Felice thank you so much for your encouragement. :) I guess this really is going to be a journey about change for me. I have to get my head around the fact that it is a marathon not a sprint lol. I am so all or nothing it is hard to step back and learn balance.

Hey Cinni,

Congrats on taking the first step :-) Antidepressants take up to 6 weeks to reach therapeutic levels in the blood. Normally you are prescribed an increasing dose regimen so that you slowly increase your medication and minimize the side effects you may experience. If you are prescribed this DO NOT think that by increasing your dose quicker that you will feel better faster - IT WILL NOT WORK. You will just feel more drowsy and get more side effects. You can not speed up the process :-)

Remember that Antidepressants are like insulin injections. They are simply replacing a chemical in your body that your body isnt producing enough off. You cant get high from them and they cant change your personality etc. You dont need to be scared of them.

I am thrilled to see that your doctor is holistic in his approach :-) Medication can help the chemical inbalance but all other issues need the assistance of a psychologist. And Im so glad you will have little out of pocket expenses. It sounds like your Doc knows what hes doing :-)

Keep your chin up and soon you will have the band and the hard work will really start!!!

Love Felice

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Well I finally saw my doctor and the physician I saw for my pre-op appointment had sent him a note saying he felt I should defer banding till I have the depression under control. Bugger ...I didn't think it was out of control! I guess I scored worse on the little test he gave me than I thought. That is what you get for being honest. This is the letter he is also sending my surgeon ...sigh. The doctor wrote me a prescription and gave me a referral to a psychologist though which will mostly be covered by medicare. Maybe it won't be so bad. I am not keen on the medication though but I guess if I am going to get the band I better do as I am told. On the positive side the letter said it would be ok for me to go on the waiting list while being treated.

I wonder how long medication takes to work? Maybe it will help and it won't hold me back for long.

Hey Cinni

To add onto Felices suggestion...I was having a lot of mental health problems when I was down in Bunbury and I was seeing psycologists/councellors (sp?!) at Bunbury mental health near the hospital there and I never paid anything.
Perhaps you could ring them to ask about their services and find out how to get referred?

Hey Cinni :-)

I dont know if you know this BUT if your GP places you under a 'mental health care plan' you are able to receive free/discounted counselling/psychology under medicare :-) I image from the little I know of you that you would fit the criteria for this :-)Psych is soooo important and its our right to use this service :-)

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Thanks Unzippin and Felice. I am ditching the dur o mi ne, it really is awful stuff.

I am going public so there is no psychologist. The Dr I saw has asked me to see my doctor about this.

He said he wanted me to have this sorted before I have the lap band and no wonder if there is such thing as the blues after. I will talk to my doctor next week and take his advice, I don't want to feel like this and I certainly don't want it to stop me from getting a band (which I do think would help with my current blues).

Nicely said Trish :-)My team included psychology assessment and follow up as well. I was able to use my own psychologist for the follow up though :-)

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Cinni...some surgeons include a psychologist in their band package. Mine is one of those and part and I had to see him along with a dietician. Obesity is linked to depression which comes first varies from person to person but it has been found that by treating the depression the obesity quickly comes into line.

My doctor feels that by offering a phsyc before and during lap band treatment that issues that may arise during the course can be dealt with and sliding backwards in the weightloss is stopped.

I think you will find this is what you doc is saying, not that you should be medicated but rather to get some good counceling and keep it going.

We are encouraged to go back and see our psyc at anytime we become dispondant so we dont sabotage our band...perhaps you can look into this and show him you have a councellor in place which will then satisfy this requirement.

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Cinni,

Please remember that Dur omine is an amphetamine and has the potential to exacerbate depression. I am sure your doctor has gone through the side effects with you :-)

Following banding it is very common to experience "bandit blues" - there are a few threads about this. Perhaps your Doctor is concerned that if your mental health isnt appropriately managed prior to surgery you will become increasingly unwell because of this.

If you are seriously diagnosed with depression than perhaps speak to your psychiatrist about both of the above issues. It is very important to keep all your support teams involved :-)

Goodluck! The outcome is worth all the preparation and it is definitely do-able!

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Well I had my physicians appointment last night and he was really great I liked him. Shame I can't just see him instead of the dietician. He did worry me a bit though he asked about my health and when I said I had depression he wanted me to be treated for that before the lap band which I hope doesn't mean he won't recommend me for surgery? Only just thoiught of this this morning! Eek. I will have to wait and see until I see my surgeon again. It is the surgeons decision though isn't it? I wouldn't have thought depression was a contraindication. I am treating it naturally but he meant with drugs!
I would have thought a bit of depression was fairly normal for someone struggling with their weight and figured the lap band would help it but he said that having the lap band can be really tough on you. I guess I will have to think about this a bit more.

