He was waiting for us and told the nurses he wanted me ready for theatre in 1/2 hour. Which didnt end up happening as I collapsed and needed rehydrating before surgery, my bloods came back very low in potassium I think and my kidneys weren't in great shape. Anyway, all is well now, he was able to put and new band in and I ended up staying in hospital for longer due to being so sick on admission. He said I was severly dehydrated and exhausted.

It was all very gradual but in reality I knew something was wrong for quite some time, but didn't want to face it as I was so scared of losing my fill and struggling with weight gain, now I have to go through all this healing again and back to square one with no restriction. I am not in a great place emotionally and am really angry with myself. I have really fought for every kilo lost and now am just so so scared.

So that's my story.

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Many people have asked me what my symptoms were and I will try to go through it now. I do think that band slip symptoms can be different for everyone, but I also think that if you have a gut feeling that something is not right you should ask for further investigation as I ignored all my symptoms hoping "things would settle".

Prior to having any problems I was able to eat most foods (minus white bread, dry meats - the usual suspects) and was enjoying a wide and varied diet, just much much less. I had had the same level of fill for about 7 months and was cruising along really well. About a month ago I started noticing food that would not normally bother me, was giving me a lot of trouble, more PB's etc. I wasn't too worried as I felt fine and as long as the weight is coming off.... Then I started coughing up phlem during the night, I put this down to a chest infection I thought I had, although I FELT FINE!! Then I started geting reflux from time to time. All this time I was having more and more trouble with "normal foods". By last Thursday I was really only tolerating some fluids, I thought I would give it "time to settle" and by Saturday I knew I was in trouble, not having kept any fluids down for 3 days. But then of course it was the long weekend and I didn't want to bother anyone at the doctors. I went in first thing tuesday morning (5 days, no fluids) and my doc took out all my fill and I sat in the waiting room and drank 4 cups of water. I left, feeling ok and went and got a gatorade. About 10 minutes after leaving the doctors I felt terrible and drove straight to hubby's work which was nearby. I could not stop vomiting. We rang doc and he told us to go home, pack a bag and go straight to the hospital.

Hi all

Well here I am at work and it is 4am and I have been doing some research into Lapband surgery. Coincidently I live in Scoresby, so this message board has been a god send. Thankyou very much for all the comments I have read (last 10 pages)

My name is Andy and I am seriously considering the Lapband surgery. Reading all your comments I realise that it is not a quick fix, but seems to be sucessful if you stick to the guidelines etc.

Garry did you feel it works quicker for a bloke? Sorry not been sexist or anything but i have heard weight loss seems to happen quicker on males?????

To all that have lost weight congratulations and to those who have just started out - GOOD LUCK and keep going.

I am currenntly taking Reductile (3 weeks so far) and noticing some loss but not alot. Doc did say it would take awhile for me to loose the 30 kgs I want to loose.

I suppose I want to know from you - has it been worth it and would you recommend it???? I am 124kgs and just want to get back to double figures - BMI = 38.

I don't have private insurance and know it will cost me a bit of $$$$ but I am happy to do that if I can see the benefit in doing so.

I am a little confused at the moment. Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Andy

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Helloooooo all.

I have just got back from a work conference at Phillip Island. Man was it cold down there. We got to go go-karting at the race track. Cool.... (well it hurt a bit when the hail hit my frozen hands, but otherwise good). There is something I would never had a go at pre-band. Would have just sat and watched. Now making a real effort to get in and have a go.

Anyhooooo - into hospital tomorrow for my body lift. Wish me luck (or at least wish me not toooo much pain)

Sorry wishful, don't think I'll be exercising for a while.

Cheers
Sue

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Hi Thanks for the support. I feel soo down, basically as close as crying everyday. Everyday i weigh my self and i seem to be putting on weight, i just don't get it. I'm nearly back to the weight i went in at doing the surgery, if not more. Why is my body like this. I havn't yet started exercising, yes i know its bad but ive been so down on life i just am soo drained when i get home i end up just wanting to sleep.

i'm trying to find some people who can motivate me and i can motivate to do exercise and things to help each other with the weight loss but i've found no one so far. i just feel soo lonley and im soo dissapointed with my self for doing the surgery and for me not loosing weight. Going for yogo today in glen waverley bikrham yogo. i just hope i really do follow through with actually going and don't end up bumming out towards the end of the day.

