from the start of my procedures (have an endoscopy on 24th) and don't have the $4000 I requested from my super. The endoscopy will cost me $400 so I don't want to go through with that if I can't have the surgery a few weeks later. I clearly showed I do not have $4000 to my name and owe more than I earn! Thanks banders, who knows why they make this journey so much harder for us!

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Hi all

My application took ages to be approved as my letter from my doctor did not say life threatening illness. I didn't receive my approval until after surgery but spoke to them and said that I didn't want to change the date. I put it on my credit card (I had to get an increase in my limit) and wrote them a letter saying that I was going to go ahead with the surgery and that it was going on my credit card as I did not have the money to pay for it and if my application was rejected it would put me in financial hardship as I would have to pay interest ..... I had to send through a copy of the letter from the bank about the increase in the credit card and then a copy of my bank statement and it was all fine.

Please be warned for those applying through APRA. Don't be tempted to pay for your surgery before APRA has approved because if you do they might say that you can afford to pay and not release your super funds. This happened to me and I was knocked back by APRA. I went ahead with my surgery at the scheduled date as my husband could be around` at that time so I didn't want to put the surgery off.

I had the exact same type of quote, which is what I sent in. I have only just got my letter back to say that they hope to process in 10 working days so hoping that was all they needed. I was told by someone somewhere along the line that that was all they require. Fingers crossed for a successful response

Re:Payment through superannuation fund? Reply to this message
Just a quick question regarding the surgeons quote.
I have my letter from specialist and gp but have read you also need to send in a quote. I have a general surgical quotation that is given to each prospective patient. Will this be enough to send in or does it need to be addressed to me and more specific?
Thanks
Sam
