Hi frostee,
Thanks for your praise, I have had a dream run I must admit!
Prior to banding I lost around 30 kilos in 3 years through dare I say it diet pills, any diet I read about, WW you name it I did it, got fat, got thinner etc. I saw the band as the one thing that may help me lose the rest of my weight and hopefully keep it off for good.
AS for how many cups of food I eat... well that is really hard to answer. Take yesterday lunch we had risotto at Mum's, I had 1/4 cup and was so full and got wind pain from it. I shouldn't eat rice but I was at someones house.... and you do these things. Dinner the night before was beef strog and I would have had a good sized cup to 1 1/4 cup. I didn't have any meat in it though, just gravy with onion and small carrots. I can't really stick to the cup thing as a guide as it depends what sort of foods you have in the cup!
If say I was having vegies and nothing else for dinner I would eat 1 1/2 cups easy.
I cannot eat steak, chops, pork, most chicken, most mince, all forms of bread including wraps... the list goes on! |

Hello Mandy,
Thanks for the hello. I'm well and feeling happy with the progress so far. Have another surgeon's appointment this week and not sure whether to push for more fill or not. I am losing but very slowly now, and am trying to weigh up my optuions. I'm scared of having a slip or getting heatburn again if the band is tightened, so not sure whether to just leave it. How is your health going? You really had a rough go of it hon!
Cheers,
Amanda |

| Sorry Madonna, one more - how much did you lose in the year to get to goal? I wanted to lose 30kgs in a year and thought that was pretty realistic. The first 20kgs came off ok in under 6 months, but I'm worried that the next 10kgs will take more than 6 months to shift. |

Hi Lulu
I hope you don't mind me butting in. I was banded April 07 at BMI 33.6, I got down to BMI 24.5 then my band slipped and I had an emergency replacement band in March this year. The group I was banded with are very conservative with fills and I still don't have a decent restriction, the last fill I had has given me a little but I can still eat anything (and everything!!).
Madonna speaks a lot of sense and as she says the first real step is some restriction. It is hard to imagine how this will work when you are feeling hungry all the time and until the band is tightened properly then it's really as if we have no help at all.
Since my re-operation I have put on about 4kg (in five months) which is disappointing but proof to me that I really need this tool, I am not stressing as I have already walked this road and I know it will work. Soon you will feel less hungry and the weight will begin to come off, then you will find lots more motivation.
Good luck

Madonna,
Your story is so inspiring! It's great to hear from someone 2 years banded and at goal weight for over a year. Sounds like you had to work at it, and your tips are very useful. I know everyone's experience is different, but if you don't mind me asking, about how much food (cups) do you think you could currently eat at one sitting? I think I can eat about 2 now, and that that is too much. Also, are there foods you can't eat, or do you have trouble eating out? And finally (sorry!), how did you maintain the goad weight? Did you do anything to stop losing ir did it just happen. I am scared that once I stop really trying hard to lose weight that I will put it on again.
Thanks and well done to you!

Lulu,
Here is the thing, you still have to watch what goes into your mouth. I did not diet severly and I would not say I over exercised either. I walked everyday, I don't do gyms. I lost my weight by exercising and eating very small portions of food. Good homestyle cooking, heaps of vegies, gravies to help it all go down etc and kept myself full all the time. I eat 5 times a day, if I don't I am starving and thats when I trun to a snack food and disaster stricks!!
What I did do, and what you need to do is get rid of the chocolate, ice cream and chips out of the house, oh and shape biscuits! These things go down so easily. Don't kis yourself that you will get a bag of snack size chocolate and say you will eat one a day, you will eat the 15 in one sitting, I know, I did!
My last 5 kilos was hard to get off, I excersised like mad to do it and I did not eat any c r a p p y snacks. Snack foods are a killer.
You have to remember that your band isn't the easy way out, eat rubbish and you will not lose weight. I had around 4 fills to get good restrictions and I think I only had 6 in total. I would say that you need another fill to start with.
Once those scales start to move you will find that you will be more focused with your weight lose. It is quite exciting to stand in front of the mirror and like what you see.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi Madonna,
I was also BMI around 31-32. Banded on 16 June. Todate have hardly lost anything. 2nd fill was on Monday and feeling a little restriction for the first time.
Unfortunately, big pig me is still eating chocolate...but now with fill am trying to improve.
Did you find you had to 'diet' pretty severely to get to where you are now. I know its harder when there is less to lose - but no matter what I want to lose it.
Any tips greatly appreciated.
thanks..Lulu |

ozze_dollar,
My BMI was 31 when I was banded 2 years ago. I got goal weight within 12 months and have maintained it easily ever since.
You may be lazy, I know I was, but I had also tried every diet, prescription drug, over the counter remedy I could find.
Having the band helped my lose weight with gentle exercise. Now I have lost my weight, I have so much energy, confidence and exercise is something I quite enjoy and I find it easy as I am healthier and fitter.

