Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi All
I there are heap of spelling mistakes please forgive me as I am on the train posting this note.
Congrats Veromica on getting your sugery date. Andr I dont know of anyone in Sydney, sorry.
Like Jo there are only a few select people that know I have had the lap band, so I find this place one I can pour my heart out and more importantly use as my motivation. Need to lose 10kg by August so working toward that. Am trying to walk at least fo 20 mins each day even if its from one building to another or at lunchtime.
well nearly arrived at my station.
Talk soon.... keep that weight coming off,
Lisa xx

Hi all,
and welcome to andr...and veronica, andr a lady that comes on this board named Gabs.....( she is lovely) will be able to help you with a surgeon as she is in Canberra and had her surgery done in Sydney so don't worry there will be a surgeon there to help you.......both keep in touch as I find everyones story helps and interest me, its good to know that we have others to help, because I have not told anyone about my band only my daughter and husband and they have been great, but is good to talk to others when you are just not sure about some things, I for one would be a bit lost without this board.......all the best for your future journeys.......looking forward to hearing how both of go........... all the best Jo

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi all

If I was doubting the band my body keeps reminding me why I am doing it. I have rheumatoid arthritis and am in a lot of pain right now and can't sleep. The lap band will not stop the arthritis but it's in my knee at the moment (it moves around) and less weight on that knee would be a wonderful thing!! My back has also been playing up lately, all reasons I am having this op.

Andr, can't help you with surgeons in Sydney sorry but I think there might be a 'Sydney surgeons' thread. I think that Gabs who comes on this thread was banded in Sydney, I am sure she will answer you soon. I have no idea about the coeliac's and the band, but maybe if you post that question on 'General Chat 2' you might find your answer as there are more people reading that thread.

Hope you are all keeping well.
Cheers
Mandy

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi there,
This is my first post to this board so hope it comes through OK. I have been reading the messages and finding out all I can about the pros and cons of low BMI banding.

I am 40 yrs old and live in Canberra and am wanting to have a lap band op. I have been struggling with weight problems since 8 yrs old. I have a BMI of approx 37 weighing in at 95 kgs and 160 cm tall. My mother had a lap band done about two years ago and has had good success with it but has lapses now and again. My mum was banded in Adelaide.

I would like to know if anyone can recommend a good surgeon in Sydney. We have a new bariatric clinic here in Canberra but do not know of anyone going there for a lap band. I rang them last week and got an answering machine so will try again tomorrow.

The reasons I am wanting a lap band other than the usual weight struggles are my mother thinks it will be benefit me, I snore at night due to my heavier weight (terrible, I know) but probably most importantly I have two insulin dependent diabetic children (no family history)other than them and am worried I will become a diabetic shortly too. I also suffer slightly elevated blood pressure and have had my thyroid removed. Since removal of my thyroid I have gradually been finding it harder to matabolise food. Lastly, I also have coeliac disease which affects the upper gastrointestinal tract - because of this I am worried I will be found unsuitable for surgery. Does anyone know of others with coeliac disease that have a lap band? I am trying to get in to see a surgeon as soon as possible to find out if at least I am suitable for the op -if not, I suppose I will be faced with the rest of my life as a yo yo dieter continually increasing in size. That is such a depressing thought - I really hope I will be found suitable. I don't think going without certain foods after surgery will be such an issue for me as I already go without so much due to my coeliac diet. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Andr ...

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Chez,

Im just about the same in the weight department as you :) I had my first consult with my surgeon last Friday and tomorrow I ring and book for my surgery. I'm quite excited as I have been told that I will most definitely be able to get it done before Easter - whooo hooo!

My heaviest weight was *groans* 120kg and am now down to 103 with a BMI of 35.6 (is it ok for me to chat on this thread?) Basically lost the weight following a no carb diet. I cant begin to tell you the amount of money I have spent on dieting over the last 10 years. My hubby and I actually sat down recently to try and work it out, but once I got over $10,000 I didnt want to list anymore!!!

In the past six months I have been diagnosed as having Diabetes type II and Insulin Resistant as well as PCOS, and it was such a wake up call for me. When I looked at pictures of myself, I could always kid myself by thinking "I really am so much more attractive in person"

All sirens and alarms have been screaming at me non stop, and I decided that I have to take positive action. I have been big for most of my life with my lowest weight being around 65kgs (at around 19!) and am now aiming for 65 - 70kg as my goal weight.

