Hi Kylie,

Are you booked in to see a lapband surgeon. If you arent can I suggest you book into see Dr Anderson. He has his own GP working for him, who will do the initial referal.
This will eliminate you having to go to your own GP and getting a lecture of dieting..... etc etc.....

I have a low BMI, (32), I weight 90 kgs and am 167 cm. I was given an op date yesterday of July 23rd.. Im very excited.. and a bit nervous

Hi everyone

Thank charmsy good to know. I am feeling better today except my back hurts from not walking and sitting straight, Im concentrating on that at the moment.

I am a teacher so I will go back to work on Monday and take it slowly.

Leanne we arent focused on our weight, but in my book it tells me that I have to focus on the positives and a positive would certainly be weight loss. It is surreal to have had a weighty problem and not be able to loose weight then have an operation which can in essence change our lives. Even my rings being loose on my finger and not waking up feeling bloated is a bonus. We all have different ways in which we deal with this transition. One thing may work for someone and not for others. Mainly being positive and watching positive changes is on way in which we can cope with understanding what is happening.

You ladies are and inspiration and a source of great comfort. I look forward to writing my feelings even if they arent read, it helps.

Keep in touch Charmsy I want to know how you are doing. Big hug and kisses to everyone
Love

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Jenny,

Yes i went back to work 6 days after the operation. I have a desk job so it's not too bad. I did weigh myself at home on Thursday morning after op & I was 95. Today, 4 days later I weigh 91. It could possibly be just fluid or maybe the gas from the op. I don't know what my weight was at home before op. My clothes don't feel any different.

It's not like my focus is losing weight right now, I am trying to get through each day, and the weight loss is the reason I had the op. I am going ok with the fluids, struggle with soup. Having an up & go every morning, soup at lunch & a hot milo before bed. I am also drinking lots of fluids, even powerade which I would never have wasted the calories on before. I am finding I am not too hungry at all. Will probably have to increase the soup as my appetite comes back. Have taken pain relief at night to help me sleep. Nothing worse than a long rough night.

Keep me updated how you are going. Good luck.

The first six weeks after surgery should be focussed on healing not on weight loss. You are going to have the rest of your lives to control your weight so enjoy this healing period while it lasts.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi Sonya,
Good luck with your operation. My advice, especially at night time is pain relief.

I was in hospital for 1 night. I was told the sooner I got out of bed after the op the better. So when I was taken back to my room I was up & at them. Brushed my teeth, went to the toilet ect. Hurt like hell but I wanted out. I was discharged 8.30am the next morning. I went to work today & felt really good. Occassional discomfort but nothing too bad. And its only been 6 days since operation. The pain certainly feels short lived. Still don't want to cough or sneeze but other than that all is good.

I weighed myself at home on Thursday (day after I discharged from hospital). I weighed 95kg. Today 91kg. Sooo happy. The best feeling for me is when my partner & girls have take away, or bad food, I have no choice but to say no. I feel bad in that moment but after they have eaten I feel so great that I didn't eat it. I do love my take away but love my weight loss far more.

Keep me posted how you are going.

My email address is cmandjc@bigpond.net.au for any bandster that would love to chat.

My goal is to be 65 kilos by Christmas. I can't ever imagine weighing that, not even in high school. I would still be happy with 70-75kg. Don't want to be unrealistic.

Hi everyone

Good Luck Sonya! I look forward to talking with you as we are similar in op timing. I certainly hope you dont have to wait around for the surgery in hospital like I did. Though in fairness the doctor did have an emergency.

Well apart from a bit of a tummy ache I am doing ok. Today, I craved meat! I would have given anything to suck on a juicy porterhouse. So I stuck my finger in the vegemite jar and sucked it. This helped with the craving. It is really hard to get sustenance out of soup, juice, custard etc while on the fluid stage. I would really like to chew something even though I know the feeling wouldnt last long.

No way I will jepordise my op! One positive is that all bodily functions are back to normal...YAY!

