Hi Marion
The going for a walk makes sense, I usally jump straight into the shower as I am dripping with sweat, but a nice walk around the garden wouldn't hurt before the shower. I am 31 and got banded last friday 30/5/08 and just doing gentle walks at the moment.
I read a little about a plan youv'e drawn up, a copy would be great if you don't mind my email address is nicole.pjh@bigpond.com
thanks Nic |

Hi Nic, It really depends from person to person how soon after banding that you can exercise fully. I'd say you should be good withing 2-3 weeks. I was training with my personal trainer 2 weeks after banding. Some people may need longer if they experience more pain or are slower to recover.
Can I just give you a little tip about jumping into the shower after exercising. Let your body cool naturally, take a slow walk around the garden sipping some water. By doing this your metabolism will remain higher for longer and burn more calories. By jumping into the shower you bring your metabolism down faster and decrease the burn.
It is also difficult to say what your heartrate should be. How old are you? I can give you a rough idea if I know that.

Hey Marion
Can you tell me how soon after surgery you can get back to exercising other than walking, I am quite enjoying an exercise similar to step aerobics which is on the Nintendo Wii and after 30 mins I jump straight into the shower and feel great for the day. Also do you know what your heart rate should get up to and for how long it should be up there to burn fat. thanks Nic |

Sorry I didnt reply marion I couldnt find it.. I live on the mid north coast NSW.
I actually decided last night that once I am healed I will go to the gym and get a personal trainer. I think I will need some weight training to get toned up somewhat. So cardio and weights will be what I am looking for I think.
Thanks for the reply, it is getting easier to do my walking and yes by spring I think I will have more courage to get out there and have a trot. We have some beautiful beaches around here so I will take your advice and use them to my advantage.
Thanks again
Trish. |

Hi Trish (unzippin)
There is a slight difference in walking on the treadmill and outside. Outside you tend to alter your pace up and down frequently and your muscles are used more, especially if you walk on grass or sand. You burn more calories walking on grass or sand.
It's great that you have progressed so far on the treadmill. Keep going and changing the speed and incline up and down during your walk. Maybe by the time spring comes you will confident enough to start walking outside.
I can't remember where you live?

Marion I have a walking machine. I dont feel comfortable walking outside.. plus for some reason I never find time to do it but I can find time to do 30 mins on the treadmill... is there any difference. I do the up and down one not just flat walking. It alters my pace and adds some slight incline into the walk.
Actually I am quite chuffed 3 weeks ago I couldnt do 5 minutes at a flat slow pace and I had to get off now I do 30 minutes with different speeds and incline...I am berry clever! |

Hi Jodi, thank you so much for your lovely post. I really hope that the surgery you are going to have will work just great for you.
You have done it once and I'm sure with this help you will succeed again. Do that walking until you feel upto doing other exercise at home. A lot of Bandits don't seem to realise that just 10 or 15 minutes of these kind of exercises each day can make all the difference. If they combine that with 30 minutes walk they will see a difference in a couple of weeks.

| Hi I Got There wonderful to hear that you have had such great success with your band and in your maintanance of your weightloss you deserve to bask in all your limelight and you informetion is invaluable supportive and encouraging. I have not had my procedure done yet i will be having the gastric sleeve but either way i think they both work well, what i wanted to say about working out in the privacy of your own home is that about 5 years ago i was well over 100kgs and couldnt bare the thought of going somewhere to work out so i started walking and then when my fitness was a little better I started doing little strength excersises at home I built myself a little step from the wood that my fridge was sitting on so i could do step and i used my food cans of various weights to work my arm muscles and used my longe and kitchen chairs to do my pushups |

Hi Felice!
There are tons of exercises you can do beside straight forward crunches. Do you get the same pain if you do oblique crunches? One of the best ab exercises is extended leg lifts.
If you are actually feeling it grating on bone then it would probably be wise to mention it to your specialist.
I doubt if you will do damage but you never know.
Email me on grandbear54@hotmail.com if you want me to explain any other ab exercises.

