Hi all,
Just thought i would fill you in..
I called Essendon private this morning, after a shocking night (thought i wasn't going to live through it) The lovely Lyn made me come staright in and see Dr Aly (so very cute...lol) he removed all fill i had as was very concerned about me being dehydrated and said if i can't keep water down for the next 20mins that he would put me on a drip....Yuk..
Anyways all fill gone ...water stayed down...pressure released...and rehydrating nicely...YAY!!
Have to have a barium swallow in about a week once swelling goes down and see if the band may have slipped..Fingers crossed it hasn't and if it has..hopefully it will correct itself and i won't have to go back under the knife.
Tha nks linda & Jane for your support and everyone else for just being there.

Linda: Mary isn't banded yet she was just wondering.
Mary: I forgot to mention in answer to your question - is it something everyone gets - no not everyone, some do some don't. As I said in my previous post I never had it pre-banding but the strange thing is some people who suffered with reflux pre-banding don't get it post-banding. |

Hi Mary,it can be a sign that something is wrong. You need to check with your doctor and he may remove some fill.

Hi Mary
I've had reflux, never did pre-banding, it's no big deal though, I was put on Somac to treat and prevent it. One of the things Somac does is treats reflux.
I've had my band repositioned as a result of slippage and I don't get reflux anymore but I went back on Somac when I was prescribed several NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to treat arthritis and the Somac helps to prevent the NSAIDs causing ulcers. |

Thanks Jane
The inhaling did concern me...My daughter (who is studying at the School of natural Medicines) just said something very similar and i will also be asking my surgeon about it.
I have been reading a few comments from others when they have had the same symptoms and i will be taking a big list to the Doctors and not taking "You'll be fine" for an answer. It has realy given me a bit of a scare as up until now i have realy been the perfect Bandit.
Thanks again for your reply

Hi Tania - I saw your post on another thread ... the part that concerns me most of all is the chance of you getting aspiration pneumonia - when you inhale some of the reflux - this can be life threatening - I know someone who got this and had about 6 weeks in ICU and came home on a walking frame (she is OK now). You must get something done about it... Pariet has helped me, plus have had quite a bit of fill out over the weeks - (and have put on 2kg aaargh!)
All the best

have not been able to keep anything down for the last 4 days or so...not even coffee or barrocca.
Also having quite a bit of reflux/bile and thought my band was going to choke me in my sleep last night.
Keep feeling like i need to burp, but not able to without bringing up whatever liquid i have drank.(usualy curdled when it comes back up)
Havn't had any fills since mid last year, so i know it's not an overfill. Am wondering if it might be slippage..lots of gurgling noises and pains when i drink.
Have made an appointment to see Dr Monk , but can't get in until Thursday...should i be worried
Thanks for any help

| Hello! I am totally new to these boards. I came across your question and that is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I went to get a fill today, informed them of my severe indigestion for the past year or more, they did a barrium swallow and said I have a slipped band and I need to have it removed and replaced within the next couple weeks. They took out all my fluid, I am wanting to know if it is possible for it to repair itself instead of going through surgery again. This is not the same MD who placed my band, that is why I am wondering. Does anyone else know anything about removal and replacement? |

| This is a very interesting thread. I remember reading in the info pamphlet my surgeon gave me how because the procedure is really only around 10 years old they don't have a great deal of information on the long term effects of the band etc etc. It seems like reflux affects a LOT of people who have been banded more than a couple of years :( That said, I'm steaming ahead to get my band done (lol). Mint flavoured gear at the ready! |

Hi Freddy and CONGRATULATIONS! Not so good about the reflux and having to have the band redone but hopefully these hiccoughs can be fixed soon. I don't know what to advise you about having to wait until December....is there no way around it as it is for a correction? Perhaps any Superannuation could be used?
Congratulations again, I know exactly what you mean about feeling for the first time since your teens that you are you....I feel exactly the same.
I hope it all gets sorted out for you soon so you can continue to enjoy your new life to the fullest!

