| Hi Libbi, I've lost 7kg on opti for 2 weeks. Going in for operation on Friday, but as Thursday is my wedding anniversary, I'm going out to a restaurant for dinner and am going to have whatever takes my fancy :))) |

Scrambled eggs are in the 'mushy' stage, Ronnie, which you're close to, they'll slide down so easily.
Ridgebak, welcome, and good work! How much weight have you lost on Opti? Sounds a lot! Good luck for your operation.

Just the shoulder pain from the gas, Ronnie, and a feeling of exhaustion which I think can be the effects of the anaesthetic. I was just so excited to have undergone the operation, I was on a bit of a high, and I like the attention of being in hospital (I'm a bit twisted that way, just as well I've never been ill in hospital!). If I did have a bit of other pain it's left my mind pretty quickly. The keyhole wounds were painless.
You do need to allow yourself to rest, no matter how you feel.
Have a great recovery.

To be honest Libbi I was given a one page document, which says fluid diet for 2 weeks - I don't think so! I see my surgeon on Thursday. Did you have any pain after surgery??

Only a week for me, Ronnie. You can have pureed fruits now if you can suck them through a straw (that's the test). I could live my whole life on soups as long as they have lots of spices (eg pumpkin with cumin and coriander), and for the mushies I just blended what others were having, such as curried fish or chicken, or chicken with pasta sauce, to make a thick and tasty soup (or perhaps I was just desperate when I say 'tasty').
What did your doctor say about time on each stage? My information was in a 50 page handbook!!

How long did everyone stay on there liquid diets?? I know it is only day 4, but really ...... I am over it, having said that I am not hungry either. It must be a case of because you can't have it - you want it. I am still on the shakes 1 shake lasts me all day, water, juice, a little soup for variety. I am hanging to go onto pureed fruit, youghurt ect - maybe i am just impatient. I still have a little pain on my left side. I to had a liposuction (1998) and an abdomonoplasty (2001). Hopefully this time i can lose the weight and tone at the same time so I don't have to have another abdomnoplasty. Maybe my expectations of the surgery were a little high - I thought that I would be back on the treadmill today - NO CHANCE or even walk the kids to school - NO CHANCE. So this week I will take it easy and hopefully next week I cna begin exercising

Ronnie, welcome to the other side! Let us know how you go with the liquids and what you are having.
Anna, what a history - you have certainly earned your banding. The indecision you went through the first time must have been very upsetting. I can really sympathise (as can we all) with the revolving door of losing and gaining: I had two abdominoplasties over the years (!), and wouldn't mind another what with the ageing flesh being difficult to tone (sorry, gang, to be so graphic).
Yes, for those about to make their first appointment, the doctor wants to know that you've really battled weight loss and gain before choosing this option.

Hi all
A short note to let you know that my surgery went well (was done on Friday). I woke up with hideous shoulder tip pain (thanks to this blog I would not have know what it was - thank you ladies)I am a little sore, It feels like I have a stitch/cramp on the right Hand side and also feels like I have done a Trillion sit ups .....not likely! At this stage I am sip sip sipping, and I cannot believe that I am not even hungry - early days yet I suppose.
Thank you all for your support, this journey would have been extremely difficult it it wasn't for this forum.
I will keep you all posted

| Hi Kristy, With the surgeon I saw it was not about the low BMI, its about your history with dieting & health issue that are linked to the struggle of that revolving door. For some of us out there we know how to diet however we can't sustain the weight loss once the diet is over. The gain is always rapid and with a vengeance. That is the beauty of the band for the low BMI-you know how to diet, just need that extra help to get over that mountain & maintain it. I didn't have to convince my surgeon I've been doing this since I was 18 now 48. he had seen me in 2007 when I was 97kg & saw my extensive past history of abusive dieting which included at different stages liposuction twice and also abdominoplasy at 110kg. In Nov 2007-2 weeks b4 op I cancelled & went on another diet for 10 months in 2008 second time around on optifast. 2009 eating more than exercising weight pouring on again so he said "Are you finished with your dieting" I said "yes". His words were "Lets do this" . No regrets. Its about your history, tell him/her what you go thru, what lengths you have been thru to lose weight. Your own doctor will write on the referral the different methods used by him. Any health issues you may have. But at the end of the day only you can sell you. My surgeon is wonderful. I live in melbourne will be happy to email you surgeon name. Anna |