Hey Marion!
I have a question that I thought your PT knowledge could help with!
I know that surgical implants are extra strong etc and are designed too handle alot of wear and tear.
BUT Im abit worried cos my port is placed at my Xiphoid process and when I do my (upper) abdo work out I can really feel it grating on the bone. And it hurts more than just the rest of my muscles.
I only do 80 "sit ups" total per day.
Do you think that repetitive work will damage either the port or my muscle? If I avoid the specific exercises that cause pain will I still manage to obtain a good core / abdo strength?
Sorry for all the questions! I thought you may have an opinion on it :-)
Hope you are well!

Hi Tracey!
I got mine from Rebel Sport and it was on sale at $100. There were other ones that were more expensive but I wasnt in the position to spend that much! And Im not technologically advanced enough to understand some of the extra features!
I am sure that you'd be able to get heart rate monitors cheaper but I was so eager that I just got the brand Marion suggested :-)And Ive had no probs with it :-)
A fantastic (pink) addition to my (pink) exercise ensemble!Especially motivating too, now that I have no exercise equipment!

Hi Michy, the following exercises have the same effect as the tricep dips but the tricep dips have more impact as you are bearing the weight of your body on your arms, the further out your legs are the more weight is taken by your arms. If you are having neck pain and headaches I wouldn't do the bench dips. Maybe in a few months time when you are a few kilos lighter you could give them another try and see if you can do them then without the pain.
The Bench dips exercise is for the triceps. Also if you get one of those stretchy resistance bands, they don't cost much, you can do these exercises.
TRICEP PULL-DOWNS
Loop the band over something stable above your head, hold onto the ends or wrap them around your hands. Stand with your feet hip width apart, shoulders back and tummy muscles on. Lock your arms into your sides and keep them there. Only move from your elbows, pull the band down until your fist touch your thighs breathing out as you go. Count to 2 and slowly bring your arms up breathing in as you come up. You must keep your shoulders back during this exercise and not rock on your feet.
STRAIGHT ARM TRICEP PULL DOWNS
Set yourself up in the same way but, instead of locking your arms to your sides, hold them straight out at shoulder height. Keeping them straight, bring your arms down until your fists reach your thighs, breathing out as you go down. Count 2, raise your arms back to shoulder
level breathing in as you go up. Once again your shoulders should be kept back and you should not sway around.
Start by doing 3 sets of 3-4 reps and work up gradually to 3 sets of 8-10 reps. |

Michy here, I love all the exercise you mention to do at home and am able to do most of them no problem. The only one I really have trouble with is the elbow dips. I have alot of trouble with my neck and I find when i do this it put alot of strain on my neck and then it ens up going out and next thing i've got a whopping headache. Is there anything else I could be doing beside the dips?? I have tried many times to do them and i can do them but not without the consequences.

Hey guys!!
Just wanted to mention that the heart rate monitor that marion encouraged me to buy is fantastic! It gives me so much motivation and control over the level of exercise intensity that I am doing. Definitely a go-er if anyones thinking of buying one!!

Hi Lisa, Yes it would be fine to do weights one day and cardio the next but make sure you have one day a week when you just rest.
I'm so glad that you and Marg were happy to find this thread. I have asked Yahoo to stick it to the top of the front page but they don't seem to want to answer me.

Hi Marion, Thanks so much for all that you are doing to help us bandits along. I have just had my first fill today and am now ready to get full on serious about shifting these kilos. Some of you may think 'hey wern't you serious when you had the op?', well yes I was, but I also decided that the first 6 weeks post op were primarily for healing...weightloss was secondary. Now I'm working out my committments and trying to sort out when and what types of exercises to do and I find this thread..talk about an answer to my prayer! I haven't got time to go to the gym, a kinder kid, an 88yo (who requires offsite therapy) and of course my 55yo boy ( who just 'needs') preclude me from a structured exercise regime, and all I have at home is the exercise bike (boring). So my question is this (knew I'd get there eventually)..Marion you said not to do the same exercises everyday as this doesn't help with muscle repair etc. How about doing the same exercises each time but alternating them with a day of cardio? (anything, as long as I don't have to spend everyday on the bike).
Thanks for all your help and I've got this thread on my favourites list. Look forward to more postings.
