Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Kym,
I am chasing you around the board tonight!! i have 8.5 in a 10ml band. Everyone is different.
My suggestion to you is to get .5 put in, then make an appointment for a fill a week later if your doctor will allow it. Point out that you are not all that happy with your progress and would like to have the feeling of restriction.
My dad was banded in Jan this year and he had 5 fills in 2 weeks in about April I think it was. His restriction is great.
I have been banded for 3 years, been at goal for 2 years. I had good restriction but still wanted more and had .5 ml putin once and it was an overfill, went back and had the .5 taken out and felt like I had no restriction, even though I was back to where I was! It then took 3 more fills in one week to get me to where I was comfortable..... which wait for it, was 1ml more!!! Now figure that one out!! My Dr expplained to me that whenthe band is over filled and the fill is removed the band stretches ever so slightly, not much, but it can be enough to offset things a bit.
Weird hey!!
D

7.9ml in a 10ml band?
I am amazed that you can get ANYTHING down Tara!

I have 5.5ml now and are going back to get more fill in 2 weeks. He only put in .5ml last time and I will be angry if he only does the same again as 11kg in 7 months is a joke!

Where do you guys buy optifast from?
My surgeon has never told me to drink it even pre-op. Now I have a new surgeon he suggests I drink it for meals at work as food gets stuck as I only have half an hour break for meals and have to get through meals fast.

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Hi Tara,

I was banded urgently (due to health reasons), in September 2008. Initially the weight just dropped off and all were concerned that I was losing too quickly. Then came the plateau, it must be my fault of course! Then as per independent dietitian and diabetic educator I was kickstarted with optifast for two weeks! Success! Weight loss to that point 30kg again plateau! Now I have found I have gained 3kg, it sounds stupid but god I can feel it, my tummy now appears bloated. Sadly I discovered too late that I should have seen a psychologist and continued same, none of this had been mentioned to me previously.

Due to my lifethreatening illness and experiences of last year I have experienced depression and found I have lost alot of the motivation I had in those first 3 to 4 months after surgery. I have been keen to get together with others as at times I have felt lost and alone on this journey. Sadly I do not believe there is room for individuality, one MUST go by the text book and if you don't there is no support. Finally I have just discovered some new material which may be of some assistance, but there is nothing like support from those who have been there done that!
Can you please tell me more about your support group and meetings, do you have a newsleter?
Hoping to get better motivated,
Sharyn

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
THANK YOU so much everyone for your replies!

Thanks also for the recommendations, hopefully I will be able to get an appointment asap with one of these Drs.

I would love to come along to the support group!

I should add that the trauma has not been with the band (fingers crossed that it stays that way) but with the surgeon and the hospital. A long story that I will bore you with when I see you on the 26th :)

Thanks again.

Dr Blair Bowden does bands ,as many others do but ,fills are the only thing you should need

I would suggest cost wise try
Dr Jen Duncombe does fills ,
for Dr Duncombe ,cost with medicare is ...usually.......$10 out of pocket ... for Dr Duncombe
she does several locations

(auchenflower ....33719521....tuesdays

stafford....not sure of the number but auchenflower will give it to you,
and logan ....38060077...monthly... on a thursday next time is 30/7/09

as well as several others area's
(ask stafford when you get their no as its her base ) any other detail s as she travels around ,the state also,)
she is available by mobile phone in an emergency ,(always handy )
Dr Duncombe works with many surgeons doing fills ,

anyone can come to our meetups everyone who comes is always welcoming
Our ,next meetup and dates of future meetups

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Hi Everyone. I am sorry for hijacking your thread, but I would really appreciate some help.

I was banded last August in the United Arab Emirates. The procedure was so traumatic, that I never went back for a fill. I am coming home to Australia in a few days and would like to get in contact with a great surgeon to check if everything is OK with the band and to have my first fill. I really need someone who I can trust and who will be supportive. I will be based near Kenmore.

Also, would it be possible for me to attend one of your support groups? If so could someone send me some details at the email address below.

Thanks for any help. shar.expat at gmail dot com

ptsdau,

Jo always uses capitals - she doesn't mean anything by it.
Keep reading though she has some really good knowledge to share.

