Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
hi 'terratime',
glad to be of help.. not long yet to your surgery. very exciting. i am at the top end of my healthy weight range (BMI just under/just on 25, depending on the time of the month!). I am happy to hover here, at about 71/72kgs (my height is 170cm), and at my age and with 2 kids, feel that it is pretty realistic. On my wedding day I was probably about 4kg lighter, so perhaps that will be a goal for me to get to one day, but realistically I don't think I would maintain much less than this. I was originally more than 102kg, with a BMI of about 36, so I definately am happy to be medically in the healthy range. Before I felt so slow and cumbersome and as if every movement was an effort. Not I have a spring in my step, and feel that if one of the kids run off, I could actually run after them! Ha Ha. Keep us informed of your progress.... If you don't mind sharing, what are your stats, and what city are you in? I'm from Melbourne.
Cheers,
Amanda

Hi frostee

It was great to read your story. You sound like the perfect success story. I too need to loose 30kg's, which will put me in the healty weight range. Was wondering how people with less to loose actually go. Whether they tend to loose less but your story sounds great. I am booked for the end of July. Feelings are so so mixed. Excited but still so so scared. Are you now at the low or high end of your healthy weight range.

Thanks

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
P.S. Yes, it is painful straight after surgery, and I felt sore for about 3 weeks. However, once you have healed you can't feel the band at all. It is not uncomfortable and does not hurt. You only know it's there when you eat too miuch, and then it does hurt! The trick is to stop eating when you start feeling full.. not when you are stuffed! My only reminder physically is the port, which I can feel (and see!) under my skin. Kinda gross, but it sticks out more on me than others I think. It is worth it, but I do wish it didn't pop out so much. Don't be put off....

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Jackie,
It is a common story, to lose weight and then put more back on over time. Very depressing. Most of us have been there. From my own personal perspective, I have never regretted getting the band one single minute I have had it (16 months now). I had 30 kg to lose to get to the healthy weight range, and achieved that goal in 12 months. I have maintained it so far, even being quite slack about my diet. The band has been a total life-changing experience for me. I am now so much more confident, feel more professional at work, feel younger, and like I have a long life ahead, looking like a normal, attractive person (not just a fat mumma!). My fear is of the band ever having to be removed, as I never, ever, ever want this to happen. I just would hate to go back to my old struggles with food, and constant roller coaster of trying to resist the cravings and then failing and the weight going up and down and up and up....
I can eat all foods. I can go out and noone knows. I did go through a phase of vommiting a few times a week, however over the past month have concentrated more whilst eating and it has hardly happened. You have to eat slower and chew more and really stop before you are too full, thats all. It is the best.. I LOVE MY BAND!
Hope this helps. Good luck,
Amanda

Just wondering how people with a lower BMI that had the surgery have gone. Have they still lost large amounts of weight. Have you been able to get to the lower end of a healthy BMI.

From a person who has had the surgery, here is my advise. You will not regret it. Do atend one or two information nights held in different hospitals to help you understand the surgery, the risks, recovery, etc. as well as observe the doctor to see if you like his manner.

Good luck.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
hi, i hope you don't mind me asking a few questions but i would appreciate some advice. i am close to 40kg overweight and have done every diet going and put more weight on each time. i am thinking of having the surgery but i have some concerns about how it actually feels? how uncomfortable the band is? and the vomitting how often is normal? does it hurt? i have read some blogs and i am confused about what i would be able to eat after the operation?
again i hope you don't mind me asking i don't know anyone that has had the operation

thanks

Hi Libbi, no, you did not committ some cyper crime. That dude with the crazy claim of losing something like 30kg in 30 days put me off for a while!

