Thanks Terratime29, some people have told me they had to go on it for 6 weeks but I think they had a high BMI. Also I live in Sydney what doctor did your banding?

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
I did the optifast programme prior to surgery....but very loosly. I was having the shakes for breakfast, usually a berry cruch bar for lunch and just a normal dinner. I wish that I had done it strictly for at least one week prior to surgery (just my thoughts and opinion).

For me it helped to get the brain into the habbit of not eating snacks every time I had a hot drink.

It does have its advantages, such as kicks starts the weight loss, reduces the liver (for ease in surgery) and helps to get you into the right head space to make this journey a really successful one.

Good luck

Hi Diana, I think you are doing very well. First of all congratulations on a fantastic result in 08. WOW!
In July 09 I weighed 105kg, bmi 35. Banded on 6/8/09 at 98kg, bmi 33.1 I have now lost a total of 15kg and my BMI is 30. I too have another 15 kg ahead of me. I am still learning to follow the rules and to be patient. I don't know how much age has to do with it. I am 52. You have done it before and know what to do. You'll do really well. Good luck

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me a summary of their weightloss after being banded with low BMI. Iwas orginally banded with bmi of 40.4 in feb 2008 by oct 2008 i had lost 41kg and had bmi of 26.7. but i fall pregannt and suffered a slipped band. So last week on 10th oct i had my band removed and repalced as well as hernia repaired and divsion of adhesion. My weight on my new banding day was 87.9kg (bmi of 29.4). now nearly week later iam weighing in at 85kg and so glad to be abck on the journey. but my question is what can i expect my weightloss to be like i know it wont be as fast as last time as am not as big and am now 26 so my metabolism is slowing down. What should i am for monthly weight loss. my dream goal is 70kilos which is a bmi of 23.3. so i have 15kilos to go.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Kerrie, I did even though I had a lower BMI my surgeon still wanted to shrink my liver to make placing the band easier. The opti sucks, its the hardest part about the whole process but puts you in the right frame of mind for everything. I luckily only did it for 2 weeks. Others on here however have not had to do it, just depends on your surgeon.

Libbi, bumping means bringing a message to the front page that has gradually moved a long way down the list.
Find the message, click on "Reply to this message" and either write something relevant or just write Bumping. You need to write something to make it move forward, Good Luck Mack

fattifatti, please tell me about the 'bumping'? Is that to update the posts and what do you do? I suppose rasberry's post is the same? I'm computer illiterate.
Thank you all for your feedback, it so helps, no matter what stage we're at.

Hi there,

I had my surgery in Wellington by Dr. David Schroder. He operates in Wellington 2 days per month and the rest of the time in Hamilton.

There are other surgeons around but they are in Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton. That I know of.

You did Ann but well done! The surgeon will need a sound clinical reason for a low BMI banding so it is best to think about it before the appointment. Mack

The doctor will make the decision based on what you tell him. He will be looking for reasons that relate to improving your health and he will need to be certin that you are committed and understand what you are asking for. Good luck! Mack

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi there Marg, & Tanya

I like to see results fast but I know with this journey that it is a long term thing and we can't be too impatient. So again a head thing....sadly that was not operated on last Friday, only the stomach! The band is a permanent structure within all of us and used well, it will give us the results.....which is well documented within all of these threads.

I love it when people say it CAN'T be done....cause then you have something to prove, like a challenge! Now that has to be some great motivation right there!

I cant wait until I get to 70kg....a bit of personal family thing, to weigh less than my sister-in-law who has always been snarky about my weight! So bring it on!!!!

Good luck with breaking into the 60's Marg.

I am glad that I am not on my own here. I like most of us, scared of failure. I have just spent just over $16000 of my family's money that was going to be used to an overseas holiday (from NZ to the Gold Coast) so I am worried that if I dont do well I have cost us our family holiday that we have all been longing for.

Thanks for the replies, this chat group really helps me as I have only told a few select few (5)who I totally trust. So it is good to be able to de-brief here....

