Hey Minnie, Is your op tomorrow. Best of luck, just remember even if you feel like c r a p the road to recovery is reasonably quick. Where are you having your surgery? Keep us posted on how it all goes. Also I refused to have opti after the op because I hated it while I was on it, much prefer to hae yummy soups and different flavours than that yucky stuff. Good luck....
Libbi, You have given me lots of nice soup ideas to try. Now that I feel good I am happy to cook and experiment with different things like you have mentioned. This all gets so much easier once you feel well. Have had a few people ask me if I am loosing weight so thats a bit exciting, not only are the scales moving but its starting to be noticable. So excited. |

Hi Libbi,
Ha Ha... Yes, it is crazy to worry about half a slice of toast! That's probably 'half a point' in old Weight Watchers language. NOTHING! Thank about the past, pre-band... a slip up (for me) might have been an extra bowl of pasta, or half a block of chocholate!
It's weird how differently we can eat though... I would never have been satisfied with half a slice of toast since having my op. I can always eat two slices, no worries. That is why I keep getting nervous about how much longer my good luck is going to continue. My surgeon is certainly not putting in any more fill, and is still warning me that he might take some OUT if I continue to regurgitate too much, as this can increase the risk of the band slipping, which I do not want. But I am eating way more than I should be able to already, such as last night a normal slice of quiche and a BIG crunchy salad. I was not stuffed full... just mildly satisfied, and had to restrain myself from searching for food later. I guess the difference to pre-band is that pre-band I would have had twice the amount of quique, and probably would have eaten food after as well. So it's all relative. Anyway, keep up the good work,
Amanda |

Thanks so much, Libbi, you have given me lots of ideas. 2 days to go and I am getting excited about it. I have stocked up on soups like WW pumpkin and potato, Velish and also (don't laugh) some babyfood. I thought that would be about the size of portion I'll be able to cope with. My kids still live at home, but at 19 and 21 shop and cook for themselves, so I only have to worry about my husband and myself. I'll let you know how it all went once I'm back home.

Amanda, so good to hear how you are progressing, and that you're maintaining well. I'm guessing I might have put on a couple of kgs (shall weigh at the doctor tomorrow)- I'm grabbing for the sweet things, but it could be my imagination. Perpetual guilt for us dieters! I still eat only small meals, but suddenly find I can almost eat a whole slice of toast for breakfast instead of the usual half (and half an hour later). Thought that might be the beginning of the upward spiral so shall see about an adjustment. Yes, I know it's pathetic letting half a slice of toast govern my life! Are you still having adjustments or sticking with what you have already?
I haven't moved up to the new Curves programme yet, although people say it gives them an extra workout. I don't have the mental strength to cope with new instructions just now!

Welcome, Minniemaus. You have done so well on Optifast! I lost a miserable 2.5 kg over 10 days. Don't be tempted to think you can do it on Optifast alone and cancel the operation (just joking)! I'm sure you've read the posts about not worrying about the operation - it's a life-changing decision and the best of luck for your surgery.
Perhaps you've read back and seen some suggestions for the liquid phase. My pre-op. manual doesn't mention Optifast for after the operation, rather soup with lots of goodies in it, blended so that you can suck it through a straw (if necessary).
If you're cooking for other people, they could have curry-flavoured chicken or seafood with vegetables (the bought liquid mixes are handy, even if they are full of fat) while you blend yours to make a light curry soup with extra stock and yoghurt or light sour cream. You can do the same with the shop pasta mixes too. Combining the curry or pasta mixes with prawns and veges is really delicious and of course you can blend in rice or pasta. As you move on to the next stage you can make the mix less liquid. I think the idea is to get a fair bit of protein to fill you up (I draw the line at blending red meat into a soup mix, but I suppose blended minestrone would taste ok.
I became absolutely addicted to avocado soup, avocado with chicken stock, garlic, onion (if you like) and some yoghurt or light cream (I had it cold). Just heaven! And there's Amanda's cauliflower soup with brie, or even a blue cheese like stilton melted in. Forget about the boring clear broths! And now's the time for delicious pumpkin soup with extra blended veges and some cumin and nutmeg. Good luck, and keep us posted after your op.

