Hi Frostie,

Just checking in....re your belt post 3 days ago (3 days! where have i been!) Thats a great idea, but i think i only have 2 shirts a belt would work with, and no dresses :( . So i'm stuck with the bag lady image i think, LOL!

But seriously, its not quite that bad, I do have a limited selection of smaller sized clothes. I think i'm just a bit self concious to wear anything a bit more fitted yet. I'm sure i'll survive ;)...isn't it funny where our brains go...i'm more self concience walking around in a fitted size 14/16 t-shirt than i was in a size 20/22 How silly is that!

I'm not really eating much now (and the weight is not moving!!).

Yes I can eat potatoes.

I cannot eat all dairy foods, anything that contains wheat, and fructose which includes fruits (especially stone fruit), pears, apples, tomatoes, onions, stock (as it may contain onion of some sort), sorbitol (in chewing gum, diet foods), honey, glucose syrup, many vegetables (lucky as I dont really eat any except corn capscium, potato hot that is)

Sorry to intrude, Tanya. I thought perhaps you were not too sure about going ahead but you sound determined - good on you. I'm not up on those food intolerances from a medical point of view, but I imagine you will eat what you're eating now, just pureed, thick soups and casseroles and the like. Can you eat potatoes - they would give a nice creamy texture in place of yoghurt, cream etc. Tell us what you can eat, and others may have suggestions for recipes that they've used.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbi,
yay for belts! I have 8 mls, and can still eat all foods, steak etc. chicken in some forms is hard, but bbq chicken is ok - softer. I still get quite hungry on some days, and can eat a normal sized meal, or a whole sandwich, and still look for food. Crazy. I begged my surgeon for more fill last week and he turned me down ;(. It's because I'm still vomiting about 1-2 times a week. He doesn't want to risk a slippage. I have an appointment in 2 months, and he will review. I think that when I get a blockage and need to throw it up its because I've eaten too fast or not chewed enough, or taken that extra bite too much cause it's just so yummy. Still addicted to food I'm afraid. It's been 3 weeks since my breast lift, and I've done no exercise. Scared of putting on inches again... Inevidable really. Hope to get back on track in the next few weeks when I'm alowed to exercise again.
Cheers,
Amanda

Hi Libbi,

My increased benefits on my health insurance dont take effect till Aug, thats why the wait to have it done. Getting a little worried regarding food that I will be able to eat, as I cannot eat wheat, dairy, and fructose (many fruits/vegetables/onions etc) - little worried about the liquid/mushy stage.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hello sd and friends
As for missing favourite foods, the thrill of weight loss far outweighs that feeling, and because I now have control I seem to be able to eat a little bit of all those things I would never even dare to have in the house, a tablespoon of nuts with a glass of wine, real icecream. It's as though the banding sets right our hunger mech*an*ism* (naughty word to yahoo!) and I no longer panic eat.

At present I really don't want to eat much at all, but that may be an overfill at 8 mls. What's the experience of others at around 8 mls? Since the start I have lost interest in carbohydrates, bread etc; I just have a piece of toast spread out (two halves) for breakfast and after, and the wonderfully handy Cruskits with cheese spread or tuna during the day, plus packet soup. Just lately I've hardly managed any dinner without a blockage (too quick?). I'm having a bit of trouble with grapes, they take a lot of concentration, and I definitely can't eat croissants (just as well). I also find that if I'm a bit tense about something (even if I haven't realised it) the body seems to freeze up and I get a blockage.

The manual handed out by our nurse educator recommends five 'meals' or snacks a day, so that we don't get hungry and eat quickly when mealtime comes. I keep the delicious Optifast bars on hand. You're waiting a long time for the op., sd, is that your choice?

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
It's ok, Amanda, that message really helped me, although my fat clothes were really loose on me to start with. That belt at 10 cms is very fashionable. I've done a similar thing, but worn lower on the hips, and have dug out some very fancy leather belts with pull through buckles and feathers, from 20 years ago! Some of us need to be reminded of flair! I was silly enough to buy clothes after six months, thinking it couldn't get any better, now they just fall off, mainly pants. I go everywhere hitching up.

