Hi Amanda, Sandi, Tanya and all
Hello to band oz J. How useful your update is, and what a timely reminder to us all. It is so encouraging to read that you maintained for five years, and I can imagine how frustrated you must be with the weight gain.

I know you are about to go into surgery but when you report back (and you will let us know how you go?), will you tell us if there was any hint of the band slippage, or did you just start needing to eat more and more? And did the change happen quickly, or did it creep up over a longer period?

I know how fragile this weight loss can be. I've put on 2.5 kgs in the month since having 1 ml fill removed after a blockage. Like you, J, I have the self-destructive panic eating, and the right amount of fill seems to calm me down and let me take control of things.

Yes, I saw the doctor yesterday who topped me back up .6 to a total of 7.6 (.4 less than when I had the blockage). I feel happily restricted now. Fingers crossed for the downward spiral.

Interesting, J, to hear about the new band.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
I had lapband surgery in 2004. My stats were:
165cm
96kg
BMI 35.3

My lowest weight was 71kg (BMI 26.1). Then after 5 years of maintained weight, I started to put on a bit of weight, then a bit more, felt little restriction at all, was able to eat whatever I fancied....

I had a barium swallow that revealed the band or stomach had slipped, i.e. more stomach above the band allowing much more food in. This is apparently quite a common complication.

I'm due for re-do banding, with the new Realize band (more like a cuff) on Thursday 23/4/09. This band allows for less restriction because the fluid is spread over a greater area. Discourages the common slippage problem.

Currently my stats are:
165cm
87kg
BMI 32

I obviously have a food compulsion. I know I shouldn't eat, but if I can, I will, even when I'm not hungry. Self-destruction/sabotage .
Looking forward to losing weight again. I'll keep you all posted.

J.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbi, let us know how your new fill goes. I've changed my mind about asking for more, as I still ... er, vommit, too regularly (ie, about once a week). It really changes how much I can eat. Sometimes heaps, others, not so much. Yes, I've got 8 mls. Yes, the 60's are so close now, yet somehow so far. Then again... every milestone seemed that way. First it seemed amazing to be in the 90's, then to be in the 80's seemed like an impossibility. To be in the 70's seemed like that fat days were coming to an end. To be in the 60's would just plain feel THIN! Not something I'm used to feeling at all.I would like to be 68kg for second honeymoon next Jan (that was wedding weight, and it will be 10 year anniversary). Who knows if I get motivated to get there. At present I am cruising and happy to maintain. Will enjoy the reprieve for a while.

Sandi, at present the scarring is REALLY obvious, but it's only been 2 months. I took a long term view, and hoped for minimal visable scarring after 12 months, and hopefully barely obvious after the 2 year mark (optimal scar fade time apparently). At present the scars under the bust are the widest and most obvious. The ones around the nipple and down are already pretty faded and fine, flat lines, so I think they will become less obvious more quickly. I think the onse underneath are there to stay (but hopefully will become skin coloured over time). Obviously, everthing is hidden in even a low cut bra, but they say that you cant avoid scarring aith this surgery, so it is something to consider... especially if you are looking for "Mr Right" (did I mis-interpret that?). You can always say you had a breast reduction (why does that sound more accaptable? Maybe that's just me), as that is what the breast-lift surgery technically is. They do exactly the same op, and it is the same medicare item. They just remove skin, not tissue for a lift.

Anyway all, have a nice day.
Cheers,
Amanda

Sandi, as we've discussed before - re scarring and breast lift, mine is minimal, and it's underneath, and whoever is looking will be concentrating on other things.....

Good luck with the fishing haul. There are one or two nice hunks on "Trawlermen', a documentary on SBS (but at my age perhaps everything is a nice hunk). Sorry, Bruce, if you're out there, girly talk again.

Hi, sd, go for the early date! Four weeks is stacks of recovery time: I set up and operated a new retail business (on my feet all the time) three weeks after a hyst *** omy (yahoo says that's a naughty word). I don't see the band surgery as at all invasive. You'll just sleep extra well at night, and you'll be so thrilled with your decision the adrenalin will keep you going. It makes a difference if it's your own business, too.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Amanda, 55kg!!! We'd have ribs and things - imagine that! I've always thought of a goal weight around 72kg (the best I've ever done in thirty years of diets), but now that I'm close I'd love to get to 68kg, which is way better than the average estimate for banding (according to my doctor).

On an aside, we all report losing much more than the average 60% - who are those mystery people who lose only 60%? Perhaps we're being hasty, because my great fear is putting on. So, Amanda, I'm not frustrated, just fearful, and you know what that means - running for the bikkie barrel (talk about self-destruction). And the clothes I've bought don't allow much room for expansion - the fashions are so clingy!

Anyhow, after the removal of fill because of blockage the doctor told me to return to see about top-up. That's tomorrow so hopefully I'll be on the straight and narrow again.

