You are welcome Tracie and Sharon. Being a personal trainer it's difficult for me to give people advice without seeing them and talking to them one on one.

When you walk in the street, try if you can, to look up and enjoy your surroundings. This makes things less of a chore. I don't know where you live, but if there is a beach front or park than you can drive to it will make a more interesting walk.

I too am not a veggies person but I eat a lot of different ones now than I used to when I was big. The thought of avocado was yuck but now I adore it!

With the exercise, the crushed disks are caused through your excess weight? Hopefully if we can get you losing again it will help your balance. My balance was awful when I was big and I fell over a few times. My ankles have always been skinny and they didn't like holding up such a weight! In a way I was lucky because the only lasting problems I've got from being obese is a dodgey right knee. Even that's not too bad once it's warmed up.

Sorry I fogot to answer your questions. I use the treadmill as I have 3 crushed disks which make me unstable. I fell over in the street walking the dog 3 times last year! So as he is older now, I just walk him round the local streets and top up on the treadmill where I can hold on. And yes, I look down all the time to avoid even the smallest stone which can topple me!

I will try to increase the eliptical time - it had handles to hold on to so it's good.

I have measured and I lost 27cm in all which I am thrilled about, but I was hoping the scales would have gone down more. I have not changed clothes size at all!

I see your meaning with the food. I made a huge pot of turkey soup with the carcus after xmas, filled with veggies, but I was saving it for winter. Perhaps I should have it now and make more later. I'm not good at veggies, so any disguise for them is good!

I can't thank you enough for taking such an interest in (soon to be) little old me. I feel so inspired now. Thank you.

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
Hope this isn't boring you! LOL

As for your exercise regime......again our bodies get used to a specific set of exercises and we need to constantly change and increase the time and intensity we work at.

Shake things up. Can you increase the length of time you walk the dog? Do you walk briskly? Do you look at the ground when you walk or look at your surroundings. Where do you walk? Around the neighbour hood or along the seafront, along the dog beach, up and down hills? Do you hold yourself upright and actively suck your tummy in? Did you know that walking on road/path burns less calories than walking on grass, dirt or sand?

The eliptical (cross trainer) is an excellent piece of equipment.......can you do more than 10 minutes? Did you know that it burns twice the calories for the same length of time that you use the treadmill?

The treadmill is a good piece of equipment too but your main walking is better done outside. Use your treadmill if the weather is bad or as a warm down tool.

The weight bearing exercises you do, has someone shown you how to do them correctly? Have you read all the exercises further back on this thread?

So what I'm saying is keep your body guessing. Change your calorie intake, eat small frequent meals to keep your metabolism up, increase your protein, decrease(or eliminate) your intake of refined carbs. Change your exercise regime frequently and strive to do things for longer and greater intensity.....even if it's in baby steps.

Well I hope this will help you and it didn't bore the pants off you.

Let me know how you go.

Re:EXERCISES for Bandits to do at home. Reply to this message
It is a good idea to keep the refined carb content of your evening meal as low as possible. This means try not to eat ordinary potatoes, white rice, white pasta. If possible stick to lean protein in the shape of a steamed or baked fish fillet or chicken breast or thigh. Add lots of steamed veggies without butter. Go for as much colour on your plate as possible as this will ensure a wide range of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. Eg carrots, corn, red capsicum, tomatoes, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato, onions etc.

If you must eat rice or pasta make sure it is made with wholewheat flour and have brown rice.

The reason not to have refined carbs in the evening is that they convert straight to energy. As most of us just sit and relax in the evening this energy supply is not used and is converted on into fat.

The body uses its food supply in a specific order being alcohol, carbs, fats, protein. If you increase your protein in take and reduce refined carbs you will be satisfied longer. Protein also lends it's self to the production of lean muscle mass. (continued)

Of course I don't mind you asking, it's why I asked for this thread to be made sticky so I can help other bandits.

I have notice that what you are experiencing is the same for a lot of other bandits. You lose well for the first few weeks but then it tails off. Have you taken your measurements at all? Even though you haven't lost weight for a couple of months I bet your measurements have gone down.