Don't worry about breast lift scars - I have none to speak of, and whoever's going to be looking won't care about a tiny line!

Bell, I'm absolutely thrilled with my slow and steady progress. I was never sure it would work for me (we all seem to have that self doubt).

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Libbi, Amazing but true: I am still wearing some of my old (30kg heavier) clothes... how you ask: belts! Yes, they have been a fashion-saver for me, and thankfully, kinda still "in fashion" therefore, lots to choose from. Not the 'put in the loops on your pants to keep them up' belts, but the 'wear over your dresses, longer tops' belts. My fave is a tan leather 10cm wide belt that goes with everthing. I Wore it over a way too big shirt the other day, and it looked nice and slimming! I also wear belts with heaps of my old dresses, or a new, slim fitting jacket or cardie to suck all the excess material in. Give it a try. Cheaper than buying a whole new wordrobe that'll last only a month or so. Cheers, Amanda

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbi and Amanda,

Amanda, why did i think you were in sydney, lol! Even for a good boob job i don't think i could justify a stay in Melbourne. Although all that shopping has its appeals ;) I once had a sales assisatnt at Grace Brothers Parramatta as it was back then put her hand over my boob in the middle of the bra section and announce to the world that yes i was infact a D cup. I didn't know where to look, ROFLMAO!!!

Clothes are annoying the hell out of me at the moment. All my favourite things have kind of gone from being too small, skipped over fitting and gone straight to sack :( I thought i'd at least get a good-by wear out of everything. Oh well, too bad, so sad! I think i'm going to look like a bag lady for the rest of the year, hehe!

Libbi, I think i was just lucky, not that i'm complaining, mind you ;) A lot of people don't lose a real lot on opti. But i did have to do a total food replacement, ie 3 opitmeals a day, only allowed a few veges. No meat etc.
If you're still over weight at 73.3 you must be a shortie? (My magic number is 75.7) 21k in 12 months is about the recomended average monthly loss, i bet that doesn't make you feel any better, lol! We only race ourselves don't we. So how much more do you have to go?

I was suposed to start on real food today as a matter of fact, but i couldn't stand mushies for another second in the end, so i kind of slid into soft stuff like egg things, mac'n'cheese and the like about 4 days ago. But tonight i actually had food i had to cut up with a knife and eat off a fork, WOOHOO!!! And what did i have? Red Rooster Clasic Roast of course..and she wonders how she got so fat, lol!.. I can probably get 2 more meals out of the 1 serve of it though. It was heaven! And only 228 cal for the amount i ate. No probs with that :)

Keep well everyone
Bell

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
I'm really hanging out for the end of Mushies. I've only completed one week of it so far. On Thursday and Friday my colleagues persuaded me to go to lunch with them. We have an excellent eatery nearby, and I opted for a small veggie biryani with a sloppy chana dhal on Thursday and chicken biryani with sloppy mixed lentils on Friday. There wasn't much in there that required any chewing to reduce it to a puree. So I don't think I've been too bad. But the dietician's specified quantities do leave me ravenous. About now I'm ready to puree a large pizza! I'm trying to drink continually to fill the void, but that results in being more tired than I am used to (due to being up half the night). Weight loss since the op, 19 days ago, is 0-2kg (I can vary by that much in a day). So I'm down 10-12kg since starting Optifast on 11-Feb. That is fine by me. I'm looking forward to first fill on 31-Mar to deal with the hunger. Given how well it has gone so far, I'm somewhat nervous that it won't stay this good.

Hi Libbi,

So glad you recapped a little. We sound similar, my BMI is 31 - 83kgs and MY ideal would be 60kg give or take a few, I am being banded in Aug and are hoping it will help as my will power is non existant. I tried today to wear my jeans which I bought 3 years ago (the first pair in over 10) and could not do it at all - the scales arent going up (will have to put in anew battery to be sure) but clothes are not fitting at all! Good on you for pushing the issue with your doctor, I too had a hurdle or two with mine. I am scared though that it wont work, but also that I will miss my favourite foods, does this thought pass, does the band stop you eating that you end up not wanting it in the first place.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Bell, as Amanda says, your weight loss is absolutely spectacular! You did so well on Optifast: three plus weeks was quite a challenge, but so worthwhile (I lost a measly 2.5 kg in 10 days). Did I read somewhere the weight loss is quicker with the sleeve? You must be unrecognisable.