PS. If anyone say Jamie Oliver's "Eat to Save Your Life" episode a few weeks ago, I get you are as glad as I am that we're taking positive steps not to be obese any more. It seems like it's politically acceptable to tell people to lose weight now that obesity is seen as such a health issue. It ised to be such a no no to talk about people needing to lose weight and there was so much emphasis on accepting your body and not feeling that you have to be stick thin to be OK ETC ETC. It's a hard one, as I still feel torn about this, and having a daughter want her to feel OK about her body no matter what. But it's not about looks, it's about health, now more than ever. Now I see morbidly obses people and actually feel so scared for them, and imagine the risk they are in and trully wonder how long they have to live. Haveing someone close to the family die of obesity related causes recently it really hits home that we are doing the right thing, and way better sooner (ie, BMI of 35 or less) rather than later.
Sorry to ramble,
Amanda |

ozze,
we all struggled with the 'lazy' tag, and its somehing you have to overcome if you want to get the band. It was my GP who first put it to me that it wasn't lazy - it was sensible, and research shows that gastric banding is the only LONG TERM (ie, more than 5 years follow up) dieting method to actually succeed in keeping the weight off. Have you been to one of the surgeon's information sessions yet? it's the best way to have some of your questions answered.
A quick update on me: I seem to be having a good run lately, as it's still a case of the more I eat the more I lose - crazy and I better not get to complacent. Still losing timy amounts, but now only a mere 0.3kg's away from the elusive 20kg's. BMI now 28.2. Have a surgeon's appointment this week, so it will be interesting to see what he says.
Cheers all,
Amanda |

Hey,
Hope everyone had a good weekend.
Amanda - I am really happy with my loss so far and I think once I've only got 7kg or so to lose I'll be happy to take things slow.
But I'm still pretty impatient now and just want to lose the next 10kg quickly.
I'm forbidden myself to step on the scales for the next two days and hopefully I'll have a decent loss after that.
I'm around 91kg now.

Hi folks,
Thanks to Amanda for asking about me.
Am on day 10 of mushie stage now. The weight scales hardly moved in the post liquid 2 weeks stage. Now I am happy to report, that very very slowly, it is moving down again. So now I am down from my peak of 90 Kgs to 78 Kgs.
Had lunch with a friend of mine in the city and we went to a Chinese place near my office. I agonised over what I can order that is soft and mushie. I finally ordered the plain Chinese rice porridge ( called congee ) which comes in a bowl. I also asked for a takeaway box and put 80% of the bowl contents into the box and really enjoyed the rest. I would have had about 1/2 - 3/4 of a cup remaining.
Am now more confident that I can eat out as I have a couple of dinners with friends coming up on the weekend as well as during the week - next week.
Regards |

Maren, you must feel so good about yourself. Losing so much on only 6 weeks is quite incredible really, and I bet you feel the surgery was well worth it! Usually the first 10kgs is muich easier to lose than the next 10, so don't dispair if you don't see 2kgs+ per week losses each week from now on. 0.5-1.0ks a weeks is a great loss.
I know what you mean about going out and falling off the wagon. I'm in two minds about this really. I went out for dinner twice last weekend (rare indeed!) and yes, it means no weight loss this week. However to me it was definately worth it, and I felt like the band was in just the right place right now, as I could go out and enjoy myself and eat nice food and not feel like I'm a bit of a food freak who can't eat much at all. It's all about moderation I guess, and having a good quality of life. I know others who find eating out very difficult because they are so restricted in what they can eat, and although I'm sure they must be losing weight faster than me, I wouldn't want to get that tight. It's all a personal choice really. I'm sure I'll eventually get to a stage where I want more restriction so I can lose weight a bit faster, but for now I'm happy to plod slowly along. And by slowly I mean very slowly... on average about 1.5-2kgs a month now. Some weeks nothing, and others a kgs. It must be making a difference though, as the compliments are really coming full force! Better not get a big head, hey!
Cheers all,
Amanda |

Hey everyobe,
Glad to see you're all doing well.
It has taken me ages (about 2 weeks) to get back on the wagon after having a few bad days. I went out 2 weeks ago and had wine & some not too healthy food and I gained 1.5kg, then lost a bit, then gained again...
I've decided I definetly won't be going out too often if it's so hard for me to get back into losing weight.
So I'm on solids now and I've dug out my old Atkins book and have started my 20g carb diet.
In 3 days I've lost about 1.5kg so things are happening again.
I'm now at 91.6kg - 13.2kg lost in about 6 weeks.
I didn't quite get to my 90kg goal by yesterday but I think I'll be there next week.
Waves to everyone, Maren |

Amanda forgot to answer alcohol, I have heard this a lot, maybe it's because we don't eat as much with the alcohol to soak it up etc, maybe it gets absorbed quicker in our top stomach? It's a mystery but makes us a cheap date he he !!

Morning all
bec don't be too down, the next couple of months are a time of healing, the weight loss journey will start soon enough. Some people seem to lose tonnes after the op on liquids etc but lot's don't. Sounds like there isn't much else you should be doing, try and relax, it will definately happen. Re the constipation are you definately drinking enough?
Amanda maybe it is the different makes of brie but the skin just disappeared in my soup! I am going to try it with the philli today, less calories sounds good.
Have a great day everyone.

Hi folks,
I am now 3 weeks post op. Still on mushies. Food is not a problem as I enjoy the Velish soups, the Heinz all natural soups, mashed baked beans and tuna, etc. I am only having the prescribed quantities of these as well.
But I find I am not losing any weight. In fact, since the surgery I have only lost about 2 Kgs. That is a big disappointment to me.
I am still very constipated - even with recommended laxatives. Should I be doing soemthing else ?

Hi Mandy,
Sorry to hear about your family's loss... it must be a difficult time for you, and of course your husband and kids.
I'm glad you are still around... was a bit worried after your re-operation and then not seeing you on the thread for a while.
A weird question: Has anyone else noticed that alcohol affects you differently after the band? I don't frink that often any more, however had a few drinks on the weekend and really felt like I was affected much worse than in the past. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it and I really did drink too much, but I honestly felt there was a difference. Anyone else found this, or read anything about it?
Cheers,
Amanda |
