| Hi deeeskis, no I am not hungry but then again I was not hungry on Optifast either.Last night I was a bit iffy but some times I think it is the mind just knowing that you cannot have solids that makes you feel hungry. I made myself some home made pumpkin soup yesterday and it was far better than the tin soup. Now I am in the mind of experimentation. You will be fine on Monday all you have read on this line is what to expect so just go with it I am day four after surgery and get my bandages off today, each day you feel much better. As my doctor said exercise but no rugby HA as if!! |

hi everyone, day 4 of optifast and the headaches have gone away, mind you i've had 3 short blacks today so it might have been caffeine withdrawals. still feeling a bit hungry but not too bad. I've got the pre-anaesthetic clinic tomorrow and then the op on monday.
kerrie, you're a week ahead of me - are you feeling hungry since the op? |

| Thanks Libbi, all your recipes sound great I guess I just need a little imagination or experimentation, my doctor says 2-3 weeks of liquids and then come and see him, I hope it goes fast!! |

Welcome to the other side, Kerrie!
Your week of 'through the straw' liquids should go quickly, then the mushies. Don't forget the heavenly cold avocado soup - (I know I'm repeating myself and most probably boring everyone to death) blended avocado with chicken stock, light cream or yoghurt, garlic and onion if you wish. It's respectable enough to serve to friends, and I might do it for Christmas Day.
As Stormin says, you can make 'normal' casserole food for family and then have the slushy bits for yourself. Also, cook chicken or seafood curries, with lots of veges like carrot and capsicum, then blend your serve with extra yoghurt or light coconut milk. Do the same with chicken or seafood pasta dishes (the shop sauce mixes are handy). The flavour is delicious (to me, anyhow)!
Dare I say forget about boring shakes - you're meant to be eating (or drinking) real food, anyhow. Make smoothies with fresh or frozen berries and mango, and banana, plus yoghurt.
Good luck!

kerrie,
There is a sticky thread called "The Liquid Stage", start at the beginning of this thread and you will find plenty of suggestions.
Remember your vitamins too, and to drink water. I don't like soup at all so my liquid stage was not a good one, but hey, it paid off in the end!
MAek the family a nice rich stew, scoup the gravy off and possible thin it a little. It will be full of protein and will possibly keep you feeling fuller for longer. Homemade soups will give you a more full feeling than tinned stuff thats for sure. If you want to cheat, M u f fin Break has a very very nice pumpkin soup and it is really rich and hearty and filling. Get a take away cup of it and it will keep for a couple of days. |

Cas, thank you for that extra feedback. It's good to know that you have maintained after 6 months at such a great weight loss. It's so easy for the weight to creep up (or has been in the past) and so discouraging when it does, even by a couple of kgs. I find that the mind can play funny tricks - because I've bought new clothes that are quite tight-fitting I suddenly feel I'm fat all over again, even if they are two sizes smaller! Are you still on a perprtual diet - no chocolate biscuits?
Dee, good luck for your Optifast and op. It's good that you can fast forward, less time to think about it! It's a bit unnerving when the doctor says go away and think about it (as mine did, and yours I suppose) - I imagine they get a few people who end up cancelling, and of course with doctors' ethics (hopefully) they don't want to persuade us, although sometimes I wish they would!
Let us know how you go.

Hi Lee, My weight loss has been slow but steady. It takes about 3 fills for the restriction to really be felt and the fills are each one month apart so it does take some time to settle into the whole thing. You still need to exercise and watch what you eat. My biggest hurdle is that with only one fill at the moment, I can still eat chocolate and biscuits which were my issues before surgery. I do find that having eaten that junk I really can't eat anything else so I am losing weight just not very healthily. It is really important to be realistic about the band. It really is not magic and you still need to work with it. My weight loss has been slower than I expected but that it entirely my fault - I don't do the right things YET. It does stop you feeling hungry and if you go with that and not eat anyway you will do really well. I am slowly coming to terms with that fact and getting back on track myself.