Bec, I sympathise with your frustration of the band getting tighter but weight loss stopping. It sounds like your quality of life is worse, for no gain. Most of us feel that the extra tighntening (and restriction in what we can eat) is worth it, because at least we are losing. So I guess you would have to take on board your surgeon's advice re: whether loosening the band might actually help.
I know my surgeon would definately advocate that, because he tells me often that he wants the band looser so that NO food is unable to be tolerated (yes, like steak, all meats etc, which I can eat by the way with no probs usually). The threory being that he wants us (me) to eat a proper, solid meal like steak & veggies and then feel FULL for quite a while, so I'm not searching for more and more "easy" food to eat. The tighter the band, the less foods tolerated, and the greater the tendency to snack often on food that is easily tolerated, and often digets quickly through the band. Ahhhhh! I am one to talk, hey! As I am actively trying to AVOID my band being loosened. However, I feel that my situation is a bit diferent, as I have always tolerated all foods, including all bread & meat, and am able to eat pretty substantial meals. I really do think my PB issue stems more from eating too quick (ie, not chewing enough), or over eating because I'm basically food addicted, and I'll go for that one extra bite of something really yummy. So I think that loosening the band in my case would definately result in increased weight, as I'll only be able to eat MORE of the foods I'm already eating.
However, If my surgeon is adament I should take some fill out, I probably will give it a go, as I'd never forgive myself if I didn't (against his advice) and then DID have a slippage. And the beauty of it is that it's reversable!!!
Cheers, Amanda

73 kilos is great. Well done. Isn't it hard when you have to constantly remind yourself to slow down your eating and drinking!

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Amanda and all

There is life out there after all! My recent posts have met with a total silence: I was beginning to think I'd committed some dreadful breach of cyberspace etiquette, and everyone had gone somewhere else to play!

Re 'throw up' survey: after my blockage and fill removed, and then topped up a little less than before (now 7.6), I now block only about once a week, if that. And I know exactly when! It's when I'm out socialising and talking and not concentrating on eating slowly and chewing. And it even happens from drinking soup too quickly. And it is so easy not to concentrate on food when you're talking, especially if it's a small group and you're keeping the conversation going. For safety's sake I usually have soup, but I must tell myself 'don't, don't have bread, it'll lump up and block' (even if I can manage it at home). Because of these 'girls' lunch' disasters more people know my little secret, but no matter.

I'm really glad that it does happen as it reminds me that there is a band in there and it's working. I haven't lost more weight, doctor says I'm at the limit at around 73 kgs, but I'm grateful if I don't put on.

Libbi

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Bec,
The situations you mention that caused you to PB, sound perfectly normal to me. Drinking water fast will come sraight back up, meat that is tough is never going to work......manderines, oranges and even tomato skins I have heard effect most banded folk.
I cannot eat bread at all and meat has to be cooked by me a certain way or I can't eat it.
What is your restriction and you usual diet like? If your restriciton is so tight that you can't eat leafy salads etc then maybe loosening your band may work. If the band is tooo tight people tend to cunsume more calories as you have more dairy and creamy soups etc, that slide down easily, when the band is loosened and they can enjoy vegies and salad and some meats, weigth starts to move again. It's the same old story I think, you need to make sure your input is less than your output, calorie wise that is.
I've been at goal weight for over 2 years and I of course I have slackened off my diet and exercise. If I want to lose weight again I need to exercise more and stop eating bad things, like the really creamy pumpkin soup I made last night:)
Good luck with the doctor. Maybe keep a food diary and take that in with you and the doctor may be able to work out if loosening the band will benefit you.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
It is now nearly 11 month since my lap band surgery (July 2, 2008). I lost 8 Kgs on Optifast diet in the 2 weeks before surgery. After the surgery, I lost another 7 kgs in the first 4 months. But after that initial weight loss there has been absolutely NO weight loss AT ALL to now.

And in the first 6 months I hardly ever vomited.

The surgeon called my weight loss a success even at this stage. But to me I had not reached my goal weigh, and so needed more help.

The surgeon has been progressively putting in a tiny bit more fill in every 2 months since February. Unfortunately for me, there still is NO weight loss. But my vomiting frequency has increased.

Since February, for me the worst period is the first 2 to 3 weeks straight after the fill when I vomit at least once every day. And then things settle down to maybe once every week.

For me the situations usually were :
- first thing in the morning when I can feel a tightness even when I drink water too fast when swallowing my vitamin tablet
- eating a mandarin
- eating meat that was in a “dry†state (ie not stewed or curried)
- generally eating too fast

In my own mind I have redefined success. Success to me now means that I have not put back on the 15 Kgs ( 8 Kgs before surgery plus 7 Kgs after surgery). My BMI is now 29 which means I am still in overweight range.

I do have my next appointment with the surgeon next week. And I wonder what he is going to do – take some fill out as the extra he has progressively put in, does not seem to have any effect in reducing my weight, but is making me vomit more. Or put some more fill in and help me try to lose a little more weight.

