Glad you are being carefull, you only get one life, and so many divers become complacent, they used to look at me as if I was from Mars. ??
I was an experienced diver, slim, and very fit. with over 500 dives. was about to become a dive master in my local area, so I wasn't an idiot.
I was told at that time to dive in QLD I had to have a dive computer, well that was the start of my troubles.
stick always to the tables, Carl was so angry when he found out they were being replaced.
I didn't want to scare the c++p out of you, I just wanted you to be safe. If I can prevent it happening to someone else, then that's all that matters to me.
I heard on the news last night a student diver died doing her course |

OMG - I'm amazed you went through all that! Certainly brings out the dangers of diving at depth!!
Thanks for your advice, really appreciate a second opinion and believe me, although I'm a pretty conservative diver and dive on mixed gases, I'll probably postpone this trip until I'm confident with my limits again.
Thanks again! |

I hate to say this, but that sounds very dangerous if your dives are 40-50 metres.
I had the bends from doing 14 dives in 6 days but the deepest was only 30 metres and I was only there for less than 4 minutes as the current was raging.
Carl Edmonds( sydney) he has written many books on nitorgen narcosis. and the Australian Navy Doctor, told me to never ever dive more than 2 a day. preferably just one and there is not usually a problem.
you must wait 24 hours and Carl says 36 after doing a deep dive. so say you have a deep dive at 4 pm. then whatever you do don't dive the next morning as I did, as this is not a long enough break for you to get rid of the nitrogen.
trust me I am an expert on this now. having had them both look after me in my court case.
It wrecked every single joint in my body and I am now on round 2/3 of joint replacements because of this.I am still paying the price to this day.
if you want more info I would be happy to chat with you on private e-mail, anything to keep you safe. !!! |

Thanks guys, I agree 1 month post op doesn't seem safe at all.
After watching a friend recover from the bends (nearly a 1.5 year recovery period!!) I'm even more cautious.
My dilema is that late last year (before I made the decision to be banded) I booked on a overseas diving holiday for September. The trip will be very intensive, average 40-50m dives, 16 dives over 10 days. Although this will be 4 months post-op, and all research I could find said it would fine, my priority is my health obviously and whether I my body will fit enough. I've dived being overweight for several years now and although it certainly limits what I can/can't do, diving is a passion I want to return to....one day!
I do not have to make a final decision until July when the balance of the trip is due, so will wait to see how my recovery is going then. I'm going to contact D.A.N. also and seek their advice.
Thanks again guys for your advice! |

Personally,
I would make sure you are very very well healed after the surgery, I don't think one month is long enough in my opinion.
Having had the "Bends" you need to make sure your body is at its optimum.
Also if you are getting banded, then it means you must be overweight to some degree, otherwise you wouldn't be getting a band.
You are more likely to get The "Bends" if you are overweight. |

Sublime, I am interested to know if scuba diving is work or play for you and where you go scuba diving.I agree, 1 month is not very long post-op and you would want to be back to full health. I would be more concerned about getting an infection (wound or chest). I would also want to know what depths you plan to go to.Some people say their bands perform differently with flying so chances are the band could play up under deep sea pressures. Interesting question you raise, let us know what you learn.

Hi everyone!
I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with scuba diving after banding? I'm due to be banded 15/05/09 and my doctor says after 1 month, I'll be fine to go diving again.
(Apart from not being able to fit into my wetsuit!!!) I think 1 month is a very small time for your body to heal to be put under the pressure at depth.
If anyone has any experience with this or knows of people who have returned to diving, I'd be really interested to hear your stories.
Thanks guys! |

was also going to say....
Try to only take your measurement every 2 weeks, that way you should see a difference. If you do it more often the difference might be too small to register.
Also with the vibro machine, when you get it. Try to do 2 or 3 10 minute sessions on it most days. You can sit, stand, kneel, lay etc on them. They are great and very relaxing. They do make a difference to your measurements but in themselves they don't make you lose weight. They are very good for the circulatory and lymphatic systems. They make the body release endorphins too so you get a sense of well being and they help you sleep better.
In a couple of weeks, after you have done a weigh and measure, come back and tell me your results. Then I will post a new workout for you. You need to change your workout at least every two weeks.
Hope you do really well.

