Oh, Terra, you poor thing. Have you got painkillers (liquid, or fizzy gone flat)? Are you putting soemthing hot on the shoulder pain, like a hot water bottle or microwaved heat pack? Or lie with the electric blanket on high (if you're in electric blanket country).
Just try and relax and be looked after if possible. My manual says wound pain is 'to be expected' and treat with painkillers, and also that the gas pain is helped by walking. I compare all pain with a tooth abscess (my pain was nothing compared with that), others may compare it with having children!
The anaesthetic may have exhausted you, too. Soon this period will be over and you'll be raring to go! You've made a great, and, strong, decision. Congratulations!

| Day 3 post op and still feeling really really sore. Head not in a good place either. Starting to wonder if I have done the right thing. Shoulder pain still so bad and pain in my stomach terrible. Is it normal to still feel this bad. IF I knew I was going to feel like this not sure I would actually be here. Hoping once the pain goes so will the negative thoughts. |

Terra - it's done! Good on you! I know that feeling before surgery - 'what on earth am I doing here?'. You must be home by now, and perhaps coping with a bit of gas pain, but recovery will be so quick, especially with the excitement of your decision.
Thinking of you

Hello Slaz
Don't you dare worry about what other people think! In my experience, their reasons often have nothing to do with you at all, but can be based on their underlying fear, even resentment. Even my 'fat' friends can sometimes moralise about weight loss, as though gastric banding is the easy way out.
I look back and it seems so simple, but it does require strength of character to make the decision and go through the procedure, not just the operation, which is just the start, but all the monitoring and care required after. That's why the surgeon's team do quite a psychological evaluation of suitability. After 22 months I still have to have eternal vigilance - it's not a quick fix! I've heard of people who have it reversed after a few months because they can't cope with the changes - what a waste!
Two years ago I looked around and saw people my age (mid sixties - so old!) becoming stooped and pear shaped, hardly able to walk, and I didn't want that to happen to me, hence my decision. Now at least I can stand up straight, shoulders back, chest out, and most important of all (I am so superficial) I can wear nice clothes! And, amazingly, I've lost weight in the feet, so all those expensive shoes fit again.
Be thrilled with your decision.
Jess, it seems so soon for your first fill. Good luck with the next stage.

Hey terratime,
Hows everything going with the opti? I am ok get my fill in less then a week. woohoo!!! Sort of started on solids which seems to be going ok. I have also discovered that food courts in shopping centres don't have very small meals, i end up throwing most of my meal away (even tho i pick really small meals).

| Tanya, could the nausea be a hang-over from the anaesthetic - did you have it after surgery? I remember having nausea for days after an operation, and I learned quickly to ask for some anti-nausea medication. |

| Yes, I remember now, Tanya. Did your doctor suggest a food/drink programme for your intolerances? Do make sure you don't dehydrate. |

Tanya, is it still the gas pain? I've been going through the pre-op. manual and it recommends liquid panadol (but nothing fizzy, let it go flat). The gas is used to pump up the cavity for easier access, it will disappear soon. The manual also says walking helps. Are you sipping fluid constantly? And don't forget to drink sustagen (I had the hospital or sports chocolate as a hot drink).
Did you get some information as to what you might expect? Don't hesitate to ring your doctor's office about feeling sick.

I'm uncontrollable with the posts today!
Thinlizzy mentioned people being judgemental - there's an article in Saturday's Sydney morning Herald Spectrum about obesity and gastric banding, and it's very judgemental.
The writer says fat people just lack willpower and self- discipline. How many weight loss programmes have we all been on, and how many times have we heard that criticism?!
I do believe the theory discussed in my pre-op handout that there may be something wrong with the physiology of our hunger mech*nism, and that the suppression of appetite through gastric banding can help us. And it does!

Hello Thinlizzie and Slazdins
Congratulations on the big decisions! And, Thinlizzie, I think you're sensible keeping it to yourself for a while. I certainly did, but after a few months told a couple of dear friends (mainly because they caught me when I had a blockage). And I was nervous it mightn't work, like all the other weight loss programmes I've been on, so I didn't want constant questioning, however well-meaning, about my progress. At my age of 65, once the weight loss starts to show people don't ask questions because they think I might have some dreadful illness!
Good luck on your exciting journey.
Libbi
PS If people do ask and I don't want to go into the detail, I just tell them the truth - I've been eating less, especially at night, which I think really makes a difference. |
