Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
My email is zo_mo_zo@hotmail.com - are you going to the meet and greet on Sunday Natti? Would be great to catch up, but if you are just out, it may be a bit too soon.

I had my appointment with Dr. Hopkins today - what they say is true, he is supercalifreakinawesome!

I am so excited, my surgery is on 1 June 2009 if I go intermediate at RWBH or they said if I choose private I can get in a matter of weeks to Holy Spirit (I can ring them at anytime to change from intermediate to private, they are wonderful and super flexible and did I say they were all friendly?), I am seriously considering going private but is a couple more grand, I know you can't put a price on your health but far out so much more expense, but frankly I just don't want to wait six months...

So I will talk to all on Sunday at Milton and see what the G-O is... I willmake up my mind after that...
What is everyone else's experience in waiting is, did anyone else have to wait six months?

I even said to Dr. Hopkins that he was a popular man on forums and he laughed and said he has read them in the past - funny stuff!

Oh and he also said that he would give me at least a 6 -7ml fill straight up because I am a smaller patient(my BMI is 37) and he would do a fill as soon as 3 weeks after.. Happy about that... What is everyone else's experience with first fills?

Once again I will shush but yep, definately excited.

Oh and has anyone bought anything online from www.bariatriceating.com? It is recommended heaps on youtube and there seems like some really good mixers for protein etc. Would anyone recommend any certain protein mixes/drinks? I know I have to go on sure slim 2weeks before and four or so weeks after) but possibly want to know a larger range of protein for ongoing use after the surgery

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Thanks for the advice and thank you also for being so welcolming, I think i am gonna like being part of this post! So maybe I will come to the Milton gathering as I don;t think anything is as good as real life advice.

Does anyone on this post go on you tube? There is some seriously inspirational stuff on there.

I think Milton would be good for me as I really want to ask people about their new food experiences and how it has changed their life.

About my surgery, I am going through Dr. Hopkins as an intermediate patient so will go on his once a month list (that is why i am not sure what month I will fit into. I will know more once I have my appt on the 13th). After the 13500, there are still more fees I have to pay but I was expecting this - like any health condition (as well as fees for fills etc). I am not too worried about forking out these smaller costs. But yes, when the cost of the band itself being $3000 - 4000

I really like that Dr. Hopkins sent out the dvd so I feel like I have already met him.

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
No the entire amount doesn't go to the surgeon but the surgeon's costs are over the top for the time and complexity of the lapband operation. Between $3,000 and $6,000+ are the current costs in Brisbane for the surgeon's fee alone and only the scheduled fee is what you get back even if you have private health. That is highway robbery and no amount of fiddling with numbers, apportioning bits here and there and saying you'll benefit in the long-term by saving on future medical bills and the general cost of living justifies it IMHO. It could be said that all surgery benefits on future medical bills or at least it should.

The same surgeon that puts your lapband in also can remove your gall bladder and perform reflux surgery also laparoscopically for a fraction of the cost. The bottom line is they have a captive market and they know it. If we want the band we have to fork out these exhorbitant fees as they know we can't put the band in ourselves! But I don't like being ripped off.

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Hi Zoe
I got so much out of the Milton get together that I would suggest that you go even if it will be a while before you are banded. I will be banded at the Sunshine Coast Private on the 2nd Feb. but went to the luncheon back in November and it was wonderful to chat to others that have been banded for a long time, short time, weeks and some not yet. I found I got so much information to add to my list and all very positive.

The fees do vary a lot. If you have medical cover the hospital theatre and the band (this is very expensive) is covered.

That leaves the doctor his assistant the anesthetist and his assistant. Some have dietitian, physio, psychologist added into the account others you pay them separate.

If you do not have cover and are going private you have to pay for the hospital bed, theater room and the band so when you take all this into account you can see where the money goes.

It does not all go to the one doctor.

If you do not have cover and are lucky to be done at a Public hospital as an intermediate patient with your doctor you will save a lot I have a feeling that you are either going Public or Intermediate at the RBWH?

You could still have some small chargers for pharmacy and incidentals.

Ultimately, the surgery should also save you money. Your future medical bills and general cost of living will be reduced. This long term positive effect can balance out the short term costs relatively quickly.

You can get more help with dietitian (5 visits) and psychologist (12 visits) plans. Ask your doctor about these plans.

I have my appointment with Dr Greenslade in the morning and I am so excited I could burst! My only worry now is
Apra I will fax off the paper work when I get home tomorrow. Does anyone know how long it takes to get an answer and there is a space on the form where you can write more info about our family sistuation is that a good thing to do or not? if it is what should we write? I have to admit looking at our finances on paper there is no way they can say we can afford to pay ourselves!

Hey Zoe,

I went to my first meeting and I had months and months to go before my op. Its a good chance to see people and get any questions answered in real life. Also, you'll be amazed how much it will help your resolve, when you see people who have lost weight on it.

Zoe

It doesn't matter how you look at it banding is a rip-off. These surgeons are making bucketloads of money out of us just like everyone else has done along the way of our weightloss journies. Diet companies, diet pills etc etc they all make us pay dearly for our sins. I personally find it really disappointing that the vast marjority of lapband surgeons have upped their fees for banding in comparison to other procedures they perform. I don't know about other States but that seems to be the case here in Brisbane. I guess once we're banded there's no more money to make out of us so they hit us hard!

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Hi my name is Zoe and I am in Sandgate. I have my first appt with the famous DR. Hopkins on the 13th and hopefully will get my Lap Band surgery in either April/May at RBWH. I am really interested in meeting ppl who are going through the same thing as me and who are around my age - I am 25.
Happy to go to coffee in Milton but think me joining the group on the 18/01 is a little premature as I won't be getting my surgery for a little while as I am going through public system and may have to wait a little bit. What I did want to post was how crazy the difference in price for Lap Band surgery is... I have had quite a few of appts at different places around Brisbane (Iwanted to research and know doctors etc) and the price goes from 17500+ and as little as 7500+, frills and no frills. I am all for doctors and orgs making profits but geez, the system needs serious regulation. When I asked the particular org about how costly they , and I asked if they could do an exact breakdown of costs - it was guesses only (nothing formal on paper) and they made me feel rude for asking, needless to say I am not going with the more expensive place. Dr Hopkins was in the middle so I am happy about that and they have help onsite. If I wasn't working as hard as I am I would probably spend some more time sourcing my own specialists but cannot be away from work for that long and because I am young - i don't know if other ppl get this, my boss is less forgiving for me seeking help for my health as apposed to the older other ladies in my office. - This is my experience anyway.

Anyway I will shush and hope to post again and look forward to getting in and reading ppls threads.

This is my first post and it makes me more excited about changing my life with the band.

Cheers,

Zoe