As for the Biggest looser
I hate the show, won't watch it, the way they treat overweight people.
Its so un-realistic and people expect the same sort of results.
I watched a show on TV where some of previous contestants were left out there alone after the show and put all the weight back on.'Its only done for ratings. |

Oh Mel,
oh oh !!!! I know exactly where you are coming from.
as a youngster, teens and before I was a very competitive swimmer, then progressed to scuba diving.
I am happy to have a swim even do water aerobics, as I am already wet from the water and not sweat.
I have never liked and still do not like, SWEATING like a pig.
My body temp is all over the place at the best of times, I don't like getting up a sweat in a gym.
My son goes religiously to the gym every single day and gets this adrenalin rush.
I am yet to experience such a thing.
Thank God I have fake hips and knees to help with the excuse.
there I am honest |

Dimi,
The buzz you refer too, for me is a feeling of general well being and elevated mood. I don't get it during exercise but after I have showered and sat down to relax. I find exercise clears the fog in my head (being a blonde it can be a heavy fog at times...LOL!!) and my skin has a definate shine/radiance to it. Having said that, this only happens when I work out really hard and have a good sweat worked up. |

Hey Mel, I think its when you start to see a change in yourself phisicaly, mentaly ,emotionaly. I think sometimes we lik the biggest loosers on tv and we want that buzz they have. They excercise alot and get amazing results but we dont see those results. But we forget that they are excercising 7hrs a day. I just need to forget about what the weight loss and get going with excercise for health.

Me neither Dimitra. I have tried everything to find that buzz that everyone talks about. I got a personal trainer and went religiously three times a week for about 5 months... cost me a fortune and I hated the gym even more than ever. I have done the walking, done it and tried it all, and still no idea what everyone is going on about with the desire to exercise.
I have given up... I now only do what I have to do. I recently had a fracture in my leg, and I was secretely pleased... a good excuse not to have to hit the streets and gym. Pathetic I know... but when I find that elusive rush that I am supposed to get, I might get enthusiastic about exercise.

Couldn't cope with it any longer. Threw up in a bowl and it was a huge amount of slime........ewwwwwwww. I found one tablet that was whole, no sign of the others. I know it's disgusting, I just look on it as a science experiment.
I could well be interested in that session, providing I don't have a client at the time. Let me know :O) |

Your poor thing, haven't had that problem for a while, I find holding my breath on and off can help move a blockage?
Re the personal trainer thing, I was thinking of trying an outdoor PT...gym gets boring at times. Thinking Fridays...would you be interested in coming along if I can sort it?

oh no Kerri, that's not allowed! LOL
Of course stop for short rests and drink heaps of water, at least a litre during this session.
I'm having a problem at this very moment, meds stuck big time and trying not to make myself sick. Chest hurts and feels like I have a tennis ball in my throat.

Marion,
What a great little workout you've put together with the exercise bike and xtrainer. I am going to try it on Tues when back at gym.
Just one question, can I stop at anytime between the exercise bike & xtrainer for a drink and to catch my breath!!??

Hi Tina, you have made amazing progress in the last year, over 55kgs lost! Wow!
Firstly buy yourself a lined note book and call it Tina's Weight Loss and Exercise Diary. Take the measurements of your bust, waist, hips, thighs, calves and upper arms. Then weigh yourself. Write your measurements in your diary along with the date and how much you weigh. Every day write in your diary what exercise you have done. Write down everything even if you just walk to the corner and back. Also write down if you don't do any exercise.
Try to do some sort of exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week. But don't have Saturday and Sunday off together or you won't feel like exercising again on Monday.
Are you able to walk for about 30 minutes without any problems? If you are then I very much advise you to do this as many days of the week as you can. Walk at every opportunity, park the car as far away from the shops as you can. Or better still walk to the shops if you don't have too much to carry back.
Do you have any steps in your house or garden? If you do start your session with 15 step ups starting on your right leg. Step up on your right foot and bring your left foot up. Step down on your right foot and step your left foot down. Do this 15 times. Then have a short rest, about 30 seconds, drink water. Repeat stepping up on the left foot this time and do 15 of those. Short rest, drink water. Repeat the whole thing again, 15 right, rest, water - 15 left, rest, water.
Next do 5 minutes at medium pace on your exercise bike.
2 minutes as fast as you are able on the Xtrainer.
5 minutes medium pace on exercise bike
2 minutes as fast as you are able on the Xtrainer
5 minutes medium pace on exercise bike
2 minutes as fast as you are able on Xtrainer
5 minutes slow - medium pace on exercise bike
2 minutes of stretching your arms, legs, back...everywhere.
When you have your vibro machine do a 10 minute session sitting on it after this workout. |

Seeing the gorgeous Steve W next Thurs! Was hoping to have lost 10kg by then, but will be more like 8kg. Hope he won't be too disappointed...he is my toughest critic (lol)!!
