Congratulations, Jess, on your operation!
How are you going with the liquids? Luckily winter is a good time for all those soupy things. I got good mileage out of the off-the-shelf curry and casserole mixes added to veges and seafood or chicken, and blended with the 'stab' blender. And the fruit smoothies with mango and berries (both can be frozen) and banana, plus yoghurt, are really delicious.
Keep us posted.

| im 25, 168cm and have a BMI of about 30.47 ...i would like to have the banding done but i dont think i qualify? i dont have the motivation to stick to any diet, even though i may lose a little, nothing really to keep me motivated. I've put on about 20 kilos since 2002 and now i think it would be better to get it done to put the diabeties and heart risks of my family before they hit... |

Hey Frostee2
No, i was one of the lucky ones i didn't have to do opti. But i do have some celebrity slims left in my cupboard from previous crash diets and might give them ago anyway, so i feel nice and healthy for the surgery.
Terratime29
I am having my surgery done at St Johns, Subiaco (Western Australia). As i mentioned above i didn't have to do opti thank goodness. Although i am trying to eat healthier options so i don't put weight on prior to the surgery. Hopefully we will skinny twins. :)

Hi Jess
Thats funny that we have almost identical stats. We will have to keep each other updated so we can see how we each go. You are a month a head of me so you will be leading the way. Good luck. Where are you having your surgery done? Hopefully we end up with the same perfect stats at the end. You should be having your first fill as I have my surgery. Have you started the optifast stage and if so hows it going?
Libbi thanks again, I will make sure I get lots of cruchy vegies into me for the last time. Gee I have a lot that I am going to miss, but I'm sure what I gain will make up for it. |

Thank you, Jess and Terratime. As for Optifast, I lost only 2.5kgs over ten days, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected, foodwise. Instead of the Optifast soups I had Celebrity Slim vege soups with extra veges and curry flavouring (they are easier to mix than Optifast). I refused to have any milk powder drinks but very happily lived on the delicious Optifast cappucino and berry bars, plus stirfried veges with oyster sauce (make the most of them - you may never be able to eat crisp veges again!).
Good luck to you both and keep us posted.

Amanda and Libbi
Cant thank you both enough. Sometimes you need to hear what you already believe, but you both have made me realise it can be real. Thank you. I have been to see the surgeon and the dietian today so just have my one appt to go then it the big day. This time in 5 weeks I will be done. Start Opti in 3 week so already on my way. Feel like Opti may be harder than after banding.....but maybe not.... Well anyway may catch you soon out shopping in that smaller section but honestly thank you and I will keep you posted on how it is all going. 35 days to go but who is counting!!! |

Yes, Amanda, the addiction to food has transferred to an addiction to clothes indeed! I am so besotted with the fact that some things actually fit (that aren't in fat lady beige) that I can't stop buying them. Before, I gave up shopping when the labels started to say size 20. Now I'm a 14 in pants (which still sounds fat, I know). As for tops, it depends on the brands, still Large in some, 14 in others. But to be able to wear one layer without another to cover the bulges is so good.

Hello Terratime
You'll see my stats in the post to Jackie. I'm similar to Amanda (not quite as spectacular though), and the same height at 170cm. My doctor too said I could expect to lose 50-60% of excess weight and 'was it really worth it' - was it ever! I've lost 82% of excess weight, so even with us low bmi-ers it does happen! And it hasn't been hard, and I eat now the things I wouldn't dare to eat before because of panic bingeing. The band makes it so easy to stop.
Don't be scared - it's a wonderful, life-changing journey.

| p.s. I did Optifast for 13 days and lost 5.5kg. It was a miracle!!! I did it quite strictly, however did eat lots and lots of the allowable veggies (more then 2 cups a day), often made into a big put of veggie soup that I would eat whenever I felt hungry. |

| terratime, it is my pleasure! That's ahat there boards are for. I was so glad to find them when I was just researching the surgery, and am still addicted! I started out a size 18, and am now about a 12. I still wear size 14 pants (sometimes need to get them taken in at the waist) as I am a pear shape. I am addicted to the Trinny & Suzanna "What Not To Wear" series, and it has really helped dressing for my shape, so I think that it is not so much about the size you wear, but the shape of the clothes. I could wear a size 10 if it was an A-line dress, but never call myself a 10. Then again, even when I was "skinny" (that's what other people thought), I would always wear a size 14 pants, people couldn't believe it, but its just my shape. I think that height plays a part too, I'm 170cm (5 foot 7), and I don't think that you can compare sizes with women of different heights. That's why BMI is a good leveller: it takes into accound height and weight, so if you say you've got a certain BMI it can be easier to imagine how overweight/healthy weight you are. Anyway... there has been one downside of having this surgery for me. And that is......... THE AMOUNT OF MONEY I NOW SPEND ON CLOTHES!!! Ha ha. For quite a while I had no interest, as I looked bad in everything. Now I spend too much, as it is exciting going into "normal" (not plus size) shops and having lots of choices, and actually looking good in them. If only I could go out more, but with young kids, it's not an option. Still, I dress up at work, and going out is now a pleasure, not something to feel embarassed about as I used to feel because I looked so fat and and I particularly hated seeing people who knew me before I put on the weight. Not I love seeing people who haven't seen me for a while because I feel so proud of the difference. An occupational hazard is getting a big head becuase of all the compliments, You will see. Just wait till Christmas... it will already be a new you. And in 12 months.... :)!! Amanda x |

Thank you. I so needed to talk to you. I too told my surgeon that 50-60% of excess weight was not my goal. But as I said I would still be happy with any weight loss. Well this time in 5 weeks I will be getting ready for hospital. Cant believe I am actually doing it, although the second after I went to the info evening i knew that I would. How long did you do the opti stage, even though this sounds yuk looking forward to just starting everything. Can I ask you what your clothes size was and what it is now. |
