Lynn,
Hang in there.. it is very early days, and yes, things should get much better. Yes, pain after eating is pretty common when you are getting used to what, how much, and how quickly you can eat. Unlike what I expected, I don't really get a "full" feeling like I used to pre-banding... it is really a painful feeling that tells me that I've eaten too much or too quick or not chewed enough. If food gets stuck and presses on the band even momentarily, it really hurts! Try to breathe slowly and deeply when this happens, and it may help to stand up and walk around. If you are in the early days it is important that you try not to vommit, but after everything has healed sometimes you need to "get rid" of the blockage by bringing it back up. This is the learning stage, whch goes on forever really, but you will get better at it. It is such a ahange (or it was for me) to go from dishing out huge pasta bowls of food, to smalldessert bowls. And even now I find it hard not to finish everything on my plate, so the trick is to dish things up small and then go back for seconds if you really need to.
From the start I could eat all foods, including steak, even now, nearly 12 months on. I see this as a blessing rather than a curse, and according to my surgeon, the way it ideally should be. However, it doesn mean a fair degree of will-power and good decision making, to choose healthy options wisely. You obviously are an expert on dieting (as most of us are!), and the band will make it so much easier, as it is impossible to totally pig out. But yes, for many of us, it takes quite some months to feel like you have true restriction and a sort of fullness with small meals. When is your first fill?
Amanda

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Libbi, Ha Ha, it would have been a major major illness to lose 30kg! No, I mean that I was on about a 29/28.5kg loss, and then after getting gastro for 3 days, lost the last kg to get me down to 30kg loss. Thankfully not the vommitting kind of gastro, as this seems to be a bit of a risk to we banded folk. I, too, typically lose about 1kg a month when I am being good and eating healthy and ercising 3xweek. Have not been to curves for 3 weeks now, so will be getting back on track soon.
Cheers,
Amanda

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbypuss - thank you for your encouragement. My height is 165 cm - 5'5" in old language - I'm 52 yrs old.
The muscle spasm pain is one of the worst I have ever been through - 3 days before my op I apparently had a cyst on my ovaries burst as the surgeon found my abdo full of blood when operating. I have a high pain threshold and just had a couple of panadol for that pain and went to work the next day!! The back spasms on the other hand had me almost reduced to tears - even with Tramadol pain relief and a sleeping tablet I could only last 3 hours before waking in excruciating pain. I am getting wind pain which is basically in the same back area, but I find if I stay upright and walk around, I can cope OK with it.
I am so pleased to hear that the weight will come off - I have inspired a number of friends to start dieting and they ring me with their progress which even though I am pleased for them, cheeses me off after all I have been through and nothing is happening for me at the moment. Have to be careful not to give in to self pity and wallow in bad foods.... I think once I have had the op and a fill I will feel a bit more positive and get myself motivated again. I find I get pain after my evening meal, and the dietitian thinks I may be eating too fast or too much - does anyone else suffer like this?

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hello, Lynn, and welcome.

Was your pain different from the gas pain we've had, and were you given painkillers? I hope so.

You must be thrilled with your weight loss so far, despite being hungry and still pre-fill. What is your height? The period after the operation is so frustrating especially if you've had Optifast pre-op. weight loss. And I didn't weigh myself for seven weeks after the first fill because I felt I'd lost nothing and was eating all the time. I was almost right - I lost just 1.5 kilos.

Checking back, in the two months from pre-Optifast I lost six kilos, so you are doing really well! Over a year I lost 21 kg, now it's 23 but others have lost much more - perhaps I'll put it down to the ageing metabolism! My starting weight was similar to yours at 97.2, now down to 74, so it does happen!

I find the cravings have mainly gone, or that I can want a chocolate or ice cream, but can now stop at one, whereas before I wouldn't dare have even one because of panic and guilt eating. And, wonderfully, the band has really cured me of a craving for carbohydrates.

It's really worth it, so good luck with your journey and the adjustment of your port.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Lisa, you have done so well - what a valiant effort, and it's almost over. What has your weight loss been through all this recent trouble? We are all thinking of you, and all those about-to be bandits out there, let us know how you are going.

Amanda, that sounds like a major virus for that additional weight loss. Hope you are ok now. I plod along at about a kilo a month, despite being almost over restricted. I keep thinking I should get a bit removed, and then I think the restriction might wear off as it has before (not yet though, and it's been two months).

Gabs, are you out there and well?

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi guys, this is my first post. I have had a weight problem since I was 6 yrs old, but decided nearly 7 years ago to try to do something about it. I started dieting at 118kgs and managed to get down to 71kgs about 2 yrs ago. since then my weight has crept up again so I decided to go with the lapband. My pre Optifast weight was 95kgs and I was banded on 15 Dec 08. I am now down to 84.6, which has not moved in 3 weeks. I have not had a fill yet as my port has flipped and I need an op in the next couple of weeks to fix this. I have had heaps of problems with my back since the surgery - in fact woke up from surgery complaining of back pain and not wound pain. After intensive, physio, osteo, massage and chiro the muscle spasms have finally settled. Now I am worried that another operation will set this off again!! I haven't tried steak yet, but I am able to eat ANYTHING!! typical of my body.....?? Does anyone else still get cravings for bad things - I know it is just a tool to help with hunger, but it is still taking a lot of will power to avoid the bad things for me.