Our bodies are amazing machines, they adapt themselves to their input. The first few weeks of less calories shocks the system and you lose quite fast. Then the body starts to compensate and the weight loss stops. But I would bet anything your body fat percentage has gone down and your lean muscle mass has gone up.

Ok to get the weight moving you need to shake things up. You may think I'm mad but I don't think you are eating enough in general and protein in particular.

Here are my suggestions for changing your intake

Breakfast - All Bran, half a diet yoghurt, small handful of cashews or half a banana, skim milk.

Mid Morning - 4 Cruskets, ham, tomato, cucumber, onion, small amount of fat free mayo

Lunch - Home made veggie soup or small tin of tuna/salmon with diet coleslaw. One piece of fruit or half banana

Mid Afternoon - Protein smoothie

Dinner - Fish or Chicken with low fat sauce, steamed vegies and a piece of sweet potato. WW ice cream with berries or a small bunch of grapes.

As you can see I've worked with what you are eating now but added and subtracted from it. Cup a soups have virtually no nutritional value at all, much better to make a big pot of soup with as many vegies as possible and freeze it in quantities enough for a couple of days.

Breakfast should be a more solid meal to set you up for the day.

Cruskets and lean ham are good but you need to have more bulk with them.

Your intake is very high in carbs but light on protein. Add a daily protein shake mid afternoon to get over that low period before dinner. (continued)

Hi Marion,

I don't know you but I have seen that you give good advice and have achieved what we are all trying to achieve, so I hope you don't mind me asking a question.

I am 12 weeks banded. I lost 6kg in the first 2 weeks and 2 the following week and NOTHING since. I have had one fill (6ml in a 12ml band) with another due next week.

I weigh 108kg. I have gone from almost no exercise, to 20mins walking the dog, 15mins on the treadmill, 10 mins on the eliptical, 40 crunches, 100 reps with small hand weights, 40 steps on each leg on the stepper, 5 x days a week.

I know it is not a huge exercise regime and I am increasing it regularly, but compared to what I was doing before the band it's good.

I eat a small bowl all bran with soy skim milk for breakfast.
Cup a soup for morning tea.
4 x Cruskets with 2 slices ham for lunch.
Meat and veg and rice or pasta to fit on a bread and butter plate for dinner.
Tiny amount of fruit and yougurt (diet)or WW ice cream for dessert.

Lots of water.

Have you any idea why I am not losing weight?

Thanks
Cheryl

I've never really done optifast so I can't say. Tony Ferguson shakes and soups are nice and quite satisfying. What time did you have the shake? If it was 7am then you'd expect to be hungry by 10.30-11.00am. That is why it's good to have 5-6 mini meals a day.

Hey Marionn

While I'm waiting for my BSN protein shakes to arrive, I've gone down to my local chemist and grabbed some of their generic brand shakes to use as a brekky substitute. My local chemist stocks optifast and their own generic brand. they tell me the two are essentially the same - with the same actibve ingredients.

Do you, or does anyone else, have any experience or knowledge of these shakes? Are they effective? I had one this morning (my first one) for brekky. It was banana flavoured, and nice. I was getting pretty hungry by 11am though! Would this be the same for the BSN shakes? I should also tell you that I did a big walk this morning, after having the shake - so I would have burnt off a fair bit of energy (especially in this heat).

Thanks
Simone

Hi Marion

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I totally plan on upping my excersise in combination with the shakes. I've had a bit of an emotional year, and i've found myself doing some emotional eating for the first time since being banded (and now, 18 months on, I know all the tricks on getting round my band - which is terrible!). It's funny how you can get complacent with the band, thinking that because you've lost a bunch of weight and feel good, that you're immune to putting weight back on again. NOT TRUE!! It's a constant battle to be vigilant and stick to good eating practises, or else that weight can creep back on, no problems!

