Re:iamdoingit4me , welcome to my page Reply to this message
jonty ,

I did 3 a day ,(((I saw it as my last diet ever )))lol
I had 2 frozen shakes ,1 morning

and 1 opti bar (lunch)
and 1 frozen shake at night (as a icecream ,dessert)

plus 2 cups vegetables ,(I made 1 cup as carrot/sticks and celery to munch on

and the rest as stirfried /or steamed veg with herbs spices etc

remember to avoid carbs
and
drink plenty of water (2litres a day to flush it all out you will go to toilet heaps )lol

:remember your vitamins also

take panadol if you get headaches
after a day or so they go and you feel good and not hungry at all ,goodluck keep me updated ,by your op ,you will drop heaps of kg
best of all they will not be back ever yay ,talk soon ,Doreen

where are you (city) that so excellent that the dietitian does that ,it it a free/or subsidised service ,Doreen

with opti I made it, froze it and ate it like a thickshake ,choclate was nice ,I often added orange or peppermint essences to it

I loved strawberry opti ,I still have it sometimes ,after a fill or when tight of a morning etc

Re:iamdoingit4me , welcome to my page Reply to this message
corrin ,
hope the fill ,kickstarts you again (remember my post )below
I too gained and plateaued ,it is normal ,
do not stress you will start to loose with correct fills etc keep in touch :)Doreen

(reposted)

weightloss /exercise /hanging skin/

we loose heaps on optifast ,then on liquids it kinda slows ,then we eat mushies ,
often, after not eating we add , any yummy stuff ,(do not overdo it)

but also do not starve from a few treats ,as you will then crave them,
I also added a bit of weight at that stage and to be honest was devastated

(but it made me realise I had to help the band(tool) work also,
then as I got first 2 fills ,I really hardly lost for about 6 week

I even hardly posted on here as I felt
everyone banded at same time was looseing heaps and I was not,
I also thought ,another diet gone wrong what a waste of money,
I spoke to my dietitian etc
and realized ,I may not have lost weight ,but inch wise lost heaps ,lol
I guess I was at a plataeu weight wise
but ,it made me realise ,this was not going to be an easy way to loose and I had to get off my butt,
exercise a bit and walk a bit,

after the huge quick loss on opti

we have to realise that the weight does not continue dropping at about a kg every other day ,sadly, lol,

we did not put it on overnight either,a regular smaller loss is better for our skin than huge losses,

you may/should only loose slowly, but even 500g loss a week is huge 26kg ,a yr nothing to be sneezed at,

I would hate to carry that in potatoes (I see 500 g as a tub of margarine and 5kg as a bag of potatoes),both fattening lol, ,
,but when you think about it if we lost too quick, our skin would really hang ,mine is going back well ,so much better than I ever expected,

Doreen, You seem to have a full time job answering all the queries you receive..many thanks, you are a god send, Re the Optifast, do I use it for one, two or three meals per day, sound like it may be yucky reading some of these threads, hope I can manage to do it, If I start tomorrow that will be 9 days pre op..Also found out to-day that the local Community Health Dietitian is seeing Banded clients..Thanks again for your support, I need all I can get Cheers Jonty

A paper should take you on...

Dear Doreen...I have a problem.

Thanks so much for my advise. I will take it all on board.

I think I will even get a cup to take with me too. I think I will have one with a lid though...so I can put it back in my bag. Not that I want to save it. lol

It's just in case I have to wait to ditch it.

Thanks again for your time

jonty ,
dietitians if good, are a godsend ,but some are a waste of money ,your gp can write a referal for 5 free/or highly subsidised visits
finding a good dietitian and one that accept these plans can be hard ,

main things are

always take daily vitamins

always eat lean proteins first ,
top up on vegs

limit carbs
limit sugary
or fatty foods ,just common sence ,

my first dietitian was as hopless as my phycologist who also got the boot after he oked my surgery ,lol,

trudy williams was my second dietitian ,she was excellent

I bought her books and often refer back to them her site is below
http://www.foodtalk.com.au/

hope this assists you ,keep safe ,Doreen

jonnty ,
If it was me
I would ,it not only makes the surgeons work safer /easier but
kickstarts weight loss
and gets you into ketosis ,so that when you are on the liquid diet ,you do not get hungry ,
well worth it for me started at 110kg
it took 6kg off before surgery ,Doreen

Re:iamdoingit4me , welcome to my page Reply to this message
sharon ,
stressing it would happen ,made it worse, lol

relaxing and not stressing has really helped with my first bite problems
as has going out later in the day (rather than lunch time) ,
if out at lunch I usually have soups or nachos and mince with heaps sauce

my band seems looser at night ,lol,

I found having a drink (wine )or other ,first ,seems to get me more relaxed also and making sure that the drink ,was down first ,helped

then the food all gets cut fine
eg(both ways through a fork ,abit like mince lol, till you get used to chewing well enough helps ,
and ask for extra sauce ,gravy

(((I now chew better )))

((it must be like a smooth peanut butter )consistancy before swallowing ,

tips ;;
be aware of where a toilet is ,
and I also carry a small bottle of diet coke so if something gets stuck
I go get it out immeadiately , so it does not bank up other food and cause a problem ,
I try to carry a mcdonalds type cup if I need to pb,discreatly , but have not needed it for ages