Hi Lisa,

Sounds like you are healing wonderfully! And congrats on the weightloss! I found i was extremely hungry about 4 days post-op even tho i had 3.5ml in my band. My dietician also advised me to go on to mushies after 7 days post-op, and i was on solids within 2 weeks! Stick to the rules your team gives you and you will be fine! You will need a few fills to experience the restriction you're after - but it will come! I was banded in May 2009 with a start weight of 91.4, and weigh 70.7kg this week! My goal is to get down to 55kg. I'm told by many it can be done! Enjoy!

Marg :-)

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Lisa,

I too am a low BMI day of surgery which was on 17/7/09 I weighed in at 85.4kg have had 2 fills (3rd one is this Thursday) and I think I am at about 77kg. It is a loss and I know the weight will never come back, but was hoping for a bit more. My goal was 10kg by christmas. I too have little restiction and have been able to eat pretty much everything, the only discomfort is when I eat too fast. I have been trying to limit size by using a small fork/spoon and a small bowl and plate which helps during meal times but its the in between that is becoming a problem, the constant snacking and not keeping track of what is going in. I find that after breakie and up to lunch I am starving. Hoping this will be a little sorted out once I get 3rd fill. I have 5ml in at the moment. Someone once said to me that it takes many many years to put on the extra kilos, so dont expect it to come off quickly! I understand this but feel that with more restriction there will be more results on the scales.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Kerrie,

As you can see on my previous post the only thing I have found is that I dont have the restriction yet.

The operation was fine, a small amount of shoulder tip pain but heat works really well.

The 5 small incisions are healing really well, no pain there at all. I did have trouble laying on my left side for a few days but I can lay anyway I like now with no pain.

I feel really really well, I am starting on my treadmill this week....Just pulled it out of the garage and dusted it off.

The only thing I am personally is struggling with is the no biscuits with my hot drinks!! I will have to find something else or just learn to go without.

The weight so far has been the best I have ever experienced and really hope that it long continues.

I dont regret having the operation what so ever. In NZ it costs around $16000 - 18000.00. If you have health insurance for longer than 3 years you can get a rebate of about $5000.00 but htis is with only certain companies. I didn't qualify as I have only had my insurance with that company for 2 years and was prepared to wait another full year....just think of all that weight I could have potentially put on!!

So, all in all Kerrie, no side affects at all and for me it was the best decision I could have made for myself.

Take care and I hope this has helped

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi there Gabs,

Like you I was told by the surgeon that my goal is 70kg but my own personal goal is 65kg...but would really love to hit 60kg!

To everyone else on this Low BMI thread,

I have been banded for 8 days and I am driving myself completly nuts! I was told by my surgeon that cause I am thinner than most, even with 4ml in the band it was still waving about in the breeze. I am going for a fill on Friday 10th Oct, was meant to be due on the 22nd. This is because I have no restriction at all! I have been advised to go on to the soft mushie food now. I am trying to restrict it to 3 meals per day as I was told to do by the nutritionist but the hunger is driving me around the twist....not sure if it is tummy hunger or head hunger that is doing it but I have my food, wait 20 minutes, have a hot drink and still HUNGRY!!!! I feel as if I could eat a horse and chase the jockey right now. I am doing really well at making good choices with the right things but the amounts are getting bigger and bigger....now this is the part that scares me as portion size has always been my issue.

The weight loss in the first week has been outstanding, I did not have to do the Opti pre-op because of being a lower BMI lady.

Obviously my body has responded well to the liquid phase becasue on the morning of the surgery I was 86.9kg, fully clothed but with no shoes. 1 week later I am 80.5kg and that was first thing in the morning, after a pee and naked.

Dont get me wrong I am so over the moon with this loss....I have even suprised myself. I feel great physically and have gone back to work.

Has anyone else had this issue? I would love to know if this can be normal or I am on my own here?

Thanks for thoughts

Lisa NZ