Jo, Why do you shout at us. Using capital letters may save you time but it is very discourteous to people.
There is a web site that outlines common mistakes people make when communicating on-line. Shouting being a major switch off for many readers. Can I ask that you not use capital letters shouting at us please. Thanks

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
SORRY KYM
FOR GOT TO MENTION, BREAD AND ROLLS ARE OUT OF THE QUESTION FOR MOST PEOPLE WHO R BANDED, I CANT EAT STEAK, NOT MANY CAN, SOME TIMES DIFFERENT CUTS LIKE EYEFILLET IS BETTER CHOICE, AND WHY NOT COOK HUBBY A STEAK AND SOME THING LIKE RISSOLES FOR YOURSELF, THAT WAY HES HAPPY.

WHEN DINING OUT YES SOMETIMES IT CAN BE A CHALLENGE, TRY CHINESE,GOES DOWN AS IT HAS SAUCES,LASAGNE, PASTA, THIN BASE PIZZA VERY SLOW, MACCAS- WRAPS OR CHICKEN BURGER LESS THE BUN (NUDE BURGER)THE SECRET IS TAKE YOUR TIME TO EAT AND CHEW CHEW CHEW. AND TAKE A CONTAINER WITH U TO TAKE LEFTOVERS HOME WITH U.

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
HI KYM,

LOVEY SOUNDS LIKE YOU DEFINATELY NEED FILL OUT, AS IF U HAVE TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE U MAY NOT LOSE WEIGHT,
SOME OF THE GIRLS FROM BRISBANE BANDSTERS HAVE VERY LITTLE FILL IN AND HAVE GOOD LOSSES, ONE LADY HAD NO FILL UNTIL RECENTLY, HER BAND WAS ENOUGH RESTRICTION FOR HER, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT AND REACT TO DIFFERENT AMTS DIFFERENTLY, THERE IS NO HARD AND FAST RULE WITH A BAND.
PLEASE SEE YOUR SURGEON SOON YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO EAAT SOLIDS LIKE CHICKEN, BY EATING SOFT TYPE FOODS WHICH SLIDE THROUGH, YOU WONT FEEL SATISFIED, AND CAN CAUSE YOU TO CONSUME MORE FOOD AND MORE CALORIES, SOMETHING ELSE TO TRY IS CUT YOUR MEAT SMALL AND CHEW 20-30 TIMES,AND SHOULD TAKE YOU APPROX 20 MINS-30MINS TO EAT A CUP OF FOOD, USE THIS AS A GUIDE TO HELP YOU.
IF YOU R STILL EXPERIENCING TROUBLE PLEASE GO TO YOUR SURGEON AND HAVE SOME FILL TAKEN OUT, EG 1ML TO TRY FIRST AND SEE HOW U GO.

TAKE CARE
JO X
IF YOU STILL HAVE

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Kym,

Why not try calorieking.com.au to help record your food and find out how many calories you are consuming. Personally I LOVE this site !! It really keeps me on track.

And as me211167 said you could see a dietician. I find this also helps alot. I never thought I'd love my dietician but I do.

It would be great if the band was the magic fix all but we really do have to use it as a tool.
And .. 9.5 kilos down is better than where you would be if you didn't have the band!

Good Luck,
TARA

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
Kym I cant eat red meat either but that is just something I am learning to live without. How does vegies and salads go down? I struggle with bread as most people with bands do its the sacrifices we make I guess. Do you see a dietician maybe if you dont you should they maybe able to help you make better food choices.

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
No I wouldn't have any out because I have only lost 9.5kg since I had it put in on January 12th this year.
I don't know why I don't really as I obviously can't lose a single thing and haven't since February and I am depressed enough let alone to put that 9kg on though maybe I should just admit defeat and do it.

Re:Brisbane Bandsters?? Reply to this message
I have 5 mls in my band right now.
I can't get through any breadrolls, soft bread, hot chips (have no idea why), red meat (except mince), sausages, to name a few. It doesn't matter how much I chew them, they just won't go through.
We live on fish, chicken (only if baked or casserole so very soft) and macaronni cheese. My husband loves read meat which I used to also but since I can't eat it, I refuse to cook it for him.
Going out to restaurants is a joke as I can't eat or don't like what they offer. The whole experience has been difficult to say the least.

Kym,

I agree with me211167.
My last 2 fills have made all the difference for me.
I am really happy with the amount of fill I have.
But it certainly has restricted what I can eat, I wouldn't even consider eating bread now.
If ya wanna chat you can e-mail me.
