I have not had any problems with Fizzy drinks, I actually had a few Champagnes earlier. I am however only on my 1st fill so things could change and obviously you need to factor in the calories!!! I was also a big Pepsi Max drinker which I have given up. I have given it up simply because when you are dinking soft drink you are not drinking water. I know easily drink 2 litres of water everyday.
Andrea,
Good luck with everything. Let us know how you go at your appointment. You will find alot of people tell you that you are "not big enough to have surgery" but once your BMI is over 30 you are obese and if nothing is done then its probably only going to keep increasing. My BMI was 34 and is now 30. This is the best thing I have ever done for myself even though its only early days( I was banded 23 July 09) |

Ronnie, I'd heard you couldn't drink fizzy stuff, and had a disastrous evening out two months after banding when I ignored that information and drank a champagne (guess what) tail (disappearing all night and throwing up in the dark outside the restaurant - a country setting, thank goodness). It's not the sort of thing you can practise on at home unless you have lots of friends to drink the leftovers.
Now, almost two years later, I can slip champagne slowly if I have to eg if the bottle's opened specially (well, I've tried twice), but I don't risk it in public just in case, and I have been known to find a pot plant rather than risk throwing up.
Yet, yet - Gabs, who started this thread, has said she has no problem with fizzy drinks.
Another warning - stay away from croissants! They lump up and stick.

ps Would you believe the above drink has been censored!!! |

Hello, Rachel, and welcome. I'm sorry you haven't had a reply yet - I'm from a country region so can't help you, but hopefully there'll be some Sydney people out there. Failing that, check which doctors have information sessions, I'm sure they all do (check the specialist clinics). At the information session you can sound out the doctor's policy (and they like you to have done some investigating yourself so you know what you're letting yourself in for).
Best of luck and let us know how you go.

Ronnie, and all out there, at the risk of hogging this site, I'll give you a brief history of my weight loss progress in the first few months. Bear in mind I'm a slow loser, but as my operation was around the same time as yours will be (23 Oct 2007) I thought you might find the comparison useful.
Pre-op., pre Optifast weight:
13.10.07: 97.7 kg
12.12.07: 91.3 (first fill)
05.02.08: 89.8 (second fill)
07.04.08: 85.0
11.06.08: 81.8
16.08.08: 79.3
15.10.08: 75.5
20.12.08: 75.2 (sixth? fill)
Since then I've been hovering between 73 and 75 kg, with the up and down fills I mentioned a few days back. I would be happy with 72 kg, which is way more than we are expected to lose per centage wise (50-60% of excess weight is the average).

Hello, Ronnie. Your stats are close to mine: bmi 33+, starting weight 97.7, height 170cm. It took me a year to lose 20-22kg, and almost a year later I still hover around 22-24kgs. Katie's experience echoes mine, average weight loss half a kg a week, one and a half to 2 kgs per month. It sounds so little but it keeps on happening (well, for 20 kgs anyhow, and who's complaining). If it were WW or J. Craig it'd would be rather discouraging, but this way at least we don't feel so hungry, as if every day is a constant battle with food.
If you read back you'll see some like Amanda lose weight much more quickly, and you may too, but don't be discouraged if you don't - you'll get there.

Hi Ronnie,
I desperately wanted to lose 1kg a week but it is more like 1-2kg a month. I think because we are low BMI it is a bit slower, but everyone is different.
Good Luck.

Hi Ronnie,
I thought at first that 2 weeks would be plenty of time for recovery, since I was out of hospital 18 hrs after the op. But then I found that I got tired a lot. A 15 minute walk would send me straight back to bed for a rest. So, I needed the 2 weeks off work just to get my energy back.
Optifast worked well for me, I didn't mind the taste and I stuck strictly with the drinks for 2 weeks.
Good luck

| I forgot to ask everyone - I realsie everyone has different healing times, but what would the average be? My dr has said that I will need to take 2 weeks off work - (Mmm happy with that! do the school run then back to bed - bliss) Is this time period excessive or the norm? Are my expectations to lose 1kg a week realistic? Ronnie |

| Thanks ladies for your kind messages. My BMI is 32.2,(174cm 97.5kg) however same old same old being told how to lose weight - well we all know how to lose it, it is a matter of keeping it off and being able to maintain a healthy weight. EASIER SAID THAN DONE!!! I have been thinking of being banded 24/7 for about 8 weeks when finally my appointment arrived and I was really concerned as to wether they would band me - when I was told that i would be banded i was overwhelmed. Not only for the weight loss but to finally have a tool that I will be able to maintain a heealthy weight. Yay. My surgeon is going away on holidays hence the waiting period, I wish I could have it tommorrow, I really beleive that my head is in the right space and obviously ready to procedd. My surgeon has indicated that I will only require the meal replacements for 1 week - what a relief, I feel for you guys that have been able to tolerate it for 3 weeks, however in the long run it would be well worth it. I love reading all your posts. Ronnie |