2009 marks a new year to kickstart the weightloss and put those good and healthy eating practises into being :)

Thanks
Simone :)

Hi Simone,

The BSN shake would make a good breakfast. It is what is in the shake that keeps you full longer. The body burns it's fuel in a particular order which is alcohol, carbs, fat and lastly protein. Therefore it is the last to be burnt and remains in your system longest. But in the long run it comes down to calories consumed and calories burnt. You will only lose the weight if you reduce the calories coming in and increase the calories burnt.

The way I used to eat when I was losing was to have 5-6 mini meals a day. This can be hard at first as you have to make sure you take snacks out with you. But you quickly get used to it and your metabolism works at a higher rate.

Hi Marion

Just with regards to the BSN protein shakes I've been recommended by a few folks on these boards, I was wondering if you could please shed some light on how they work? I'm planning on using them as a meal replacement for brekky. Will they really assist in helping shed some kgs? How so - do they boost metabolism as well as replace a meal? How do they help kep you full if they go straight through the band, as they are a liquid? Any info would be great, as I'd like to maximise my weight loss. I've put back on 6 precious kgs since hitting my lowest weight from banding. I did get down to 85kgs, now I'm at 92!!

Thanks and Happy New Year!
Simomne :)

Hi Phoebe

I had to Google the C25K program to see what you were talking about, I haven't heard of it before so haven't tried it but I thought I'd just add the website address here so people know what you are referring to.

I have now lost 15 kgs and was banded in November. Weight loss has sowed a bit though so I have planned to start on the C25K program to start jogging.

Has anyone else tried this. I would love to hear inspirational stories that I can use ;)

There is a Stay Healthy in Hay Street, Perth and I believe there are other branches around too. They tend to charge about $41 whereas other places are usually over $50. It is cheaper at Supplement Den but then you have to add postage.

Re:Supplements

Yes I've used Lean Dessert Protein for about 2 years and it's yummy. It comes in Choc Fudge, Choc Coconut, Banana Creme, Banana Nut Bread (my fav!), Creamy Vanilla and Cinnamon Roll. You can use it as a shake, a smoothie, add it to porridge, custard and yoghurt. I've even used it in making a cheesecake.

It's about 120 cals a serve and very low in fat and carbs. All the flavours are nice and they don't have the yucky after taste that some do. The two places I've found it cheapest is Supplement Den and Stay Healthy.

I'm don't think there is a Perth stockist or if there is they are more expensive because Marion in Perth gets it from Brisbane, could be wrong though. If you check those other threads you will see where Marion gets it from.

Reposting my post from the two threads mentioned in my previous posts.

I've been converted to the Lean Dessert Protein as a result of the feedback from Marion and others. I always have two different flavours in my pantry now, much more economical than by Tony Ferguson, Celebrity Slim, Optifast etc sachets.

Prior to switching to Lean Dessert Protein Shakes I never ate breakfast but drank breakfast instead because my band is usually tight in the morning, I was having TF, Celebrity Slim shakes but now I have a Lean Dessert shake for breakfast every morning.

When the Lean Dessert Protein Shakes were first delivered I was amazed at how huge the plastic jars are that they come in, in the advert they don't look so big - 600 grams per jar.

Lean Dessert Protein Shakes can be purchased from The Supplement Den located in Brisbane, details below.

www.thesupplementden.com. au
Alternatively you can phone 1800 111 445 or 07 3209 1900

I have the Lean Dessert Protein Shakes for breakfast indefinitely because my band is tight in the morning so shakes are easier to get down and remain down. I have to take medications with food and my doctor has told me any shake is a good substitute for food when taking medication.

Hi Marion, Simone here agian :)

Would you recommend the protein shakes you just mentioned, over the opti, tony ferguson or the musashi shakes? I need to kickstart my wieghtloss again, as a few kilos have crept back on! Also, would you say breakfast would be the ideal meal to replace, as opposed to lunch or din-dins?

How long can I do this for, like, a month or so only - or indefinitely?

Thanks M
Simone :)

It's about 130 calories for one scoop and it has over 20gms of protein in each scoop. You can make it with water or low fat milk. I sometimes whiz it up in the blender with Hilo and a banana, this is a good healthy breakfast.