As for my modest journey, thank you for asking. I'll bore you all again, because when I first read these posts before my op. 18 months back I was so interested in the details of everyone's progress. I'm the perfect example of a 'slow mover', but getting there (well almost) in the end.

Pre-Optifast weight 97.2 bmi 33.6, banded 23 10 07.
Today 73.2 bmi 25.3 - still overweight!

In the first six months I lost around 14 kgs, in 12 months around 21 kgs, that's what I mean by slow - but it's happened!
Before the operation the surgeon said did I want to bother, as people on an average lose just 50-60% of what they should to be a normal weight, in my case 16-18 kgs. Did I want to bother??!! And so far it's 24 kgs. After endless other diets where I've lost I've put it all on again. Fingers crossed this time as I'm now physically incapable of over eating with 8 mls of fill, but who knows how the body works - we've all seen the weight creep up despite our best efforts at starving ourselves (and I can eat nuts and chocolate and ice cream, but am trying to watch that). Is there anyone out there well into their banded life - are you maintaining loss OK?

Gabs, you have shared so much of your history with us, do let us know how you are, we're concerned (I think I can speak for others who've gained so much from your contribution).

Do keep us posted on how you are going, Bell, are you back to normal food? And, Bruce, you must be past mushies by now. For anyone else at that stage, I added curry flavour to everything (well, not the fruit smoothies....)- it makes the dullest food delicious, even the pre-op. diet soup.

Sounds like you are doing great Bruce.... very org an is ed (yahoo thought that was an ofensive word!) with the frozen meals! Mushies is hard, but hang in there. Not worth overdoing things while the wounds are healing. The cauliflower & brie soup on the recipe board was soooo yummy. Basically just a whole cut-up cauliflower, covered with chicken stock, boiled until mushy, a wheel of brie (skin removed) melted through. Add salt, pepper, and sweet chilli saice if desired, then blend. Yumm! OK cause you don't eat a big portion. How is the weight loss going?

Hi Bell,
Welcome back! My God - you have lost soooooo much weight (and cms!!) from just January - it is unbelievable. Well done to you - you must feel amazing. And your journey is just starting! You can really look forward to all the clothing sales coming up - and what about next summer?! Something to really look forward to.

My plastic surgeon was Mr Tim Pitt. Operating out of Epworth Eastern, Box Hill (Melbourne). He also operates in some city hospitals. I would totally recommend him... very respectful, quietly confident, experienced, reassuringly mature (ie, not tanned, 40ish, bleached teeth & highlighted hair like the other one I went to! LOL). I am getting used to my new look, and really looking forward to when I can get into a nice, shaped bra. I wonder if my bra size has changed? Will have to get a proper fitting no doubt. Great (sarcasm).

Cheers,
Amanda

Hi Libbi
Yeah, I know I am impatient, but I would love to be at goal weight by end of July before I go to Thailand so I can buy new clothes etc. I have apparently inspired so many friends and work colleagues to go on a diet, and they are losing more weight than I am which is most depressing!! Not sure how the port flipped, Dr said when he fixed it that he had stitched it down - I would have thought it would be have stitched to start with??? My pre optifast BMI was 34.9, now 30.3. I only have 2mls of fill and find I can still eat anything. hopefully my visit this week I can get another fill.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Mushies look like getting tedious fast. I bought some veggies, chicken & fish for a cookup on Saturday arvo. The end result was a bunch of meal sized containers of food in the freezer. I've got 4 different varieties, but I still think I'm going to have to apply sauces to get some more variation. I find the lack of textures removes so much from the enjoyment that I have to make the flavours more intense. Generally things are still going suspiciously smoothly. I was even talked into a light beer by a neighbour with no adverse effect. I'm nervous of getting overconfident and stuffing up in some major way.

