Wow, Tanya, a doctor you don't have to persuade and a good rate - go for it. My operation cost $5000 plus anaesthetist, and only about $800 back.

Well I spoke with Lee today and made a date being August 14!!!!!!! Apparently I need to go and see her in May to go thru some things - not sure what exactly.
I also checked out the out of pocket cost and for Dr Chan it is $950, and the rest is all covered. Was very surprised by this.

Hi Tanya
Your goals really would be achievable, I'm sure.
As for work after the operation, I think you have to take it gently after the anaesthetic, but I personally had only shoulder gas pain. And I think taking control of my weight at last put me on quite a high! Having had my own business I always went back to work quickly after an operation, because I had to, but if you can get sick leave take it. I understand the medical certificate doesn't need to be specific, and if you read back we talk about 'vague' reasons to give to work mates who are concerned.
You may find that the surgeon has specific days for that operation and not necessarily a Friday.
Good luck with your plans.

Hello and thanks,
My BMI is 31, I am 164cm tall and weigh 82kg, I would like to think that I could get down to 60kg or hover around 60-62. Mt weight has been an issue on and off since my teenage years and think that this will be another tool that can help me achieve a healthy weight. Look I will be honest I also want to be able to look good (in my eyes) and buy clothes that I love, not ones that I have too.
Was also wondering if anyone went back to work soon after the operation, someone I know said that I would be able to have the op done say ona friday and be back at work on the Tuesday. I sit at a desk all day and dont do manual work (ha ha ha).

PS sd - as for people's reactions, they don't need to know, unless they're really close family or friends. Even so, I've told very few friends, although I'd be very happy to tell strangers if it came up, at the gym for example.

Hello sd and welcome
Yes, I think Gabs was around bmi 29 and really had to fight for it, so as your doctor is happy just go for it! Mine was 33, quite common amongst our lot. What is your bmi, or height and weight?
Don't hesitate. If you've struggled with your weight and been on various diets, as we all have, it is a miracle operation.
Amanda, thinking of you.

I think that Gabbs, the woman who started this thread was a BMI of 20 OR 30. You could look back at the start to hear her journey.
Gabbs, are you still reading? How is it all going?
Hi all, I am off to have my long-awaited breast lift today. Unfortunately, my gurgantuan boobs are empty now, so will look forward to having some firmness again. Will let you know how it goes!
Cheers,

Hi,
Is anyone able to maybe answer the following.
To look at me people would laugh and say what are you considering this kind of surgery for????
What is the smallest BMI/weight that someone has been that has been banded and how have you gone?????
I have seen Dr Chan who has agreed to do the procedure after confirming that my health insurer has no guidelines/criterias.
Spose I am getting a little nervous and have not even penciled in a date as yet!!!! |

Hi, Beclite, thank you for following up. It sounds as though you've needed a lot of patience over the last three months. I've checked back but am not sure what your total loss has been so far. Tell us how the extra fill goes!
Simone (Ethyl), your bmi is the same as mine when I started out (170cm, 97.2 kgs, now 73.9 up and down). I'm trying to think back to before my first fill. I was very careful and couldn't even manage coffee after a meal, so I'm very sure I had restriction, after all the stomach area is so reduced to create a feeling of fullness, even without the fill. And it was all still healing.
I see from my weight note taking that from the day of operation to the day of first fill (six weeks) I lost around four kilos (which quite surprises me when I think back). I lost less, and felt hungry, between the first and second fills, the second topped me up to 6.5mls (six weeks - under two kilos). But at least it's all been down (fingers crossed)!
Keep us posted!

Hello Libbi,
It's funny you know - I think when you're this big you have to lose a lost of weight before you notice it. I don't look any different. My jeans aren't as tight...I think! Hard to tell.
My stats are:
Height: 165cm
Starting weight on Tues 10/2: 91kg
Today's weight: 85.5kg
My starting BMI was over 34 but under 35 - maybe 34.1?
Have been pretty strict. Not entirely strict - had a couple of events last Friday & Saturday and drank quite a bit of alcohol - but pretty good.
I'm quite happy with it, but I imagine I'll regain when I start eating food again. Metabolism kaput, etc.
So before you have your first fill and it was just the band - did you have any restriction at all?
best

Hi everyone,
I have not posted in a while but I do peek into the chat sessions to see how everyone is going. Nothing much has happened to me – weight wise.
I saw the doctor last week. Last time I saw him was in November. There has been no weight change since then. But my feeling is that I did lose another kilo after that but put it back on after Xmas.
I had 6.5 ml in the band and I could eat EVEYTHING and in reasonable amounts too.
Fortunately the doctor recognised my frustration. He has now put in some more fill last week taking it up to 7.5. I do feel more of a restriction now and some foods that I had no problem with to date, hurt me until I puke.
The foods that seem to trouble me are soft bread and some fruits like plums and nectarines. Rice is not a problem but I cant handle chicken or any chunky meat that is dry. Most days I can handle a crumpet topped with a little lite cream cheese and a touch of jam but on some days I cant. I enjoy steamed fish cooked with some Chinese sauces. I have to rack my brains every day as to what to cook for dinner, as I get bored with the same kind of food.
So I am consciously trying to eat less because at the end of the day, the reduction in the quantity of food that we eat is the main factor that will help us lose weight. And exercise of course – which I do very little of ( am guilty !!!).
Although my weight seems to have reached a plateau for the last 3 months, there have been other benefits. The pain in my knee and ankle have reduced considerably. Last time I tested my blood sugar, it was in the normal range. And I definitely have more energy.
I have 2 weddings to attend in March and I would like to lose 2 or 3 kilos by then. A small ambition dont you think ? Lets see. Will keep you posted.
Regards |

Hi Ethyl
I'm hanging around the computer because I'm really meant to be doing some study - it's so nice to have the company! Good for you to have talked to someone encouraging two years post-op. 5.5kg on Optifast is so good, I managed only 2.5 in ten days - you must notice the difference already.
I still kept losing after the liquid phase, my standard 1 kg a month which doubled after the first fill. It's a frustrating period but we need to have patience!
May we ask your statistics, weight, bmi? Your experience will be so encouraging for others too. The halter neck style sounds so attractive and really flattering. If you trawl back you'll see we have a bit to say about breast reduction!
Have a great hospital experience.

