Hi everyone
Its been six months since my band went in and I'm about 7-8kgs off my goal weight! Its been a bit of a balancing act getting my fills right and actually I made my doc take some out as I was fed up with the problems it was causing me - vomiting, headaches, constipation etc Couldn't eat anything more that soup, cheese and crackers. He wasn't really impressed with me when I told him I wanted some of the fill out - got annoyed,(I had to argue my point) he told me I was going to balloon out - thanks for vote of confidence!!
Anyways my expectations for banding included 3 small healthy meals a day, not being completely unable to eat anything and I felt my health was being affected. So thats where I'm at at the moment - good restriction but still the ability to eat normally! Now its time to prove my Doc wrong!
I wonder whether thats a normal way for his other patients to be - only able to eat mushies forever? Not for me!
Hope all is going well with you other bandsters

Fantastic News Ads!
The time will go really quickly and now you can eat what you like for the next 6 weeks until the appointment.
I have to admit I "porked" up before my first appointment as I was afraid he would say no to the operation.
Enjoy Christmas knowing that you will be giving you the best present ever.
Lots of love,
Gabs |

HI Ads,
You should get a referral no problems. If your doc won't give you one go to another who will.
It is the surgeon you have to convince and that can be more difficult.
Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Thanks Gab
Am very excited about this, I live in Adelaide and will be seeing my Doctor tomorrow. Seriously hoping he'll give me a referal to see Dr Leong. Hve read lots of great things about him on line. One step at a time I guess. Thanks for your help am looking forward to checking the low BMI 30-35 details and get an idea what is all about.
Am sure that it will be a journey of a life time!

Hi A,
as I said on the general chat thread. My BMI was 29.6 on the day of banding so it is possible to be banded at a low BMI.
Where do you live? I am in Sydney but even if you are in another state it is possible to have the op with a low BMI as the other ladies on this thread can attest to.
There is more and more research out there that says that low BMI patients actually get better results from banding and that as in most things prevention is better than cure.
Welcome to the journey of a lifetime! Ask all the questions you like. We are here to help.
Lots of love,
Gabs |

Just popping in here to pass this on in the hope someone here can help.

Hi
Just wondering what the criteria would be to qualify for lap banding?
My BMI is 29 so I’m not sure if I would qualify for a referral let alone surgery. I am having problems with shortness of breath and sleep apnoea and have yoyo with my weight for most of my life?
Any advise

Hi Christie,
That is a perfectly reasonable aim. We all want to be healthy and happy.
I made the decision quite quickly as well and had the surgery within a few weeks. The band will definately give you an off switch physically, it is mentally that I still have to fight with.
I too have seen psychologists and psychiatrists in my time and I know the whys of my addiction. Still have to fight it though. Ate too much today and thought about food all day.
I'm starting a new get fit campaign and diet tomorrow so hope to see some more results soon.
Mandy my dear that is great news about being in the 60's! I was there for about three days at the beginning of August and hope to be back there by Christmas. That would be a really good present to myself.
Love to everyone out there and I hope you all have a great week.

That's a point, lapbanddec0 is unlikely to catch on as a nickname :-)
Thanks guys, I have been reading your threads for a few weeks now - congratulations on your successes to date, they are very inspiring. It's all happened very quickly, I only started researching in early November. I live in Canberra but will have surgery in Sydney, so Gabs' posts were really helpful. I'm not too scared so far, this'll be my 3rd surgery in 3 years so I'm getting kind of used to anaesthetic - and morphine... mmmm....;-)
An odyssey - as it is for everyone. I realised that dieting for the past 20 years was only making me fatter, so I stopped early this year. Read all the anti-diet literature and saw a psychologist for the compulsive eating. I've managed to better structure my eating (though as you say Gabs, it'll always be my drug of choice). Letting instinct do its thing, I find I eat a reasonably balanced diet and I try to exercise regularly as I'm vulnerable to depression. But I don't have an "off-switch" for food. I limit eating to my structured times, but I overeat at every meal. So I'm hoping that if I just keep doing what I'm doing - sane, healthy, non-diet eating only at planned times, the band will help me get back into the BMI 20's (27 is fine by me, it's healthy, as long as you are fit) and stop me putting on more weight and developing the family diseases - high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes - when I'm older.
Does that sound a reasonable aim?
Thanks, Christie. |

Hi lapbanddec0 (you need to tell us your name thats a lot to type ;-)
My BMI was just under 34 when I was banded. Good luck with everything on 8th December the date will come around really quickly. I think we were all worried about never being able to eat our favourite foods again and there are some things that a lot of us have trouble with but most of the time you should be able to have most things if you eat slowly and chew thoroughly. Some people have the band loosened a little when they reach goal so they are able to eat most things while maintaining their healthy weight, I hope to do this.
Hi Gabs
Good to see you are still popping in and out. How is everything going? I am well and have broken into the sixties at last (69.2). Are you doing anything at Christmas?
Take care
Love Mandy |

Hi there,
Congratulations on getting your date.
Don't let anything put you off posting here if you want to.
We are all recovering food addicts here (if we are honest with ourselves) and I for one still class myself as an addict. I don't really think there will ever be a recovery for me.
That is why the band is so helpful. It physically restricts you from taking too much of your drug of choice. I am just really lucky that I became addicted to food because if it was anything else I would have been in real trouble.
If you have any questions or fears please let us know. We try to help as much as we can.
Lots of love to you,
Gabs |

| Hi all, just wanted to say a huge "thank you" for the thread :-) I stumbled across it from a google search for low BMI lapbanding - I have a BMI of 34 although I thought at the time it was 32 (denial's a wonderful thing!) and this thread was pretty much the inspiration for my visit to the surgeon. And now I have a surgery date of 8 December! Not sure how much I'll be on the forums - as a recovering dieter/ compulsive eater I freak out at the "good food/ bad food" talk that happens, although not really on this thread - but I'll certainly post some post-surgery experiences in the hope that it helps some of the other people silently lurking out there, like I was! |

| Hi Mandy, I read your post regarding going past BMI of 25, well you can my bmi was 31 at banding and now it is less then 22 (last time I checked) my height is 1.56 and I weigh 52.5, so it is possible. It took me about 8 months to get there and some times for a whole month there was no weight loss but now and again I used to boost my exercise or change my diet. Good luck with your journey and stay focused. |

Hi Sonya
I won't make it to my goal but am pretty pleased anyway, well done on your loss, you are pretty close. I wonder how the others are doing.
10kg to my goal but to be honest I now think that goal might be too low. I was told by my Dr yesterday that it is hard to get past a BMI of around 27 with the band which I am at now but I am determined to get to at least BMI 25 and be in the healthy range.
Good luck everyone

Hi Vickxter42,
My BMi was 29 point something on the day of banding. If you look back at the first posts on this thread you can read about my story.
I would tell the doctor that you have tried everything else and have thought a lot about this and wanted to have the operation.
I said that I knew I was at the lower end of the BMI scale for surgery but that recent studies had talked about the successes of banding for people with a low BMI and that it was better to do it now than to wait for health problems to arrive with the extra kilos.
I also said to him that if he wouldn't do it at this weight, I would only be back in his office in six months time heavier, more unhealthy and asking for the operation.
My doc agreed with me and did the surgery. It has not been easy, but I am so thankful to have had it done. I have lost 17 kilos since the operation, then gained back 4, now trying to lose that again and go down even further.
If I can help in any way let me know.
When are you seeing your doc?
Lots of love,
Gabs |