Remind me again -your fill is 8mls? Your loss is amazing and an encouragement to us all.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbi, and Amanda, and all.
Yes, am still losing, usually about a half a kg a week, perhaps a tiny bit more, and my goal is to get to between 56 to 58kgs, but 58 i would be thrilled. Im only 165cm, so that is a normal weight range. Im now hovering at the 68.8 mark, so I can see the light beaming at the end of the tunnel.
Amanda, I was advised to wait til I had finished losing all of my weight til I had a lift, I guess to achieve maximum results, Im not sure, you would be a much better judge. May I ask how obvious the scarring is, ie can you see the line visibly, although I understand its not the kind of thing ppl may want to hear on here...lol. My biggest fear is being left with massive scarring.
And the other reason I need to wait, is because it will be self funded again, so I need to budget accordingly.
And Im not sure if, once I have lost yet another 10 - 12 kilos, will I need some more volume or not. So thats a few reasons why Im holding off for about 12 months.
In the interim, I will keep doing what I am doing, enjoying life to the max with my super kids!
Have a great week everyone, Im off camping with the kids for the next few days, never know what I may reel in , maybe a big hunky fisherman...LOL.
Oh Dear, a girl can only live in hope..lol.
Cheers, Sandi.xxx

Hi Auto,

Most people need a week or two. If you're sitting at a desk all day you could be ok sooner. I wouldn't like to be standing all day so soon after tho, especially at one of those fairs. Used to do them when i was younger, *shudder*!

Hi,

I have arranged to have my surgery on 14/8 this year-as my increased benefits on my health insurance dont make be eligible till 1/7. I am not maybe wanting to bring it closer to my eligibility date - Iam eating like a machine which has no off button!!!!!

Need to know what the recovery time was. I at the moment am booked in for a Friday op and back to work on the Tuesday. I sit at a desk all day. the only thing if I bring the date forward I have the Melbourne Gift Fair on at end of August for 1 week, would I be okay then to be standing all day.

Libbi, you are the same as me! 170cm and 72kg (well, give or take a few hundred grams!). We are in the healthy weight range! Yip-ee. I am happy to stay where I am, and nust maintain. I know that technically I could be 55kg and still in the healthy weight range, but I am trying to be realistic, and have never been a super-skinny person, so I set my goal higher than some others. What is your goal? You sound frustrated at where you are at....?

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Sandi, congratulations on your bandiversary, and thank you so much for your kind words. I am so honoured to have inspired you in some small way.... funny, I still feel like a 'newbie', how quickly the time flies by when all is said and done. I am only a few months ahead of you... Feb was my bandiversary.

You sound like you have almost lost all your weight.. done so well, my dear!!!!

I got to my personal goal of 72kg right on the 1 year anniversary, and just before my personal "reward" of breast lift (total loss 30kg). Despite my worries about maintaining, in the 2 months since I am hovering in the "mid-high 71's", despite not participating in any exercise since the op. Very relieved. Planning to get back to Curves this week, when kids go back to school/kinder. Have been too tender previously, then too lazy, then too busy with school hol's. Hope the exercise will keep me on track, motivated, and toned.

Why are you planning your lift so far away? Have you much more to lose? I am used to my new look now, and despite the scars, very happy with the shape. Yes, I used to look great in a nice bra too, but it is great to take OFF the bra, and the boobs stay put! Ha Ha.

Great to hear your update. Take care,
Amanda x

So good to have even more feedback, Sandi, you have been so successful. With some fill taken out (temporarily, I hope) after the blockage, I am needing much more willpower and in fact have put on a kilo or two - the panic sets in!

But you are a good example of determination, and with only 3.5mls fill. Are you still losing? Reading that you've needed a complete new wardrobe makes me feel less guilty throwing out some clothes not even worn - my donation to charity this year!
Your information is so helpful and inspiring, and I'm sure others will agree.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Libbi,
thanks for the praise!
My Doctor, said I can lose as much as I intend on losing, ie, he said, keep going until u are comfortable, so thats what Im doing.
I have a 10cm band, and have 3.5 mls, none of which was put in at surgery, its all been, .5 or less at a time, my doctor is anti filling in one hit. I am definitely full up. and do not need any more filling up, or I would have no quality of life. It s perfect at 3.5.
As for clothing, I had to bin ALL my clothes, because I was living in size 18 trackies, how glam!
Now I am in mostly size tens, sometimes twelve, and in answer to ur question about types of clothing, I buy lovely fitted garments, huggable t shirts, legins, with short skirts over the top. It is a pleasure to walk in to a shop and pick something off the rack, and have to ask for a smaller size...lol.
It just gets better and better every day.
Thanks everyone, have a great night
Cheers, Sandi

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Sandi, what a wonderful report back. I remember your earlier posts when I was in the early stages of banding. I researched this site before the operation, doing lots of sums to see how much I might lose. You are right, the time goes so quickly, even though the first few weeks are so frustrating, when nothing seems to happen after the Optifast loss.

For self-funded I think you got a good deal. With private cover I was still out of pocket $5,000, but, as you say, it's worth every single penny and a thousand times more.

Isn't it interesting that we seem to be able to eat, within reason, those things that on all those other diets we'd expect to give up for life: proper cheeses, ice cream etc. Now it's easier to have self-control.