I really feel like i need someone therefore me to help me thourgh this with pumping me up to do exercise and comming along with me, i feel like such a loner.

if anyone around knox is interested in becoming exercise buddies please let me know, im not very fit though.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Hi wishful

You are not meant to lose weight during the first 6 weeks, and while some do, many put on, as you have no restriction. So don't be too hard on yourself. THe band will not really work until you get the restriction right, and that can take some time. I think this is one thing the surgeons fall down in telling people, you are in a hurry to get things moving, and it just does not happen like that.

Sounds like you now have a bit of restriction, but are certainly not at the 'sweet spot' yet. Now is the time to 'practice' getting used to smaller portions and eating slowly. You have discovered how painful it is to eat too much. Learn from that and try to stop eating to that point. (its not easy, you will probably still do it a bit, we all do). Start to listen to your body's signals about what is enough.

Sounds like you are still eating a fair bit, which is normal, and it will lessen with each fill. Has the dietician given you guidelines to follow? At your stage I had no restriction at all, but religously followed her low fat eating plan, and it helped keep things under control until the restriction took over.

I am concerned by your post that you are slipping into a bit of depression. Give the surgery a call and have a chat to one of the psychologists. That is what they are there for.

Great idea from Purr, keep a food diary too. That helps heaps.

And hang in there. You will get there. It just takes time.

Cheers
Sue

Hang in there wshful, it's a big learning curve for us all and from what i read in these boards the path is different for us all.
For me keeping a food diary is a good start. be honest with it and take note over a few days what your eating patterns are. It helped a lot for me. Also try and see your dietician and discuss what foods your eating and what changes you could make ( if any) . I have noted that quite a few folk gain weight initially in the 'healing stage' .
Good luck with it and keep touch with how things are going.

OMG Erina, you must be looking amazing! Can't wait to catch up and see the new you. Have probably seen you at the shops and just not recognised you. How about putting some photos up on facebook?

Shan, Erina is right, frustrating though it is. You know you are getting close with your fill, hang in there.

Not much band news here. After having my fill out I put on 2kg on a girls weekend away that involved way too much chocolate, alcohol and bikies and dip. But it has stabilised in the fortnight since, and I have not put on any more, so staying under the 60kg mark, so quite happy. Eating more, but not huge amounts, so quite comfortable. One week today til my op......

Cheers

Dont lose faith - hang in there and make that band work for you. I know where you are, it is more of a hassle for you, because of the travell issue. I would press on them that you need to be getting more bang for you buck!!!!

I reached two major milestones this week, I've lost 70 kgs total since being banded and I actually fit into size 14 jeans.

Hope everyone is well....

Thank Erin!

So i phoned Cheryl today because instead of my band getting tighter after Friday it seems to be easier to eat things. I told Cheryl this and that Richard seemed a little confused when he was taking out and putting back in. She told me that it was normal after that happens to have less in than when you went there to begin with...Not overly happy about that actually!!! mAnyway, have another appointment on 19th of this month.....im so ready to get this darn show on the road.....am seriously starting to doubt myself here and loose faith in my band!

HI Everyone

so sorry ive not been in here for some time!! I Have been on holidays in Perth with friends and have been to TWO P!NK concerts and am getting ready to start a new job tomorrow!

Hope everyone is all well. Im feeling a whole load less stressed than two weeks ago, its amazing what some time away will do for you!!!

I had a appointment with Richard the day after i flew in from Perth and i was petrified because while i didnt mess up with my food as such i did have more drinks than i would normally have had! I got on the scales and put on 0.4 since my last weigh in. I was releived that it wasnt more than that but was so disappointed at the same time! I dont think i have my head around this food thing properly. Richard said while it is coming off its not fast enough which made me feel terrible! I am being treated at the royal womens also for PCOS and they are testing me for 'Cushings (?)' disease which could explain the lack of or super slow weight loss!!!! Has anyone else discovered that they are 6 months in and something is just not working for them!!!???

Cheers

Hi Terri

Ringbarking is on 11th June. I reckon it will be a good 2 weeks before I can drive, so July would be good for me. But don't wait for me if you want to have one earlier.

Cheers

Count me in for brunch.

Sooooo, when and where?

Checking my calendar, I can do the next 2 Sundays, but will have kids both weeks. Then I will be out of action for a couple of weeks following my op. So don't org*nise a date around me, or it will be almost a Christmas get together!
