Felice we have a girl in our group who was a nurse and her prior knowledge did help her but there is still a lot of theory that is not directly concerning the body systems. I'm sure you will be able to do it.

If you are going to get a heartrate monitor get a good one, like a Polar. Mine shows, on the workout mode, one little star for each 100 calories I've burnt. It makes me want to go on until the next start comes up.....and the next llllol.

I believe you can do the course part time. It's 8 weeks full time and it's very full on! I was supprised just how much it took out of me. In fact most our group went down with some kind of illness due to stress. The theory side of thing is HEAVY, having to learn all the bones, joints, muscles and what they do. Not to mention all the other systems in the body. It's tough! But I felt such a feeling of achievement when I completed it and passed!

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
Felice I can safely say you are doing well over 93bpm, have you considered getting a heartrate monitor watch and band. I love mine, it's such a motivator. To work out your maximum heart rate you take your age away from 220. EG my age is 53 so my maximum should be 167. The sensors on treadmills and other fitness machines are usually pretty naff. No way if you are doing 7km/ph at incline 12 would your heartrate be as low as 93. Mine would be in the 150/160 area.

I have asked Yahoo to make this thread sticky so it's immediately available to Bandits but they just keep saying Thank you for your feedback...........it's frustrating.

Hey Marion!

Wow we are so lucky to have you as a resource! I have another question!

When I am exercising what should I be aiming to get my heart rate up too? The Treadmill sensors are only reading it up to 93bpm - thats running at a speed of 7 incline of 12 (average 83 when walking) and although I sweat like Niagara Falls I have a niggling feeling that this isnt high enough (or maybe Ive been watching to much 'Biggest Loser'!)

Any thoughts on the matter are appreciated!

Love Felice

Hey Marion!

Was just wondering who you did your training with? Im looking at AIF for in the future (my goal is to work in an obesity clinic combining my nursing, mental health and addiction skills and I thought a background in fitness would be beneficial too)

Thanks!

Hi Cat, congrats on your band. Welcome to the lighter side! Both the treadmill and the recumbent bike are ideal machines to start your exercising on. If you are feeling well and don't have any pain I'd say in about a week you could sit on the bike and pedal on the lowest setting. If after a few days that doesn't cause you any problems then I'd say start doing a couple of minutes on the treadmill at about setting 3.5 - 4.

Yep you need to do both weight bearing and core strengthening exercises. Your core is basically your abs plus your chest and back. Core strengthening is when you use mainly your abs to provide the strength on do an exercise. These are things like crunches, leg lifts, the plank, sit ups etc. I will be putting more exercises on, I've been a bit slack over the last week. If you are able to give any of the exercises on this thread a go they will help you a lot.

I will try to get a few more exercises on tomorrow. Happy to help if you have any more questions.

Hi Marion,

This is such a wonderful thread. Thank you so much for starting it.

I was banded 5 days ago, so I'm only at the start of my journey. I haven't started any exercise yet. How long should I wait before I start some sort of exercise and what should I start with? I have a treadmill and recumbent exercise bike at home.

Also, I was talking to someone who told me I should be do core strengthening exercises. Of course, I have no idea what those are.

Any info you could give me would be great.

Thanks

Cat

Sorry, my keyboard froze!

If you do these arm exercises regularly your arm and upper body strength will slowly increase.

Jane ask any thing else you like I'm happy to help.

Marion I had no idea you had been given a hard time with regards to 'basking in the limelight'. Well girl you bask away. You deserve it just like every other person who puts there all into this journey and reaches their personal goal. How sad that people feel the need to tear each other down due solely to jeolousy. Pfft to them. Enjoy every moment of your life and be blimmin thrilled with you achievements. PS I ran 2 ks this morning and really felt I could have gone further. PPS Thanks for you advice I truly appreciate it from one who knows to one who knows not what she is doing lol see ya soon

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
As for other exercise, absolutely anything you do will help. Doing leg raises on the bed with the weights you mention would be great. Just start slowly and as you become accustom to them increase the reps or the weight. You can adapt a lot of the exercises I've mention to suit you. As your weight comes down you will be able to do more of them. Believe me any exercise in any form is better than none. Try having a couple of tins of beans or soup with you while you watch TV. Ever time an ad break comes on pick up the tins, hold them at shoulder level and then push them up above your head 3 or 4 times. Do it slowly and steadily, don't rush or jerk. Next break hold them infront of your boobs and then push them out to arms length infront of you, again do 3 or 4 to start. Next break hold them again infront of your boobs but this time move them out to the sides

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
Hi Jane, thanks for the kind words. It was one bandit in particular who seemed to take a dislike to me and a couple of others jumped on her bandwagon. Fortunately she doesn't seem to come here anymore.

