Hi Debbie
I am sure Marion will be on here at some stage to answer your question but in the mean time it may help to put an ice pack on the area that is painful. Try to keep it on for around 20 mins. A pack of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel would be perfect.
Cheers

Hi everyone
I've been watching some of that cruddy daytime TV in the mornings lately and saw an ad for the Mountain Bread Cookbook and decided to buy one online ... I searched for it tonight and it can be freely downloaded here:
http://www.mountainbread.com.au/UserFiles/PDF/Moun tainBreadCookbook.pdf
Could definitely be worth a look as I really enjoy Mountain Bread these days having given up bread, but you get over plain old wraps sometimes.

The back muscles are also very important in core stability and you need to work them in tandem with your abs.

Hi Nina, the obliques are part of your core and to work them you would do twisting motions eg bicycle crunches. What I think you are sayings how do you know you are working your abs? Your abs are one long slab of muscle that runs from under your bust down too your lower belly. When a muscle fires it all fires not just part of it. So when you hear people talking about upper, middle or lower abs it's misleading. It's one muscle but certain exercise will work some areas harder than others. Crunches, if done correctly, will work the upper section more than the lower. The plank will work the lower section harder than the upper section, as will leg raises.

Hi Marion and thanks for the reply. How do you tell the difference when you are working the core muscles instead of only the "outside" obliques? I'm confused...

Hi Nina, any kind of crunches will strengthen you core. If you have a fit ball it's best to do them on that. Also sit ups and leg raises. If you don't know how to do these post and I'll explain in more detail. There are heaps of core exercises.

Hi Marion,
I love this thread :-) Question: How do I strengthen my Core muscles? I'm not into Pilates or Yoga and I know these two help. Any suggestions? Cheers :-)

I GOT THERE
Lemmings are stupid airhead girls who do what each other do. For example, if 1 girl has a particular bag, the next day the whole group has them. Hence, if 1 falls off the cliff, they all do it. They reside in school playgrounds and in shopping plazas. HeHeHe |

Hi Deb, bump just means bringing that particular thread back onto the front page.
Just a little heads up, typing in all capitals is equivalent to shouting...lol
Well you are so lucky to have a heated indoor pool, wish I did! The workout you described is definitely very good. Exercising in water is very beneficial and because the water supports you and is warm it takes the pressure off your joints.
Once your scars are healed you can head back into the water. I would start with just the walking and some of that gentle doggy paddle or breast stroke.
When you are full recovered I would start doing some gentle walking outside the pool. Just go to the end of the road and back to start with and slowly increase it. As your weight goes down you will find the pain in your joints will decrease. Keep coming into this thread and tell me how you are doing and I can suggest other things you can do as you get smaller and stronger.

HI GOT THERE: I HAVE JUST GOTTEN BANDED A WEEK AGO AND EVEN THO I KNOW I SHOULD NOT DO TOO MUCH JUST YET I AM PREPARING MY EXERCISE PLAN IN MY HEAD NOW SO WHEN THE TIME COMES I WILL BE UP AND READY. I AM 54 AND NOT VERY FIT PRESENTLY AND I WAS PLANNING TO USE MY HEATED INDOOR POOL AS MY EXERCISE AREA. MY HUBBY HAD IT INSTALLED ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I AM A WATER BABY AND LIKE TO EXERCISE IN WATER. PRIOR TO BANDING I WAS DOING 1 HR IN THE POOL AT LEAST 4 DAYS A WEEK, THE HOUR CONSISTS OF 20 MINS WALKING IN WATER GOING AROUND THEN REVERSING WALKING AGAINST THE FLOW, THEN I DO 20 MINS OF A COMBINATION OF JOGGING OR STAR JUMPS OR PUTTING MY HANDS ON MY HIPS AND SWISHING ABOUT LIKE A WASHING MACHINE. AFTER THAT I GET THE NOODLES, ONE IN EACH HAND AND WITH ARMS OUTSTRETCHED I DO 100 PLUNGES INTO THE WATER IN 5 MINUTES. I FINISH OFF BY SOME GENTLE SWIMMING BREAST STROKE OR DOG PADDLE WITH MY BUM IN THE AIR (LOOKS STRANGE BUT I CAN FEEL IT WORKING) TO WORK ON MY TUMMY MUSCLES. I HAVE ARTHRITIS IN MY JOINTS AND ANY EXERCISE ON DRY LAND AT THIS POINT WOULD KILL ME. AFTER THIS EXERCISE I FEEL REALLY DAMN GOOD AND MOBILE AND IT SETS ME UP NICELY FOR THE DAY AFTER SLIPPING INTO THE WARM WATER AT 6.AM.
AM I ACTUALLY DOING ANYTHING OF BENEFIT AND CAN YOU SUGGEST OTHER THINGS THAT I COULD BE DOING TO IMPROVE MY FITNESS.
BTW JUST A MATTER OF CURIOSITY, I SEE PEOPLE WRITE B U M P WHAT IS THIS WHAT DOES IT MEAN? YAHOO VIRGIN HERE, WELL ALMOST.
THANKS
DEB |

I bought a heart rate monitor similar to that of Polar for $30 from Aldi, it has a chest strap and shows heart rate, calories burned, fat burned, fitness levels and all sorts of other things and it is also a watch, so far so good.

You guys have all done so well and I am back to square one. I musn't dwell though just have to get on with it.
Cheers

Hi Jen
We seem to be on the same wavelength today :-)
There are many different models with varying prices. Mine is a Polar F6 which I love. If you have a look on Ebay it might give you an idea of prices or google it as there are several good on-line stores which sell them. I think I bought one from Athletic Edge On-line or a name similar to that.
Cheers