My height is 171cm so I think this is a good goal. How do they figure out your ideal weight anyhow? I've always seen myself as a large frame, but maybe its been the fat hiding the frame?!?!

xx Veronica

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Well done Chez, you will very soon be under the 100kg mark for sure. I think that when we get worked up about something we get stressed and then turn back to our comfort in food. Whenever I wanted to start a diet for something important I would end up eating worse than I would when I wasn't dieting, definately a head thing. Try and relax and forget about breaking the 100 and I am sure it will just happen.
Good luck
Mandy

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
hi jo I know somimes insuline dependent diabetics will have a short stay in hspital when staring on optifast diet for pre surgeries (like for new knees or hips and they have to loose weight before the surgon will operate)so
they can have their insulin monitored as the diet change can muck it all around ,old insulin doseages can then be too much ,they usually out after the weeks up. well take cear of yourself Cheers Chez

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hey Lisa,

Welcome back and thanks for your kind words. Semm to have no trouble telling others what to do and how to be motivated. It's just motivating myself that I have trouble with!

The fill is really nothing, less painful and traumatic than having blood taken and I am a wimp.

Ask your doc if once you have lost the weight you can have the port repositioned. Or sooner if it bothers you. mine is hidden in my abdomen and everytime I go for a fill my doc says words to the effect that, oh tht's right your port is in different place!

Mine is in a direct line under my left n i p p l e about 2cm above my belly button.

You can easily lose 10kgs by July. I'm trying for 18 by then.

We will do it together.

Gabs

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hey Jo,

do you have type 1 diabetes or type 2.

I grew up with a girl who had type 1 and it took her a lot of adjusting to come to terms with it.

She went into Comas a number of times because she did not want to give herself injections.

It is a really hard row to hoe.

I can imagine how the optifast would not have been good for you.

You think we are tough? You are tougher than the lot of us dealing with Diabetes.

Chew and eat slowly and most foods should go down but it is a learning proces I think. I have had a few "first bite syndrome" experiences where my first bite causes real pain and seems to get stuck but then abotu 5 minutes laster I can eat again. Weird!

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi all

Glad to see you back Lisa, I was thinking about you the other day and wondering how it was all going. Lots of people put on weight as soon as the liquid part is over so I would be pretty proud of yourself for staying the same. Good luck with the fill.

Hi Janice, you are so English "flipping eck", lol. I am doing alright so far but am tired now, I was good most of the day though which is amazing on such a small amount of energy going in. Never been much of an apple eater but there wasn't much left of my one piece of fruit for the day! You did good with the cut and paste thing, the only observation I have is that it is showing our goal weights, not weight lost, unless you only want to weigh 8kg, lol.

Hows the motivation going Gabs, think Italy, think Gigalo's, think fashion, just don't think pizza's.

Take care everybody

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi All

Sorry i havnt been posting lately but started a job in a new dept so it has been busy, busy, busy.
I have been catching up up on all the posts since last time, I logged in and two things stood out, went and just got myself a glass of wine (from all the wine references) and last night threw up for the first time since the op (dont know if it was the noodle dish or the wine I drank last night). It was good to hear (in a sort of yukky way) that you dont throw up your food as I was worried that nothing was coming out.I still have not gained the 6kg I lost from when I completed the Optifast, which is great. Friday is my first fill very scared but excited.
My goal weight is 63kg. The place where my port is still sticks out (my husband says its not too bad but I am a little vain).
Glad to hear about you all, I see Gabs you are still inspiring everyone you should seriously consider (if your not already) being a motivational speaker. Mandy good luck with the Optifast, as i have been busy I now eat it for lunch (the bars and shakes). To all the rest of you Hi, you do inspire me and help put everything into perpective. I have finalised my dates for Thailand this year so I need to have lost at least 10kg by July 27th!!When I read all your posts I know I can do it.
I will try to post more often

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Jo

I feel like a bit of hero actually to have survived the first two days but after that it gets a lot easier, you are not so hungry. I have had an optifast bar, an apple and a green salad today and I feel fine. Only on day three though, probably be really bored more than hungry in a week. I keep telling myself it is the last 'diet' I will ever go on.

I am not sure how it would be for a diabetic though, I should imagine that is why you didn't have to do it. It's a good introduction to the restrictions we will have after the banding though.

Looking forward to getting on the scales.

Take care
Mandy

Hi everyone,
I would just like to to say to all the girls on optifast or optislim how great you are,as I did not have to go on that stuff, I don't know if I could have done it because I tried it a while ago and I only lasted 2 days I was never so hungry in my life and I think I put back and more weight that I lost in those two days when I started to eat I just didn't stop for about 8 hours, I am a diabetic and have been most of my life so I was having hypo's left, right and centre from lack of food, so I think thats why I didn't have to have it before my op, I'm not sure, the nurse asked if I had to go on the optifast and he just said no.......I never questioned why, I was just so pleased and when I read how some of you are on it for a couple of weeks I think to myself these girls are tough so good luck to all of you.......you all deserve to do well.

No Gabs the curry chicken did not go down well......I dont think I can have rice just yet.......I can eat but I have had a couple to things get stuck....luckily only for a little while, but I am very cautious now, but everyday I lose a bit more weight so I will but up with this....hope everyone is well.....Love Jo