Hi Auto

The Dr O'brian book is very popular book. There are a few other good ones too, but they all pretty much agree with each other.

As with all of these books, the measurements they give you are guidelines only. There are a lot of bandits out there who have to have a morning and afternoon snack too. But yeah, the 1/2 a cup per meal is the ideal. Also knowing that you should eat slowly you should stop eating after 20 minutes.

Hi,

Has anyone resdy the book by Professor O'Brien - The Lap Band Solution? Lee at Dr Chans rooms suggested I read this - I have read it and was wondering if it is all fairly true - in one section it states that the amount of food eaten only 3 times a day that being breakie, lunch and dinner is about half a cup!

Lactose intolerant is fairly common, i think it causes a bit of a problem with the optifast, but don't quote me on that :)

The fructose malabsorbtion, can't say i've ever even heard of that. But what a bummer that would be!

As long as you can keep your protien up you should be ok cause thats what you always need to eat first. I'm guessing you already have some strategies in place for ensuring you get enough fibre and vitamins & minerals? You could probably just continue with that.

You should probably talk to your surgeon and dietition. They would be able to advise you better :)

Good luck

Hi all,

Was wondering if there was anyone out there who has been banded and is also lactose intolerant and has fructose malabsorption (which includes tomatoes, onions, wheat, fruit etc). I am being banded in August and have the above issues with food, which restricts what I can eat - maybe this will be a good thing, add it to all the things I wont be able to eat once banded and it will leave not much (he he he).

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi everyone,

Sorry i haven't been around for ages. The thread went really quiet for a while then i just kind of lost track of it!

Just to bring you all up to speed...My sleeve went really well back on the 16th Feb. Turned out i had a pretty good hernia too which he fixed while he was there. I was up and walking the halls by night time and chucking laps the next day. After they took my drip out on day 3 i was actually doing a bit of a jog, but only for the hell of it, hehe! I'm coming up on 4 weeks now. I am so pleased i eventually decided on the sleeve. Once i got my brain around the whole 'cutting out part of your perfectly good stomach' part I couldn't be happier :) :) :).....no offence to all you wonderful banded people! my motto is 'to each his own' you just need to be happy with your own decisions :)

I was 100.6 my first day on Optifast, 21/1/09. 89.9 the morning of my op and this morning i was 83.5 and my BMI has gone from 33.2 to 27.5. Its strange to look at it now, i've, dare i say 'only' lost 6.4 since the op! It feels like so much more than that! Although it is only 3.5 weeks so yep, i'd have to say i'm thrilled with that! I have also gone from sizs 22 to size 14 since the 21st Jan, cool!

Hi Amanda,
I'm so glad your boob op went well! Thats sooo on my to-do list LOL! Any result that isn't looking at the ground is a good one in my book 8) I might have to find out your surgeon's details for future use.

Hi Libbi,

How are you going? Gawd in an embarrasing mental lapse i can't remember where your up to in wour weight loss journey *blush* :0 Could you remind me, sorry... I can assure you its not lack of interest its a really bad memory thanks to a bad bout of Meningitis a few years back :)

Have a great day everyone

Congratulations, Amanda, on a successful operation. Going on my experience the scars will disappear very quickly; it's amazing how painless it is, too. I'm sure the readers of this board don't mind straying a bit -'improvement' operations are on the minds of a lot of us, and no doubt the occasional male who visits can cope with the 'visualisation exercise'!

How are you going, Bruce, with your mushies diet? And Simone, too?

Hi again,
Libbi, I am still getting used to my new look... first impression was "where are my boobs????"! It is a strange optical illusion that puzzled me.... the surgeon assured me the volume was the same, only pulled higher and tighter, however to me it looked so different, like pubesent teenage bobs to be honest (although with all those scars!). It was only when I tried on one of my bras and the volume still looked the same that I finally believed him! So strange. I think I need to get used to them some more. Still, apart from feeling smaller, I can tell you that there is NO SAG AT ALL!!!! They vertually point upwards LOL.

Sorry to change the topic of the boards for those not interested!

Glad to hear that those recovering are starting to feel better. It is a bonus if you do not feel hungry!

Cheers all,
Amanda
