hi missbelinda, I just read the post you wrote over 12 months ago and was keen to find out how you went with accessing your super. I am about to apply but am very worried I wont be approved as my weight issues may not be deemed life threatening. I have osteoarthritus in both knees and have diabetes very prevalent in my family. Would love to hear how it all went for you,
cheers, Georgia |

hi ness12u,
just wondering how you got on with your super fund? I am about to apply so am keen to find out exactly what is required. I have a bmi of 35 and I have osteoarthritus in both knees. I hope this enough to get the letters to say "life threatening" but not too sure. Hope all is going as planned for you, Georgia |

| Has anyone been rejected by APRA and been successful in reapplying? I am still to find out why they rejected my application as I supplied all the letters, bank statements, loan statements etc. I'm a week away from the start of my procedures (have an endoscopy on 24th) and don't have the $4000 I requested from my super. The endoscopy will cost me $400 so I don't want to go through with that if I can't have the surgery a few weeks later. I clearly showed I do not have $4000 to my name and owe more than I earn! Thanks banders, who knows why they make this journey so much harder for us! |

Hi all
My application took ages to be approved as my letter from my doctor did not say life threatening illness. I didn't receive my approval until after surgery but spoke to them and said that I didn't want to change the date. I put it on my credit card (I had to get an increase in my limit) and wrote them a letter saying that I was going to go ahead with the surgery and that it was going on my credit card as I did not have the money to pay for it and if my application was rejected it would put me in financial hardship as I would have to pay interest ..... I had to send through a copy of the letter from the bank about the increase in the credit card and then a copy of my bank statement and it was all fine. |

Please be warned for those applying through APRA. Don't be tempted to pay for your surgery before APRA has approved because if you do they might say that you can afford to pay and not release your super funds. This happened to me and I was knocked back by APRA. I went ahead with my surgery at the scheduled date as my husband could be around` at that time so I didn't want to put the surgery off.

| I sent in that kind of quote and was approved with no requests for extra or rewritten documentation. I applied on 3rd June, was approved on 17th june and my letter arrived today. |

| I had the exact same type of quote, which is what I sent in. I have only just got my letter back to say that they hope to process in 10 working days so hoping that was all they needed. I was told by someone somewhere along the line that that was all they require. Fingers crossed for a successful response |

Just a quick question regarding the surgeons quote.
I have my letter from specialist and gp but have read you also need to send in a quote. I have a general surgical quotation that is given to each prospective patient. Will this be enough to send in or does it need to be addressed to me and more specific?
Thanks
Sam |

| Hope your right re waiting times. I was told 4 to 6 weeks is a quick turnaround by my clinic. But hey if you have been told different by APRA thats great. Fingers crossed. I sent mine off 14 June and am booked for surgery late July. Keep me posted on how you go with your response. |

| Goodness, I truly hope the wait isn't six weeks!! I was told both on the phone and in a letter from APRA that the wait time is 10 business days. I applied on 3rd June and my surgery is scheduled for 8th July, I really hope it is processed by then, or I will have trouble stumping up the cash. |

Hi rayls
You need to have 2 letters from doctors stating that you have a life threatening illness. The obesity is the illness so back pain etc does not need to be added. The letter also must state that it is not raadily available in the public health system. I got my letters from the GP and the surgeon. You also have to send a quote of costs. APRA is the government body that controls our super. They must approve the release of funds before your superannuation will release any funds. Google APRA to download application form. Approval time is estimated to be about 6 weeks. I just sent my form off so hoping thats the case The rate of tax is approx 21% I think. |

Hi all,
I have been reading your messages about getting super to pay for the surgery. I am to have lapband in August and I would like to know can anyone explain it to me how I apply to use my super to pay. I have private health insurance and I will still have to pay $4000 out of my pocket to have the op. I understand you have to get a letter from your GP, does the letter have to say that you have a life threating illness or can it be related to cronic back pain, depression etc. Do I only need one letter from my GP as I have read else where you need Two GPs and one Specialist letter. Who is APRA? Last question if you get access to the super how much tax do you pay for getting early?
looking forward to hearing from anyone

Mels - I also had to get funding through APRA -I have to say that I did send all that they wanted first up - my delay was cause of the Vic bushfires and so many people asking to access their super - so i was disappointed but was prepared to wait - but - good news - when you get the funding - it is almost immediate and my surgery was not as much in the end as i asked for and I got money back from Medicare and they do not want this back ot to know about it - they said - its my money and i probably need to recoup... so hang in there - once they say YES - it is almost immediate.
Cheers Patti |

| Just a word of warning ladies - APRA seem to be getting tougher and tougher. I finally got word that APRA have approved my application this week. My application was firstly received by them on the 8th of September, 2008. However, on three occassions I was asked to get the wording changed and on the last occassion I had to supply them with a Stat Dec. Each time they ask for something - your application gets put back to the bottom of the pile. So make sure you get it right the first time. I faxed the APRA letter to my super fund (PSS) this week and last night I received a letter and documentation from them asking for more documentation to be completed. The saga continues, however, I am getting there - there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck with it all! Love, P1xie xo |

Update
Was scheduled for surgery on 2nd April but due to the slow release of funds from my super company, at the last minute I had to re-schedule to the next day to wait for the funds to clear. What a stress it was but all worked out in the end. What I hadn't counted on was the large amount of tax they took out. Anyways 2 weeks banded and very happy now. Good luck to those still going through the process. |