I was banded 18 months ago and have been doing brilliantly with the weight loss - over 60kgs to date. I also have terrible reflux problems despite having had all of the liquid removed from the band. I know the cause of my problems is that despite doing so well - I have still been overeating and my upper pouch is a lot bigger than it should be. Hence it is not working properly and I'm having problems keeping solid food down - sometimes even having problems keeping liquid down which can lead to feeling dehydrated, especially when it's hot or I'm on my period.
My current dilema is that I'm paying into an insurance fund and know that I will need to have my band op re-done. The insurance will not pay for this until December but I don't think I can wait that long. I'm able to eat so little sometimes that I lose around 2 - 3kgs a week. I only want to lose around another 5kgs and so can't keep going at this rate. I'm going to call my hospital and try and arrange to get in and discuss my worries.
I take Somax for the reflux and I also find that a higher pillow helps at night. But I don't think I should continue to put up with the acid and the felling of lethargy. It's not right.
I love being slim and I'm a different person to the me of 18 months ago. Now I don't even hesitate when something involves physical effort. I don't exercise regularly as such but I walk the dogs, swim occasionally and have an active life. I'm 34 and for the first time since early teens the lap band has made me feel like me again. I feel like I have got so much out there to try and experience!
Yes I have some excess skin but can still wear bathers and I invest in good underwear! Definately no regrets, I love me a lot more than I ever have and only now do I understand how I used to abuse myself with food. This is my first post...... regards Freddy X |

| I am going on my 5th year with my band, and I to have severe reflux problems. I only have a half cc of fluid in my band and still am awakened every night with reflux problems. I am to the point that I want the band out because it is only getting worse. I take Nexium (also have tried others) and keep Tums by the bed. I even elevated the head of my bed, but it is still not helping. |

G'Day Wudstck954
I know how you that feels, my banding was four years ago and I still have those problems. However, two things that work for me, an antacid (Quickeze) before bed, and a high pillow. The Quickeze is short term, but I have found that a higher (thicker) pillow keeps my head up, and I think this keeps the reflux down. I also find that not eating anything for 3 or 4 hours before I go to bed helps, drinking is OK but nothing solid. It seems to me that we each respond differently to the band, and it seems to be a case of trying everything until you find something that works.

Hi,
I know somebody that has a lap band and suffered from reflux at night. One symptom of the band being too tight is coughing at night and reflux. I suggst that you get back to your surgeon ASAp and get reviewed.

I had my band done approx 6 years ago since being banded I have had a problem with reflux It happens when I lay down at night, my most severe attacks had me vommiting in my sleep I have been taking zantac for it but i have times when it doesnt work.....mints help with the taste and being sick ( i know thats not good but getting the acid out has been the only way I know to stop getting it).
Also being sick after eating , my surgeon has taken all liquid out of the band but im still doing it.... mostly when i eat solids I can eat mushed up foods or soup ( ice cream and chocolate go down good to * trys to hide*)
Also if you are considering falling pregnant or are make sure your doc knows you have had your stomach lap banded, even after explaining to my doc that I had he didnt know how restricted you are haveing a lap band... I also had 2 miscarriages the first at 16 weeks I saw the baby they said it wasnt getting enough from me, the second ended at 6 weeks but happily enough I had Joel 2 months ago he was rather small 5'11 but hes beautiful.
But good luck with the band I know there is a operation you can have to help with reflux maybe ask your doctor about it. |

Hi all, I suffer from acid reflux also. I saw my surgeon and he prescribed Pariet and since then the reflux has all but disappeared. I used to wake in the night choking and my throat and chest would be burning.

I had a similar problem for eighteen months and was continually complaining to my surgeon. In that time I had eight Barium Meals that showed my band was working "perfectly". Last November I got jack of it so I requested an endoscopy which showed up nothing, I told the Gastroenterologist that did the endoscopy that I was going to ask my surgeon to refer me to a CAT scan. He replied that he doubted anything would show up in the CAT scan. I ignored his comment and went ahead with the CAT scan and it showed that I had a band slippage that had cause a Hiatus Hernia. I have had both repaired now. Apparently slippages and hernia's are very difficult to detect on x-rays hence why nothing showed up on the eight Barium Meals. Some days the band or hernia can be in clear view and other days they can be hiding so the days I was having the x-rays done they were obviously hiding. If I had taken the gastroenterologist's advice I would still be walking around with a hiatus hernia, slipped band and reflux. Don't take no for an answer and request every test possible to get to the answer of your problem.

| I don't know of any remedies, but I have been banded for a little over a year now and have just started having the same problems. I even wake up at night chocking on the acid. I am miserable so if you hear of anything that works, please please let me know. Thanks, wudstck954 |