Will keep you posted.

Thank you Claudia & Sandi for your feedback..

Claudia.. what are your secrets, and how is the weight loss going?
Sandi.. yes, I was totally freaking out at the possibility of the band being loosened, but of course, the possibility of it coming OUT because of complications is so much worse. So yes, I am trying to change my ways. Thank you for your honesty.

Anyone else willing to share?

Cheers,
Amanda

Hi Amanda.
I would die if my surgeon told me he was going to take some fill out....and yes I bring up on a daily basis. But it is all purely self inflicted....eating too fast, drinking at the wrong time, or drinking too fast, over eating.etc etc, and I know I have some work still ahead of me, im my behaviour, and I know that if my doc said, either change your habits, or fill comes out, then I would definitely make concerted efforts to do so.
There you go, I have spoken the utmost truth.
xxxxxx
Sandi.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hello everyone... Long time no write. Thought I'd send out a survey question, which has sprung from a recent visit to my surgeon. I was wondering if you could tell me how often, on average, you... ah-hem.. (sorry), well basically, regurgitate. Also referred to as P.B., vommit, whatever you call it, food coming back up.

This personal question arises from a regular survey my surgeon gets us to fill out each visit, on which I last time ticked "2-3 times per week". On this basis, he was most keep to REMOVE some fill, as he felt that it was abnormal, a sign the band was too tight, and a slippery slope to band slippage. Previosly I'd ticked "once every 1-2 weeks". His stats from patients filling in this survey say that 2-3 x a week was reported by only 10% of his patents. Apparently most of his patents report "never or rarely", and that is what he wants me to be like. He did also say that he felt that me putting BACK ON 3-5kg's would be easier to maintain long term (mind you, I am just within the healthy weight range - the TOP END), so I am freaking out a tad.

Anyway, I have been to visit the dietition, for the first time since pre-surgery 15 months ago, and she agreed with my surmation that my vommiting was probably "behavioural" rather than the band too tight. I am therefore completing a food diary, concentrating on eating slower, chewing more, listening to "full" signals, not drinking with meals etc.. basically being more concious of the band. And since the surgeon's appointment I went a whole 10 days with no problems with food, eating everything and no vommiting at all. Then yesterday I vommitted twice. Once I know was because I drank too soon after eating. The other was a total surprise, as I thought I was being careful. So that freaked me a little, and got me thinking... can the band slip up and down? Has it already slipped? All those paranoid thangs.

So all you banded ones.. please help. He will review in one month.
Thanks, Amanda

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Folks,

On a recent Today Tonight program, they showed a Band Camp - a program run by a personal trainer who himself has had the lap band surgery. It is essentially a weekend away to re-enforce and re-educate people on how best to use the band as a tool. The only pre-requisite is that people attending must have had the surgery.

Has anyone out there been on such a camp and is it a worthwhile exercise ?

Any feedback will be great.

Regards.

That doesn't sound like a very healthy weight loss programme, with such massive, sudden losses which must include muscle and fluid loss. We've all been on restricted diet programmes and a fair number of us have been eating healthily all our lives, but it all goes back on! That's why we're here, the gastric band suppresses the appetite, hopefully forever.

Hi There,

I am new to this forum and just wanted to add/say that I couldn't agree with this last post more....

If you are looking for additional help pre or post op, or are willing to consider all weight loss options I would recomend you have a read of the following blog. It is a diary entry of a client on his weight loss journey/program. He has lost 35kgs in the last 7 weeks by eating a well balanced diet and exercising regularly.Enjoy the read

Hi band_oz_redo,
I was banded in July 2006 and you and I pretty much had identical stats!!
165cm
90kg before banding here

and now
still the same height hehehehe
and I am 69kgs.
I lost my weight within 12 months and have threfore beena t goal for nearly 2 years.
My whole banding experience has been a dream..... but then I read your post and go GULPP!!!!
I do hope that the new band works a treat and you get back to the weight you know and love!
Now tell me, the band will do its job, but what about you? Have you got someone to talk to about your sabotage? IS the doctor aware of your eating habits? Have you got a dietician working with you?? If your head isn't in the right place your band may not be the answer????
I am not trying to be negative here but you really need to fix your head and your heart first! They both need to be in it for your band to work long term!!
Keep us updated.