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Well I don't know whats going on with me. Ever since my appointment with the surgeon I have been eating everything bad in my path. I am not even getting surgery for 6-9 months at this rate I will need three lapbands!

I do have a prescription for du ro mine (apparently this is a swaer word) which I was not going to use as it keeps me up at night and makes me cranky but I am thinking it might be the way to go.

I wonder if I can take du ro mine while on the opti stage so I can stick to it easier?

Hi cinni

Still couldn't get the link to work but don't worry I know what the SAGB looks like considering I've got one inside of me. I've had heaps of complications with it, I was even going to have it removed and have the sleeve done but decided against that because I have some chronic illnesses and I feel my body it too weak to cope with further weight loss surgery. However that's not to say the SAGB is no good, I know heaps of people with SAGBs that have had a dream run to goal weight I'm just one of the unlucky few that all brand bands have. I still love my band and highly recommend banding to anyone.

M2lose Dr W does do the sleeve. He asked if I had private cover because it's not covered if you are a public patient. I am public so the band is my only option.

Yahoo seems to add in a "%20" instead of a space in some urls, so that is what needs to be removed.

Cinni, someone asked me the other day if Dr W does the vertical sleeve gastrectomy at Bunbury as well as the band - did he discuss that surgery with you as an option or is the band is only wls option?

Oh Cinni...A BRAIN BAND!!!! ha ha LMAO... what a great idea!!! I want one!

Seriously though, no one will mind at all if you keep posting 'while-u-wait'. I have posted a lot of what I thought were dumb questions before and after and nobody has said they mind at all.

I believe most of us enjoy sharing our journeys, otherwise this forum would not exist!

Haha hmm I need a brain band. That just sucks that the bad foods go down so easily.

I am thinking i might keep posting in here so I can look back and see how things were and weight loss for future reference I hope no-one minds if I do that?

I wonder if this pic will work? It's a link to a pic of the Swedish band my Dr said he uses.

I have officially named my band "Sebastian" and I can't wait to have our first date!!!! LOL...Yes I am daft.

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Cinni - if only this wonderful band came with an inbuilt "head" monitor too - lol.
I STILL dish up more thatn a cup of food at times cos I look at it and think it CAN'T POSSIBLY be enough - but it is, and then I have stuff I can't eat.
I don't actually get hungry either - I don't eat between meals, but sometimes can eat more thatn I should and at others, can't keep anything down - a bit of gove and take there. But most of the time the "bad" foods go down without a proble. Just a matter of keeping that "Healthy" thing in your head - still takes some doing tho

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
If I don't get the band Mytime I think I am doomed to failed diets or increasing obesity and health problems anyway. I really do believe that. So I guess watching what I eat and viewing it as eating heathy instead of diet deprivation is probably the sensible way to go. I just panicked at the small amount of food banded people eat for some reason my portion distortion is wildly ingrained and I find it hard to imagine feeling satified on such a small amount.

I was told if women eat less than 1200 calories their bodies go into starvation mode and begin to burn muscle and hold onto fat, is that a load of KarKar?

I think I have some old food ideas I may need to let go of hehe.

Re:Liquefied_stars Reply to this message
Hey again Cinni

Answering the hungry question, it's quite strange, but I don't actually feel all that hungry (this from a person that used to eat the horse and chase the rider!!!).

When I woke from surgery i was very thirsty and couldn't seem to get enough water into me.
The day after surgery I thought I was hungry so I ate all the breakfast the hospital supplied (thin porridge and a juice)thinking how ridiculous..that won't even touch the sides!
However, because I was in a medium amount of surgery pain(please don't worry about the pain, it is not that bad) and still a bit groggy, food didn't seem to rate all that highly on my scale of wants.
When I got home that arvo, I lay on the couch just sipping small amounts of water. When I felt hungry (a new sensation for me because I was always one to eat for other reasons) I made a cup of clear soup but felt really full after only a quarter of a cup. I think it must have been the swelling.
Over the next few days I could tolerate a little more and started to make a couple of the recipes from the liquid straw diet thread (I will bump that thread forward as it is very informative).
Now I find I only really get 'hungry' when hubby is eating foods that I like so I have a cup of vege soup or something and do something else to take my mind off it.
Anyway, only a couple of days to go and I might get put on mushies, and this liquid stage hasn't killed me!

I am so pleased that you were accepted for surgery in 6 months, I waited for my private health to kick in so all up I waited around 18 months.

Keep browsing this board and you will be full bottle when your time comes around and believe me, the time will come around faster than you think!!
