Hi Guy's,
It was great reading this page again to realize the weight loss or lack of weight loss is quite normal in people who have low BMI. I had my band done October last year and todate have only lost 17kilo, don't get me wrong I am happy about that but am at a bit of a stand still at the moment. I have moved again and now need to find a new doctor to do my fills. I have also enlisted the help of a trainer. I only have about 5 kilos to go but I think they are going to be the hardest.
I love reading your story's and out comes keep posting, It helps a lot when I'm feeling a bit down. |

Hi Andrea,
I was banded on 1st Sept at Hollywood Hosp in Nedlands. Surgeon was Prof Jeff Hamdorf - he's at a clinic called the Circle of Care 25 McCourt St, Subi.
My BMI came in at 35, and I was worried he wouldnt "do" me, but he did!
All's good, first 2 wks were the most difficult getting over the op and just being on a liquid diet. I go back to Jeff for my first fill in 3 wks, he actually put 4ml in my band on op day.
I've lost 7kgs and find it AMAZING that so little food fills me up.
Give the clinic a call, they're very helpful and supportive, insist you do the physc and dietitian before the op and the ongoing support program for the year is great. My insurance covered all but $5K, which includes 5 fills and follow up visits.
Good luck and keep reading!

Andrea, re your surgery costs: is that $14,000 without private cover? Some people I have read take out private cover and then wait the year for their surgery. Others are able to access their superannuation, and I know our local doctor lets people pay it off gradually.
Keep researching!

Jan, you and Rachel are both looking for someone in the same area, and Sarah has a doctor around Gosford, as I'm sure you've read. There are area listings on the web under 'bariatric surgery australia'(and no doubt in the yellow pages). You could ask them over the phone about their low bmi policy (the assistant may not want to speak for the doctor) and ask them about their information sessions to get a better idea. Have you asked your gp for advice yet (although some can be rather negative about surgery, as we've read)?
Don't be embarrassed! I had my op. at the age of 64 after years of up and down weight, and 'panic' eating. One good thing on the side of older people is that we have more health risk factors, like arthritis and diabetes, so weight loss is especially important.

Marg - yours is another miracle story. What an amazing weight loss and congratulations! Do your friends still recognise you?!
Yes, we do want it all off! I seem to be stuck at 75% of excess weight lost but I'm thrilled with that and shall persevere with fills. I wonder if the average of 50-60% applies to people who have much higher BMIs, maybe they are thrilled with a great weight loss then get a bit 'stale' or even complacent (I tell myself to be careful about that).

This is the first time I have been to this site, and I need some help. I have a BMI of "only" 31, but I continue to get bigger because some medication I take for anxiety has the side effect of making me want to keep eating. I have made genuine attempts to reduce my size but it just keeps getting bigger. I have passed menopause and it's nearly impossible to move large amounts of fat once you get to this stage. So, banding seems like a good idea, but I have been shocked to read that unless I am over 35 BMI they won't want to know me. So it's been reassuring to read some of your posts.
Could you tell me what the first step is? (I have a high level of private health cover.)
Secondly, I live in the Newcastle region and was wondering whether anyone with a Low BMI might have had the banding procedure done locally.
I am just finding my way through a difficult (embarassing) area and I would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks libbi for your advice, i know it will be worth it, after all ive spent nearly all my adult life battling the bulge, you name it ive tried it and have sometimes been sucsessful but i always seem to get to around 79kg and then zilch, then i get really disheartened and it creeps back up! in other words i am the typical yo yo dieter!!
i was told by my surgeons office assisstant that it would cost $14000! i wonder does that include the follow up appointments, fills etc..
the other thing that may or may not go in my favour is that im a student nurse, so like any good student i have done the research and know the consequences of being overweight in the longterm! we shall see. at the moment im 165cm and 86kg, hope this is enough!!
thanks again, its been great to get it off my chest, speak soon!

Andrea,
I started with a bmi of 36 - 91kg, 158cm. Just four months down the track i weigh 71kg! Only 16kg to go til goal! So long as you as vigilant with the followup and get regular fills - it WILL work! I was out of pocket about $10k all up with mine - but it was worth every cent! Good luck with your decision!
To all the girls on this thread - have been reading it with interest for months now as i thought of myself as a lower bmi, but not in the 30-35 range so scared to post - silly i know! lol. It's been great to follow your journeys, and it inspires me with confidence that i can succeed at this! As for the 50-60% of excess weight loss theory - i want it all off! That's my goal!
Marg :-) |