Hi all
Just been to the doctors and had my first fill. What a breeze. I was expecting it to be traumatic but could not have been more simple. I had 4.5mls already in my band and had another 1.5 so I now have 6 in total. Dont go back for another 6 weeks so hoping to have moved a few kilos by then. I have now lost 10 Kgs and could not be happier (I know I did not sould like that 6 weeks ago).
Ronsta
Welcome and good luck with your op. Just remember that the Opti stage can be a bit testing but its over before you know it. I also added Vanilla Essence to my choc shakes which helped. As Libbi said the Bars are nice and make you feel more full. |

Welcome, Ronsta68, a great decision and what a wonderful post!
As for meal replacements, the Optifast muesli bars in berry and cappuccino are absolutely delicious and quite filling, although a bit of a shock to those of us used to vegemite toast for breakfast. I found the Celebrity Slim soups easier to mix than Optifast, and I added lots of veges and curry to them. As you may have read, I had lots of vege stirfries with oyster sauce, and stayed away from shakes completely (too much sweetness). If you're low bmi you mightn't need to do it for long (it was 10 days for me).
Perhaps you'd like to tell us your starting BMI, and keep us posted re your progress.

Hello, Minnie. Glad you were able to see the doctor so quickly: the extra restriction can make you feel quite off colour, I know. Some months back I had what must have been a blockage (not related to a new adjustment) - great for weight loss, but not much good for getting on with everyday life. That meant a mill. out.
And then I had an adjustment some weeks back, .5 up to 8 mls; despite the drink of water test in the surgery it was too much when I tried to drink that night. The doctor then takes out more than was put in at the time (because of swelling he says), so it's a case of one step forward and two back! I had it topped up to where I was before the 'overfill' a couple of weeks after. Now I'm ready for a bit more. Patience, patience.
Jess, was it you who mentioned study assignments? Me too, even at my age! My worst habit is grazing when I'm trying to write things, any excuse to find soft slithery delicacies rather than face the computer.
Best of luck all on your journeys.

| Hi Guys, I have been reading your threads for months. I am also ne to replying to0 threads. Mu mum was banded 12 months ago and looks fantastic, she has lost over 25 kg. I to will be banded on 30OCT09 - Can't wait. I would like to let you all know that you really have been inspirational. If it wasn't for you guys I don't think that I would have proceeded due to having a lower BMI and thinking that no surgeon would do it. I just have to get my head around the meal replacements, the only one that I can tolerate is The boiggest loser all the others make my dry rech! I will have to dicuss this further with my surgeon neek week, hopefully all will be good. Keep up the good work. |

Hi Libbi,
forgot to tell you about the fill. When they placed the band, it had 1.5 ml in it. Yesterday's adjustment added another 2.5ml and today they've taken 1.5ml out, leaving a total of 2.5ml in the band.

Hi Libbi,
you are right, I was too restricted. Went back to the doctor today and had 1.5 ml taken out. After that I could keep the water down. Have since had some optifast and feel a lot better. I guess I'll have to find the right level of restriction over the next 3 appointments. The doctor advised liquids for a couple of days to let everything settle, then semisolids for another 2 days, than back to solids - and lots of fluids today.
Terra, good luck with your first fill. I learnt from this to be patient, not one of my strengths!
Thanks so much for your help

Minnie, how are you feeling now? Can you eat a little, and, most importantly, drink? If you can't keep liquid down you are definitely too restricted, hence the 'sliming'. A really telling sign of too much restriction is reflux at night, when you wake up with a horrible taste in your mouth.
I hope it's all settled down for you. Let us know how you are, and what amount your fill was (for our interest).

Hi Amanda,
After gaining 1.5 kg back over the last 2 weeks I had my first band adjustment today. I drank 1/4 glass of water at the surgeon's offices and felt quite uncomfortable on the way home. Lots of "frothy saliva" since then, even with water or peppermint tea. Will this settle down or has the band been tightened too much? |