I have only had 1 incident in about 3 months ,
with nachoes and not enough sauce ,lol,

I was worried last time I got a drop of fill in,but it has tightened me,just enough to be aware it is there ,I used to find with over 3.25mls

I had constant problem's but I must chew better now
I can now eat steak ,meats roasts
( even had ,cold roast turkey on w/end ,next day )
so long as ,well chewed
a baked dinner is fine with gravy
I enjoy a good varied diet ,

my favourites for going out are still prawn dishes and chinese
((always protein first ))and I avoid the rices ,

been loving mangoes at present ,something I was afraid of after banding lol,
even had a sandwich a while ago but have no interest in bread so have not bothered again

I now eat almost ,all foods ,no problems ,

my band is 10ml small but I have only about 3.25/3.5 mls in ,not sure ,but it is enough to slow me down ,
hope this helps ,take care ,Doreen

Hey Doreen,

Thanks for your reply...I went to your profile but couldn't see it. Thats ok though as I don't know much about email and I am quite comfortable here.

My details I am 52..was banded at the 5th of August.
I was low BMI for a band...30.

but have diabetes, high blood pressure. high tryglicarides, colestoral and sleep apneoa.
I started at 89 and now 86kl

I was thinking that you knew about the first bite syndrome or suffered from it yourself.

Do you still? Does it have any rhyme or reason to it?
It seems to happen to me mainly if I am out dinning.

Cheers
Sharon

Hi Doreen,

Your very inspirational...wow!!! Thats great... down to a size 8. Congratulations. You must feel fantastic and very proud of yourself ..deservedly so.

I feel like it is never going to happen...for me.

I was banded at the begining of August and have only lost 2kilo's. Plus my diabeties and high blood pressure are STILL an issue. And my sleep apnea is still causing me sleepless nights with the mask on or off....Woe is me..hehe Can you lose weight when you don't deserve it? Like when you don't do the opti preband. Still have cravings and still eat kitkats and biscuits?

I thought the band would make me stop...that the band was for those of us who lacked will power. I can still eat every thing and anything...maybe I have cut down a tad...six tim tams instead of the whole packet in one sitting.

The only time that I lost was when the food got stuck when I had my first bite...a few times which made me unable to eat.

Thats what brings me to you...sorrry...hehe

But I was reading the first bite sydrome...and thinking that sounded like me. When I noticed your post...

And thought I would see how you were getting on. Obviously your getting on fine...wow...

Once again Congratulations

You deserve it..
Sharon

I think you have to set them up again. There seemed to be something on the top left side of the new page, but I didn't look into it.

Typical, just get something right, then they go and change it.

Re:iamdoingit4me , welcome to my page Reply to this message
smee ,

I can understand what you are saying
and every kg is great ,and success

I just like to try to encourage every one
and try to give positive influence to a hard journey

(weight loss)is dam hard

I believe ,anyone that says different is lying
as even now (for me )exercise is essential for success
but before
exercise , was near impossible with my back(disc problems ) and leg injuries (from a fall)
and I just could not walk far

I truly believe being so positive has helped my journey so much

weight loss, is so hard without help ,(encouragement )

(not many drs give us a support network it is up to us to find it
so talking to others here assisted /encouraged me

we have all tried so many diets before having surgery ,
to help us looseweight

but fill ,
diet
exercise are all up to the individual ,
if we cheat (we cheat ourselves )
or get off track ,we suffer ,

but

never before my band
has diet

ever got me back on track
this band has
it trully has changed my life and with that change my whole life style has changed ,

I just tell my story to encourage and say it is doable
but like you say (no 2 journeys are alike ) ,

I really believe.
my positive thinking
has been a major influence in my success ,

so I guess, in saying to someone
"you will do it too ",

I should add
if you work with the band
have correct fill
eat correctly
and stick to the rules ,
I also believe if my band was not working as expected ,
that the drs should review the situation and work with me for a positive outcome ,most surgeons do ,

I fully believe ,without this band ,
and positive thinking etc
by now I would be much heavier and even more unhealthy than before
have a great day ,Doreen

height 157cm
start 110kg , size 22/24 :((BMI 44.63)
banded (1/10/07) at 104 kg
now 66.5 kg :)size ,mostly all 10's now :)(BMI 27)

now size 8 jeans:)

Re:iamdoingit4me , welcome to my page Reply to this message
Hi Doreen

It's terrific to be really positive about this journey and your success is inspiring but everyone's journey and results are different. Yes, if you follow the rules you will enjoy some success with the band but it's really hard to predict what that will be. The figures the surgeons throw around are 60-70% of your excess weight. These are the statistics. Yes some lose all their excess weight, others don't get near there. You have enjoyed great success but others may not - it's great to offer support but I worry about making 'promises'. The reality is some find a perfect level of restriction with their band, others unfortunately never find that sweet spot. For some reflux kicks in before they get where they would ideally like to be which is the case with my second band. Some fight a sluggish metabolism and the weight doesn't drop away like others experience. So yes most will enjoy some weight loss with a band - but to varying degrees - maybe not the size 12, but a 16 and that's great too.
