Hi All,

Been enjoying being unemployed don't know where I found time for work.

Between doing couses, playing firefighter some weeks back an the part time job I seem to have reasonably full weeks. Wendy keeps finding things for me to do.

Havn't had coffee for a while when and where, when is your day off Terrie.

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Dear Wishful,

I feel for you, none of us enjoyed the opti yuk phase,
but I just tried to think of it as "only 2 weeks" then
come the rewards, and I will never have to "diet" again.
Perhaps you need to talk to the psych, it is so important
to have your head in the right place, and not to think that this is a miracle cure, cause it is certainly not, are
you still with that boyfriend??????? As you can see from
Erina's very truthful post, it is so important to be surrounded by supportive people, if you are constantly being
told your wasting money, and here she goes again, this won't work either, you end up believing it and setting yourself up for failure, you don't need negative people around you. You said in a previous post that your parents
arn't very supportive either. I'm rambling on here a bit,
but you can see why some people choose not to tell people that they are having it done. If no one at home will give you
support, jump on here anytime and sound off, whinge, cry,
laugh, whatever you want SUPPORT is what you need to get through! THIS IS NOT EASY!!!
Easier said than done.....but try to stop stressing about
every little thing and enjoy the ride to your new life.
I think you said in a previous post, that Richard Gilhome
said because you are so young, your liver size wouldn't be
a major drama. Richard was my surgeon as well.....a whole other story, but after my 1st consultation with him, I left
the place, sobbing and thinking I may as well go and buy a
cream cake, a bottle of wine and drive myself off a cliff.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't let him intimidate
you, his bark is really worse than his bite!
Take care, and good luck with the sugery, will be thinking
of you!

Hi Erina,
Thanks, your so sweet! Easter was good, we have a new puppy that I just love to death, just did day trips and
caught up with friends, the usual brunches, avo teas etc,
and such beautiful weather. Step daughter and family in Thailand at the mo, due to fly out at 10pm tonight, bit of a worry, hope they have no dramas. They have had their share over the last 12 months. Fingers crossed please.

Haven't heard from Craig and Phil, hope they are doin ok.

And what about you!!!!!!! you star.....in the 80's. I am
so proud of you, it took so long for you to get restriction, and perserverence has paid off, you and Sue must be Lapsurgerys' poster chicks! Good on you.

Would love to catch up, last time I went to the support group, I thought you were going to be there, you wern't and I felt like the new kid on the block.....didn't know anyone!
Enjoy whats left of your easter break!

Hi Terri!

How are you going? I hope well, you are always the one on here encouraging everyone!

Have you heard how some of the other old regulars are going? I have been thinking about Phillipa and Craig. I know Craig had a swallow a while back. Hope all is ok in that front.

Did you enjoy your easter? I did! For the first time I enjoyed an easter where I enjoyed all the foods and festivities without binging on them!!! Milestone for me!!

Take care Terri - you gorgeous thing!!!!

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Wishful,

I would definately be honest with the surgeon. You dont want to come out of surgery with no band and have to go through all the healing twice. Have you lost much weight since starting the optifast? When I reached ketosis, I was rapidly losing weight, was NOT hungry (even though I wanted to eat), and I think bad breath is another sign. I think you would know because you get past the struggle stage and reach a comfortably miserable stage!!!

Optifast is horrible - I hated it and struggled so much, but I had great support system, my hubby did it with be every night (he ate normally during the day at work) and every weekend he shaked it up too! He struggled worse than me because he never actually got into ketosis becasue he was coming on and off the diet. I thought it was wonderful of him to help me through it, I cried alot and worried that this was the beginning of the end and that I would never eat again. I was really scared going into the surgery and cried to my surgeon before he wheeled me into the theatre. But I would say now that I am through that hard stuff that this has been a life saving decision for me. It is hard and scary, but try to focus on the big picture and the end goal.

Take care and good luck,

Erina

ERINA THATS FANTASTIC....you must be ecstatic.....how are you going to reward yourself for such an amazing effort? Very very proud of you.

Well hope everyone has had a happy easter.

Mine was a little sad actually, have been spending some time with a wonderful guy and he told me last night that hes not interested in pursuing anything with me, am really sad about it because he seemed like he was different. Anyway so of naturally out of habit i have blamed myself and the way i look for it and am trying SSSSOOOOOOOO hard not to do the emotional eating thing that i normally would do. We'll see how that goes i suppose wont we.

I would call the dietitian or the surgon and tell them whats going on. They would be able to advise of what you can do or what is going to happen. Im starting Opti today after a failed attempt yesterday. I know how hard it is main thing is to hang in there and know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

All the best

Im really stressing at the moment and my surgery is on wednesday. I have found it sooo hard to stick to this opti diet, and now im worrying about how do i know if im in ketosis? and how do if my liver has shrunk? how do i know if they will do the operation for me (obviously this proove 100% that i need it done), how do i know they wont turn me away at the last minute?

im so stressed right now that what if they don't do the operation for me.

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Thanks for the guidance guys.

