HI COZZIE,

IF U WISH TO USE YOUR WII, WHILE U R WAITING TO USE YOUR WII FIT WHICH IS ALOT OF FUN I MUST SAY, IT IS GREAT FOR STARTING OUT WITH, THEY ALSO HAVE EA SPORTS WII ACTIVE,$99 WHICH INCORPORATES RESISTANCE WITH A BAND, AND U CAN CUSTOMIZE THE EXERCISES TO SUIT U AND YOUR ABILITIES, THE IMPORTANT THING WITH IT IS TO MAKE SURE U STRETCH JUST AFTER A LITTLE WARM UP AND WHEN U FINISH.
THERE IS ALSO ONE PUT OUT BY JILLIAN FROM AUSSIE BIGGEST LOSER, IT IS APPROX 69.99. EB GAMES HAS THIS ONE.
I HAVENT USED JILLIANS YET, BUT I FIND ACTIVE IS QUITE GOOD, WHEN I CANT GET OUT FOR A WALK, AND IT OFFERS TROPHY INCENTIVES AND A 30 DAY CHALLENGE, WHICH HELPS TO GET U TO COMMIT TO 20-30MINS A DAY, IT DOES ALLOW U TO HAVE 2 REST DAYS A WEEK.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU
TAKE CARE
JO

Mike I'd probably leave it another couple of weeks before you use the vibrogym.

Thanks for your response Marion,

I am feeling good now (2weeks post op ) and have been walking a little each day. How long do u think I should wait before using the vibrogym?

Thanks again Mike

Hi Marion

Thought I would update you on my progress. I am now walking for 30 minutes each day. with a slight incline on part of that walk.
I am still in a sling, and feel a bit lopsided, but I am getting there, can't wait to be able to get into the pool.

If you are on the phone a lot pace up and down while you are talking. Movement increases your metabolism, which increases your calorie burning.

I hope I've helped you here but if there's other things you'd like to ask please don't hesitate.

Hi Mike, being just a week into your journey you do need to take it gently for about the first month. Providing you aren't sore or feeling light headed, it won't hurt you to have a gentle stroll each day either in the fresh air or on the treadmill. I would start off only doing a few minutes and gradually work up to doing about 15 - 20 minutes by the end of the fourth week. This might sound slow to you but your body has to heal and get used to your reduction in food intake. At about 4-5 weeks banded you can up the speed a bit and make your way up to 30 minutes by the end of the 6th week. By then you should be good to do 30 minutes at a moderate/brisk pace. You would also be ok to do other sports and exercises. Would you be likely to join a gym or get a personal trainer? I would recommend both if it's within your budget. I worked with a personal trainer 2-3 times a week while I was making my way to goal. I also walked probably 5-6 times a week for about an hour, around 6kms. People often expect too much of themselves and the band. I was controlling my food intake and doing all that exercise but I still lost at around 500-600gms a week. For most people the weight doesn't fall off in lumps! LOL Mind you men are better at losing as they carrying more muscle.

Weights would be a very good thing to do. Not only will they help you burn fat, they will also tone you, build more lean muscle mass, make you stronger and you'll feel great!

With any fitness regime, set small achievable goals on a weekly and monthly basis and write them down in a food and fitness diary. When you achieve them you will feel good and can move on to something a little more challenging.

If you work with a personal trainer they will help you to continually push yourself and they will motivate you to keep going.

Look at also adding incidental exercise to your day. Park at the back of the car park. Walk to work or the corner shop. Take the dog out. Climb the stairs instead of using the escalator ...

Hi Marion,

I have been reading through your thread and am impressed with your knowledge and support, that said could I please get your advice regarding an exercise program?

A little about me: I am a 24 year old male and live in tassie. I started at 133.3 and was banded last Tuesday. This mrning I weighed 127.8.

I know that I will have to take it slow for a while untill the band has settled. I would like to start a light walking program asap. I have a treadmill and vibration platform.l, that I can use (in the short and long term).

I actually have really liked exercise I have done in the past, and am looking forward to getting into a program.

My goal is to lose weight (durr LOL), tone and to feel more energetic and healthy.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mike

Hi all,

I would imagine that walking and light weight training would be the best exercises to do. I have recently bought a Wii Fit, which helps with exercising and improves your posture and core. I dont know if other people have done this. I bought it the other day thinking I can use it during the Optifast stage (my op is in 2 weeks), however it wouldnt let me use it as i was over 150kg....some incentive!!

