Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Amanda

I had a pretty rough weekend but have turned the corner and can now almost lie in bed. The pain and nausea are much less and I'm feeling much more alert.

I'm seeing the surgeon this afternoon and will be interested to see how much weight I've lost.

Have had no desire to eat and have happily stuck to liquids. Missing going to the gym and taking vitamins, though.

I had that years ago, the feeling something like a piece of apple etc is stuck in your throat.
It was not band related, as i was skinny at this time.
so I went to the doctor and he said it was stress.
funny thing, my daughter has just had the exact same thing.
she is as skinny as anything.so it may not be related to your banding. just a thought.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi guys
Just wanted to let you know about my progress. Started at 95 at pre-optifast, and had surgery on Dec 15th. I had good weight loss to start with, but had come to a plateau for the past 6 weeks. I had surgery again on Thursday to correct my flipped port and the Dr put in 2mls which is apparently the first fill I have had, as there was not any put in during the initial surgery. Strangely my weight had gone up since Thurs, most probably fluid from the swelling. Pleased to say it has dropped a fraction today so I have now lost 12 kgs since Dec. Would like to lose another 15kgs which looks like being a slow journey. I find I can still eat anything and quiet decent amounts which isn't good and I am still having to use a lot of will-power. I am feeling pretty good now apart from a feeling of something stuck in my throat all the time, which I even wake up with, so it has nothing to do with eating something too fast or not chewing properly -so don't know what that is all about - anyone else experienced this?

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbi. Thanks for asking my dear! I am travveling well one week post breast lift surgery. Am not really in pain except when accidently bumped or squeezed by over-zealous children. Am really looking forward to Thursday, when bandages come off, and I get the big unveiling. Am looking forward to seeing the result! Still, I can already tell that things are looking better. LOL! Will let you know Thursday.
Cheers,
Amanda
PS. Had a stress attack as when I weighed myself post surgery I had put on 3KGs OVERNIGHT!!!!! Kept telling myself it must be fluid, however as days went by I wondered if it was just some terrible, permanent weight gain. However, one week later it has almost come off, give or take half a KG - THANK GOD!!!!!! Now if I could just stop eating those blessed mini easter eggs I'm sure the last half a kg would come off eventually!!! Heh heH.

Bruce,Claudia & any other newly banded;, how are the recoveries going? Hopefully the worst is over, and you are starting to feel hungry - a good sign, but one you will most likely wish wasn't there. Most people feel pretty hungry on the liquid stage, and dream for mushies, and don't really start to feel full till solids. So good luck guys!
Cheers,
Amanda

Hello Ethyl-Simone. Welcome to the other side! No matter about the money - I had top cover and was still out of pocket $5000, and it is worth every single penny. You've waited long enough!

Bruce, what a good report: life is indeed good after banding.

Claudia, keep us posted and happy surgery.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi folks,
I started the Optifast stage with a BMI of 34. Type II diabetes was the deciding factor for the doctors. I dropped weight to BMI 32 on Optifast, which the surgeon said won't go back on. With Top Hospital cover from Medibank Private I'm out of pocket $3,662.45 so far. Two days after surgery I reckon I'm probably past the pain relief stage. I've had a dream run so far. No nausea and not much discomfort. Yesterday my recliner chair was a problematic when it came to exiting. Today I have that sorted out. Apart from the slight neck ache, which I speculate is from tipping it back a long way for intubation, I have groin pain I don't understand. It feels like I've done the splits and strained muscles. I've been online to work and made some contribution, but my boss chased me away :-) I planned to be back in the office next Monday morning, but my boss's boss says wait to see what my surgeon says on Monday arvo before coming in. Everyone is being very supportive so far. Life's good.

I'm sitting on the bed at the Avenue waiting to go to surgery. I'm not up until 5:30 and as it's not even 2:30 I fear I'll die of thirst.

Sorry to thear about your health benefit bad luck. I rang mine 3 times and they gave me different rebates each time for the same procedure number. Grrr.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi all,

I had my op on Tuesday so I thought I'd give you an update.

First of all - I received a call from the Waverley Private on Monday to let me know that my level of private health cover didn't cover the hospital expenses (Medibank Private Basic Hospital + Extras). Now, obviously, this is entirely my own fault. I got health insurance 18 mths ago specifically for the lap band procedure and had a vague conversation with the Medibank sales agent about it but didn't check the specific item number and the restricted services with my level of cover. This meant that the day before the operation I was faced with a choice:
1) upgrade my cover and wait another 12 months for the op
2) pay the hospital fee of approx $7000 on top of the surgeon's fees.

I had prepared mentally, physically, socially etc for the op so I decided to go ahead. I don't exactly have $7000 lying around in a drawer but I could access it without too much strain, so chose to pay for it. Just mentioning this so that no one else makes a similarly stupid mistake!

I went straight into theatre on Tuesday at 8am and came out of the anesthetic around 10 or 11. I was in and out of consciousness all day. The wounds were sore but not too troublesome - very much like stiff abdominal exercise. I did have quite a bit of pain associated with trapped gas, and I couldn't keep anything down. The nurses brought me apple juice to sip and it came straight back up. Later, they gave me icecream and jelly. I managed less than a teaspoon of each and then had quite a severe vomit. only once, mind you. decided to stay overnight just in case of complications.

Yesterday came home and felt better, though still had sharp pains associated with burping. Had no problem keeping fluids down yesterday - had tomato soup, water, icecream during the day. Not much but no issues whatsoever.

Had planned to go back to work tomorrow but not sure at this point. Still feeling quite sore and tired. will see!