Hi Libbie.
My height is 165cm. I proably stopped loosing weight 6 months ago and b4 my operation i was still loosing maybe .05 kg without even trying.
Its great when people i know walk straight past me especially school friends.
I have also kept photos and i always keep them with me in the hope of inspiring someone else to be banded.
My BMI was 37 and now around 24 .
I actually never thought i would get to 24 but i did. and dont regret any minute of it.

hi everyone
this is my first post so popping my cherry!!
i've lurked on this, and other banding sites for a while now, had lot's of info and support from you all - although you didn't know> I saw my surgeon a couple of months ago and he wanted a month's thing time on both sides, i'm low bmi 31, but have other health issues, (i'm also posting this on the Novemver 09 bandit's thread)
anyway after the month i still wanted to do this and he said fine, i wanted to have it done before christmas, had all the screening tests, barium meal, support appointments etc. then got a call yesterday to say i could go on the 30th november list if i wanted........
do i want? - YES, so it's a "quick flight to the front line"! started low carb today, hopefully that will take the edge off my appetite, then optifast on Monday - done that before a few times - and not looking forward to it.
but it's the yoyo-ing that i'm hoping to stop.
Monday week here i come :-}

Hello, Lee, I'm sticking my nose in here!
If you read back to page 127, date 13/09/09, you'll see my history of weight loss. I'm one of the slower losers (ageing metabolism?), others do much better, but I think you're being VERY optimistic with your expectations, considering your low bmi. Two kgs per month is the average, but you'll get a good start with Optifast (which is bearable with the muesli bars).
Read this site from the very beginning and you'll get a good idea of how people lose. Don't be disappointed if it's only (only!)12-16 kgs by April - it will really show. Good luck!

Ezywoo
I have been banded for over a year, i dont eat steak just because im not very big on meat but i have and just need to be careful and chew chew chew.
I can also eat white bread.
Somedays I can eat checken breast and others I cannot.
I think the main thing is to take your time and again chew chew chew.
All bandits are different in what they can and cannot eat.
Hope this has helped. |

Hi ezy-woo
As I understand it as long as the steak is tender and all is cut up small and chewed well there should be no problem!! But like some feed back from those who have been banded for a while. The only thing I have been told is no white bread, everything else you can eat but in small quantities. |

Amber, have you thought of taking out private cover and waiting the year (if it's still a year)? The time will go so quickly, and don't you have to wait quite a long time as a public patient anyhow? Some people access their super, too, but may be yours hasn't yet built up enough.
The specialists' information sessions are very on the ball with the money side of things (they have no shame...).
With private cover I was still out of pocket $5000.

Cas, what an achievement! You must be unrecognisable, and what's a couple of kilos when you have done so well. May I ask your height and before and after bmi? Your weight loss will be so encouraging to others reading this site. When did you stop losing weight - the doctors always say we can only lose about 60% of our best weight loss, but I'm happy for anything after the lifelong struggle.

Hi Libbi.
Well its been up and down. I have lost 37 kg weighing in at 98kg when banded. It took a while to loose the weight but go figure how long did it take to get there. I have a 10 cm band and until 3 weeks ago i had 4.2 ml. I had to have an operation and they wanted all the fill out.
My dr took out 1.8 which left me with 2.5. I am uaually an active person and because i was not active and i could eat more i put on 2kg in 3 weeks. The irony to it was that i was hoping to eat everything that i have not been able to have over the last 3 three and i didnt even feel like it when i could. I blame the 2kg on chocolate and i love home made ice cream.
I have now had .5ml put in Friday. My dr puts it is small doses.
My son tells me i took the easy way out but from the sounds of it i also lack will power and i must admit it is the best thing i have ever done.

Cas, tell us more! We all know keeping it off is the hardest part. How have you been doing, and do you still have fills?
My surgery was two years ago and I reached a wonderful 23 plus kgs off after 18 months(a blockage helped); now it's around 20-21 kgs (the weight I reached after one year). I felt so thin at 23 kgs off, despite the everpresent blubber, and so fat at this weight! It's amazing the difference in 3 kgs. I'm really struggling to lose it, and am still topping up the fills, very carefully. I know willpower comes into it, but I'm sick of willpower - I want the easy way!
Amanda, how are you going at maintaining?

| Kerrie, I have found that Opti is by far the hardest stage. Once you get past that then liquids and mushies, life get easier. I have gone back to normal food (except for bread) just in much much smaller amouunts. I feel like I live very noraml just feel like I never overeat anymore and feel much much better about myself. |