Thanks for the very comprehensive answer Marion - there is alot here to keep me going for a while. Great advice and I think combined with the fill I had yesterday which I think has me pretty close to my sweet spot, I'll be on my way to shifting the kgs again. I'll check in regularly to let you know how I'm going and for more advice if thats ok. Thanks again.

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
In the long run think about how much a food has been processed. The more processing a food has generally the less good it is for us. Also highly processed foods tend to contain a lot of additives in the form of sugar, salt and other chemicals that our bodies have a very hard time processing. Fruit and veggies are unrefined carbs and have everything in them that our bodies need. Give your body a substantial serve of them each day plus some lean protein and good fats (eg olive oil) and you will be amazed at how good you will feel in a very short time.

5. whole body vibration machine. Yes they work on the same principle as the Gloria Marshall machines did. They are very good in a lot of ways. The help to trim and tone as they make the muscles fire at a high rate. BUT they DO NOT make you lose weight, cms yes but weight no. They also have other good effects such as often helping you to sleep better, feel more relaxed, make your lymphatic system work better, ease general aches and pains. But if you have any chronic medical condition you should seek advice from your medical practitioner before using one.

Well this has turned into War and Peace! LOL I hope it helps you and I'd love to hear if your weight loss gets back on track..Would also be nice to know your name if you don't mind putting it on here.

Take care

Marion

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
Another good thing about weight training is because it involves the use of a lot of muscles it raises your metabolism and keeps it higher for much longer than cardio. If you do a weight session in the morning your metabolism will still be at a higher level by late afternoon. Therefore you are continueing to burn calories at a higher rate.

3. Increase my protein intake. Wonderful! Try if you can to have a little protein at every meal. How many meals a day do you eat and at what times? How much do you have to eat at a meal? The Lean Dessert Protein will definitely help but you should have as wide a range of foods containing protein as you can. Protein is what the body uses to build muscle and it satisfied hunger for much longer. 1gm of protein is 4 calories and 1gm of carbs is 4.2 calories so with protein you get more feeling of fullness for your calories. Alcohol is 7 cals a gm and fat is 9 cals a gm so it's best to have as little of these as you can. Another good tip is to have something high in protein soon after a work out. The body will carry the protein to the muscles at a fast rate at that time. The protein will go to repair and build the worked muscles which develop tiny tears while you are training them. Therefore you end up with more muscle and the more muscle you have the more calories you burn.

4. Lower my carb intake. Yes, probably lower it but also change it for the better. Like me you are obviously a carboholic! LOL Carbs are a very necessary part of our food intake as without them we can't burn our fat stores. You just need to ensure they are the right kind of carbs. Try not to eat carbs that are white or refined eg white bread, white flour, white pasta, white rice plus cakes biscuits, pastry etc. I was brought up in the UK and us POMS love our stodgy carb and fat filled foods! But I have gotten used to having unfined carbs and really enjoy them. Use whole grain alternatives eg wholegrain pasta, wholegrain bread, brown rice, wholegrain flour etc.

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
Hi there, 15kgs in three months is good but I know what you mean. You are doing exactly what I did when I was banded, but it took me 5 months to lose the 15kgs. Then I had a 5-6 week plateau until I got myself into gear with both the food and the exercise. After that I lost about 500-600gms every week until I reached goal.

I'm so very glad that this thread has given you the motivation to step things up. I often wonder if it gets read as people don't post on it that often.

Ok let's review your list.

1. walk to work, 30 minutes 5 days a week. A superb idea! and I take it you'll be walking home afterwards? This on it's own will make a huge difference to your metabolism and therefore your weight loss. Start out at an easy to medium pace for the first week, then try going a little faster the second week. Set yourself little goals like if it takes you 10 minutes to get to a certain landmark, eg a church or school, try to get there in 9.5 minutes and then 9 minutes etc. Set yourself goals like "I'm walking to work in 30 minutes now but by the end of July I will do it in 28 minutes." Make the goals small and achieveable because if you make them too hard and don't succeed you may disappoint and discourage yourself.