Hey Sara, You have the same starting weight as me only you have an extra 5cm in height to carry it on. Sounds like you have had a really bad time health wise, so hopefully this will all go smoothly for you. Just do lots of research so you know what to expect.
Amanda, I think you are the "Poster lap bander". I only hope that I can be as successful as you have been both weight wise and with the way you can eat everything just in small amounts. Which surgeon did you go through. |

Hi Sara,
What a tough time you've had.... no wonder you felt depressed for a while. Is your baby ok? It's great that you're looking at doing something for yourself and something for your health. Personally, I feel like the band has been an absolute life saver. I never would have lost the weight, as it got just too much to lose, and my energy was so low. The early days of liquids and musies soom a sistant memory, and I eat normally, without having to restrict certain foods. I do eat less than I used to, but still a decent amount, so it is not obvious to others that I am any different to anyone else. I wish you all the best.
Kind regards,
Amanda |

Hey Slaz
Thats great that you only have approx 6 weeks to wait. From my first info session to my sugery was 3 months and let me tell you it felt more like 3 years. Just use the time to get your head in the right place because it really is a big thing to get your mind around. I found that it was all I thought about day and night. Can I ask you what your stats are? Keep me posted on how its all going.
Amanda that soup sound yum. Might try to make it soon. |

Hi everyone,
I'm also new at this, but have been reading your supportive posts whenever I felt hopeless. I started with optifast 12 days ago at 105kg, 172cm, BMI 35. Have since lost 7 kg. My surgery is on Thursday, 4 days from now and I am a little nervous about it. I am getting a little sick of optifast, but hanging in there. What is the liquid stage like post-op, still optifast or other liquids like clear soups? |

| yes, the liquid stage seems to really drag on, and i don't know about you, but i got sooooo hungry! I found that eating more protien really seemed to help,. so try really well blended (and strained) meat or even cheese based soups. The cauliflour & bree soup was a real winner: one cauliflower, boiled in chicken stock, then add one wheel of bree (skin off). Yum! |

| Hi Amanda, Yes I hope I am over the worst of it. Really starting to feel good now. Just glad that side of it is all over. The build up to surgery just takes forever and takes up so much of your thinkings. So so glad thats all behind me now. Full steam aheaed now to the skinny me. Looking forward to getting off the liquid stage and then the mushies so can live a little more normal. Although each day I am weighing myself and the scales just keep moving down so thats enough to keep me excited about it all. Go back to have all my dressing removed tomorrow which I am excited about. Still taking panadol each morning but finding I am not needing another dose all day which must mean I am getting better |

Terratime,
Well done, you are over the worst of it - touch wood! And such great results early on are very motivating indeed. Keep up the painkillers, and relax as much as you can. All that waiting must seem like a distant past now, and you must be looking forward to the heathier, smaller you to come!
Cheers,
Amanda |

Hi Libbi,
I'm still here. Basically maintaining for the past 5 months, give or take a kg up and down. Every time it is up I panic, yet somehow over the month it comes back off again. This is the real beauty of the band. I am still not relaxing about it, and do have to be relatively careful about not overeating totally fattening food, but I am certainy not 'dieting'. Also, have been totally slack about exercise the past 5 months since breast opp, and somehow still maintaining. Crazy! I have made an appointment to go back to curves in a week for their new training thing, but had a weigh and measure, and accorsing to them haven't gained kgs or cm's so that's good despite my slackness. So the band is really working. I keep wondering whether I'll maybe lose a little more once I start excercising again....? How are you going?
Cheers & thanks for asking after me,
Amanda x |

