I just thought i would metion that my hernia surgery was done by keyhole so i am healed a bit quiker than normal hernia surgery by large cuts...
Just thought i would share that bit of info :O)

Hi Marion or anyone,
I was just wondering if i could ask for some of your advice please?
I have had an exercise bike for ages and i have just newley go a x trainer and now in maybe 2 or 3 weeks time i will be getting a "Genki" full body vibration machine. It is ordered i am waiting on delivery.
So my question to you is what do you recomend as some sort of exercise routine to start off with? So about me.....
I was banded Feb 4th 2008 Starting weight of 141.4 Bmi 53.
To now currently at 85.0kgs and Bmi of 32.
Now since being banded i have to confess i have done little to No exercise so i am far from being fit!
I had a hernia repaired 7 weeks ago now and so now i am ready and rearing to get started in some exercise and fitness:O)I am wanting to get to goal weight this year.
So anyway here i am asking you for some advice on how to get started with getting moving.
I look forward to you response or anyone elses for that matter:OP

thanks I will let you know, and I will start slowly.
I am still trying to lift this stupid arm up, I can hold it up with the other arm, but can't hold it up on its own.
Its now really getting me down.
I can put the washing out with one arm now, and do all the other household activites with one arm, but I am right handed and i want it back. !!!
I have to do the left shoulder, when this one is better, joke joke.
its put me off for life. |

Hi Angel, that sounds like a good idea. With the cross trainer start slowly, just a couple of minutes at a time. Also do expect your legs to be sore to start with but don't let it put you off.

Hi fatnomoref, It really depends how long it takes you to heal and recover. I was training about 3 weeks after my banding but I had no problems with my op. I'd say leave it 3-4 weeks and then start slowly. You could ask your surgeon what his guidelines are too.

Marion.
We have decided to hire both machines, a treadmill and a cross trianer, then will decide which to buy as good ones are quite expensive, so I want to get it right.
Its going to be hard to start with as I haven't done any exercise in years. been having too much orthopaedic stuff done.
hubby will use them also as he needs to loose a bit. so its all good.

I was told at 6 weeks I could resume sport and pretty much do anything sport or gym wise that I wanted, although the nurse said just to let staff at the gym know in case they should modify anything. As I don't go to a gym I don't know what they might modify??

Hi Crystal, once you have recovered from the op you can do any exercise you like. I know Bandits that do all of those classes with no problems. Usually the port or band does not get in the way of exercising or any other activities.

| I'm being banded on the 12th May and have set myself up for personal training at the gym once things have healed. I have been going to the gym for a few years and love to do RPM (spinning) classes, Body Pump classes and Body Balance. I was wondering if I will be able to return to this level of exercise once my calorie intake is significantly lower. And does the port or band get in the way of some activities??? |

Sorry I haven't been in touch, so busy with uni doing my nursing prac (at King Eddies) all I do is work, eat, sleep whilst also trying to get some gym time in and of course looking after the family! It will be like this for me until June.

I had a look at that site, that is the machine I was thinking of.
But I think for now, Marion is right, that the treadmill would be better for the moment, as I can't reach my arm out, when that arm part swings back and forth, due to my last surgery.
I am a bit complex when it comes to working out.
Then when I am fully mobile, I will get back to the pool. |

They are actually eliptical trainers.

They are very smooth and there is no impact at all. Rated better for you than swimming and once you get the hang of them they are awesome.
It is easier than walking and a much better workout. I have had the treadmills and they totally suck compared to one of these machines. |

Hi Tracie, yes we are talking about a cross trainer, also called an eliptical walker. I have one in my gym at home to train my clients on.
Must admit I haven't seen the ad with the nun! LOL

I'm not sure that you ladies are referring to a cross trainer here. A cross trainer is kind of like riding a bike but standing up and your arms are going back and forth too. Legs are going in an oval shape as opposed to round like on a bike.
I think you might be referring to the other contraption which I've seen in a tv ad where a nun is using this machine where her legs and arms are moving the same type of motion, ie. legs gliding back and forth. She looks like she could do the splits on the machine!
I have a cross trainer and love the thing. It is a great all over cardio workout without any pounding to the joints unlike a the treadmill which you could potentially be thumping your feet down and jarring knees and hips.
Just my opinion and I'm not a PT.

I know which machine you are talking about. I wasn't sure I was on the same track, so I looked on a sports site.,
I tried that thing once and I am telling you it was hilarious, there were these girls in the room, they were swinging their legs and arms, back and forth at a rate of knots !! and I could hardly get the thing to move.
Put me in the water, and I could swim a klm even with my fitness level as it is.when the arm is working that is.
Thanks I will stick with a treadmill for now, don't let me get too carried away. LOL |

Angel I suppose it all boils down to what you will be able to do in the long run. With the cross trainer, if you have it on the lowest setting, it doesn't take too much effort to work it. Then if you are okay with it you can gradually do higher settings more quickly. If you go to a hire shop you can try out the cross trainers as well as the treadmills.I would probably lean towards the treadmill and you can work your arms on that if you can walk without holding on. If you can do that you can carry a couple of light dumbells and pump your arms as you walk.

My opinion is don't buy a crosstrainer with your terrible joints!!!!!
I can't use one, I am really bad at it. I find I do jerky motions on it instead or graceful glides if that makes sence.
With a crosstrainer you use your brut strength to work the thing, if you stop it stops.
I reckon a treadmill would be the best as you can set it very low and got at your own pace. You may find you want to walk very very slowly but with a little incline, or you may go faster and keep it flat.
Marion will know what you need but you have to look after your bionic joints Angel! They last think you want to do is fall off something and crack a hip!

may be I should get the cross trainer, rather than the tredmill, as it will work the upper body also, what do you think Marion? |

I ordered a cross trainer yesterday. I love them.
This one is just awesome so I am looking forward to getting stuck into that.
I now have a great gym set up at home and even got rid of the beer fridge. |

Hi Marion,
Yes I could walk in the pool, but every-one in there are either doing classes or water aerobics, and I could see me bumping into evey one.I could ask them of their quieter moments.
I am not allowed to do any resistance with the new shoulder just yet.
Thanks so much for the info on the treadmill.I will certainly go and check it out.
I have been trying to walk around our garden its an acre so its big enough, going round and round. good job no one can see me LOL

Hi Angel, I'm sorry that so many avenues for exercise are closed to you.
With a treadmill you want one that is very sturdy, a lot of the cheaper ones on the market are very rickety. You want to make sure that the belt is wide enough for you to comfortably walk on. That the controls are clear and easy to work. One that has control over the speed, incline and time would be good. If you are going to hire one make sure you go to the hire shop and try out at least two or three. I would hire it for a couple of months to see if you are happy using it and will continue to do so. If the time comes that you are happy to go ahead and buy one, speak to the hire company. They may have one that you can buy for a reduced amount.
I was just wondering why you aren't allowed to swim, would you be allowed to walk in the pool?