My op wounds are starting to itch too so that means they are healing.

Also, I have a very sore back from not walking properly. I have to keep remembering to stand up straight.

When will I see some weight loss do you all think? It has now been 4 days since my op.

Love to all

Hi All

Sorry havnt been posting of late but had a terrible bout of flu then had to catch up the with a weeks work, I had missed. Only lost .3kg in the last couple of weeks so have to increase the excercise (didnt do any whilst ill), have my next fill on 29th. Seems like when you have a fill your restricted but then I must get used to it 'cause i seem able to eat (just not large amounts)anything again, maybe have a leak?? Is that possible???.
For those who dont want to tell others about the band, gall bladder removals do limit your intake and you have to be carefull about fatty foods as I was with a friend who recently had her gall bladder out and we pretty much could only eat the same amount and same foods.

Welcome to all the new and hi to the oldies.

Catch up soon

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi All,

Glad to have you back again Gabs, must have been pretty scary for you and your family with your dad. Hope he is doing much better now.

Kylie, I am going to try and pay for my op through my super fund. I saw my surgeon last week and asked for a letter for APRA, he knew exactly what I was talking about. His receptionist printed one off straight away for me that had all of the life threatening words etc in it. Was as easy as that, I thought it would be difficult as it is not really life threatening at the moment. I suppose if left unchecked it would be eventually.

I then took the letter my surgeon gave me to my GP and they read it and then wrote alsmost an identical letter from it. I thought it would be much more difficult to get them than they were. I will be sending my application in tomorrow, don't like my chances of getting my fund to pay up as the lady at the fund told me they wouldn't. I am with the PSS and have been told it is difficult to get it from them. No harm in trying, I will have about 6000.00 to pay after Medicare and my health fund.

It is hard to think that in less than 48 hours I will have my band and have crossed over to the other side. I am excited and a little scared but the thought of being able to wear nice clothes soon makes it all worth it.

I have been on optifast for the last week and have lost nearly 5 kilo's so am happy about that. Good luck tomorrow Sonya, I will be thinking of you.

Take care
Andrea

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi everyone,

Yes Mandy, Dad is doing better now although he will be on blood thinners for at last 6 months. His heart started beating erratically (atrial fibrulation) and they had to shock him back into a sinus rythem.

He is going to be changing his diet (less alchohol, caffeine, butter and salt) and will have to be careful for a while but we are hopefull he will be back to normal in time.

I just had an early dinner over at a friends place after walking up a mountain (which was really nice) and you can imagine what I thought when I was served up steak and sauseges and corn (which I love but which is difficult with my current level of restriction).

I have not told this friend about the operation but thinnk I may have to now as I could only eat a tiny bit of the dinner. And something got stuck and I am still in pain. Thank goodness it was an early dinner and I could use the excuse of letting them get ready for the week in order to leave early.

I feel really bad as her husband cooked and I know he thought I didn't like the food. I did and wanted to eat it all down I was just unable to.

Have to work out a way to handle such situations. It is easy out at a restaurant but at someones house is difficult not to seem rude.

ANyway, hope everyone is well and happy.

Lots of love,

Gabs

Hi all

Gabs, glad to see you back and hope your Dad is better now.

Kylie you are right in what you say and the way we feel ourselves is the most important thing. I also have back trouble and had surgery two years ago, by the time I went into hospital I was in the worst pain I have ever had and was begging the surgeon to "come to my house and do in on the kitchen table with a knife and fork", lol, true story!! Anyone with back problems will appreciate that we don't want it as bad ever again and was a large part of my decision to have the lap band. The lap band op pain is nowhere near the back pain so relax. As far as super goes the surgeon will know what to write on your application and will include the necessary words re life threatening etc, so that is an option.

Hope everyone else is fine and enjoying their weekend.

