Hi Marion. can I please ask you a question.??
As you may know, I have been having orthopaedic surgery off an on all year, so getting out of the house has been rather difficult.
My son wanted to take to me to the University Gym, but I really don't feel comfortable in a setting with all skinny 18 year olds.
I can't use that vibrating machine sadly, so I am now thinking of getting a treadmill to walk. I am okay on flat even surfaces, but if its rocky, uneven I have to walk with a walking stick.
I am thinking of hiring it to start with as I already have a bike which I don't use as it bores me to death.
Is there anything I need to look out for in choosing such a thing. like speed incline etc.
I have been told I can't go swimming, I am not allowed to do any resistance work on my arm.
if I like it then I will go ahead and buy one. |

| Kylie, I have been having reflux, doctor kept removing fill, reflux still there, could eat anything, hardly any restriction, weight was creeping up. bariam, xray, said I had dilated osphegas, so out came all the fill. apparently food stores up in the osphegas, not going thru band as it should, to that effect. So giving osphegas, a chance to shrink, I hope it does, before another fill. |

| Thanks for that, K, I just hope he decides to put back fill, have had barium, and that did show, dilated oesphagus. I think he is hoping it is not a slip. I have had 8mls in band, and lost restriction since december,08. Wonder how other banders have coped with this situation, and what they were told, as doctor made out, I may have been the only one in this situation, thank God for this, board. It is a blessing listen to all you guys. |

Hi Floss,
I think M did have that too. I train with her (or she tortures me - not sure which - lol) I too had a dialated oesophagus. Last November my Dr took all my fill out and I was terrified. After 4 weeks (and no PBing, no slime, no thick egg white consistency gloop) I went back and had put on 4 kg in 4 weeks.
He said I think we'll put back in 4 mls to start with (I had almost 7) I said is that what you want to do and he looked at me and said, I don't think we have a choice, do you?? I have been slowly increasing back up to 5 and a half now and things seem to be fine as long as I follow the rules (chew properly, eat slowly...) The barrium swallow is not the nicest of things - but it is the after effects on the bowels that is like concrete.

| Marion, Hi there, this is floss, Hope you dont mind me emailing you. Im not too sure, but I think I read somewhere along the line, that you had a stretched oesphageous, this has happened to me, doctor took all the fill out, and I am panicking, all my hard work is going to go down the drain. Sending me for endoscopy. I just so wanted this band to work for me. Please tell me how you got on, or if there is someone out there with this problem let me know, I am stressing out at the moment. My email address, is skidonk@yahoo.com.au thank you in anticipation |

Hi Cat, What I would change is the order of what you are doing. Do your weights before your cardio. This is because if you do your cardio first your body will burn up all the fuel and there will be little left for your muscles to lift the weights. You should be able to do higher weights and higher reps if you do the weights first.
What you are doing on the treadmill is interval training and the fact that you are doing it at an incline will burn more calories. Why not alternate the treadmill with the rower? You can do interval with the rower as well. Same with the skier. Just rotating between the three will be good because your body gets used to it if you use one machine all the time.
How often do you work out and do you do both cardio and weights each time?
Marion
I haven't heard the term Nautilus room before. Is it just another name for weights room? |

Hi Marion,
I just saw a post about interval training. I think I might be doing this unintentionally already. Could you please tell me how effective you think my workout is?
I begin by getting on the treadmill and putting the incline to 3%. I walk at about 5.0 for a minute or so then I begin running. I turn it up to 6.2 for 60 seconds. Then I go back to 5.0 for 1-2 minutes. Then I do a 60 second run again. I repeat this for 20 - 30 minutes. Then I go into the nautilus room and get on each machine. I do 15 - 20 reps on each machine. There's about 15 machines.
I am very red faced and feel really good afterwards.
How does this sound? Should I give the nautilus weights a rest one day? There is also rowing machines and a cross country skiier.

