Hi All
I was banded on 31st Oct and so far.. I have lost a total of... wait for it.... 7 friggin kgs!!!! Now I only got my second fill last week and finally I have some restriction. I dont have the ideal ammt of restriction but its better then what I had before, which was nothing.
Anyway, my issue is this..
I joined a gym and I believe I work out pretty hard when i go. I do 2 classes a week (body pump and body combat) and I always feel like im going to die afterwards because ive worked so hard. Keep in mind, im now 128kgs so it doesnt take much exercise for me to feel like im going to die, lol. Anyway, on top of that I usually have an hour session of just normal gym work... so stuff like the tready and the bikes and the weights. So far, after going for 4 weeks, I have lost NOTHING! Not a thing!! Now one of the ladies said my body might have gone into shock from all this new exercise and it might take a little longer for me to 'get going'. She also said my metabolism may have slowed down as im not eating as much as I used to.
Point is, im over it! Sure there are times when I still have like a packet of chips but I am NOWHERE near as bad as I used to be and my portions are now small. Im just getting to the point where im saying im my head 'whats the point, its not doing anything'.
What can I do pple? Im at a loss! |

Hi Angel, as Kerri says, I am a qualified personal trainer. Do please try to get to the pool, even though I'm a much smaller size now I still wear bike pants under my bather cos I hate my thighs! LOL just wear the boardshorts and tank top over them until you feel happy to wear them on their own.
To start with you need gentle exercise that won't put pressure on your joints. Do you have a treadmill? Or one of the new Vibro platforms would be great as they cause no pain and help strengthen your joints.
Read through the exercises I've put on this thread because I'm sure you could do a lot of them at home.

Angel,
Marion is a personal trainer, but I will let her respond to you re exercises.
Just wanted to say re the swimming/bathers issue, have you tried looking for boardshorts to put over your bathers? You should be able to find them in Myers or Target? If you are self conscious about your top half just wear a t-shirt.
It's really worth while to push yourself out of your comfort zone because it is really in the best interests of your health and your rehabilitation. Additionally you will feel so much better about yourself for having had a go and moving!
Good luck Angel!

Marion.
I have been reading through a few of these pages, and was wondering if you are a personal trainer.?
If so, do you have any ideas what I can do after having had mutliple joint replacements, and one very recently like 8 weeks ago.
I know swimming is good, but I don't feel like I have lost enough yet to put swimmers on. stupid I know.
there is no way on this earth I would go walking in this heat. just wondering.thanks so much |

I would think they are all quite sore, there's no way they wouldn't be. From what I've seen on there most of them haven't done any exercise for ages, if ever.
As you said I think they've edited out those bits. They are also probably fairly high on the adrenalin and endorphins. I know it sounds strange but DOMS(delayed onset muscle soreness) is quite addictive.

Hey Marion,
Just wondering re Biggest Loser...in this early stage of the game, why do you think the contestants aren't whinging and complaining about being stiff and sore?? I remember when I first started training I was a train wreck!! Do you think they are simply editing this out, or maybe getting massages etc to help them adjust??
Just wondered what your take on this is?

If any of you want to lose a few cms without exercising as such, buy a vibro plate machine.
I have been using mine for 4 weeks now. After the first 2 weeks I had lost 19cms from my measurements. I have just done my measurements again today and I'm a further 10cms down. So that's 29 cms all over and this is how I've lost it
Bust -2cms
Midriff -4cms
Waist -4cms
Scarline -3cms (the scar from my torso lift)
Hips -5.5cms
Thighs L -2cms R -2.5cms
Calves L -2cms R -1cm
Arms L -1.5cms R -1.5cms
I'm pretty stoked with that. My weight has only gone
down by about 1 kg. Obviously this drop in measurements can't be sustained month after month.

The ones that really get to the legs and butt are squats and lunges.......they do work on abs too. A lot of Bandits can't do them as they have knee problems from carrying the weight for so long.
For the abs....fit ball crunches, oblique crunches, leg lifts, plank, sit ups. For the butt...fit ball body raises, step up kick backs, leg extensions, side leg raises. For the legs, step ups, fit ball squats, calf raises.

Hi fat girl thin,
The cross trainer is an aerobic exercise which burns fat this can't help you with saggy skin. If you want to build muscle you need to do weight bearing exercises. Again running is aerobic. 1 hour a day on the cross trainer is more than enough to keep you fit. As you are going to have surgery next year to remove skin I would do all you can to strengthen your core muscles and upper body. This means doing weights and resistance exercise. If you can afford to work with a personal trainer it's something I'd recommend.

maccyd I'm not sure who your message was for. If it was for me then I'm not a young thing. In 2 weeks time I'll be 54 years old.
The band was the best thing I ever did for myself. Having lost 40kgs it has opened up a whole new world for me. The biggest change I suppose for me was becoming a personal trainer. I now train other Bandits and help them to get to their goals too. As they say, what goes around comes around.

Maccyd,
You are wrong chicken!! I am in my 30's and love my band, I am at goal weight and life is great. There are so many people here in there 40's. 50's and 60's who have been even more successful than me!
As long as you are mobile and can increase the amount of exercise you do, GRADUALLY, you will be fine. My opinion is that age has not much at all to do with your success, its more what you do to acheive your goal.
A person in their 70's can eat milkshakes and chocolate just the same as someone in their teens who is banded.
You will love your band and wish you would have had it done long ago.
All the best,
d |

That's a bit heavy just an hour before training. You'd probably have to wait at least 2 hours to train after that. Even longer if your restriction is good. You'd be best to have something light with carbs in, eg rice crackers with philly if you are going to eat an hour before. Then afterwards have a protein shake like Musashi.
A strong coffee is good before training as it increases your metabolism.

Marion,
Mmmm, yes this is a recent occurence. Might be food, I ate 1 hour before I exercised today. Do you think I should leave eating to at least 2 hrs before exercise?