Libby & Amanda,
Thanks so much guys. I had a long chat yesterday with a guy who was two years post-op, who thought I would be fine. I think I'll go ahead with the corset. I have to make the decision now because the dress is being designed around it. Tried it on last night though - really not that tight afterall.
I have no problem with the F-word;) The bride wants me to be happy and have a good time - she's a lovely girl. I actually chose the corset because I wanted to wear a halter neck dress but I have gargantuan boobs. Eight hours + in a halter neck bra just won't do it I'm afraid.
I'm on Optifast now - lost 5.5kg in the last week. Is that about right? Do you tend to gain quite a lot back after the liquid phase?
cheers

Is the corset a fashion item or because the bride thinks you're too fat (we're all fat here - we can say these things)?! I personally think you'd be ok, it's not really a painful operation around the stomach, and the entry points are minute.
When I had an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) a few years back I had to wear a very tight corset for six weeks, and that was with a major 20cm incision. If anything it helped with support.
Libbipuss, yet again. |

Drw, have you tried gentle protein like fish pie, with a cheesy sauce and mashed potato and parmesan topping? I find I can eat very little at night so save the rest for about an hour later when I get picky again - it's your dinner, just spread out, the way we're meant too! And mince and pasta is good, too, especially for lazy cooks like me - it really slithers down.
Steak is a shock to the system, but I find I can manage pork butterfly or loin chops with honey soy marinade, sealed in foil and cooked at 170' or so for a couple of hours - it's very tender. I still eat the Optifast bars as a snack for protein, even though they are meant as a meal replacement. I figure that soup for lunch isn't a real meal!

Liv, how did you go with your banding and your friend's wedding?
Lizzardbell, you must be about ready for your operation (still gastric sleeve?). Tell us how you go.
Beclite, what stage are you at now? And good luck to others about to undergo surgery this month.
Gabs, silence since Christmas! Was it all too much?

| I think i have about 5.5mls, there is no way i can eat meat anymore, even when i chew the c*ap out of it, I will try the protein though it might help. I had a bowl of soup for lunch today, looking for something else 20mins later. I will have dry biscuits with cheese. |

Ethyl, good luck with the surgery next week. Although noone really looks forward to the surgery itself, it is so exciting to be embarking on the journey, and so wonderful dreaming of the new, healthier you to come! Are you on Optifast?
I'm not sure what kind of corset you're talking about, or how tight. I think that 2 + weeks out it is still pretty soon after surgery, and you'll probably be a bit tender. It really took me 10 days before I could even bear to drive, even though the surgeon said to wait a week. I guess you could ask your surgeon, but by that time it might just be personal choice. The wounds have probably closed by then.
Cheers,
Amanda |

Hi guys,
Have been reading your posts, and I want to thank you for helping me make my decision to go ahead with the surgery. Feeling great about it!
I'm in next week - being banded on the 24th. I have a question for all those post-op people on here though:
I'm in my brother's wedding on the 14th of march - about 18 days after surgery. I'm a bridesmaid, and originally it was planned that I would be wearing a corset. In fact, I'm seeing the dress maker this weekend for the main fitting and I've just bought the (very expensive) corset for the fitting. Of course, it's just occurred to me that I probably won't be able to wear something very restrictive that puts pressure on my tummy/port so son after the op.
What do you think?
Thanks!

Hi drw
Yes, more protein! Try five small meals a day, or three plus two filling snacks. I add lentils to my lunchtime soup for the protein, and leftover curried chicken or lamb. And we're always being told to have a lot of water during the day.
What is your total fill amount? I'm not sure about the decimal points but I think I'm up to 8 mls, the latest being (point) .2 mls in December (and I think it should be the maximum for me, from the feel of it). Despite the extra fill I've lost only 2 ks (up and down) since then, but at least it moves eventually.
What fills do others out there have?

Maybe eating more "solid" food than veggies would last longer? Have you tried meat or pasta? I'm the same.. some foods seem to digest (or go through the band?) quite quickly. Other times I eat something like a sandwich and feel full for ages.
0.2mls sounds like such small amount! My surgeon only did 2 fills on me, but they were both big - 5mls and 3mls at a time!
Cheers,

| Hi everyone, need some advice. I am due for another fill next monday. I had .02ml in last time, made a huge difference, but I am still hungry all the time. I can only manage a small bowl of vegies for tea, but once I am finished 1/2hr later am hungry again. I have not had any change on the scales since first week in Jan, i am worried that if i get anymore fill i will end up with an overfill. Its just that the fills/consultations cost so much i cant afford to go back 2 days in a row and pay twice. Any suggestions?? Maybe i have hit a plateau. |

Hi Lynn, Sorry if I offended you re eating in lounge chair... I made that assumption as hubby and I do it all the time!! Bad habit I know. Kids to bed then straight to twin recliners, then ZZZZZZZZZ... Shameful! Not long to re-op now. I have an op on the 24th (not band-related - breast lift. well, I guess partially weight-loss related LOL). I should be getting in heaps of exercise, but totally lacking in motivation. :( Need to get back to it, as don't want to be technically healthy (weight), but not healthy (fitness). Will try to do some next week.
Cheers all,
Amanda |