Welcome, Andrea. yes, it does work and is worth every penny. Even with private cover I was out of pocket $5000, and that's cheap compared with some, especially as the surgeon bulk-bills all the post op. adjustments. Like you, I kept very quiet about the operation, it seems to make people very nervous (jealous?) and I wanted to make sure it worked, unlike all the other diets where you lose it all and then put on even more. But once you lose weight you still have to be very careful with what you eat, and from my experience you need to keep on with the fills (perhaps other people have more will power than me).
Some hints for the doctor: they seem to like to know that you've tried various diet programmes eg WW or J.Craig, and have been able to lose some weight in the past (that you've really made an effort before). It may help your case if you have (or say you have) aching knees or back from excess weight, and that you are really concerned about your health. And they like to know that you are aware of the importance of exercise (as boring as it is to me), even walking around the block ( I do Curves which is quite bearable and quick).
The doctor may say, as he did to me: 'well, the average weight loss is 50-60% of excess weight, is it worth it?' Yes, it is! (In my case that was 16-18 kgs, I 've lost 22 plus).
Let us know how you go - there are always other doctors out there, but I'm sure you'll be ok.
Lisa, welcome and good luck for your big day.

Good morning people,
I live in NZ and being banded on Friday....that is only 4 sleeps away!! Yikes...
I am 161cm and weigh 85 kg....so I am one of the lower BMI girls.
I am so glad I found this thread, I give a big sigh if relief thinking I am not on my own. My surgeon in NZ said that I was one of the skinniest people he has operated on. Not sure if that made me feel better or not?? But he did tell me that he would help to get me back into a bikini and get my confidence back!!
I have to dash to work but will be going through these messages later tonight.
Take care
Lisa

thanks so much for your quick reply. thats my worry, that the surgeon will say no, and your right i havnt spoken to anyone about it as the few people i have have said why!! why! because its my last resort, probly like many others, ive tried everything but to no avail, it is certainly no easy decision and certainly not the easy way out, i have tried talking myself out of it many times, but i know if the surgeon says no i would be really upset. the other reason im trying to talk myself out of it is because i will be funding this myself and its ALOT of money, but will it be worth all that money just to be slimmer and healthier?? does it really work??? oh all these questions, any views would be greatly appreciated!! thanks

Ronnie
I have not had any problems with Fizzy drinks, I actually had a few Champagnes earlier. I am however only on my 1st fill so things could change and obviously you need to factor in the calories!!! I was also a big Pepsi Max drinker which I have given up. I have given it up simply because when you are dinking soft drink you are not drinking water. I know easily drink 2 litres of water everyday.
Andrea,
Good luck with everything. Let us know how you go at your appointment. You will find alot of people tell you that you are "not big enough to have surgery" but once your BMI is over 30 you are obese and if nothing is done then its probably only going to keep increasing. My BMI was 34 and is now 30. This is the best thing I have ever done for myself even though its only early days( I was banded 23 July 09) |

Ronnie, I'd heard you couldn't drink fizzy stuff, and had a disastrous evening out two months after banding when I ignored that information and drank a champagne (guess what) tail (disappearing all night and throwing up in the dark outside the restaurant - a country setting, thank goodness). It's not the sort of thing you can practise on at home unless you have lots of friends to drink the leftovers.
Now, almost two years later, I can slip champagne slowly if I have to eg if the bottle's opened specially (well, I've tried twice), but I don't risk it in public just in case, and I have been known to find a pot plant rather than risk throwing up.
Yet, yet - Gabs, who started this thread, has said she has no problem with fizzy drinks.
Another warning - stay away from croissants! They lump up and stick.

ps Would you believe the above drink has been censored!!! |

Hello, Rachel, and welcome. I'm sorry you haven't had a reply yet - I'm from a country region so can't help you, but hopefully there'll be some Sydney people out there. Failing that, check which doctors have information sessions, I'm sure they all do (check the specialist clinics). At the information session you can sound out the doctor's policy (and they like you to have done some investigating yourself so you know what you're letting yourself in for).
Best of luck and let us know how you go.

Ronnie, and all out there, at the risk of hogging this site, I'll give you a brief history of my weight loss progress in the first few months. Bear in mind I'm a slow loser, but as my operation was around the same time as yours will be (23 Oct 2007) I thought you might find the comparison useful.
Pre-op., pre Optifast weight:
13.10.07: 97.7 kg
12.12.07: 91.3 (first fill)
05.02.08: 89.8 (second fill)
07.04.08: 85.0
11.06.08: 81.8
16.08.08: 79.3
15.10.08: 75.5
20.12.08: 75.2 (sixth? fill)
Since then I've been hovering between 73 and 75 kg, with the up and down fills I mentioned a few days back. I would be happy with 72 kg, which is way more than we are expected to lose per centage wise (50-60% of excess weight is the average).