Hi Lisa, Welcome home. You are a trouper.. well done for surviving all that. The three port sized scars sound pretty painful... keep up the meds.
Hope all continues to heal ok.

An update: Following a mild virus (not eating much), I weighed in at a 30kg loss today. Whoo Hoo (but fake loss! Fluid. Hee Hee). Still, will see how it goes when I start eating again. Until then I will revel in the glory.....

Cheers all,
Amanda

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi All,

I'm back home from my surgery a bit sore and tender.
The Dr said once he was in her could see a huge obstructive slip and my dinner from the night before was still in there as it just didnt go through the band, he also said I have thickening of the stomach wall and said he wouldn't put any fill in for a long time, we cant risk this happening again.
My port was moved and seems OK where it is and he also repaired my hernia.
The pain this time is slightly less on the inside but worse on the outside, I have 3 port size wounds and 2 smaller wounds.

Last time I had bad wind pain under my ribs and back, this time I have wind pain behind my collar bones..weird.
I'm glad it is all over as its a completely different mindset with the first OP as I wanted it, this time I had to have the op and I felt scared and weepy.
So any way I thought Id fill you all in,

Lisa.

Lisa - don't stress about putting on a little weight. Bound to happen once you move from liquids to mushies - it's totally normal as your body adjusts to getting food again.
At least you know it will eventually come off again.
Take care..lulu

Thanks Mel,

It means a lot to get responses from people who actually know what you are going through, only my husband, 3 work mates( 1 has been banded) and my kids know that I have a band so its been good to talk on here so I dont boil everything up and get stressed out,

thanks again,

Lisa.

Hi Lulu,
thanks for you wishes,
I can still eat, I just fill up really quickly and sometimes it comes back up by itself...yuk...
I did loose a fair bit if weight initially but now I'm just staying the same, I'm a bit worried that when it is all fixed and before a get a fill I might put some of the weight back on.Dr said he wont put a fill in for a long while so everything heals up completely, we dont want any accidental damage to happen again.

Lisa you poor thing..

So I guess having the band moved, the port moved - it's like getting one for the first time.
Have you been able to eat or are you just on liquids? You must be so skinny!!
All the best for Wednesday.. I hope you have an easy and pain free time.
Will be thinking of you.

Hi All,

Went to see the Dr today and I have a large slip(from all the vomiting) and its partially blocking my stomach, having the band repositioned and restitch as well as my hernia repaired and the port moved on Wed. I'm first on the list so at least I dont have to wait all day like last time.

I'm feeling a little worried that I have to go through all that pain again but soon everything will be back to normal,

Lisa.

Hi Lulu,
Actually as much as I was going through a tough time I had a litter of 7 Labrador puppies here to look after, amazing what motherhood will do for you.

Oh Lisa - how horrible for you. You poor thing. I can't even imagine how miserable you were.
All the best for Friday. Try not to stress too much about it. I am thinking that if he was willing to leave the appointment over a week to see you, it shouldn't be too scary.
Will be great to get the op over and done with and get you little alien moved.
All the best. Will be looking out for you.

Hi Amanda,
I'm seeing the Dr on the 30th at his rooms and operation on the 4th Feb.
That's one thing that will be great, getting my port moved, it really looks like I have some sort of growth sticking out(it grosses my kids out that's for sure)

Thanks for all your advise and wishes, I will post as soon as I know something,
Lisa.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Hayley, your weight loss has been so great and quick too. You must be working hard at it. The baby belly is a bummer, as I well know. Some people have skin that snaps right back, and others (like me) have skin that loses all elesticity and has stretch marks and unfortunately will never snap back to quite where it was again (damn those celebrety mothers, flashing their taught tummies mere months after giving birth!). I have resigned myself to a two piece forever now, whereas I was always a bikini girl before (not when obese of course! pre kids I mean). If that is the last think you've got to lose, then well done... you're nearly there, and I'm sure you look fantastic. Have the scales moves below 70 again? I think that they have a mond of their own sometimes, and tease us!
Cheers,
Amanda

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Lisa, oh how scarey for you. Did you see the Dr this Fri just past, or next one coming? Let us all know the outcome. I always deal with anxiety by trying to get as much info as I can, as quickly as I can, so maybe you could ring the Dr or his secretary before the appointment and ask if you should be worried/can they tell you anything over the phone.
Jee, you must have been so sick to have caused a hernia, you poor thing. Sounds like in the end it will all be put right, and you will even get to have your port looking better as a bonus outcome (mine too looks sooooooo awful - sticks out an inch and looks like a huge lump! but I couldn't justify the surgery for that alone, so will have to put up with it). I hope you are feeling better and all is well soon,
Cheers,
Amanda
