Yes, I remember now, Tanya. Did your doctor suggest a food/drink programme for your intolerances? Do make sure you don't dehydrate.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Tanya, is it still the gas pain? I've been going through the pre-op. manual and it recommends liquid panadol (but nothing fizzy, let it go flat). The gas is used to pump up the cavity for easier access, it will disappear soon. The manual also says walking helps. Are you sipping fluid constantly? And don't forget to drink sustagen (I had the hospital or sports chocolate as a hot drink).

Did you get some information as to what you might expect? Don't hesitate to ring your doctor's office about feeling sick.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
I'm uncontrollable with the posts today!
Thinlizzy mentioned people being judgemental - there's an article in Saturday's Sydney morning Herald Spectrum about obesity and gastric banding, and it's very judgemental.

The writer says fat people just lack willpower and self- discipline. How many weight loss programmes have we all been on, and how many times have we heard that criticism?!

I do believe the theory discussed in my pre-op handout that there may be something wrong with the physiology of our hunger mech*nism, and that the suppression of appetite through gastric banding can help us. And it does!

Hello Thinlizzie and Slazdins

Congratulations on the big decisions! And, Thinlizzie, I think you're sensible keeping it to yourself for a while. I certainly did, but after a few months told a couple of dear friends (mainly because they caught me when I had a blockage). And I was nervous it mightn't work, like all the other weight loss programmes I've been on, so I didn't want constant questioning, however well-meaning, about my progress. At my age of 65, once the weight loss starts to show people don't ask questions because they think I might have some dreadful illness!

Good luck on your exciting journey.

Libbi

PS If people do ask and I don't want to go into the detail, I just tell them the truth - I've been eating less, especially at night, which I think really makes a difference.

Wonderful, Tanya! It's not too bad at all, is it? And now you're set for pumpkin soup, and well blended cauliflower soup with blue cheese, and lovely fruit smoothies. Mmmm.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi everyone, I have been reading this message board for a few weeks now and am comforted by you all and love to read about your thoughts, feelings and experiences. I am a low BMI'er at 31.5 and am booked in for surgery on 6 August at The Avenue in Melbourne. It has been a difficult decision to make, but I am now sure it is the right one for sustainable weight loss. I have not told anyone except my fantastic husband, as people are quick to judge and comment on why I am choosing this path. So I have decided to keep Mum about it, but i think it is important to have support and share stories to get through this and keep focussed on outcomes. Anyway, I can blabber on....

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Terratime and Libbi,

I think I'm doing the express lapband course at the moment with my doc. It's day 8 post-op and he said he was happy with my progress and put me on to mushies today. It's hard to believe it's only 2.5 weeks since my first appointment and decision to do this. I probably would have been more concerned and worried more if I'd had more time to ponder it all, so on reflection I'm glad I have been able to get on with it.

My doc said today I can also resume Pilates and go back to the gym, as long as I skip the weights. I was surprised at that but I do feel lethargic for not exercising of late.

In answer to your question, Terra, I think my BMI was 35. Isn't it terrible? I don't remember. My surgeon worked it out on my first appointment but I've always thought in terms of kilos, not BMI. I'm not one to weigh myself frequently like others here do. That has always been a cause of despair and unrealistic expectations in the past for me so I try not to obsess about the numbers. I don't have a goal weight but I'm sure I'll know it when I get there. I believe I need to lose somewhere between 20-30kgs but when I get closer to the mark, I'll sort out those details!

I hope everyone else is going well with either their preparation, recovery or weight loss modes!

Cheers,
Cass

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Wow, Cassowary, what a fast track to the operation!! No time to think or worry or change your mind. Lucky you! Funny about the Optifast bars, and when I think back I may have had only one a day, for breakfast, then Celeb. Slim soup plus veges for lunch, then stir fry veges with oyster sauce for dinner. My loss over ten days was a minute 2.5 kgs, but the before and after scales might have varied (here we go, clutching at straws...), and I've never eaten much fat at any stage. As for checking with the doctor - I'd lie low on that one, a life on milkshakes is not worth living.
Your weight loss in less than three weeks is amazing and will so encourage all those about-to-be bandits.
Do keep us posted re your progress.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Jess..Glad to hear that you felt that it was not as bad as expected, thats helps with my panic stages. Just need to get it over with and be on the otherside. At least the though of liquids on the other side can have different flavours.

Cass & Libbi..I am able to have the bars but have not tried them, I will go out and get some today. Just thought that they would be a bad as the shakes. I am however getting a little more use to the shakes, not liking them but not gagging anymore. Oh well only 9 more sleeps. When I say that it makes me scared.

Wow Cass cant believe you were operated on so quickly. I went to my first info session late April and made appt next day however its taken this long to see everyone. At least you had less time to freak out. What BMI are you aiming for? 6 Kg already lost is great but how much are you hoping to loose.

Thank you everyone for your help..stops me going crazy.

Hi Rayls,

No matter now. I've past the Optifast stage. Couldn't have the bars if I wanted right now as I'm one week post-op in the liquids stage. But please munch one of those yummy capuccino bars for me!

Cheers,
Cass

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Terratime,

I was banded a week ago (BMI 35). At least after the op, you can have any liquids of your choice, which is a nice change on Optigloop. I have had those berry and cappuccino bars in the past and agree they are delicious but I rang and checked with my surgeon during the Optifast stage pre-op and he insisted I could only have the Optifast shakes and not the bars. Might be worth checking, anyhow, if you haven't already.

Different docs seem to have vastly different rules. I was only on Optifast 11 days before my surgery (that was my first appointment with my surgeon and he booked me in for the op 11 days later). I did manage to lose 4kgs in that time and have lost another 2kgs since the surgery.

Cheers,
Cass

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Terratime,
It was hard staying off the scales when i was home for the first 2 weeks. But i have been at my dads for the past 5 days and he doesn't own a set of scales that works.

I am so glad i didn't have to go on opti but i have done shake diets for months in the past and i just don't think i could stomach them anymore. I feel for you.

I freaked out a little bit but once its done you wonder what you were worried about. Sometimes i even worry now about damaging the band or being naughty etc etc. But i think just be good (with a treat sometimes) and follow the surgeons orders and you will be fine.

Wjana, how are you going, you must be almost back to normal (carefully). How did you go with the liquids? I'm sure those about to undergo surgery will be interested in your experience.

And Bruce, how are you -males always seem to lose weight more quickly....

Terratime, are you eating the Optifast bars, cappucino and berry are so delicious, although a bit of a shock for those of us used to vegemite for breakfast. I refused to have the shakes, but stuck to things you can get your teeth into, like vege stir fries, but to eat two choolate bars a day was heaven for me! And put lots of veges in the soups.
Good luck with the op. You'll be so thrilled.

Glad to hear all is good....11 more sleeps till its my turn. Cant wait, Im doing Opti at the moment and actually hating it. Cant believe you have kept off the scales, I could never be that strong, I hop on the scales every single morning which is probably a habit I should break.
Was having lots of freak out days lately but now just ready to have it done. Just want to get it over with.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Terratime,

Its all good at the moment. I finally started mushies which is a very welcome change. I have had mashed potato, porridge, cauliflower cheese (mashed) and mashed potato salad. Yummy. I have also started walking a bit.
I think i have lost about 5kgs but i am not weighing myself till i have my first fill. Which is on the 28th of July. Doctor says i am healing well which is good.
You must be getting pretty excited only couple weeks to go.