2. Join the gym with my husband. Another great idea. Having someone to go with can be a great motivator. Cardio is the way to go if you want to burn fat but start out slowly and work your way up. Try intervals where you do 5 minutes at moderate speed and then 1 minute as fast as you can. As you get used to that decrease the time at moderate and increase the time at fast.

As far as I'm concerned weights are extremely important in a weight loss exercise regime. You don't have to worry about bulking up because women do not do that unless they take male hormones or steroids. Weight training will help you trim, tone, burn fat and build lean muscle. It is also very important in maintaining bone density in women and avoiding oesteoperosis (sp?).

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
Hi Marion
I'm 33 and I was banded 03.04.09 and was 150kg 2 weeks prior to the op. I'm now 135kgs and have been so for about 5-6 weeks now. I seem to have hit a plateau 1) because I need a fill and will have one this Saturday and 2) I'm now ready to admit that not exercising is having a major impact on my weight loss... I admit I've been a regular on these boards for a while now but was never ready to visit this thread... Well now I am and I'm serious about getting fit and kickstarting again! I stayed up until midnight last night reading through this thread and have found it amazingly helpful! I learnt so much in one night and have come up with a bit of a list of things I need to do so I can kickstart a fitness plan.

1)Start walking to work (about 30 min walk)5 days/week
2)Join the gym (with my husband) which we've planned on doing for ages but never really got motivated. I'm starting to sag a little and see a lot of loose skin. My problem areas are flabby arms, stomach and love handles. I plan to do alot of aerobic/cardio work like eliptical trainer, rower and treadmill? what do you think? What about weights? I'm also going to get a personal trainer once/week.
3) Increase my protein intake (gonna try the Lean dessert protein powder you recommend)as I know I'm not getting enough and am really struggling for breakfast ideas so a smoothie made out of this sounds yum!
4) lower my carb intake - this is very important as I eat more carbs than any other food group
5)I'm also going to purchase one of those whole body vibration machines as it seems to have worked for alot of people. I remember using similar equipment at Gloria Marshall back in the day - lol.

Would love your feedback. Thanks so much.

Hi Raelene, any time is good to start exercising. If you start when you optifast it will give you a good lead up to the op. Obviously you will then have a gap while you heal. You should be able to start light exercise around 2-3 weeks after the op. Within 4-5 weeks you should be able to do any exercise that you like.

Hi All,
just wanting to ask a question. When do you start exercising? Is it when you start fasting on optifast, or after you have healed from the operation?
interested to hear your feedback
thanks

There are many people for whatever reason who either prefer to excercise at home, or like myself have a dissability that make it difficult or near impossible to go to a gym.
I have been very happy to chat to Marion with regards to excersises that I can do with all my joint problems.
perhaps chatting to her sooner, might have saved this shoulder from a tear.

Nothing strange about it Lilly

It's here to encourage Bandits to exercise who don't want to or can't afford to go to a gym.

It's here to show fellow Bandits that they can exercise at home with very little or no equipment.

It's here to help and support Bandits in their weight loss journey.

It's definitely NOT here for people to make lame comments about.

This is the strangest thread.

"EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home."

as opposed to exercises that Bandits CANT do at home?? surely theres not that many and/or they are kinda obvious??

We gotta be wary of those star jumps that make us spontaneously implode if done within the walls of ones house.

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
I just wanted to let everyone know about hypoxi therapy. I know it's not a home exercise. But if you don't like to sweat too much and want to firm and tone your bum and thighs, it actually works.
It involves cycling while your lower body is enclosed a vacuum chamber. the initial package you buy is 12 visits. 3 times a week for 4 weeks you exercise for 30 minutes. It is supposed to get rid of cellulite but I think I need more than 12 sessions for that!!!
What did happen though is that I lost 33cm in total from my waist to my knees! 9 cm from my butt, 6 cm from my waist and even 3 cm from each knee.
I had bought a new pair of work pants just before I started. they were a perfect fit on my waist: not tight not loose. After the treatment they now slip down and even 2 weeks since i finished they are still loose, so I haven't put it back on either.
It is expensive: $650 for 12 sessions (plus one free trial)- check website for special offers. I think it was worth it for the difference it made and targeted the areas that have always been my problem.
I had reached a plateau with my weight loss and this helped kick start it ( I did also lose 2 kilos even though they don't say you will)