Wow, Tanya, a doctor you don't have to persuade and a good rate - go for it. My operation cost $5000 plus anaesthetist, and only about $800 back.

Well I spoke with Lee today and made a date being August 14!!!!!!! Apparently I need to go and see her in May to go thru some things - not sure what exactly.

I also checked out the out of pocket cost and for Dr Chan it is $950, and the rest is all covered. Was very surprised by this.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Tanya

Your goals really would be achievable, I'm sure.

As for work after the operation, I think you have to take it gently after the anaesthetic, but I personally had only shoulder gas pain. And I think taking control of my weight at last put me on quite a high! Having had my own business I always went back to work quickly after an operation, because I had to, but if you can get sick leave take it. I understand the medical certificate doesn't need to be specific, and if you read back we talk about 'vague' reasons to give to work mates who are concerned.

You may find that the surgeon has specific days for that operation and not necessarily a Friday.

Good luck with your plans.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hello and thanks,

My BMI is 31, I am 164cm tall and weigh 82kg, I would like to think that I could get down to 60kg or hover around 60-62. Mt weight has been an issue on and off since my teenage years and think that this will be another tool that can help me achieve a healthy weight. Look I will be honest I also want to be able to look good (in my eyes) and buy clothes that I love, not ones that I have too.

Was also wondering if anyone went back to work soon after the operation, someone I know said that I would be able to have the op done say ona friday and be back at work on the Tuesday. I sit at a desk all day and dont do manual work (ha ha ha).

PS sd - as for people's reactions, they don't need to know, unless they're really close family or friends. Even so, I've told very few friends, although I'd be very happy to tell strangers if it came up, at the gym for example.

Hello sd and welcome

Yes, I think Gabs was around bmi 29 and really had to fight for it, so as your doctor is happy just go for it! Mine was 33, quite common amongst our lot. What is your bmi, or height and weight?

Don't hesitate. If you've struggled with your weight and been on various diets, as we all have, it is a miracle operation.

Amanda, thinking of you.

I think that Gabbs, the woman who started this thread was a BMI of 20 OR 30. You could look back at the start to hear her journey.

Gabbs, are you still reading? How is it all going?

Hi all, I am off to have my long-awaited breast lift today. Unfortunately, my gurgantuan boobs are empty now, so will look forward to having some firmness again. Will let you know how it goes!

Cheers,
Amanda

Hi,

Is anyone able to maybe answer the following.

To look at me people would laugh and say what are you considering this kind of surgery for????

What is the smallest BMI/weight that someone has been that has been banded and how have you gone?????

I have seen Dr Chan who has agreed to do the procedure after confirming that my health insurer has no guidelines/criterias.

Spose I am getting a little nervous and have not even penciled in a date as yet!!!!

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi, Beclite, thank you for following up. It sounds as though you've needed a lot of patience over the last three months. I've checked back but am not sure what your total loss has been so far. Tell us how the extra fill goes!

Simone (Ethyl), your bmi is the same as mine when I started out (170cm, 97.2 kgs, now 73.9 up and down). I'm trying to think back to before my first fill. I was very careful and couldn't even manage coffee after a meal, so I'm very sure I had restriction, after all the stomach area is so reduced to create a feeling of fullness, even without the fill. And it was all still healing.

I see from my weight note taking that from the day of operation to the day of first fill (six weeks) I lost around four kilos (which quite surprises me when I think back). I lost less, and felt hungry, between the first and second fills, the second topped me up to 6.5mls (six weeks - under two kilos). But at least it's all been down (fingers crossed)!

Keep us posted!

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hello Libbi,

It's funny you know - I think when you're this big you have to lose a lost of weight before you notice it. I don't look any different. My jeans aren't as tight...I think! Hard to tell.

My stats are:
Height: 165cm
Starting weight on Tues 10/2: 91kg
Today's weight: 85.5kg

My starting BMI was over 34 but under 35 - maybe 34.1?

Have been pretty strict. Not entirely strict - had a couple of events last Friday & Saturday and drank quite a bit of alcohol - but pretty good.

I'm quite happy with it, but I imagine I'll regain when I start eating food again. Metabolism kaput, etc.

So before you have your first fill and it was just the band - did you have any restriction at all?

best

Simone

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi everyone,
I have not posted in a while but I do peek into the chat sessions to see how everyone is going. Nothing much has happened to me – weight wise.

I saw the doctor last week. Last time I saw him was in November. There has been no weight change since then. But my feeling is that I did lose another kilo after that but put it back on after Xmas.

I had 6.5 ml in the band and I could eat EVEYTHING and in reasonable amounts too.

Fortunately the doctor recognised my frustration. He has now put in some more fill last week taking it up to 7.5. I do feel more of a restriction now and some foods that I had no problem with to date, hurt me until I puke.

The foods that seem to trouble me are soft bread and some fruits like plums and nectarines. Rice is not a problem but I cant handle chicken or any chunky meat that is dry. Most days I can handle a crumpet topped with a little lite cream cheese and a touch of jam but on some days I cant. I enjoy steamed fish cooked with some Chinese sauces. I have to rack my brains every day as to what to cook for dinner, as I get bored with the same kind of food.

So I am consciously trying to eat less because at the end of the day, the reduction in the quantity of food that we eat is the main factor that will help us lose weight. And exercise of course – which I do very little of ( am guilty !!!).

Although my weight seems to have reached a plateau for the last 3 months, there have been other benefits. The pain in my knee and ankle have reduced considerably. Last time I tested my blood sugar, it was in the normal range. And I definitely have more energy.

I have 2 weddings to attend in March and I would like to lose 2 or 3 kilos by then. A small ambition dont you think ? Lets see. Will keep you posted.

Regards