Did your doctor say you could expect to lose around 60% of what your best weight loss would be, and have you exceeded this? May I ask how much fill you have? Have you thrown out lots of clothes and bought new things (it's hard not to)? I really have to condition myself not to buy baggy things still.

Congratulations on your first bandiversary!

Libbi

Amanda, I am over joyed at reading about you boob op!
Envy leaks from all my pores...lol.
I am so pleased you had it done, and with such great success!
I will do the same, in about 12 months, when I have finished losing my weight. I have volume, but as you know, with breastfeeding 3 kids, and the weighloss, well, they aint up there. I wear good bras, so no one notices, but to finish my self confidence transformation, it is high on my agenda.
I would like to thank you Amanda, for being such a wonderful source of inspiration to me, over my 12 month journey, ever so quietly in the background, your wisdom served me well. Thankyou.
And to everyone else, thankyou for posting , keeping us all updated, we all love to hear how ppl are feeling, whether it be great or moody, we are all here for one another.
Have a wonderful day everyone....I will.
Cheers
Sandi.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hello Everyone!!!

Yes I'm still here, very much alive and well, and still click in occassionally to keep up with all your news.

Today is my "Bandiversary"!
I can't believe quite how quicky that year passed.
So for you people that may not know or remember me here's my Stats:

Sandi, Adelaide, banded by Joe D'Onofrio.
Self Funded, ouch, end cost 10,500.

Height 165cm
Weight 94 kgs
BMI 33-34
Age 45
3 natural birth children

12 months later
Weight 69 kgs

Needless to say, I am over the moon.
Such small weightloss, over a long period, ie, say half a kg a week overall, has been an ideal weightloss(for me), with absoloutely no saggy skin whatsoever.
In fact, people are saying I look better now thatn prior to having kids!
The cost was irrelevant to me, as I woould have spent 50k, if it meant achieving long lasting weightloss.
Today my regime, is basically the same on a daily basis,no matter the season.
Early AM, a small pot of tea.
Mid morn, couple of crackers or well cooked toast, with some yummy cheese, say creamy blue, or romano, or other.
Lunch, Hearty serve of soup, with lots of well cooked veg, noodle, and meat or chicken, all inside it. But Laksa is my fave, at least 4 times a week..lol.
Afternoon tea , ususlly those tiny bags of crisps, or crackers, with cheese
Tea time, whatever i have made the kids, just tiny serve. I can eat anything at all, but on a miniscule scale, and chew chew chew. It could be snitzel, (1/2 palm size,) 3 or 4 chips(oven fries), and whatever veg, but cooked, not raw, like my kids like!
Supper time, is always an iceblock or icecream, like a paddle pop, choc wedge, etc.. I really fit in with my family, so my life didnt have to chage, except for the healing, and mushy stage.

So there you have it guys, My goal is to lose another 10-11 kgs, which I am happy to acheive over another 12 month period.
I am the happiest I have been for a very long time, doing so much more with my kids, with confidence.!

Hi d. As Amanda says, it is just wonderful to read that it is really possible to maintain for two years! Putting it all on again is our greatest fear, as that's what has always happened with the standard diets. And losing 30 kgs preband is amazing.

I know what you mean about the weight suddenly going up - I was 70.5 last week. Today it's 72 (less restriction after last week's blockage....). May we ask how much restriction you have and whether you still have it adjusted? We seem to be fairly typical: it took me a year to lose 20 plus kgs, up to 25 kgs after 16 months.

d, it is so encouraging to hear of your maintainance. well done! i hope i can do as well as you... mintainance is my biggest fear. it sounds like you're quite restricted though, (which i'm not), so i think i will definately be pushing (again!!!) for more fill next visit. no luck last time, so maybe next.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hey Libbi,
3 years banded here, took 12 months to get to goal and have easily maintained it for 2 years.... in July!
My banding was very no eventful! It was easy peasy thank goodness. I had lost around 30 kilos over a few years prior to the banding, and used the band to get 20 kilos off.
I was about 90 kilos and 165cm when banded, BMI of 31 I think.... now I am 70 kilos so its all good.

70 kilos is my goal weight although as the doctor said it still isn't the ideal BMI for me but I would look like a hag any thinner.

I am actually 68.9 kilos, but I don't like to write it.... as I will probably spring back up to 70 as its my nice safe steady number!

Bread causes a blockage for me. I have never tried scones.... out of fear lol!
I couldn't proably have hafl a piece of toast, if it was the crust, very charred and left to go cold and hard........ so thats why I don't eat it..... where's the appeal in eating that, it sounds awful! lol
Cruskits are wonderful, without them I wouldn't eat!! I love them, even have them for breakfast everyday.
I eat a lot of potato now and not much red meat at all..... which I never thought I would be able to cut back on as I ate red meat nearly every meal.
take care
d

Welcome, d. What stage of banding are you at? I have lost all interest in bread, at last; I'm sure this must help our weight loss. I manage some crumpet toast over about an hour for breakfast (mainly old habits) and then maybe have a couple of cruskits during the day. Does the bread block with you or have you just lost the taste for it? If I'm offered a sandwich or wrap I just eat the filling without even having to tell myself to do that. What a miracle.