Anyone who wants to tighten their butt can do these exercises anywhere......even waiting for a bus.
First one is literally tighten your butt. Stand with your feet slightly apart, shoulders relaxed back and down. Pull your abs in towards your spine. Clench your butt cheeks together for a count of 10. Release and repeat about 8-10 times. If you are doing it at the bus stop try not to make a strange face.........lol. Make sure that you are bringing all your muscles to work and not just (pardon me) the bit in the middle. Your butt cheeks should actually move inwards as you clench. Do this as many times a day as you like, you can actually do it sitting down too so if you are waiting in the doctors.......clench away! Did you know that Jean Claude Van Damme (sp?) does this all the time to keep his butt toned?
Second one can be done anywhere that there is a small stable step of about 20-25cms deep. Stand infront of the step. Abs on, shoulders relaxed back and down. Step up onto the step with your left foot. As you go up kick back with you right leg. Try not to wobble about or bend forward, If your balance isn't too good try to hold on to something stable. Place your right foot back down and then your left. Repeat this about 10 times kicking back with your right leg and then swap and do 10 with your left leg kicking back. You should feel this in your butt muscles (glutes). If you do this 2 or 3 times a day you will see a difference in a few weeks.

Have you used a rowing machine, they are very good whole body work out?
Try rotating between two or three different machines each time you train (if you are going to a gym). |

Hi Nic, you can do the same exercises with a stretchy resistance band that you can with the leg Magic. It's a waste of money. Just tie the band around a study pole or frame and step in with one foot so it's around your ankle. Hold onto the pole for balance. Move away from the pole to arms length. Standing still and strong, hold your abs in and move the foot inside the band out and across your body away from the pole. Move it as far as you can and you should feel a pull in your adductors (inside thigh muscles). Move you foot back to the start. Repeat this slowly and steadily for about 12-15 reps. Then change sides and do the other leg. Don't swing your legs as this uses momentum and not your muscles.
You can also do this facing the pole and kicking backwards with the leg in the band. This works your butt muscles.

I am geting really bored with my elliptical cross trainer thingy at the moment and need a change or variety, has anyone tried the Leg Magic machines, thought it might help with the flabby thighs? Or any other exercise equipment for variety that actually works?
thanks Nic |

Maccy, I did see your post and answered you. I think it was on the Dr Dolan thread but not sure.
Yes we go to Stickys on Sunday mornings. Those going for coffee and chat get there around 10.30am. Those who do Jacobs Ladder usually go there around 8.30-9.00 and come on to Stickys afterwards. Those who like to do a walk meet at Stickys at 9.30 and get back around 10.30 for coffee.
What suburb are you in?
You can email me on grandbear54@hotmail.com if you want.

Kerri it's funny I remember saying to my trainer, back when I was on my journey to goal, "I will be so glad when this training gets easier, when is that likely to be?". He said one word...."Never" LOL. It should never become easy because then there would be no point in doing it because it wouldn't be doing you any good. As your body becomes accustom to each level you just ramp up the intensity or the duration.
Have some exciting news to tell you on Friday.
Hugs

PT Marion!!
I decided to give the interval training a go today, not on the bike (you'd be happy to know), but the x-trainer and rower.
OMG...I struggled! Usually I do 15 min each on rower & x-trainer. Today...different story.
X-trainer: did 2 min normal, 1 min intense and repeated form 10 minutes (was knackered after that). Then...
Rower: did 2 min normal then intended to do 1 min intense, but could only manage 30sec intense!!! I had to stop to breathe (which took 2-3 min)!! I then repeated same for 10 minutes (including the stopping and starting)!!!
You know, you get to a point in your gym routine and think to yourself that your somewhat fit and doing good! Then new challenges like the interval training just throw that misconception right out the window (lol)!!!
I will persevere nonetheless! My next small challenge will be cease the stopping and starting on the rower (wonder how long that will take)!!??
But its all good! I must say not just because of the new interval challenge, but I really struggled with exercise generally today, it seemed so hard and such an effort. But I guess you get that from time to time!!
Anyway, just wanted to share that with you!!!
Kerri xx |