Take care
Mandy

Gabs, re: the pain. Good to post that. Thanks. After back surgery, I felt like I'd gone to hell and back. It still brings tears to my eyes if I think of it for too long. 13 hours in emergency waiting for the doc's to diagnose and not offering pain medication was a nightmare. So with that memory, I'm hoping this will be considerbly less ; maybe like getting your appendix removed, or tonsils ? (I've had neither, only the wisdoms all at once - looked like a basketball for a week, and felt terrible,,,, giggles). Kylie.

Thanks Mandy. I think my hunch re: public waiting system is the most obvious. And you are right at first appearance a lot of people think the low BMI's can just "diet and exercise and you'll be fine". What they don't get is almost all of us have battled with this condition our whole lives, and as soon as we stop or slow down the heavy regieme it comes back on and with buddies. If I find I am having difficulty this way, I will try the Private system or look into the superannuation. Was reluctant to go that way only b/c with super, I am not "in a life threatening situation". Cheers for the support. I was so annoyed yesterday I just had to get on here to share. Why would any of us go through this procedure half-heartdly. There much I will miss (tequila nights and steak) but how nice to be thin and wear jeans and maybe one day have a baby. Kylie.

Re:low BMI banding 30-35 Reply to this message
Hi agian everyone,

In reading through the posts I have noticed a few people being surprised by the pain of the operation.

To all the unbanded out there let me tell you unequivocably that it will hurt. Not for too long and if you keep up the pain meds it is totally tolerable but it is an operation and it will hurt for a good 10 days.

But it hurts when you stub your toe or sprain your ankle as well. the difference here is that you are getting something for all that pain. And the memory of it fades pretty wuickly (like mandy said).

Also, my doc did not send me to a shrink or a nutritionist and I am fine. I would not have liked to go into group sessions etc. I did not go to an information night nor did I see a nurse until I got to hospital.

Now I did psych at uni and have been to shrinks and nutritionists in the past and from my bulemic days I know the calorie content of just about every food on the planet so that may be why my doc didn't send me to anyone else but I don't think it is essential to do.

Just my thoughts.

I'll keep reading the posts now.

Love to all,

Gabs

Hi everybody,

How are you all. I am fine, exercising pretty regularly now, actually jogging the whole way as opposed to run walking.

Had a bit of health scare with my dad last week and so had a bit of a break from the board.

Welcome, welcome to all the new contributors. I am going through the messages to catch up and will talk more after that.

I’m also reposting the goalpost so that all the newies can add their goals.

Lots of love to everyone.

Hi Kylie
I had a professional try to talk me out of it, I think it is to make sure of your commitment as it does take commitment to be successful with the band. Because it is the public waiting list you could be right that he is looking to put people in order of merit and may just have gone on how you look at first and not how debilitating a back problem can be. Is there no way you can do it with private cover or superannuation so you are sure it will be done?
Good luck, Mandy

Good luck for tomorrow, you will be fine. Pain wise I was under the impression it was nothing and hardly hurt at all so was shocked when it actually did hurt, it's best you know that there are times you will be quite uncomfortable but it's certainly not unbearable and it doesn't last long. Can't wait to hear how you get on.

Take care

Morning Jenny

The stitch pain thing is normal and gets less as the days go by, I still sometimes get it and often have my left arm in the air (the side of my port) as this seems to help. It took around a week until I could sleep on my side, if you sleep on your back put a pillow under your knees it helps. My surgeon said there isn't really a need to break the tablets, a whole one will go down fine, I wasn't brave enough to try is at first but after a couple of weeks I took my tablets whole. I found the tabsule shape tablets just broken in half were easiest.

Glad all seems to be going well. Take care of yourself.

Hi everyone

Ok, is it normal to have a sort of pain under the ribs, like a stitch? And, how long before I will be able to sleep on my side. This sleeping on my back has knobs on it. I also hate taking tablets when they are crushed.

Other than that Im fine and coping with the liquids.

Thanks Mandy and Peta

By the way is it normal to get sort of spasamy pains while sitting down? It goes away when I stand up. Perhaps I am squishing something. I also have a sore back from walking funny.