So much good information, for before and after the op., Cath and Anna.
I think quite a few of us are going on-line for the first time, nervously, but the feed-back is such a help to us all, so thank you everyone.

Welcome, Kristy. Yes, we were all worried that we'd be rejected, but as you've read there are some very low bmi-ers out there who have been accepted with not even a battle(I was 33 plus).
Tell us where you live so people can respond with their doctor's details.
Minnie - 2.5 kg is good! You are so brave putting up with an overfill for so long. It can make you feel quite unwell. I lasted 24 hours - couldn't even drink water! Keep us posted.

Low BMI banding and if fact all banding is related to co-morbidities. That means your weight is a health risk because of blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory problems, mobility dysfunction (problems with your hips and knees). The doctor will be looking for a reason help you so have a think about your own health or family health issues that would be improved if you lost weight. Motivation is important because the band is a big commitment.
Be prepared to talk about the diets you have tried and demonstrate you are willing to make the changes required and he will help you. Surgeons don't like having failures using their name. If you take the attitude "a girls gotta eat" and keep feeding yourself the same quantities in liquid form nothing will change.
The band is a tool not a solution and if you demonstrate that you are willing to make the changes it should happen for you. Good luck. |

Hi Aneke, I got banded in Sept BMI 31 Finally allowed to join up. Hubby nervous about chatrooms, he been following the chat lines so here i am. yay, been very lucky so far nil mishaps, following eating/chewing/drinking plan and have an 8ml band. Have had 2 fills to date 1ml & 1.5ml fill the other day. Gone from 90kg (pre optifast, then band) to 79 kgs in 10 weeks so happy. The only problem I had post op was I woke up and was nauseaous and dry retching- couldn't hold fluid down. Antiemetic didn't help much. it was a struggle the 1st 2 days then I picked up and there's been smooth sailing since. Never had post op nausea before - when you talk to the anesthetist pre-op may help to pre-empty this complication. Its really awful at the time. What is really wonderful post band ? Not planning your day around food. I am still learning the limitation of my body & not letting to much time lapse between meals. I try for 3 small, most times only 2 get eaten (shift worker) but always meat/fish with vegs/pasta/rice. I work on the principal if I'm going to eat it may as well be something worth while that will nourish the body ( it is such a small amount we eat) also carry weight watchers food bars in bag for emergency never had to use yet. Also surround yourself with supportive people esp family post banding sometimes so called friends and colleagues can be cruel and hurtful. Thanks to everyone on line your posts have been tremendous to read, really helpful & will continue to guided me thru my banding journey
Cheers Anna |

Hi Everyone, I also have been going up and down with a net loss of 2.2 kg over the last 4 weeks.
I was feeling pretty miserable though. Food got stuck on a daily basis for no apparent reason other than stress - and the spare ziplock bag in my handbag became my friend. I felt sometimes sick, sometimes hungry, never satisfied and scared of the next meal. The 'wrong' food presented no problem, so I ate ice cream and anything creamy I could get my hands on. Finally it dawned on me that my band might be too tight.
I had 0.2ml taken out today and it makes all the difference. I am not hungry at all, had a salad for lunch and some meat and vegies for dinner, finished off with some blueberries and it all stayed down. For the first time in a month I feel good! Just sharing this in case it happens to anybody else.

Congratulations - great news! And being summer, you'll be able to have delicious cold avocado soup with your liquid diet: blend avocados with some onion and garlic (if you like), lemon juice, chicken stock, yoghurt or light cream - just heavenly!