Thinlizzie - have you become 'Wedge', or I am just totally confused?! You really have a battle with your genetic history and good on you for making this decision, and not letting it get the better of you. What do your family have to say about your decision - perhaps you could get a 'bulk' (!) discount if they went ahead with the operation too (or a spotter's fee!).
I remember other people reporting that their weight soared when they had to reduce exercise because of injury. All I can manage is Curves two or three times a week (I say 'manage', because I find exercise so boring, but at least Curves is quick). How much weight do you expect to lose? It should certainly help your pain.
Terra, wonderful to hear that everyday is getting better. I think some readers might have been quite nervous to read about the pain, but it's worth it considering your weight loss already.
Great to have everyone's reports on their losses (and those of friends). When I first found this site (thank you, Gabs, wherever you are) I went through everone's post, adding up all the weight loss. Some were really fast (especially the men), some slow like me, but the time goes really quickly.
Amanda, how are you going? Now we have the challenge of not putting it on again. Sometimes, because I've been buying tighter clothes, I feel as though I haven't lost any weight at all!

Its amazing how much better I am feeling everyday. The worst thing is the shoulder pain. Feel like I must have had a shoulder reconstruction rather than a lap band. Clothes are already starting to loosen up so thats making it all worth it. Just looking forward to getting over the liquid and mushies phase so that I have some sort of normality and should be totally well by then. But hey even though I have had a rough week I have no regrets (wasn't saying that this time last week). When are you having your surgery??? |

| Hey just wanted to say how much better I am feeling today. I am 1 week post op and would not wish my last week on anyone. Was much worse than expected but now really started to feel good. Still got a little shoulder pain but each day it gets that little bit better. Hoping it will be gone by the end of the weekend. Also only sore around the port site now and internally I dont feel so sore. On the upside I am now 5.3kgs lighter than 3 weeks ago (2 weeks opti and 1 post op). Not at all hungry but still looking forward to finishing the liquid phase. |

Hi all,
Hey Libbi thanks for the compliment but I'm not so sure I'm in 'good condition'; I feel like I am 100 years old! My BMI is ~32 (86kg, 164 cm), I'm 46 with 3 teenaged kids to wear me out. Although the reasons I am having the op are numerous, the primary one is to relieve pressure from my back which I broke in 8 places last year falling down concrete stairs. I have struggled with my weight all my life and have managed to keep it under control via rigorous extreme exercise(2 hours + a day!) and life long dieting (yoyo). My injury was 11 months ago and it's starting to look as though the injuries and associated pain will be life long. It is going to limit the amount of exercise i can do in the longer term, especially walking, which is my exercise love. So I figured lap band and gentle exercise (pool based) will help optimise my ability to get my weight within noraml range and relieve the weight pressure on my back. Since the injury I have put on 12 kg and I am usually reasonably sensible with my diet, but I have 2 morbidly obese sisters (140kgs plus), my other 2 sisters struggle daily to maintain their weight, and both my parents had diabetes 2 and weight problems.... my genetics are screaming at me to do something now before I end up in real trouble.
Thanks for the dietary advice. I will work your ideas into the next 10 days> Wow, I can't believe it is so soon. |

Thinlizzy, you must be in good condition not to need Optifast to reduce the size of a fatty liver. Some people go on it anyhow to get used to a liquid diet. Of course you'll stay away from fatty fried foods, if you ever have them, and a few Celebrity Slim (or other) soups with added veges wouldn't go astray (as a meal replacement), but why do it if you don't have to?!
If you haven't done so already, you could stock up on frozen fruits (berries, mango) to blend with yoghurt and banana for sustenence after the op. And there are some nice 'tubbed' fresh soups in the supermarkets for when you don't feel like making your own. Good luck!
Terra, so glad you're on the mend at last. Keep us posted with your liquid, mushies menu.

Have been up an about most of the day and really starting to feel better. Hopefully you wont have a repeat of your shoulder pain. Goog luck for your op. |