Im so stuck right now - when i was sick on the weekend iput food into me but it was only chicken and salad ad that was only for 1 meal a day so i could get better.

since monday i have followed the diet sooo strict and i weighed my self today and for some reason i've put on .4kg.

i don't understand this, everyone has lost weight with the shakes but im puttin on weight. im starting to think, if i can't loose weight on this shake like everyone else then i wont be a successful lap band patient.

when i met with richard gilholm on monday, he was kinda abrupt and said you hanv't lost any weight and that i should have lost at least 3-4 while on this shake (but im not loosing anything), in the end he said don't worry about focusing it. I asked the question what if i don't loose that weight will my liver not shrink and he said because im young (21) it should be ok. But just thinking about this im really getting worried if this aren't working - and its making it soo much harder.

:S

helpppp please. im sooo fustrated right now to think i havn't lost anything :(

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
I really struggled with optifast, and started early because I was petrified my liver would never shrink enough and I wouldn't get my band. Mr Hensman was really honest with me and said that he could tell immediately whether someone had followed the optifast or not by looking at the liver and that he had closed someone up without putting in the band because of this the day before my surgery.

I would really encourage you to try to stick to the plan, the first few days are awful, but you are probably making it more difficult for yourself by not allowing your body to get into ketosis, therefore you would be hungry and craving things all the time.

Remember - the band is the ultimate goal, but I was really excited by the rapid weight loss while on optifast.

Feel free to come on here and have a whinge - I know I sure did!! The optifast really is the hardest part of it all.

Take care and good luck.

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Hi wishful

Congrats on your date, not long to go now.

Ok - optifast is the hardest part of the whole process. And it is hard to stick to. After all, it is a diet, and if we were good at sticking to diets we would not need a band in the first place. However - remember the purpose of it. It is to shrink your liver for surgery. If you don't stick to it you have a very real chance of waking up after the op with no band. The surgeons will just close you up again, rather than cut you open right the way down, or risk splitting your liver if they try to move it and its too big.

I found what worked best for me on optifast was - shake for breakfast, half a bar (cappucino or berry were quite ok) for a morning snack, vegetable soup for lunch ( I am not a big veggie fan, but made up all the allowed veggies into a yummy soup), the other half of the bar for afternoon tea. More soup for dinner, with a shake or bar as well. Plus diet jelly for in between. So this way I was eating all day, and did not get too hungry.

If you eat stuff other than the allowed, your body will not go into ketosis, and your liver will not shrink. I had to attend a function during my opti stage, and the dietician said I would be ok as long as I only had lean protein (eg chicken), and salad. Absolutely no carbs.

I have been successful with the band, 52kg gone, and BMI now 24. The band is very different to the opti stage, so don't worry about that yet. Sure, you can cheat with the band, but its a lot harder, as you physically can't eat much of whatever you are cheating with.

So every time you think about cheating with the opti, think of waking up from the op with no band. And go and have a diet jelly or sugar free lollies......

All the best with it

Cheers
Sue

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Hi,

Been a little while since i posted on here. I'm finally having my surgery on wednesday (15th). I am totally struggaling with the shakes, it sooo difficult for me not to eat anything but the shakes. I started the shakes on wednesday (1st) and have eaten normal food for 1 meal nearly everyday (except today). I got really sick sincei started the shakes on wednesday, came down with the flue so thought it would be good to get proper food into me. Havn't eaten junk food real(i saw relly because i ate it once during the week), however eaten mainly strengthening food such as fruit and salads etc.

Im now kinda worried if i can;t stick to the shake diet how am i going to handle the lap band. Im really wanting to gain advice and guidance if anyone else had experienced this issue during the shake stage and how they got through it? if they cheated a little? what they did? and if they band has been successful for them? and how has the feeling been different to the urge to eat other food then just the shake?

a little help right now would be so great. im really worried at the moment

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
Hi everyone,

Shan - you sound in better spirits! Im glad you are reapng the rewards from all your hard work. Fingers crossed for all systems go from here on in!

Sue - Yes, the weight is coming off quickly now for some reason. I think, finally, I have just "got it" in the head so to speak! I saw my sister for the first time since Christmas this week and she couldn't believe how much I had lost since seeing her last. I actually went back to my little record of weekly losses and worked out I have lost 20kg since the end of 2008. In a week or two I will definately be an 80's girl for sure. I am pretty sure I haven't been this weight since I was 13 years old, which is an achievment in itself. What's the latest with you and the tummy? Enjoy your anniversary!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Hey everyone,

Things all going fairly well for me at the moment and i must say that my confidence levels are starting to soar. I went out last night for a girlfriends birthday and got so much attention from the men that were out and in pictures i only have one chin and also a jaw line...........im absolutely stoked. Ive noticed that being as tired as i am today i seem to have a large amount of restriction....whichis good because habit for me is after a night out to eat rubbish and now i just cant............its fantastic!!!

Re:Knox Hospital bandits - Melbourne Reply to this message
wow Erina, 80's!! We won't recognise you the next time we see you. Gee thats dropping quickly now, or so it seems to me. You must be thrilled.

Was the boy behaving himself at FG? I presume you saw him shopping with the school group. They shop each Tuesday, then on Wednesdays cook their lunch with whatever they bought. Great idea for them to learn money and shopping and cooking too, but its rare he will eat what they cook.

I'm hanging out for the holidays. Unfortunately I only get the 2nd week off, so the kids are being shipped off to my Mum for next week. On the plus side, its my wedding anniversary next week, so we can actually go out in peace. Do you have any great plans for the holidays?

I've been wondering how Craig is too..... hope all is well.

Cheers