I was BMI 43, 98kgs and 152cms when I was banded, I was 58kg at goal. I am 53, BMI 27 at the moment and about 63kgs as I have no fill and no restriction. This is because my pouch and esophagus have stretched and they need to rest before my surgeon decided if I need further surgery. Also add to this the fact that I had a bladder op 2 weeks ago, so I can't do any exercise for another 3-4 weeks. All I'm able to do is take my small dogs for a walk.

The walking is an extremely good idea either on the treadmill or outside. Set yourself a time each day to do it and get into a routine. 50 metres is great to start, I appreciate that is difficult for you with your excess weight and your bad knees. Maybe do 50 metres each morning for a week and then the next week try for 60 metres and so on. Be consistant as this will really help with your weight loss. When I was losing I walked almost every day. To start with I just went to the end of the road and back. Then around the block. Then around a larger block. I used to be beetroot red in the face and sweating from head to foot but I had achieved something! I gradually increased the distance I walked and changed from walking around the streets to walking along the sea front. Towards the end I was doing around 7-10kms a day!

So as you see tiny seeds huge things can grow or should I say from little steps kilometres can grow!

To be continued.......

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
p.s.

I also have 2 hernias - 1 on the belly button and another large one on the other side. So I have to be very careful as to how I bend. As sometimes when I bend down to pick something up I twist or catch the hernias and end up in agonizing pain for a while before it settles down. So any help in this would be greatly appreciated. I can't get the hernias or my knees operated on until I loose the weight. My left knee needs a reconstruction but hopefully will be less painful once I loose some of this weight.

Hi Marion,
I have just been reading this thread for the 1st time this morning. I think it would be very sad for other bandits to accuse you of basking in the limelight as you so call it. I think you should be totally proud of yourself for what you have achieved. I don't know what your BMI was before you started, but that doesn't matter. Anyone who is prepared to go under the knife by any standard should be proud, as like most of us who have tried anything and everything, this is the last resort for the majority of us. My BMI is nearly 74 so I have heaps to loose. I am 51 and my smallest I ever got was a size 16, but with yo yo dieting over the years my weight went up more each time I lost some of it.

I am getting banded on the 27th March, and was concerned as to when I should start exercising after the banding. My dietitian wants me to start on the treadmill which I already have for 5 minutes morning and afternoon. I said that 5 minutes will probably be too much for me, so I have said that I will walk distances instead, starting at probably 50 metres then work my way up slowly.

I cannot get down on the floor or ground at all, because at this stage I would never be able to get up due to my bulk and very bad knees, so for other bandits in the same position as my self, I will start doing some leg raises on the bed. Would this be acceptable Marion. Also I thought that to do a little resistance for the legs, that I would put 1 small can in a plastic carry bag, but use 2 bags with cans in it tie the bags together and place them over my ankles to do resistance training that way. Would this be ok Marion?? Or use something that is not too heavy. Thanks for any help. ...

Di, if you feel you could do that extra half km then go for it. But be very careful, make sure you have water and lots of it. Try not to run in the heat of the day.

When you have learnt about exercise from the bones up (literally) it makes a lot more sense. I'm going to start jogging/running when I'm allowed to.

Thanks Marion. Do you suppose its ok to try and go an extra half km tomorrow or are you suppose to just do the same thing for a while then up it. I felt like i could have gone an extra k today but wasnt sure how much to push it. I wasnt even very puffed although my legs felt like lead weights. I thought I would have another bash at it tomorrow and would try the 'biggest loser' style and just go till I drop or not?? Not sure!
